Good evening. Spent the morning digging up the septic tank covers so we can get the tank cleaned out. Fun!

Remembering this Erma Bombeck book title

"The Grass Is Always Greener over the Septic Tank"
https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-grass-is-always-greener-over-the-septic-tank-erma-bombeck/1000112952

My mom had that book!

I am:      BACK.

Back from the soggy foggy spongebottom.

And you know what? The drive home from Norwalk was soggy and foggy. Fancy that. We apparently had some rainstorms or thunderstorms come through while I was holed up in the UN-air-conditioned auditorium, which was soggy enough - no matter who you ask - cast, crew, orchestra, audience. Thankfully, it wasn't raining while I was out driving, because I hate nothing worse than that at night. But it is DANK.

In Canada they say “pasta” in a way that rhymes with “Shasta.”

I hear about bad pizza pretty much everywhere, from people who are from the northeast and are trying to find decent pizza in other regions.

And I don't understand the problem. You need an oven -- presumably, or preferably, a brick one -- and

(wait for it)

a recipe. One that's proven. One that works. Why can't there be great pizza ANYWHERE?

I had a bolognaise pass-ta dish myself. Bulked it up with some meatballs. I did not go hungry.

In Canada, did I mention this? There’s a chain called Boston Pizza. Now whoever associates Boston and pizza in the states? Nobody. Yet Boston Pizza is rather good. Generous, anyways.

Disclaimer:  When I lived in L.A. I didn't know from pizza. I ate wherever a group was going to eat. I did takeout from Domino's when one was close to me. I had no expectations. I liked it all.

When the Chicago deep-dish style came to L.A. I dutifully had some and probably liked it fine. But I didn't care. All pizza was good.

I'm sure I wouldn't be saying that now, but that's how it was. When life was simple. And serene.

There is also a chain called “Pizza Pizza” that looks like Little Caesar’s but there are also Little Caesar’s, which are forbidden from using the phrase “pizza pizza.” Go know.

Was that in the late 1970s? The deep-dish invasion? Was it Numero Uno or something else?

I must say I grew up near Chicago and never really heard about deep dish until much later.

The quality of frozen pizzas you make at home has improved quite a bit in recent years.

I hear tell that "deep dish" isn't necessarily a true Chicago style. But I didn't live there long enough to get into pizza and learn all of that. What I did learn about was the hot dogs and Italian beef sandwiches. Lordy, I could eat a couple right now.

My distaste for SpongeBob is well known to my children. Thus I cannot imagine enduring as much of that as you recently have, Chas. But maybe live people make it better somehow.

Hot dogs were definitely a Chicago thing. Real Vienna beef!
In another branding oddity, there was a small chain, Bozo Hot Dogs, but because Bozo’s Circus was big on WGN, they made one of the letter “o”s into a happy face and said they were “Boz Hot Dogs.” But everyone still called them “Bozo’s.”

7 hours of rehearsal today (3 hours of chamber chorus, 4 hours of opera staging) so I'm tired. Followed by 4 more hours of opera staging tomorrow. The staging rehearsals are so much fun - our principal singers are amazing. It gets pretty loud in our rehearsal space.

We have two children supers for one scene and both are children of present or past chorus members. One of them is a veteran - she's supered at San Francisco Opera after playing Trouble in our last production of Butterfly. For the other it's his stage debut.

If no one has mentioned this, here it is:  The attempt at preserving the cottage near Charleston, SC where Porgy and Bess was conceived:

I think if we all kicked in a few mil...
