Memorial Day greetings!  Laura worked at the golf course this morning while Richard and I lolled around her nice cool house.  She was home in time for lunch, then she and I played in her craft room for several hours.  I’m about to put baked beans in the oven for our Memorial Day cookIN - too hot for a cookOUT.

I don't think it hit 100 here, but it did monstrously hot. How did it go?

Back from a Turkish dinner. Excellent food. Cecil was able to get out without a cane and he drove. That was good.

We're getting together for Chinese this Thursday.

Back to Phantom Thread. I think I'm going to skip to the end soon. Not even Harriet Harris can make me care.

Dinner sounds good.

It is nice to hear Cecil is doing so well.

Either I didn't pay enough attention, or I just didn't get what happened, but I'm going to have to read up on what other people say happened. :-\

From last night's posts:  I LOVE the very idea of the Impossible burger!

Is there a photo?

Fred, I didn't take a picture, but I found this on-line:

Starting to watch Bogie and Bacall in Dark Passage. Needed some action to relieve the gloom that Phantom Thread cast.

Was there an earlier burger discussion I missed??

A few weeks ago, I mentioned the Impossible Burger the first time I had one.

Had good luck at Half Price Books today with their 20% off sale. Picked up a CD of Willie Nelson singing standards. I didn't know about it. He does some favorites, including Fly Me to the Moon, Ain't Misbehavin', On the Street Where You Live, Always on My Mind and Come Rain or Shine.

I don't dislike The Beatles, and I enjoy some of their songs, but I wasn't specifically a fan at all.

TOD:
Every time Bruce asks this question, I think he's gathering song suggestions for his next Kritzerland show that will feature all Beatles tunes. But somehow that never happens...hmmmm.

Maybe he's writing a jukebox musical about The Beatles.

Billie's Gingerbread
From: Ruth Reichl, Delicious!
Makes: 1 cake

Cake:
Whole black peppercorns
Whole cloves
Whole cardamom
1 cinnamon stick
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
3 large eggs
1 large egg yolk
1 cup sour cream
1 ½ sticks (6 ounces) unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 cup sugar
2 large pieces fresh ginger root (1/4 cup, tightly packed, when finely grated)
Zest from 2 to 3 oranges (1 ½ teaspoons finely grated)

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter and flour a 6-cup Bundt pan. Grind your peppercorns, cloves and cardamom and measure out ¼ teaspoon of each. (You can use pre-ground spices, but the cake won't taste as good.)

2. Grind your cinnamon stick and measure out 1 teaspoon. (Again, you can use ground cinnamon if you must.) Whisk the flour with the baking powder, baking soda, spices and salt in a small bowl. In another small bowl, whisk the eggs and egg yolk into the sour cream. Set aside.

3. Cream the butter and sugar in a stand mixer until the mixture is light, fluffy, and almost white. This should take about 3 minutes.

4. Grate the ginger root — this is a lot of ginger — and the orange zest. Add them to the butter/sugar mixture. Beat the flour mixture and the egg mixture, alternating between the two, into the butter until each addition is incorporated. The batter should be as luxurious as mousse.

5. Spoon batter into the prepared pan and bake for about 40 minutes, until cake is golden and a wooden skewer comes out clean.

6. Remove to a rack and cool in the pan for 10 minutes.

Soak:
½ cup bourbon
1 ½ tablespoons sugar

1. While the cake cools in its pan, simmer the bourbon and the sugar in a small pot for about 4 minutes. It should reduce to about 1/3 cup.

2. While the cake is still in the pan, brush half the bourbon mixture onto its exposed surface (the bottom of the cake) with a pastry brush. Let the syrup soak in for a few minutes, then turn the cake out onto a rack. Gently brush the remaining mixture all over the cake.

Glaze:
¾ cup powdered sugar, sifted or put through a strainer
5 teaspoons orange juice

1. Once the cake is cooled, mix the sugar with the orange juice and either drizzle the glaze randomly over the cake or put it into a squeeze bottle and do a controlled drizzle.

That sounds REALLY good!

Just for the gosh darned heck of it, here's some photographic evidence from yesterday on Roosevelt (formerly Welfare, formerly Blackwell's) Island. Stacy Horn, left, is the author of the new book, and that's Kristi on the right.

Nice picture, ChasSmith!

My book group is reading DELICIOUS by Ruth Reichl.  It begins with the baking of gingerbread.  So far this cake is a theme throughout the book.  At the end (I peaked) the recipe is included.  I enjoy a good gingerbread and considered making the cake for the discussion.

I did a search to read the comments on the cake.  While they are very positive, I discovered this is really a ginger spice cake baked in a bundt pan, way too much food for our small group.

You should totally make this for the discussion. Even if you give the rest away.

I would absolutely do so if this was still my Ashland group.  Our 10:00am meetings were also yummy.  This is more casual at 4:00pm in the club house.  I have baked for it or taken wine but only a few people eat the snacks.  I am not sure I even want the ginger spice cake, though it would likely freeze well since it has sour cream.  I wanted to make it when I thought it was a regular gingerbread.

Make cupcakes and freeze them, then you can defrost one at a time.

Here are a few others of Bill Gold's posters, including a great one for Bullitt, My Fair Lady, The Exorcist and A Clockwork Orange.

Bill Gold, who designed the movies for everything from Casablanca to Funny Girl, has died. His poster for The Sting was one of my favorites.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/obituaries/bill-gold-designer-of-movie-posters-that-helped-shape-hollywoods-mystique-dies-at-97/2018/05/28/ad8f532e-6038-11e8-9ee3-49d6d4814c4c_story.html?hpid=hp_hp-cards_hp-card-obit%3Ahomepage%2Fcard&utm_term=.5f8f1d3a95fa

Wow!  He was 97 years old!

And he started his career with Yankee Doodle Dandy. His last was J. Edgar.
