Thanks, Larry, but there's some great news! Yesterday, I brought home my mom's VCR (she doesn't really use it anymore), and I just now hooked it up to my DVD burner and it works! I found a VHS tape that could be eaten (it was of two concerts that I have on laserdisc, actually) and it played with no trouble! WHEW!!

And then just to try again, I turned on my VCR with the stuck family tape and it popped right out!! Another WHEW!! Then, I put that in my mom's VCR and it works perfectly!!! HALLA-FREAKIN'-LOOYA!!

I'm now recording the tape to my DVD burner, but it's not of my niece. Evidently, it's old (probably 8mm) film from when my dad was growing up! It's just a bunch of random short family films with random music playing.
