TOD: I'm a wine guy, but I also like beer and single-malt Scotch. I'm not much of a cocktail fan, except at one restaurant that makes them really well with great flavors that match their food better than beer or wine do.

I like a good single-malt Scotch.  Do you have favorites?  If I don't have a menu in front of me I will usually begin with a Glenlevit as it is usually an option.

For peaty Islay malts, I prefer Lagavulin. For Highland malts, I love Macallan 18-year Single-Cask, but it's gotten extremely expensive over the years.

My first chorus director (and my college band's composer in residence) introduced me to single-malt Scotch. So I have a soft spot for that first one, Knockando. They lost their USA distribution many years ago, alas.

That first chorus wasn't all that great - which fit me well as a novice singer switching from trumpet - but the parties were world-class!

When we visited the highlands we toured Macallan and found a favorite pub restaurant in town. On our second night there, who was eating at the table next to us? The head of Glenlivet!

There's a great whisky store in Edinburgh and London, Cadogan, that does their own bottlings that you can't find outside of their stores. I've had a couple of beauties from there.

Any other favorites besides that and Glenlivet?

I guess I need to go to Scotland to try this.

Keith like a Rye Manhattan, or an Old Fashioned with bourbon.  He rarely drinks the whiskey straight.  I on the otherhand love it straight.

Keith doesn't care for scotch, yet he is the one that told me to order a Glenlevet on our first trip to the UK.

I tend to forget when it has been awhile since I have been able to order other favorites.

This is an excellent plan. We did find the distillery and took pictures of it with the "No tours" sign in front (which we knew before we drove there). It's a favorite of my brother-in-law's so we've brought back bottles for him and for us on different trips to the UK.

You can know what is popular with a good reputation even if you don't personally like that type of beverage so much

True.  When we were in Ireland, and the nice bartender at our hotel was happy to talk about the various Irish Whiskeys and let me sample many of them, it was Keith who told me to try Bushmill's.  It was the bartender who included it with about ten different whiskeys he put out for me to consider.

Do you use the Cayman Jack canned margaritas, DR Laura? I like those.

I'm pretty sure DR John G. wouldn't like them. They're carbonated and sweet.

When we go out with Keith's cousin her partner always suggests a scotch for me to order.  He is from Scotland and the first time we went out with him he was thrilled that I ordered scotch, and that I ordered it neat.

Since discovering Irish Whiskey I don't order bourbon like I used to.  I would usually get Woodford Reserve, and occassionally Blanton's, Basil Haydon, or Michter's.
