That's what I thought. I guess that's why I assumed when you wrote that Lee had won a Drama Desk, I assumed he had beaten Raul or David for it.

I began with last night's THE TUDORS. Ah, the beginning of the end for Cardinal Woolsey. And I adored the Queen of Frane's retort to Brandon last night. Brilliant!

Next, I put in another episode of PLANET EARTH. This was episode #8 entitled "Jungles," and it contained fascinating glimpses of the rain forests in South America, New Guina, and most especially the Congo. Gorgeous images using time lapse photography of the various growing things on the forest floor, and then we go into the trees to see all manner of life there. One of the most fascinating things to watch was a very disturbing chimpanzee attack on another tribe of chimps. After they won, the chimps ATE the dead of the other tribe. I had never seen that before.

There seems to be some disagreement here about the pre-restoration state of "Becket".

Most of us have only what's on the DVD case to go by, and that information says the film was thought to be lost.

And then there were these articles:

Here is a Minneapolis Star-Tribune article on the restoration efforts on "Becket".

And here is a Hollywood Reporter story on the restoration.

I appreciate that there can be differences between what is reported and what is truth, but these all seem to agree.

I had planned on watching THE BLACK ROSE tonight, but in the mail today came CAN-CAN and PIGSKIN PARADE, and I couldn't wait to see what CAN-CAN was going to look like.

This was never been a favorite musical (though I like the songs from the original score and the interpolations into the score used in the film), but I've never seen a decent looking version of the movie on TV. It's either been pan and scanned (it was a Todd-AO film) or it's looked faded and/or grainy.

The DVD starts with a four minute Overture which I had never heard (I think the soundtrack album begins with the main title music only). The main titles were simply fabulous looking with bright colors and no grain at all.

And then the film starts, and certain shots look like 3-D! It's that sharp and clean, beyond anything I've ever seen this film looking like. The color seemed to fluctuate a bit in medium shots during the first number, but that's as far as I got before shutting everything down. I'll continue with it when I go back down later.

Since I've already cleaned the dining room this morning, I should be able to finish it before '24' begins tonight at 8.

I can't warm to CAN-CAN the musical....but it might help if it looks this good. I run hot and cold on Shirley MacClaine for some reason....

I don't think her singing is quite up to par in the film though she got better once she started doing more stage/club work. I suspect working on the SWEET CHARITY film made her get some vocal coaching since that was such a big singing role, and after that, she probably kept it up once she started doing a stage act.

I never saw the Broadway version of CAN-CAN, but I saw the revival tour with Chita Rivera and the Rockettes, and it was quite poor as a musical play. Chita was fabulous and all worked hard, but the book was REALLY bad.

Well... I just finished sorting and shredding about two months of mail, junk mail, receipts, catalogs, etc., etc., etc. (Ah, a King & I reference.) I didn't think I was going to get through everything, but, lo and behold I did! The saving grace came when I reached the bottom of the bag and found a bunch of magazines, newsletters and catalogs - all of those were weighting down the bag, and, consequently, were making think there was a lot of stuff in there to go through. Well, there was a lot of stuff, but not that not a lot of.

Now... To Splash or not to Splash? -Although, since I'm playing tomorrow morning, hmm....
