Peckinpah is notorious for saying all his films were ruined in one way or another - that was his thing. With Ride the High Country he claimed he wasn't allowed to edit it, and also that the score was terrible. Well, it's well-edited and I'm rather fond of the score, and the film is one of his best. He originally told Jerry Fielding that he thought his score to The Wild Bunch had ruined the film. He later recanted, when he realized how stupid he was being. According to Nick, even with the put back scenes, even with the new score, Major Dundee is still problematic. It's better, but that doesn't suddenly make it a great film.
