DR John G.,

What do you do with all these pies? Do you have a Youtube cooking channel you haven't told us about?

I take them to church or to dinners or dance class. I get them out of my house.

When I was 13 or 14, my Spanish teacher noticed I couldn’t read the chalkboard from the middle of the classroom. Sure enough, I was nearsighted. I still read without my spectacles.

Our city councilman came to the food pantry this morning. I hope it leads to a grant of some sort.

I need glasses or contact lenses in general, but reading my phone is so much easier without glasses or lenses.

Vibes that a grant for the food pantry happens.

Henry Jaglom has died. I wish I could say I enjoyed his movies, but I never found one I liked.

I wonder why my nearsightedness wouldn't have been obvious in my first and second grade classrooms prior to the bus stop revelation.

Hmmm...

Maybe it was. I truly don't remember.

I do remember sitting in the classrooms, certainly able to see the large cursive alphabet above the chalkboard in one of those grades.

Did it again. I was looking for something and found something else that was in a weird place and I'd forgotten about it for a long time. It's that set of Annette recordings in the long vertical box -- 2 CDs and a book. I should play it.

I'll betcha DR Jrand75 has that one. This might be my only actual Annette thing, unless I find a record or two, probably with the Disney stuff.

Oh, and I not only didn't find what I WAS looking for, I now forget what it was. Make of that what you will...

TOD: I got my first glasses in my 40s, when I couldn't read the lyrics in the crappy edition of Carmina Burana the chorus provided us. I made my first optometrist appointment and purchased the beautiful, newly engraved vocal score about the same day. I've always had progressive lenses, with the prescription changing every few years.

My wife first got glasses when she about 6 or 7, and was amazed to discover there were cracks in the sidewalk.

Bad photocopy? Or the edition was hard to read, itself, with small print?

The latter. It had really tiny lyrics that were hard to read even with my glasses, and impossible without. And that piece has lots of fast-moving lyrics!

From last night:

About the number of cats one might have, my niece now has seven, count 'em, SEVEN cats!  She got another one last month...but don't tell my mom!  She doesn't know, and probably shouldn't, just yet, anyway. ;)

That's funny.  Your niece lives with your sister, right?  That means your sister also has 7 cats now ;D

Did she get a kitten or adopt an older cat?

That's great eye news from BK. Even better when you get custom made glasses that are specific for each eye.

I need that except my vision has always been difficult to correct so it isn't worth it for me to do this.

Jane and others who are interested - Leslie Odom, Jr. news

"Of course, some megahits and stars attract far higher prices: When Leslie Odom Jr. returned to the cast of 'Hamilton' on Sept. 9, the top ticket price was $1,200. The price will climb to $1,500 by the time he leaves again in November."

Age 70:  I was now a candidate for cataract surgery, but I delayed for a couple of years - maybe because of the pandemic, I don't remember - but I finally got seen by my first ever opthalmologist who agreed that it was absolutely time, and she would do the surgeries. There are a few ways you can go in choosing what your new internal lens will be, and since I had never in my life had 20/20 distance vision, AND I wanted it all covered by insurance, I chose the standard distance lenses in both eyes. That meant from that day forward I would forever require reading glasses, and I was fine with that, because now both eyes would be the same and standard corrective strengths would work equally for both. For the first time in years, my vision would be "balanced". And it's been great. Since I'm an experienced contact lens wearer, I also have the option to do "mono-vision" again by wearing a closer lens in one eye so I don't have to bother with glasses at any time that I'd rather not be encumbered with them. Haven't done that yet, but I still might.

Your long post was very interesting.  You should also know how lucky you are that you ended up with 20/20 in both eyes.  I certainly didn't.  I know many people, including Keith who do not end up with equal vision.  He is fine those because his vision still improved more than mine did after the surgery.

My eye doctor warned me that I would miss my wonderful close up vision if I put the corrected lenses in, still I love not having to wearing glasses.  They were always falling off my face, hurt my nose and sometimes were very painful behind my ears.

Reading Masters of Atlantis, a Charles Portis novel that’s really funny. There’s also some remarkable dialogue, such as this:

“No more fandangos for you! Hand over those castanets!”
