Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of a perfect movie, and now it is time for you to post until the perfect cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: BENIGNANT!

The New York Times review of THE QUEEN OF VERSAILLES is a Critic's Pick.
https://www.nytimes.com/2025/11/09/theater/queen-of-versailles-broadway-chenoweth.html
"CRITIC’S PICK
In ‘The Queen of Versailles,’ Kristin Chenoweth Can’t Get Enough
Material excess can never be too excessive for the central character of this gilded Broadway musical, based on the 2012 film."
-
Good morning, all!
-
When I woke this morning, I thought the room looked brighter than when the alarm usually rings. Sure enough, it was 6:30.
-
So, I checked the alarm; it was set for 5:30. I checked the alarm volume; it was set at 0 - no sound, nada, zilch - and this is the second time this has occurred. I keep it at a 7 out of 10 sound notches, so there's either a battery issue or my phone is dying.
-
Well, we're up, my joints are all feeling so much better, Ive hjad so,e coffee, and the cats all ate, so thimgs so far aren't going badly. I have a Zoom meetimg about the new ballet at 11:00, so all my energy till then will be getting the apartment decent enough for the Zoom camera.
-
Today is my brother Macbeth's 77th birthday. I will celebrate by ignoring it.
-
DR Rodzinski, I have the mp3 files of the 2004 Pittsnurgh recording of James Joyce's The Dead. If you'd like that, let me know. Criterion is releasing a new DVD of John Huston's wonderful film version.
-
One of these moments I'll fall back asleep. As to the NY Times, that woman is the worst critic that's EVER been there - she's temporary while they find a lead critic. Read the OTHER reviews because 90% of them are TERRIBLE.
-
BK, what do you mean by temporary? I don't think she's considered chief theater critic, since Elisabeth Vincentelli seems to do as many of the major openings.
-
Good morning.
-
I mean she's temporary while they find a lead critic. And she's terrible. Adam Feldman told me this.
-
Notes subjugated. Evinced.

Thank you, I have heard this, but what I’d really like is the original Broadway cast. Emily Skinner, Blair Brown, Christopher Walken, Marni Nixon, etc. I have nostalgia for their performances.
-
We have no heat, so kids slept with us. Luckily not freezing yet, but gotta get someone to come fix it.
-
Snow on the roof and car tops and trees.....but none on the streets and sidewalks.
Tomorrow temps will be up to 41 degrees.
Low 30's and mid 20's today.
-
I played Mortimer in The Fantasticks.
Every night when I started my speech about dying onstage, El Gallo walked between me and the audience.
After he did it a third time I called him on it and he said: "I was just trying to get out of your way."
I said: "Don't do it again." He didn't, but had he done so he would found out that I also could change my blocking during some of his blowhard drivel.
-
Thanks to everyone who mentioned cast albums. I have made a list and shall investigate them.
-
Director....movies.
Robert Wise and The Sound of Music and West Side Story.
Alfred Hitchcock with Psycho and Strangers On A Train.
-
Good morning, all.
-
I slept for almost 10 hours. I guess I needed it.
-
Most of the reviews I read for Versailles were poor to middling
https://playbill.com/article/read-the-reviews-for-the-queen-of-versailles-on-broadwa
But the posts on Facebook have been vicious. If audiences don’t like the show, it’s doubtful the NYT will help for long. It sounds like it needs the Nine or Wish You Were Here treatment. Keep working.

What is the Nine or Wish You Were Here treatment?
Both were heavily rewritten and retooled after opening.

I think the work done on Nine was what led it to beat Dreamgirls for the Tony that year.

From DR John:
Went to the memorial service of my friend today. Folks tried to be joyous, but that actually worked against it. Still, it was a nice sendoff.
:( Sending hugs.

From DR George:
So, I just noticed that TODAY, November 9th, was the 24th anniversary of our very own HHW! :D

Just curious, shouldn't the director have called him out on it?

WHOA!! Our kind of people!

DR JANE with that particular director - once the show opened, we were on our own.
-
DR Elmore -- that NC school is the one that did the Oklahoma! recreation, is it not?
-
Last night before watching WHERE EAGLES DARE, I stopped by the STARZ Encore channel.....and there it was a 2024 version of BONJOUR TRISTESSE.
I was intrigued and began to watch it.
Chloe Sevigny in the Deborah Kerr role and Claes Bang in the David Niven role were the only two who got with the program. The daughter, her boyfriend, and the husband's young mistress were just NOT WITH THE PROGRAM.
I'll stick with Otto Preminger's version. Thanks.
-
I'm up, I'm up - maybe seven hours of sleep - must do quick errand and then eat.
-
When the show’s open and the director goes AWOL, it becomes every man for himself. El Gallo went rogue, and it was up to JRand to bring him to heel.
-

Costco is a madhouse today. Do people think today is the holiday?

We were shopping today, too. It is a madhouse here, as well.

After a weekend away, I'm back to big-ass salads again. The food was good, though. Mostly.

Assuming my flights aren't cancelled, I'll be seeing Ragtime, Queen of Versailles, and Chess on Broadway next week, in that order. After my experience with Opening Night, I wanted to get to them soon after they opened, just in case.
-
This Saturday I'll be seeing a community theater production of Fun Home, which I haven't seen before. The actress playing Helen was the Isabel to my Pozzo when we did a concert production of Sousa's El Capitan.
-
Errand done and done. Food ordered and ordered.
-
Already caught up on stuff.
-
Schedule sent to cast.
-
Cinderella record sold.
-
Now there's something I can recommend to DR Jrand75! If you're not allergic to operetta on principle, Sousa's El Capitan is way less musty then you might think from an 1896 show. It also shows how politicians manipulating the press for their own ends is nothing at all new. The only complete recording I know is the one by Ohio Light Opera and it's pretty good.
-
Cinderella record sold.
That looked like something really sweet for the right person. Glad it's going to a good home!
-
I'd love to do a fully staged version of El Capitan sometime. Pozzo is just about the only musical theater character where I am the exact right physical type. And as long as I can keep singing, I don't think it's a role I'd age out of.
-
Sounds like a great trip, MichaelG.
-
Watching Let’s Dance, perhaps my least favorite Fred Astaire movie. The script and Betty Hutton are largely to blame.
-
There’s a Frank Loesser score. It’s lesser Loesser.
-
But it’s been cleaned up and looks pretty good.

The murder victim in Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? is named Allen Carstairs, which is also the name of the dead composer in The Bishop’s Wife.
-
Margaret Qualley is an interesting actress. She was Larry Hart’s ideal in Blue Moon. Now watching her is Ethan Coen’s bizarre Honey Don’t, a smart-ass neo-noir that isn’t always smart.
I did love the opening and a real title sequence.

Tonight's dinner party went spectacularly.

However, at 4:56pm, we got notified that all water in the building was going to be turned off. And at 5:00pm, that turned out to be true.

Nice advance notice, clods.

Fortunately, all the food was prepared.

However, we had to tell our guests that if they needed to use the bathroom, they wouldn't be able to flush.

Not the best way to start off.

Fortunately, the cold water came on about an hour and a half later.

It looks like we won't have hot water until sometime tomorrow.
