Last night we watched the Criterion blu-ray of Midnight Cowboy, which I last saw in 1969 with my friend Peter Oberlink. I remembered almost none of the film, only Sylvia Miles, Bob Balaban's confession that he had no money to pay Joe, the Warhol-esque party, Bernard Hughes' beating in the hotel, and Hoffman's death on the bus. I never imagined in 1969 that one day Barney Hughes and his wife would be two of my favorite people or that I would cry like a baby when I learned of his death.

I need to watch that again. About all I remember is Hoffman’s death on the bus.

One point in Chili's favor:  they haven't [yet] changed their name to "C's." Like DQ, IHOP, and KFC before them.

I’m sure Thatch was fine, but probably as freaked out by sudden assault as a cat can be. He’s now entitled to plenty of pettings through the day...if he permits such things...and perhaps an extra piece of turkey.

Our current cat bowl location is great in all respects, except for the fact that it’s below a spot where something could pretty easily be knocked off. I’m always adjusting the few little things on it to minimize danger, and in fact there’s one thing I believe I’m going to insist be relocated.

I'm glad Thatch is OK, as well. I'm sure the sudden shock isn't good for his heart.

I've been reading the Moonshine and Mistletoe teleplay. The writer needs to read a few biographies of Appalachian mountain people like Loretta Lynn and Jean Ritchie and how hard life was before electricity and indoor plumbing arrived in the mountain hollows. It's a little too cute and contemporary. But, it's a first draft.

I sometimes think I’ve seen Midnight Cowboy more times, or more often, than anybody. But there was a long period in which I hadn’t, and I, too, then found I’d forgotten or greatly confused things in my mind. But what a freakin’ masterpiece.

DR Elmore, please say something more about Bernard Hughes. He was such an amazing presence in those days.

I’ve had only two (2) meals from C’s — the first, many years ago, which was a disappointment, and the second, a takeout one just a few months back that just happened to be tasty and satisfying. So I guess one might say the jury is out. I think I’ll play it safe and just leave them out.

More stories from Theatre in Middletown, please! Do I smell potential for a miniseries?

Hughes and Christine Ebersole were great in a sitcom called The Cavanaughs. The scripts were never up their talents.

Will the writer be open to such suggestions? One of the reasons I liked the original was that it wasn’t candy coated.

It's been a tense morning alreadyI live in a house of cards, and while I was struggling to rise from the computer chair, a stack of CDs that I had stupidly let pile up in a flimsy stack fell onto the floor because of the wobbling table. The result was roo many discs on the loose and a few broken cases.  Sadly, the stack fell on Thatch who was eating his breakfast.  He seems to be okay now, but I was terrified for around 30 minutes - while he wqent into hiding and I couldn't find him - that I'd injured him.

Oh, no!  Good to know that he's okay.

BK, I'm hoping with DR George that your dress rehearsal bodes for a good opening. I have a memory from 1977 or so of a dress rehearsal of The Fantasticks, in which DR Ginny plated The Mute, where everything went wrong in the first 15 minutes: props not in place and other aggravations.  I blew up, gave the crew 15 minutes to get their shit together, and we began again from the top.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  Vibes for a successful opening!  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And then, DR Elmore, there was the “Charlie Brown” dress rehearsal in which I, as Lucy, took a nosedive off the front of the stage at the end of the opening number.
Additional vibes for DR George and company…
Me?? ???
