I'm up, I'm up.  Overcast outside.  Hopefully that will burn off and reveal beautiful blue skies.

MALACOSTRACON - to me, this word sounds like a convention for some underworld types.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Last night I dreamed I danced in my Maidenform bra.  And when I woke up my pillow was gone.

So, BK:  What malacostracan are you dining upon this evening?

Krill stew?

Wood louse etouffe?

Lobster?

Crab?

Well - yes it is a small world DR BEN - don't you love when things like that happen.

DR VIXMOM you have my snow sympathies.  I hate winter weather - if I was the only one on the road, I might be okay - but people in Indiana especially those with SUV's want to drive as if nothing was different.  Well....going forward is one thing, stopping is another.

DRMATTH - I am thinking that Rambeau got the nomination for downing that glass of beer in one take.  And it's interesting that it looks like the stage manager has a case of jungle fever at the Joan's party.  I was thinking the guy who played the producer was Sammy Colt  - looks like him - turns out it was James Todd who played John Jacob Astor in TITANIC (1953).

I have the Nelson Eddy OKLAHOMA! on LP - purchased for 50 cents at the Salvation Army.  It was only recording of It's A Scandal! It's A Outrage! I had EVER heard!

I am waiting for a call re get-together.  Maybe it's not happening.  I have plenty to do one way or the other.  The overcast has burned off and the skies are blue.  Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Last night's "Will and Grace" -- I find that Ed Byrnes as a new beau for Grace is even LESS interesting than Debra Messing's "Grace," which I thought would be nearly impossible.

Nice bits with Will, Karen and Pastry Chef.

And Jack (Sean Hayes) can milk more comedy out of a partially opened door than anybody on the face of the earth.

The last two weeks have had several hilarious bits by the cast.

Ed Burns was completing his three episode arc, and I'm not sure he's coming back. For a big man, he has about the highest pitched voice I've ever heard. Also, he, like Harry Connick, Jr, before him, is not adept at comedy.

I did break down and buy that entire boxed set of classic comedies. Looking on it at a price-per-movie basis, it was silly not to get them all, saving anywhere from $5-13 apiece on their prices if bought separately.

Oh, sweet Media!

DVD-Going through the Penn and Tellers bit by bit.
CD-Scott Walker "Boy Genius". Weird dude.
LP-Homer & Jethro "Cornfucius Say". I guess Cornfucious was a non-PC character Homer and Jethro utilized in Corn Flakes commercials. This LP features a funny Beatles potshot called "Gonna Send 'Em Home".

Media check:

DVD: NEATH ARIZONA SKIES and WINDS OF THE WASTELANDS, two early 1930s John Wayne B-westerns made before he hit it big...fun movies!!

Up next are two Japanese films, UNDERWORLD BEAUTY (1958) and BLACK TIGHTS KILLERS (1966), by the director that BK had been talking about...I am looking very forward to watching both!!

BK, I cannot remember if you had seen these two films already or not!

Homer & Jethro also sang that country classic - There's a empty hanger in my closet tonight, since you took the shirt off my back.

BLACK TIGHTS KILLERS sounds like it should star Yvette Vickers and Marla English, though I am sure it doesn't.

I have seen both films, and they are both wild and wacky, especially Black Tights Killers - you may not like it, but it's UNIQUE!

MALACOSTRACAN!

Not doing the get-together - we'll try for next week.

What was the song that the Nairobi Trio played?  Was it an original song?

On my lunch hour I went up to the Equity office in midtown and what to my wondering eye should appear but a postcard for DR Penny O's show Jewish Thighs on Broadway. I picked up a copy. Maybe I'll have Penny sign it on March 19th when her fan club goes to the show. Along with Miss Orloff's name is our other DR, MR Jose Simbulan Music Director. Some kind of publicity is happening! The excitement builds. The picture on the front of the postcard, BTW, is the cover of Penny's book.

DRPogue, the Village Light Opera Group's conductor is Ron Noll, father of Christianne and a lovely gentleman.  I wish his orchestra were better; that poor concert master doesn't know what to do with a violin solo in the Act Two Interlude.

You have been busy!

Pogue is balling the Jack?  Hope La Jolie Femme doesn't find out.  How did you get to Indy so fast, anyway?   :o

I love Gambit, too.  I saw it shortly after I fell head over heels in love with Shirley MacLaine after having seen Sweet Charity.  That first big twist about 20 minutes in is great.

What if you went to your mailbox and there was a package in it from someone named Ann in Tacoma and you had absolutely no idea what it could be?  What if you walked with great expectation toward your house only to find even more packages waiting for you on the front porch?  What if it suddenly dawned on you that Ann in Tacoma is our very own HHW Ann and that you finally had What If?  And what if the other packages on your porch led you in a very neat segue to a media check:

CD:  Richard Shindell Vuelta.  This guy is fabulous.  You have probably never heard of him, as I hadn't until he was played on OPB last week.  I was so blown away by the song I heard (The Island, not to be confused with the Ivan Lins tune of the same name), that when they didn't back announce who it was I spent a couple of days tracking down the DJ (who pre-records his show) to find out who it was.  Beautiful, folkish narrative tunes that have a heft to their lyrics that I haven't heard in years.  I'm going to arrange The Island for Tigard Pops.  He reminds me a bit of Leonard Cohen, though he's not quite so dour and sings a good deal better than Leonard.

DVD:  Oy, my MGM madness continues.  Up now:  The Island of Dr. Moreau.  Oy.  Marlon Brando in kabuki makeup doing a weird falsetto version of Fletcher Christian.  Oy.  The movie looks fabulous, though, but it's hard to believe this is a John Frankenheimer film.

Here's the line in The Island that made the hairs on my neck stand up in attention.  It may not have been intended as such, but I find it an unbelievable indictment of American arrogance, especially as practiced by a certain brain-dead President:

The lucky few who call it home
Are prosperous and confident
And they manifest a certainty
That, come what may, things will not be otherwise

This guy is my favorite new singer/songwriter.
