TOD: Never went to KFC as a kid. I've really only picked up something there a couple of times as an adult.

Topic of the Day:  I don't remember when I first went (started going) to KFC, mainly because I don't really like fried chicken...well, I don't like the bones.  That grosses me out and always has. :P

Chicken sandwiches, nuggets and tenders are okay, and some have been quite good.  Just noting with bones.

I've only been to Chik-fil-A once (never again for...reasons), and Popeye's a few times.  Both are in Lacey, and to me, comparable to KFC.

Further thoughts on KFC -

The quality can absolutely be spotty these days, I totally agree, but when it's fresh and great, by God, it's fresh and great. And over the last couple of decades I grew to really appreciate their distinctive top secret seasoning. At some point we began getting only the Extra Crispy, and never looked back. I think that's a good enhancement.

I'd call KFC a "treat" meal. We don't seem to think of it except when there's some reason to bring in food and we want more of a "meal" than a burger. We also don't get it nearly as often as we used to, especially since Popeye's finally came to Danbury a decade or so ago. But when you're in the mood for that KFC combination with the sides, AND it's a good day for them, it's unbeatable. My sides: the cole slaw and mashed potatoes & gravy. Just typing it out makes me want some right now. For breakfast. Those flavors go together like nobody's business. I do think the cole slaw is too "milky", but it's still delicious and it beats out all other "too milky" slaws.

This old postcard image is from way earlier than our early-60s visit, but it definitely evokes my memory of how the place looked. I think there were huge billboards hawking the place, and I'm sure there are loads of images out there, but this one will do for now.

DR Elmore, were you ever there in your Kentucky days?

No. My grandmother lived in a dirt-poor white trash mountain holler next to the West Virginia state line. When we visited, my grandmother went out to the yard, grabbed a chicken, wrung its neck, plucked it, battered it, and fried it. It was very tasty/

I need a podiatrist who makes homecare visits. My damned health insurance was no help at all when I just asked about this. WTF?

I'm back from a five-minute visit to the dentist.

Five minutes, people.

At my last cleaning they noticed a tiny li'l pinprick size hole in my gum, just below the lower front teeth. Apparently "these things happen", and they wanted to check it after a few weeks to make sure it was closing up on its own which they tend to do. It did, and I was in the chair for only three minutes and outta there at NO CHARGE. (Worst case, if the hole was still there she might have suggested putting a suture in to close it up. So how nice that that wasn't required.)

Now, what's not to love about a trip to the dentist like that one? Eh? I ask you.

That's what I'd call a great dental visit!

Monday afternoon greetings!  It’s sunny but cold here in SW Ohio and I’m determined to finish putting the Christmas decorations away today.

TOD - for carry out fried chicken we’re partial to Lee’s Famous Recipe, a chain that was founded in Lima, OH.  They have locations in 13 states (and British Columbia) and they’re mostly in Ohio and Kentucky.  I prefer their boneless strips with potato salad and green beans for sides.

We used to visit an elderly German couple who lived on a tree farm in southern Indiana. We would always take them a bucket of KFC, which my dad hated because they used black pepper and he was convinced that would give him cancer. I liked it then, but not as much as Mom’s homemade version.

Years later, I visited Claudia Sanders in Shelbyville, which was named after the colonel’s wife. But by then, KFC was not as good as it once was, and the restaurant was more like a monument to church potlucks.

The kids are mostly well behaved. They’re just not interested in learning what I have had to teach, which is science dealing with photosynthesis and the food chain.
