I saw Patti LuPone, Boyd Gaines, Laura Benanti and David Yazbeck in Gypsy. It was one of the best nights of theater I’ve ever experienced.

I have only seen the show live one other time. That was in summer stock, and it didn’t quite work. The ferocity was downplayed.

I hate the Rosalind Russell version, though Natalie Wood is good. Bette Midler is better, but not by much.

Of the recordings, Ethel is best and a bootleg of her final performance suggests she would have been outrageous. I own but never listen to any of the others. The overture never sounds quite right, too smooth or too perfect, the wail of the trumpet too pretty.

Tyne Daly was sick the day they recorded the album, according to all concerned. Which could be why she’s so bad on it. She sounds much better in all of the clips I’ve seen. (She doesn’t sound like herself—just like Bette Midler in the new Hello, Dolly!)

Of the other recordings I have, I like them in this order:

Bette Midler

Liza Minnelli sang a bunch of the songs in various venues. I’m glad she never played the part. I’m glad Barbra hasn’t either.

On Tuesday afternoon I finally go in to have my plate fitted for my lower partial.....after ALL this time....it's been since December 21 last year!

Then we'll see how long it takes to get it done.

I enjoyed reading about MR BK's thoughts on GYPSY.

My first experience was the movie and the soundtrack - which I still enjoy. I like Rosalind Russell a lot.....and of course Natalie Wood....the Baby/Dainty Junes are another story......"I want to ACT!"

I have never seen it live - although I was in a production at our theatre which I didn't much like....for various reasons. The actress playing the lead didn't understand the character at all - neither did her husband the director.

She thought Rose was a heroine and everyone would love her as a great mother - she played it that way.....weird.

Good conversation about the GYPSYs. Here's something I'm wondering:

How have the original orchestrations fared through all of these revivals? Leaving aside any necessary transpositions, if any, which of these productions have utilized the originals with a full orchestra, and which have juiced or outright altered them along the way?

We are bracing for a snow-pocalypse that's supposed to start tomorrow evening. By Tuesday midday we could have about 8 inches of new snow on top what we already have. The older I get the better I understand why senior citizens go south for the winter.

That's terrible about Singdaw in jail, but something is clearly wrong with the Facebook algorithms because that's happening to a lot of people - old posts from years ago causing Facebook jail - ultimately, that's why I was there for three days - two posts from last year, neither identified. I'm telling you, there's a class action lawsuit here - because they don't give anyone a way to contest these things or complain and clearly they're glitching and causing this crap.

They have thinned out over the years. The Peters production had a tiny band and it sounded tinny, thin and underwhelming, almost an afterthought.

Watching an Iranian film called Taste of Cherry about a man who wants to commit suicide, but also wants to make sure he's properly buried. I imagine the film will ultimately be uplifting, but the journey is depressing. I have made it to the halfway point. It's not long, so I'll probably stay with it. I'm just not in the mood for it.
