Well, you've read the notes, the notes were so 2025, and now it is time for you to post until the 2025 cows come home.

Topic of the Day: it turns out that I only read three books this year: Vegas Can Be Murder, Richard and Me, and Annabelle & Thatch. i loved them all. :)
-
And now, comments on posts from yesterday:
Oh, my goodness, Rodzinski! That definitely is "for cause"! :o
BK, it's great that the remedy for the cramping or muscle contractions that were driving you batty is a very easy fix!
Congrats to Keith's Wordle-in-3!
Thanks, Kevin, for the Wordle compliment! And Congrats on your Wordle-in-2! That's fantastic!
Loved the Everybody Loves Raymond clip, Laura!

Modern major miracle vibes for BK!
-
Good morning, all!

I slept well with one major exception, which I will tell you about in a moment. I knew Amazon Fresh, thanks to yesterday's student, was coming between 6:00 and 8:00, so I was out of bed abnd dressed by 5:30. For the second time this week, Amazon Fresh was very earlyl it arrived around 6:15, delivered by the poorest delivery person ever. The jerk literaly threw the five bags at me while I was trying to stand, hold a cane and get the delivery organized. I will have a real earful on my scorecard today.
-
Last night, I turned off the light, listened to three frisky kitties create havoc, and just as I nodded off, I was awakened by a huge crash. I yelled, Okay! Who wants to die? There was no sound, not a peep, while I was thinking, what did they knock over? Is anyone hurt? So, I turned on the light.
-
The wrestling cats had knocked over the paper shredder. The lower half, the receptacle for the trash, had fallen over, and Annabelle was looting through the small pieces of paper since the top half, the shredder, had disconnected from the fall, and a small portion of trah had spilled onto the floor. So, I had to get out of bed, put the shredder back together, and go back to bed.
-
This morning, I must vacuum, clean up the mess left by the Amazon Fresh delivery, and contact the super: my radiator is ice cold and nothing I've done so far is heating up the apartment.

TOD
My favorite book of 2025 was mine, primarily because I was getting to the point where I doubted it would be published.
Then, I'd say the next was BK's Richard and Me, a close tie with Vegas Can Be Murder.
After that, my friend Jack Viertel's The Glass Eel, a nice thriller set in rural Maine.
-
After that, my friend Jack Viertel's The Glass Eel, a nice thriller set in rural Maine.
Jack, of course, co-wrote that book with his son Josh Viertel. They combined to have the name J.J. Viertel for their work together.
Also, a perfect occasion to mention the advice of CHESS' Florence in "Nobody's Side" about liars and fraudsters masquerading as friends:
"Never take a stranger's advice.
Never let a friend fool you twice."
Please, Larry, I beg of you to take great care in any dealings with that charlatan. Recall how dismissively he behaved towards you before he realized with New Yorkers that you could be good for him financially.
-
Good morning.

You mentioned the excellence of the Clara, DR John G.

But how was the Giorgio?

As a member in good standing of the ACC (Annoying Cough Club), I drugged mine last night with the Tussin and the nighttime Nyquil, and had a solid sleep. I feel fine this morning, though still groggy. But it’s showtime, folks, and I must get myself into gear over the next several hours.

I should check that on google, though,

The critic I most agree with, Nell Minow, gave Ella Mackey a three-star review and talked about how, despite its flaws, it has some moments of greatness. She then put it on her 10-best list. I think I will see it.
-
TOD 1:
I’ve read 180+ books this year. My favorites, not surprisingly, have been the classics, from Flaubert’s Sentimental Education to the 1,500-page Tale of Genji, said to be the first novel. I reread Joyce’s Ulysses and some Faulkner (Collected Stories and The Reivers). I also loved rereading several P.G. Wodehouse novels.
-
TOD 2:
Of new releases, Vegas Can Be Murder, Richard and Me, and Annabelle and Thatch were all great. I wasn’t taken with a lot of the critical darlings. In fact the start of Flesh, the Man Booker prize, was so bad, I almost didn’t finish it. But it got better.
A few trusted writers came through: Fredrik Backman with My Friends, Wally Lamb with The River Is Waiting, and Han Kang with We Do Not Part.
There were two exceptional memoirs in addition to Richard and Me: Mother Mary Come to Me by Arundhati Roy and Book of Lives by Margaret Atwood.
-
TOD 1A:
A few more classics that made me happy:
The Tale of Tales, by Giambattista Basile
Three Comrades, by Erich Maria Remarque
Epictitus: Discourses and Selected Writings
Gilgamesh
The Law and the Lady, by Wilkie Collins
Evalina, by Fanny Burney
Lord Jim, by Joseph Conrad
-
TOD: this was a particularly notable year in books by HHW-ers: BK's Vegas Can Be Murder (which this household gave a five-star review) and the beautiful, page-turning Richard and Me, John G's Hill Country Winery Getaways (which in addition to being a terrific read and reference book, also makes for a fine stocking stuffer for the holidays - we've bought 7 copies so far for wine-loving friends) and Larry's Annabelle and Thatch, which surpassed even my already-high expectations.
And much appreciation to fellow DRs for their support of my new book this summer!

You are way ahead of me in the number of reads, plus I have been reading easier books lately. So far I have only read 133 books this year.

The PBS American Masters featuring Mr. DVD was most entertaining last night.
-
Oh my TOD.
Annabelle & Thatch, Vegas Can Be Murder, Richard & Me, and DR FREDDIE's books!
We are quite the literary group around these here parts.
-
Indiana and politics - I know DR RODZINSKI it was a most satisfying result.
-
I read two BK books this year. Both on vacation because that’s the only time I can dig into a book the way I must. Directed By and Richard and Me.
I’ve only begun Annabelle. And I got halfway through Goldman’s The Season at some point.

Just sent it - estimated arrival Wednesday, Dec. 17

We've watched episode 4 of the gay hockey series HEATED RIVALRY - and it's good to see that the rollicking romance and heat of what had caused such a stir in episodes 1 and 2 are back, as opposed to the tastefulness of episode 3 (which some on the net had referred to as something of a bait and switch).
Very interested to see if the next two weeks' episodes (episodes 5 and 6) bring together the two very different hockey player romance stories.

We just got back from Dad's 101st birthday lunch! We tuckered him out yesterday so we said our goodbyes, and head home tomorrow morning.
-
He surprised us yesterday by wanting dinner as well as lunch. He hasn't been up for dinner with us in years. And we went to the new aquarium in between, so he didn't get his usual nap.
-

I'm not surprised as he was young.

I agree with you, it is beautiful as well as an enjoyable read.
-
DR John G, I have your book, but it will most likely make my Best Books of 2026.
-
My favorite memoirs for the year:
Richard and Me: A Supercalifragilistic Friendship
It was a joy reading about this very special relationship.
Memorial Days by Geraldine Brooks a beautiful memoir about dealing with the sudden death of her husband Tony Horwitz.
Separately and together they are both very interesting people.
Angels on the Clothesline: A Memoir by Ani Tuzman
Growing up in an area with a large Jewish population I was somewhat sheltered by anti-semitism. This memoir by the child of Houlicost survivors living in a remote area where bigotry surrounds her.
-
TOD 2:
A few trusted writers came through: Fredrik Backman with My Friends, Wally Lamb with The River Is Waiting, and Han Kang with We Do Not Part.
I have My Friends on hold at my library. I know I should read The River is Waiting, yet everytime I think about getting it I pass. I did not love We Do Not Part like you did.
-
DR John, does it matter if I haven't read the first two books before reading Three Comrades?
-
Favorite mysteries/thrillers:
Heartwood by Amity Gaige
Impossible Fortune by Richard Osman
-
Favorite dystopian:
All the Water in the World by Eiren Caffall
-
Fiction:
A Sea of Unspoken Things
Tilt by Emma Pattee
About the BIG earthquake in Portland
-
Historical fiction:
Good Dirt by Charmaine Wilkerson
The Bright Years by Sarah Damoff

Started a book today called Minor Black Figures by gay novelist Brandon Taylor. I hope it holds up, because the first quarter is like Edith Wharton’s best. The observations are brittle and apt, the social criticism is razor sharp, and the characters are all too human, which means they can’t end happily. Still, the ride is excellent so far.
-
I want to read books with happy endings ;D
