Does anyone here celebrate Mardi Gras, apart from John G and his po'boy?

Finishing up a Jane Smiley novel, At Paradise Gate, that has been hard to take, which is probably why I wanted to read it. It's about a family gathering in the old homestead while the father is dying.

That would be hard for me to read.

I still haven't read anything by Smiley.  I've had "A Thousand Acres" on my to read list for a long time.

I guess I REALLY need to make some changes in my sleeping habits.

I believe the difference between your lack of sleep is actual insomnia.  I attempt to sleep while you willingly stay up late ;)

Everyone knows sleep is important, but most of the articles I see on how to sleep better seem to assume that their suggestions are all doable. What if you have noisy neighbors? What if you live in an apartment and can't control your environment that much? Ugh!

Or you watch what you eat at night, exercise during the day, go to bed and sleep at a reasonable time, and then are wide away after 10 minutes to an hour of sleep  ???

Criterion is having a 50% off sale on its web site today. I got the new double-disc True Stories set and Hitchcock's Notorious. I could watch that latter movie as much as Casablanca.

I don't know why, but I usually can't find something I want when the sales are on.  I hate that. >:(

My problem is that I can't recall what I wanted when the sale is on. I now keep a list and just wait until the price is right.

LOL.  I would need that list.

Fat Tuesday was a BIG deal when we lived outside of Detroit.  It seemed as if everyone was eating a paczki.  I never did get to try one of these.

So, is there a difference between this and a jelly donut, or is it just the Polish name for the same thing?

I have seen them deep fried and filled with all sorts of fillings.  I looked up your question and found this....
"Paczki are made of a very rich, sweet yeast dough consisting of eggs, butter and milk, donuts' dough is usually not nearly as rich. ... About the only difference is that Pączki uses a richer dough than jelly donuts or Berliners."

Because of the attention that Co-op has brought to the original Pennebaker documentary about the recording of Company, apparently Criterion is going to release the original.

Last night we watched the first episode of the ABC Mysteries with John Malkovich as Hercule Poirot.  To my surprise we liked it and I find no fault in Malkovich's performance.  I think the fact that we are not Poirot purest makes a difference.

The great Jude Kaye has somehow been cast as both Barbara Cartland and Queen Elizabeth in a new musical version of Princess Diana.

And now, I must leave.  Time to go to the theater and make some audio magic happen!

Be back later.

Back, from making some audio magic happen with some kids playing Pippin!

No, not really. But these were good kids who are serious about playing their best in their pit, and it was a short but fun time.

Damn it to HELL, I wish I had some appropriate food with which to celebrate Mardi Gras right about now.

We usually luck out in finding a nice King Cake in the supermarket. Not so this week, for some reason.

This looks better than a typical jelly doughnut. For one thing, the jelly doughnuts I usually see are covered in powdered sugar, and the glaze on this looks so much more appealing. And the dough looks more substantial. Yep, one of these would be great tomorrow morning.
