Title: GOOD INTENTIONS
Post by: bk on April 19, 2009, 12:17:21 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had good intentions, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they've got good intentions but aren't coming home any time soon.

Dear George, I'm glad you got to hear the show. And that you got some help.

Me, too.  Fortunately (for us working concessions), there wasn't a big house.  We were told that about 425 tickets were pre-sold, but after the show started, they counted the ticket stubs for the people who actually came and there were only 340 stubs.

I think DR George has already mentioned this documentary.

Comcast is still having problems in my area and several stations are "Available Shortly" including ABC-HD.  Most distressing.  I now have contacted them TWICE and they say they are "aware of the problem" and they are "working to resolve it" - at least that's what the Indian women have typed in the LIVE communication to me.

DR TCB asked where Sean McDermott did South Pacific.

Here is the answer

The recording of South Pacific is actually a studio recording (1996). It is a 2cd release with all the songs, (including reprises) incidental music and entr'acte and exit music.

The main performers on the cd are people who played the role somewhere.

Paige O'Hara (Nellie) did the show in Australia.
Justino Diaz (Emile) FCM's production in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Sean McDermott (Joe) Pace Organization Tour

other people on the recording

Pat Suziki (Bloody Mary on the US release) Long Beach Light Opera
Shezwae Powell (Bloody Mary on the UK release)
Brian Greene (Luthur)

Ron Raines (Harbison) (in a non-singing role!)
Caroline O'Connor (Murphy-nurse)
Nicholas Colicos (Wise-Seabee)
Simon Green-(Hayes-Sailor)

Good morning, all! This afternoon I am attending a graduate recital by my friend Jesse Cromer at Manhattan School of Music. Before I go, I shall work a bit on my notes for BABES, send a few emails and select something to read on the bus. I hope that while I'm there I can pick up a ticket to the school's production of DIE FLEDERMAUS. Jason Graae is appearing in the role of Frosch as a guest artist, which means I won't hear him sing the Laughing Song.

When I'm back, work on Frank Loesser's score. That's my day.

DR Michael S et al - Sean McDermott also appeared as Lt. Cable in a tour of South Pacific that was directed by Geraldine Fitzgerald.  He also played Cable in an "experimental" production of South Pacific a couple of years ago at that the Dallas Theater Center.  I remember it getting a brief write-up in "American Theatre".

*Here's an "interesting" review from The Dallas Observer (http://www.dallasobserver.com/1999-04-22/culture/the-sound-of-a-musical/).  -There's a great "comment" about Sean. In an undershirt. ;)

After I read the morning newspaper, I went out and mowed a side strip that runs along the left side of my house. This part of my yard gets the least attention because cars often part alongside this strip, and I don't notice how overgrown the grass has gotten here. There were no cars yesterday morning, and I was shocked at how overgrown it was. So, I took care of that this morning before it got too warm to do it comfortably.

Today it's back to work for me. I'll be doing EMPIRE OF PASSION, the next film that's a roundabout follow-up to IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES by the same director. Hopefully, this one won't be so graphically intense sexually. Clearly, I've never seen it before, so it'll be new to me.

I bought KISS ME STUPID sight unseen several years ago when it first came out on DVD. I never saw it when it came out in the 1960s. The cast looked good, and it was Billy Wilder! How bad could it be?  Unfortunately, I hated just about all of it. Didn't find it the least funny, and it seemed labored throughout. Just not for me.

This weekend begins the SALEM FILM FESTIVAL. I think this is the 4th year and it has turned into quite a big deal. It was previously only 3 days long, and has now expanded to 10 days.....and this year they have all the Oscar nominated animated and live action short subjects!!

Here is the line-up of movies and shorts http://www.salemfilmfestival.com/2009/films.html

As you will see many of the film makers and actors will be in attendance. Today I plan to see the Oscar winning short SMILE PINKI as well as Larry Blamire's old dark house spoof DARK AND STORMY NIGHT. My buddy Jim will be going to the latter if he makes it back from Seattle in time.

I'm back from a very enjoyable graduate recital. Jesse opened with a Beethoven piece, An die ferne Geliebte, opus 98, and closed the first half with Poulenc's cycle Chansons Gaillardes. The second half began with Gerald Finzi's Shakespeare Songs, Let Us Garlands Bring and closed with three musical theatre pieces with guest duet-ers, Wildhorn's "A Dangerous Game," Simon's "Lily's Eyes" which is moving but not nearly so well written as Bizet's Au fond du temple sant, although "Lily's Eyes" is becoming as ubiquitous as the Bizet. The closer was "Luck Be A Lady" with a seven-piece men's chorus and a nice 4-[oece combo of piano, bass, drums, and guitar, the same group that played for the Wildhorn and the Simon pieces.

The accompanist for the Poulenc, Finzi and Beethoven was Kenneth Merrill, who was quite wonderful. The pops accompanist was Cyrus von Hochstetter, who needs to learn how to do an unarpeggiated button. "Lily's Eyes" had a very sloppy close. Jesse sounded really great, and I think it was an overall success.

I really can't stand any of the young people in the cast (many are very poor actors and others just have annoying characters). The "boo" moments are cheesy and irritating, and the two murders that took place in this week's show were repulsive.

This is 40 minutes of my life I can find a better way to spend.

Me, too.  Since I'm at home with nothing else to do, that's what I'll be doing...when I eventually do it. ;)

Yay! I got mine done and folded. Will be put away later.

I started watching another NCIS episode from the second season set, but I ran out of time and only got halfway through with it. Tony is working undercover trying to get a convict to take him to his partner so the feds can arrest them both. Good episode with some funny moments thus far. Michael Weatherly looked very sexy as a grime-covered escaped con.

I spent the majority of my time with today's work project EMPIRE OF PASSION on Criterion. It's a POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE scenario set in 1895 Japan with a ghost story angle added to it. Some effective moments, and some breathtaking shots of the four seasons in Japan, but I'm guessing that Nagisa Oshima just isn't a director whose style is up my alley. I felt distant and impatient with the characters in both IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES and EMPIRE OF PASSION, though, thankfully, the "Passion" of the title was much less graphically portrayed in this one.

I was able to watch all of the bonus features, too. Two different sets of interviews first with the two stars of the movie (filmed last year) and then some production assistants filmed in 2003. There was a video essay comparing the two Oshima movies Criterion has just issued. And there was the American trailer for the film.

Sunday afternoon greetings!  Richard and I got in from the Glee Club concert last night to find Rob and Mary Linda here.  They'd been to Dayton for the day and decided to crash here.  This morning we were all off to Cincinnati for church, where Rob, ML, and I had the pastor's 3 granddaughters to look after.  They usually sit with their grandma, but she's in California visiting her elderly father.  The 2-year-old conked out on my lap during the sermon and slept until I stood up long after the postlude ended.

We were surprised on such a beautiful day the town wasn't packed with people & parking was easy.

Our stuff was delivered today.

A lamp, which my wife hates, got broken by the mover.

Also, my revolver is missing.  We spent a couple of hours opening boxes and looking for it.

According to the driver, if it doesn't show up, it will become a "police matter".

We've decided to stay in the hotel an extra day, because there is no room for people yet in our house...just boxes.

Doesn't that sound like things were just before we moved?

Good evening!  I woke up this morning and the rain was gone, so...today was window well day.  there is a window well on the west side of my house that's over 8 feet long. The previous owners had two boards over it and the windows in the basement were blocked off with foam and curtains.  I decided it was time to fix that.  I have two other window wells on the east side of the house that needed some work too, so...

I took the wood off the window well on the west side of the house, got out the shovel and dug down a few inches below the window and then put rock  in the wells to just below the windows for drainage - I did the same thing to the other wells. (10 bags of rock - this was an upper body work out day)

Then I decided i wanted window well covers, but they don't make them in the sizes I need and the last time I special ordered smaller ones, it was well over $100 each. So, I bought a few sheets of plexiglass and cut it to fit.  I was able to fit it in the gap between the bricks over the window well so there is enough slope for the rain to run off and then I held them in place with metal stakes.  It worked and the total cost for all three window wells was less than $100.    I was also able to dump the dirt I dug out of the wells in two holes where trees were take out last year.

The big basement room now has natural light. What a treat!  The view is the inside of the window well, so I bought some rice paper window film and will put that on the window so that light can come in but the view isn't so ugly.  The cats won't be pleased, but they'll get over it.

The bad news is, I now want to prime and paint the paneling in that room - then I'll need to carpet or tile that room....

DR DRUXY, if your revolver doesn't show up, be sure to file a police report that it's stolen or missing.  Who knows what it could be used for and if it's something bad and they run a trace, it will come up with your name.

I plan to call the moving company in the morning.

Did you have it locked?  Would the movers know what it was?  Many items simply disappeared during moves.  It is very distressing & difficult to prove.  I hope you find it.  If not, The fact the police will be involved should make a difference.

You give it to the driver...and he seals it in a box.

He had 3 helpers when they loaded in Los Angeles.  Hmmm....

Then you have a signed receipt for it.  You are off the hook anyway.  The driver must be very, very unhappy about this.

He is.

Good Evening!

Well... I have four more performances left of The Producers and just seven more days left here in Charleston.  Le sigh.

*I am ready to head back home to NYC.  I'm just trying to figure out what non-show-related activities I want to do this week.  Some day trips to either Savannah and/or Columbia would be nice, but I'm not sure I want to spend that much time in a car (four hours round trip to either city).  We shall see.

DR druxy - Did the movers put your revolver in a special box? Could you have transported it yourself to Austin? -That just seems like such a risky thing for someone to take from a sealed moving box.  I hope all the workers are registered and accounted for.

Sounds like a great program.  The Beethoven was one of the pieces I learned to play and sing when I was in college.  -And it's been ages since I've heard the "Chansons Gaillardes".

-And I'm finding it very interesting that a lot of MSM and Juilliard vocal recitals seem to include a musical theatre selection or two. Although, I probably would have steered clear of programming "A Dangerous Game". ::)

Well, it's official!  I've been cast as Lord Montague in Theater Artists Olympia's production of "Romeo and Juliet." :D A few days ago, I downloaded several versions of the play and in the shortest with only 35 pages, Lord Montague had only three lines.  I found another cut of the show with 75 pages(!) and LM has many more lines.  I'm hoping for fewer lines. ::)

Finished watching a motion picture - we're issuing the soundtrack in a few weeks.  I really have never liked the album presentation and now it's quite clear why - it's horribly edited, with cues edited onto other cues in a senseless way.  I took lots of notes and I now have to decide if I really want to take the time to have my mastering guy undo the edits (easy) and try to place things in film order (not so easy - there's a LOT of identifying to do and it will also render several cues very short, which they are in the film.  That's not a big deal to me, as I'll have tight spaces between cues, but it's the sheer intricacy of it that I may not be able to deal with.  Minimally I will do some of it - unfortunately, there are several cues in the film that aren't on the album at all, and that includes, I think, the end cue, although I'll have to go back now and see if it's edited onto another piece, which it may be.  And the album track titles bear little relation to the film, so I'm definitely going to re-title everything.

But I think I came up with a fun idea about all this, which is to do this "new" version of the old album and then to include the entire old album sequence after the new version - that way, you get both and the CD is suddenly seventy minutes instead of thirty-five. :)

My friend, Fernando, and his girlfriend made it safely into Charleston earlier today.  He had told me he was driving a "truck" up from Florida, but I didn't realize it was a moving truck.  His girlfriend is making the big move up to The City.  So, it took them a little while to find a parking lot where (A) they could fit and (b) would allow them to park there.

We ended up having a wonderful Low Country brunch at Poogan's Porch (http://www.poogansporch.com/).  Poogan's Porch is a restaurant that was set up in a restored Victorian House, and it's named after a neighborhood dog that "adopted" the house.  :)

After brunch, we walked around Charleston for a while to walk off the delicious biscuits from Poogan's. ;)  We stopped into a few stores that used to be other "things": a bank, a jewelry store, a movie theatre, etc.  Since Fernando is a Mac Genius at the Fifth Avenue Apple Store, we stopped into the Charleston Apple Store so that he could say "Hi" to his "colleagues". I introduced him to some of the associated that have been assisting me while I've been down here, and they all had some great questions about the workings of the Fifth Avenue Store.  Some of them also knew one of his managers since she was a regional rep for a while.

*And since the Charleston store and the Fifth Avenue store are in the same sales region, the staff from each store is able to check on each other's sales figures.  I learned today that during the last "Black Friday" - the day after Thanksgiving - the Fifth Avenue store had already done about $1 million dollars worth of business.  By 9:00AM(!!!).

Fernando and his girlfriend were not able to stay for the show - which was OK - since they had to get back on the road to continue the trek up north. It turns out that they were planning on stopping in Richmond tonight, well... I was able to give them a few hints on where to stay and where to eat. ;)

*And it really was nice seeing them.  They were in Savannah last night, and the trip to Charleston was truly a detour for them, most of it along Route 17 where the average speed is 45MPH. I very much appreciated their time and company today.

Listening to To the London Cast Album of Sunday In the Park With George. I like how they use different accents among the characters. Especially  between Dot and George is act one.

Then it is onto the first complete recording of Allegro.

Some very unusual artists on this album, John Simon, Bernard Bersten, Howard Kissel, Schuyler Chaplin (Ted's Father) Stephen Sondheim, and OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II

Great cast including BK Regulars: Judy Kuhn, Liz Callaway, Judith Blazer, Danny Burstein. Laura Bennati
and Audra McDonald, Nathan Gunn, Marni Nixon, Patrick Wilson, Norbert Leo Butz and a couple of blasts from the past: Kurt Peterson and Harvey Evans

I always thought it was rather brave for Daniel Evans to wear a hairpiece for George in Act One and doffing it for Act 2's George.

This reminds me of Ron Raines who for the revival of Show Boat in the early 80's did the same. He wore a hair piece for most the show and took it off for the final sequence. If memory serves a critic made note of this. I think I still have the program and there are photos of him both ways.

He liked going "au naturel" for the second act. It cut down on his post-show "getting out of make-up and costume" time tremendously.  -And he more or less had to wear the hairpiece for Act 1 anyway since he was portraying Seurat.

DR Ginny - A "Profile" on Twitter is just the listing of your - or someone else's - "tweets".  You should be able to see all of your "tweets" on your Profile - and when you click on my icon, you would be bringing up my Profile (a.k.a. Timeline).  You can also click on another persons Favorites - they're favorite tweets, which are "favored" by clicking on the star (at least in the web version).

However, Twitter has been acting up the past few days, so if you are clicking on your Profile, but then mine is coming up, well... That's not supposed to happen. ;)

The ultimate feminist statement.

I should probably have a light dinner, rather than skip it altogether. I'm not really hungry.

Jose, didn't you once mention a good falafel eatery in LA? I haven't had a falafel since I left Virginia. I'm also eager for a Campos avocado burrito. I may have to take care of that this week.

Alas, Eat-A-Pita on Fairfax closed a while back.  However, there's still Amir's on Ventura in Studio City, and there's also Amer's too a few blocks away.  A friend of mine just tried Falafel-Arax on Santa Monica in Hollywood, and really liked it. It's Armenian style, good schwarma there too, apparently.  *It's on my list for my next trip out there. ;)

DR MattH thanks for letting us know that IN PLAIN SIGHT starts tonight. i'm really hoping that we will get season 2 here. I really liked season 1.

I am very much looking to TAR tonight. The preview fights looked interesting.

Btw, anybody else who watches SURVIVOR as annoyed as i was with what happened on thursday's vote out???

Glad I could be of help. All of us with our busy lives sometimes just let these premieres slip up on us, so I'm happy when the little reminders come in handy for folks.

Can that boy eat?  Here's what I had: Two count them two poached eggs on an English muffin.  A short stack, of which I ate half.  And one bite of hashed browns - darling Jeanne ate most of those.

Had some wonderful viewing experiences tonight.

I began by finishing the NCIS episode that I had started earlier in the day but had only gotten halfway through. It had a very definite gay subtext to the situation between Tony and the ex-con, and was actually one of the best performances I've seen Michael Weatherly give on the show. Very enjoyable.

Next I watched MILK. It's a wonderful movie. I teared up on three separate occasions while I was watching it. Very excellent film.

I also watched one of the bonus features with some of the still living people portrayed in the movie talking about Harvey Milk and his brief time in the spotlight.

And I forgot to mention that the Blu-ray looked very nice. Some interesting directionalized dialog effects on the DTS-HD MA audio track.

I still had some time before I wanted to start watching DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, so I put on disc 2 of DANTE'S COVE and watched most of the next episode. I didn't quite get finished with it before I needed to start prime time TV, but I'll finish it tomorrow.

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES had an Edie Britt-centric episode tonight in honor of the actress leaving the series. I very much enjoyed all the stories of Edie's encounters with the ladies we had never seen before. Gave a nice rounded picture of the lady that I quite enjoyed.

BROTHERS & SISTERS had a sex/romance themed-episode tonight. Great to see Jason Lewis back for a brief two scene bit as Chad. That first encounter with Kevin got a couple of replays on the DVR.

As I've been sitting here the past hour, I've been getting sleepier and sleepier.  -OH! That's right. I opened a show this past week!  I guess I'm supposed to be tired. So...

Goodnight.

Last night I watched again a DVD that DR MBARNUM sent me a few years (!) ago.  A Japanese film that I recommend to everyone.....I think MR BK himself would find it amusing and entertaining.

It is called Welcome Back, Mr McDonald......about a young woman who writes a script for a radio drama and the happenings on the day it is to be produced.  Very very funny.....

I am glad you liked it DR JRand! Yes, BK would likely enjoy that film very much. And I am certain he could identify with the plot, from personal experience!!

DR DRUXY, if your revolver doesn't show up, be sure to file a police report that it's stolen or missing.  Who knows what it could be used for and if it's something bad and they run a trace, it will come up with your name.

And to be on the safe side, keep the number of Perry Mason handy!

I have returned from seeing Larry Blamire's new film DARK AND STORMY NIGHT. It was hilarious!

Two of the cast members were in attendance, Trish Geiger and Dan Conroy.

I'm full and I'm lazy.  I had a nice meeting with Alet Taylor - I had a BLTA and small fries.  And I'm still full and tomorrow I must stop eating these bigger meals because even though I haven't gained any weight, it really makes me feel uncomfortable.

Today, I did four loads of laundry.  Otherwise, I just watched an episode of the British TV show, "Spaced" with Simon Pegg.  It's quite funny.  I finished it in time to watch tonight's "Desperate Housewives" and now I'm watching "Brothers & Sisters."  There is a lot of man eye-candy on this episode. ;)

It's supposed to be 100 degrees in the valley Monday and Tuesday.  I do not do well in the heat.

Dear Jane,     Early in our camping years, when the kid was maybe 4, at Big Bear, she was eating when a wolf decided to venture within a few feet of her.  Of course being a kid she was ready to feed the dogie.  Her dad could not leave to get the gun, so having it really did not do any good.  Luckily she still listened and did what she was told, did not move, and her dad (as we always said had the look of - you really don't want to mess with me) and the wolf left, probably because it was alone.

Other than that camping was still really safe and fun.  Today I don't know anymore.  Things have changed, the parks are constantly being closed for the summer because the squirrels have something, or the water has something, or fire hazard, etc., etc.  I hear it's pretty hard to even get camping spot reservations.
