Sometimes an answer comes from something you looked at quickly.

I see the problem with City Center Encores, and Jack Viertel having lashed out viciously, having thought I was making something out of nothing. (And Bk is mentioned, I think I told him some gossip BK mentioned.)

Look at this email (way down below) from Jack Viertel. No clue of what discrimination or being excluded for being in a "protected class" is to the target or victim at all. Jack wrote: "I don't keep track of Talkin' Broadway, and, given that you've asked City Center to boycott, I'm surprised you're not doing the same."

Jack, unless you've gained understanding since then, the idea of protesting discrimination and Human Rights abuse is:
That they were not letting me in, and I wanted to be allowed in. To any and all of the things they offer anyone else in the public, and to any artists. Their networking events. Their discussions.
That they were not allowing coverage or press releases of my work, and I wanted them to allow coverage off my work.
That when I was in a festival with 25 shows (MITF), because they embargoed any press releases that included my work, they left out the whole festival of 25 shows that period, letting the festival know the consequences of ever choosing my work again. The point is they were not allowing me in. I wanted to be allowed in.
How did you dramaturge Hairspray? The August Wilson plays? It can go on and on! Jack, you're on the inside always looking out!
I think I got the Encores Human Rights policy pretty right after all.

Well, I feel the same about ol' Jack, as you know. And anything he's written doesn't interest me either because he's a pedantic twit. I doubt he even knows who I am. I had his number when Time and Again was being done out here and I've had it ever since.

BK, I think the thing was the subject being inside, not that you said it.

He's never dissed you, not in front of me or Skip, as far as I know. Just said even he had to let all the ideas, including yours, go into the idea hopper. Yours were always taken seriously. It sounded (before I met you) in 1996 that the group really knew your work.

I'm listening to the Houston Grand Opera performance of Porgy and Bess, a production I saw here at the Ahmanson twice and really enjoyed. I had the LP set of this when it came out but don't really remember listening to it much. I got the CD when it came out and didn't listen to it more than once. Listening now I understand why - it is one of the worst-produced albums I've ever heard. Its producer, at that time, was so full of himself and had all these "ideas" about cast albums and sound. His work on the Sondheim shows was fine, but this thing is just awful. First of all, the CD itself is mastered very low - then you add to that the producer's "vision" of sound - where after the initial orchestral opening the next six minutes are so low you can barely hear them - I'm sure he had something in his head why it should be like that but it doesn't work. Period. Then the mix is just silly - sometimes the vocals are so low you can barely hear them, but then you can literally hear him raising the faders to bring up the band for what he perceives is an important orchestral flourish. Sound-wise, the recording has no life at all - the cast is fine and it's obviously not their fault.
