Kentucky Fried Chicken was always a fast food option for my family. A bucket seemed to go a long way back in those days. They were always changing their style of fries. Sometimes I still crave it, specifically, even though it sure ain’t the best.

I watched a bit of the Golden Globes last night. Don't remember now what was noteworthy, except for a couple of very weird dresses. No one seemed to have gotten drunk before they had to speak, and I kind of miss those days.

TOD:  These days, I'm really liking the Korean fried chicken place, Bonchon Chicken - though it's not what you'd think if as "fast food prices."

Skip has always made a pretty amazing fried chicken - though these days I've been more partial to breaded chicken breast or breaded chicken tenders, which (to me) tastes just about the same as fried chicken.

Among the fast food fried chicken chains, KFC (back in the old days) and Popeye's were terrific.  Nathan's also made a delicious fried chicken.

The temperatures dropped, and I slept better last night. I had a long, strange dream I do not remember well enough to relate, something about a date with an old flame causing me to stand up a scheduled meeting with a good friend, who was not amused. It all took place around my parents' home where I grew up in Ohio, and my brother Macbeth was in it.

A very weird dream - I think it was all one dream - if not, it was three or four separate ones that I edited together exceptionally well.

It had to have been influenced by DR Elmore's speaking of his work on Encores! It sort of conflated a couple of musical theeder people and places I know in Connecticut, then seemed to morph into the event of Rob Berman's conducting of Titanic, which then was taking place in some performance space I supposedly had known as a student in Ohio, but I obviously made it up out of whole cloth. Each segment of it was fascinating and worth documenting, but it would be like writing a book to adequately describe it and all of the references.

The opening section also involved a huge array of foods laid out for people attending a celebratory theeder thing, food the likes of which I used to dream of occasionally but I hadn't had one of those in a few years. I'd almost be tempted to recreate the gigantic eggs/cheese/toast thing from the dream, but it would be a grotesquerie in real life.

I was introduced to Kentucky Fried Chicken at Colonel Sanders's original place in Corbin, Kentucky on one of our family car trips between Ohio and Florida in the early 1960s. My mom and dad had known about it and planned our route so we could stop there for lunch. It wasn't fast food then, at least not at that location, you went inside and ate in a large dining room -- not a fancy place, but already wildly popular and it was always crowded. This was in the early interstate highway days and I believe we were still going through that part of Kentucky on the old highways. I sure wish we had a snapshot from that stop, but I don't remember there ever being one.

I'm guessing that KFC was our go-to place in the years after that. My parents never knew Popeye's, and I'm blank on what other fast food chicken places there were -- except for the Red Barn chain, which we started going to in Florida and there were still a couple left in Ohio in the late 1960s. For me, they were another cheeseburger and fries place, but I think my parents liked the fried chicken they specialized in, and that's what people speak very highly of nowadays when someone brings the subject up.

This old postcard image is from way earlier than our early-60s visit, but it definitely evokes my memory of how the place looked. I think there were huge billboards hawking the place, and I'm sure there are loads of images out there, but this one will do for now.

We had KFC now and then starting when I was in the 7th grade or so.

Mostly it was for events like reunions or company coming.....the last time I had some was at one my niece's high school graduation about three years ago.

I've had Popeye's a couple of times....and the fried chicken at WalMart can be good sometimes. But I hate eating a bit of chicken and ending up with a big pile of bones.

Topic of the Day:  I don't remember when I first went (started going) to KFC, mainly because I don't really like fried chicken...well, I don't like the bones.  That grosses me out and always has. :P

Chicken sandwiches, nuggets and tenders are okay, and some have been quite good.  Just noting with bones.

I've only been to Chik-fil-A once (never again for...reasons), and Popeye's a few times.  Both are in Lacey, and to me, comparable to KFC.

Further thoughts on KFC -

The quality can absolutely be spotty these days, I totally agree, but when it's fresh and great, by God, it's fresh and great. And over the last couple of decades I grew to really appreciate their distinctive top secret seasoning. At some point we began getting only the Extra Crispy, and never looked back. I think that's a good enhancement.

I'd call KFC a "treat" meal. We don't seem to think of it except when there's some reason to bring in food and we want more of a "meal" than a burger. We also don't get it nearly as often as we used to, especially since Popeye's finally came to Danbury a decade or so ago. But when you're in the mood for that KFC combination with the sides, AND it's a good day for them, it's unbeatable. My sides: the cole slaw and mashed potatoes & gravy. Just typing it out makes me want some right now. For breakfast. Those flavors go together like nobody's business. I do think the cole slaw is too "milky", but it's still delicious and it beats out all other "too milky" slaws.

No. My grandmother lived in a dirt-poor white trash mountain holler next to the West Virginia state line. When we visited, my grandmother went out to the yard, grabbed a chicken, wrung its neck, plucked it, battered it, and fried it. It was very tasty/

I'm back from a five-minute visit to the dentist.

Five minutes, people.

At my last cleaning they noticed a tiny li'l pinprick size hole in my gum, just below the lower front teeth. Apparently "these things happen", and they wanted to check it after a few weeks to make sure it was closing up on its own which they tend to do. It did, and I was in the chair for only three minutes and outta there at NO CHARGE. (Worst case, if the hole was still there she might have suggested putting a suture in to close it up. So how nice that that wasn't required.)

Now, what's not to love about a trip to the dentist like that one? Eh? I ask you.

We used to visit an elderly German couple who lived on a tree farm in southern Indiana. We would always take them a bucket of KFC, which my dad hated because they used black pepper and he was convinced that would give him cancer. I liked it then, but not as much as Mom’s homemade version.

Years later, I visited Claudia Sanders in Shelbyville, which was named after the colonel’s wife. But by then, KFC was not as good as it once was, and the restaurant was more like a monument to church potlucks.

Back when I was eating fast food fried chicken as college student or an adult, it was usually Popeye's or Church's. I can't do that any more. I go to Starbird these days but always substitute the grilled chicken for the fried in their sandwiches.

We have been to Vancouver Island.  The first time we flew there when we lived in Ashland.  The second time was off of a cruise ship.

TOD - for carry out fried chicken we’re partial to Lee’s Famous Recipe, a chain that was founded in Lima, OH.  They have locations in 13 states (and British Columbia) and they’re mostly in Ohio and Kentucky.  I prefer their boneless strips with potato salad and green beans for sides.

In British Columbia? Well that was exciting till I found they’re all out on Vancouver Island.

ROAD TRIP!! ;D

And SEA!!

I should have waited to see if you responded.

But not waiting helped add a post for the page totals!  :)

Father Mother Sister Brother is a painful comedy about those families that are not close, that have nothing to say to each other, that can't wait to leave each other's company. The Mother scene with Charlotte Rampling and Cate Blanchette is my family to a T. (Or team if you saw the scene.)

It makes the Sister Brother sequence all the more touching. Their grief is real, so is the love they share.

DR singdaw I have been meaning to ask you how all of your new hires are doing?

They are doing pretty well and are all independent now. But there are dependability/attendance issues. That seems to be the way with young folks nowadays.

I haven't been out unplanned in over 8 years.

Watched an enjoyable 1970s low-budget film directed by Henny Youngman’s grandson or son.

Not much to it, but good scenes all over 1976 Manhattan and a bunch of actors who would go on to bigger careers.

Judy Kahan as a bike messenger in love with Tom Berenger. John Heard her platonic interest. Jill Eikenberry, Christina Pickle.
