Oh, my!

Good morning, all!
-
I'm very sleepy after a restless night. The cats were fine. I had a hard time getting to sleep, and then I was up too many times. I'll blame the pasta dinner; I think it contained too much salt.
-
Today Doug Fulington and I will work some more on the Kay Swift ballet. I think we'll finish it tomorrow.
-
Last night I watched on Netflix the first two episodes of The House of Guinness, based - I think - on this book. I'm not sure if I will finish all 7 or 8 parts; it's nicely photographed, the design for 1868 is quite good, the cast of Irish and British actors is excellent, but the storytelling in episode ome was sloppy in introducing the characters, and the musical score is dreadful. When there's live music on film, we get 19th cetury music, but for dramatic scenes and montages, we get pounding rock songs and other noise from 2024 that take the viewer completely out of 1868.
-
Congratulations, BK, on your marvelous new posting Millstone!

Good morning, all.

CONGRATULATIONS to BK on your lofty new perch in the HHW firmament!!!
And more congratulations!

We had a low overnight of 37 degrees.
Mine was 71.
-
BK, I am looking at the track listing for the Manze pastoral album (2025), but I don't see anything by John Rutter listed. Weird.
-
DR John G., did they give you an idea of the timeline for hiring decisions?
-
An interesting, and ultimately sad, summary of Franklin Schaffner's career.
The great films of his are really great, no question about it, and I'm glad the world has those.
-
And, more crucially, does the job offer the option for health insurance?
-
I think our overnight low was mid-to-high 50s, and too muggy, which it's been again for several days.
Big change today, though. We've got a couple of hours of solid but nice rain, and the highs today will be in the upper 60s. We absolutely needed the rain. (Sorry, DR Laura.)
But wait, there's more! Tomorrow's high will be just around 60. It will definitely feel like fall. I'm just hopeful that the South will keep their damned air down there where it belongs, and that the mugginess will indeed be alleviated.
-
Good morning.
-
Nets pounded. Chugged.

The schools are booking musicians early this year. A month ago I picked up my first spring show, Sister Act, and yesterday, Chicago (Teen Edition) landed in my inbox.
I've never played the former, so becoming familiar with that one will be a good thing. The latter, however... Oy! It will be my fourth time in four years playing that damned teen edition. Every time I do it, I think less of that version and less of the schools and audiences who embrace it. The sanitizing of the material, from the huge cuts in script and score to the incredibly lame substitutions for language and situations, make it a chore to sit through while biting my tongue. It must be a sure-fire seller, is all I can think. But I just don't get it.
Will I have fun playing it, though? Absolutely. Great music that's a challenge. Every time I do it it's like re-learning it, getting my fingers back into shape for it and working the tough passages daily. I've played both piano books and I'll be back on Piano 1 this time around. That's good because it has more to play, AND doesn't have the accordion part which many of us have to play on synth. I'm hopeful we'll get one of the people around here who plays the real thing. The scary thing is that the piano books in the full version of the show, while much the same as these, given what's included, have so much more challenging music - and I've never played that one.
-
We had more people last night than last month. But only about 24.
-
That's down from the usual 60 or so we used to get.
-
A lot of stuff went into the freezer for Sunday.

Congrats to MR BK on his lofty new millstone.

It is sunny and 49 degrees here now.
The high today will only be 71 degrees.
And that's fine.
-
I had to pay my car insurance today.
Both of my cars are now on ONE policy - so it was a bit more expensive than I am used to paying.

Post deleted.

DR Singdaw, good news your A/C has been turned back on.
-
Bruce, how low is low for your prednisone? Do you have the option to take it in the morning?
-
DR George, I am glad your rehearsal went fairly well.
-
Bruce, congrats on reaching 160,000!

Within the next few weeks.

ChasSmith, I love the disco-flavored Sister Act score. Some problematic lyrics, but the music works. I hope it’s fun to play.
-
Hello, all. This is production week for Samson et Dalila. One more dress rehearsal tonight, then we open on Friday for two weekends.
-
What a treat it has been to get to know this opera. The music is so gorgeous, and we have a nice big chorus part - onstage for pretty much all of Acts 1 and 3.
-
The dancers for the two ballets are fabulous, with wonderful choreography.

I'm up, I'm up - have been up since seven - five hours of sleep and non-stop dealing with a whole boatload of people not communicating, and a ton of merde regarding my friend's book. Endless.
-
But what really drives me batty is people not responding to emails or phone calls. There is NO excuse for it and I've had it and yes, Doug Haverty is the WORST - UNLESS he needs to talk or needs something. I just left him a really nasty message and a well deserved one.
-
Prednisone is 20 mgs. It's considered a "moderate" dose.
-
Or so sayeth Google.
-
Listening to Taylor Swift's song "Wood" which is apparently specifically about Travis Kelce's "manhood."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6m50keINEOI
My first thought when hearing the title went to the song called "Wood" from when we saw Elmore's work in "The New Yorkers" at Encores.
But hearing the Taylor Swift song, just on the explicitness level (not quality of the songs) - I wonder if it's really any more explicit than songs like "Kitchen Man" or "You've Got the Right Key, But the Wrong Keyhole." Or "fin and haddie" in "My Heart Belongs to Daddy".
-
I wasn't going to eat a meal, but now I am and I don't care who knows it.

Prednisone is 20 mgs. It's considered a "moderate" dose.
True, but high enough that you might want to take it earlier in the day. It also is high enough to compromise your immune system.

My dad loved Guinness stout.
Just had to share. :)
And his son?
On our trip to Ireland we saw a Guinness quality control truck parked outside a pub and I thought that had to be one of the coolest jobs in the world. Probably not in real life, but it sounds that way from the outside.

I enjoyed being in SISTER ACT very much. :D
I played the Father at the convent. Toward the end two gay guys write a donation check to the convent and in the memo line they put "Oh, Mary!"
And the Mother Superior asks "How did they know my name was Mary?" ???
I took a pause there and finally the director asked me why....and I said that's a joke it's funny. And she couldn't understand. And of course every night we got a big laugh - although some of that may have been the perfect Jack Benny take I gave to the audience at the same moment.....
When in doubt throw in a Benny. ;)
-
;D
-
It is a bit sad that the director did not understanding the joke.

ASK BK:
Can you please remind us of your friend, the author's name so we can look for the book in the Kindle store?
-
So much for getting me an urgent MRA. I will be on the lookout for a more organized rheumatologist office, one that does things correctly in a propper time frame. I can't switch until I get all the tests done and started on a treatment plan.

I'll link to her book as soon as it's live.

Meanwhile, I finally heard from the guy who's top brass at the publisher - he assures me he will take care of this in the morning - he's been very helpful before when this crap has happened.

Shortly, I shall be on my way to the mail place and then to auditions.

The gallette was just about perfect, IMO.
-
Starting The Doorway to Hell, an early gangster film starring Lew Ayers. Jimmy Cagney has fifth billing.
-
This movie is surprisingly good, given how early it was made (1930). A scene of mob warfare was brutal with tommy guns going off and a car exploding amid dozens of fighting guys. You will never get CGI to look so good.
-
I like movies from 1930.

Pre-Hayes Code.

I need to get to bed.

I’d gladly audition Tuesday for a hamburger today.

Orgy — oh, and opera opening — vibes for MichaelG!
Is the debut of an orgy opera an appropriate time to use the old Noel Coward line to Gertrude Lawrence, "Wishing you a warm hand on your opening"?
Or, a line from Laughing Stock, a play that I was in, "Kisses on your opening!"
