Coincidentally, I just came across my copy of the book of "Stephen Sondheim's Crossword Puzzles from New York Magazine". I've actually never completed of attempted one... They're just too difficult for me. Heck, just getting past his introduction and "Ground Rules" is a puzzle in itself - at least for me.

My very important project has hit a roadblock (surprise, surprise). It appears that duplicate data has been added to the database! No one thought of that possibility before beginning the project. My work is now on hold until they figure out what to do so I'm back to regular work.

West Side Story (the film version) was my first exposure to Sondheim. I saw it in the mid-60s.

There are too many to try and cull down to a favorite. Someone in a Tree, A Weekend in the Country, Losing My Mind, A Little Priest, Being Alive, With So Little To Be Sure Of, Rose's Turn and many more.

As for the Topic of the Day...

First Sondheim Song: "Send in the Clowns" - It just had to be since it's one of my mother's favorites. Of course, when I first heard it, I seriously doubt I knew who Stephen Sondheim was.

First Sondheim Show: Sweeney Todd at Toby's Dinner Theatre in Columbia, MD. An amazing production, and her (Toby's) solution for disposing the bodies "in the round" still entertains(?) me.

First Sondheim Show on Broadway: Into the Woods

First Sondheim Show I worked on: Company - What an amazing summer that was! The show was being produced by Arlington (VA) County as their annual "big musical" at the Lubber Run Amphitheatre - outside, and open to the public. Full cast, full ochestra! (including two keyboardists and two(!) percussionists), and a sort of full set. The director was from Australia, Brisbane I believe. Our Joanne was brilliant. They fired our original Amy just a few days before opening due to creative differences - and I still remember walking into rehearsal that night, and going over the "Getting Married Today" scene with the new Amy - watching the "old" Paul trying to hold back his anger and tears over what had happened... Then on opening night, Amy1 was in the audience wearing a t-shirt with "The Original Amy" on it... Then coming to the theatre/park the next day and seeing "Parental Advisory" signs posted - apparently, they had a lot of phone calls! And our closing performance got rained out, but we had a great party! -Oh, and I actually got paid, so, technically, it was my first professional theatrical gig too!

First Major Professional Production of a Sondheim show that I worked on: Sunday in the Park with George at Arena Stage in DC. It starred bk's own pals, Sal Viviano and Liz Larsen.

As for my favorite Sondheim song, hmm...

"Finishing the Hat", "Lesson #8" and/or "Move On" from Sunday.

Although, I have a very soft spot in my heart for some of his early works: "What More Do I Need?", "I Remember", and "So Many People" - which still manages to make me tear up if I play it for someone during an audition.

First Sondheim: it is family legend that when I could barely walk, and had never before shown an interest in the piano, I heard "Small World" on the radio (was that Vic Damone?), toddled over to the piano and plunked out the first few notes with nary a pause. It was that that convinced my Mom perhaps there was something unusual going on in my chubby little head and that's one reason I started piano lessons so early.

I got up so early this morning that I got the living room cleaned AND I also had time to watch another MR. WONG film - MR. WONG IN CHINATOWN. Betty quality film element for this one than the previous two but the mystery was a bit weaker. Still, fun.Marjorie Reynolds was introduced to the series in this installment.

Geez, DR MBarnum, for as much as you enjoy song and dance in Bollywood movies, don't you think something like GYPSY or WEST SIDE STORY would be appealing to you (or even pique yout curiosity)? We do talk about these shows a lot around here, and the film versions are readily available for rental.

Tuesday morning greetings! My workday started with a meeting at Panera and I'm just getting to my desk.

TOD - first awareness of a Sondheim lyric was when my parents came home from seeing Gypsy on tour in Detroit - my mom was quite taken with "If you wanna bump it, bump it with a trumpet."

First cast albums - West Side Story and Gypsy OCRs on LP, which were family-owned. First show seen - movie version of Gypsy. First recording I bought was probably Company OCR on LP, after seeing road company in Ann Arbor with Tandy Cronin as Amy. First Sondheim show seen in New York - A Little Night Music, summer 1974 when I was in the city for American Library Association annual conference.
