I loved, loved, loved this weeks episode of CASTLE. That Nathan Fillion was certainly underused when he was on DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, he is really a fine actor, and so funny.

I read about Andy Hallett's passing this afternoon. Only 33! And so handsome out of that makeup, too.

You non parents can skip this post as it will no doubt fall under your TMI aegis.

You parents may get some hilarity out of knowing that DS Gabe managed to clog our downstairs toilet so thoroughly that even after 3 hours of plunging and pouring various caustic liquids down it, it's barely running again.  Betsy is making some high fiber foods at this moment to hopefully "soften" any future impact.  :)

The rain just started back up here in Charleston.  It's not supposed to stop until Friday.  :-\

Had a busy evening of viewing.

I began with THE SERGEANT, the next in the Warner Archive collection that I bought. Again, there are age-related specks and the reel markers are still there, but otherwise, it looked as I remembered it looking, and the color was mostly quite strong. Yes, there was some interlaced shimmer, but only a tiny bit. For the most part, I was very pleased with the disc.

I went to ABC.com and tried to watch it on-line. The site said I needed a flash player. I thought I had a flash player. It sent me to the Adobe site to upload a free version. I uploaded it. I tried to play the show. It STILL said I needed a flash player. So, the site and my computer are just not communicating.

Next, I put in THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT on Blu-ray because I wanted to watch the AMERICAN IN PARIS excerpts with Dolby True HD sound. It made ALL the difference in the world compared to the Dolby DIgital 1.0 that's on the new Blu-ray of the movie.

True, the visuals are better on the new disc; THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT used an older transfer of the film, and then for part of the excerpt, the telecine operator zooms in to fill the screen so resolution is definitely lost there. But the sound is so much fuller on TE than it is on the new Blu-ray. The difference in sound between the two is heartbreaking for me.

Next, I watched tonight's NCIS. Once we had the suspects, I easily guessed the guilty party. But it was still a fun episode. Loved Ziva's solo handling of the two intruders.

I loved tonight's THE MENTALIST. I was completely fooled, and the climax was kind of heartstopping.

Matt, that happened to me a long time ago, too, and I discovered it worked after a reboot.

Then I watched tonight's AMERICAN IDOL.

With the first two singers being bad and THE WORST OF THE SEASON (that's Anoop and Megan), the rest of them sang anywhere from OK to great. But I was ready to turn the show off forever after those two terrible opening songs.

The best four of the night for me: Danny (who had coasted the last two weeks but really did well tonight), Allison, Scott, and Adam. Lil hollered her entire song and I thought Kris was pleasant but overrated by the judges.

I will be shocked if the bottom three aren't Anoop, Megan, and Matt with Megan leaving.

Thanks. I did consider doing that, but I haven't yet. I'll shut the computer down tonight and try it again tomorrow.

Watched one Warner Archive title and am now watching another, although I may be through viewing for the evening, as I'm going to write the notes and then listen to some soothing music.

DR JMK - Are you sure he didn't just use too much toilet paper?  -And if you happen to be using CostCo's inhouse brand of toilet paper, it's been infamous(?) for causing clogged drains.

*Otherwise, just get those chewable fiber tablets.  My nephew thinks they taste like candy. ;)

No, he had used no toilet paper yet.  We finally (three hours later) have it unclogged.  He will be eating a lot of Betsy's yummy bran muffins on a daily basis.  :)

Can't remember if anyone else posted about this, but the Criterion BD of Kurosawa's RAN has been shelved due to a "rights issue."  The 2 disc SE SD-DVD is out of print, but you can still probably find it online.

i got the invitation to my 30th Class reunion today.  It's in August during Sweet Corn Days.  We're riding on a float in the Sweet Corn Parade, lol. We'll have dinner at the Country Club then head to town for the street dance.   I went with a friend to his reunion a few years ago and they did the same thing. it was a lot of fun

Here's a link from last year  http://www.estherville.org/sweet_corn_days.htm

The news broke yesterday, but just in case...

Salmonella in Pistachios Spurs Recall

"Barely two months after a huge recall of peanut-related products, federal officials said late Monday that a California processor would recall about one million pounds of pistachio products because of concerns about salmonella contamination.

The company, Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, based in Terra Bella, Calif., decided to recall its 2008 crop after one of its customers, Kraft Foods, found several types of salmonella during routine analysis of the product. Kraft Foods alerted the Food and Drug Administration of its findings on March 24."

I got Season Six of HAWAII FIVE-O in the mail for review purposes. Tomorrow, however, I'll be working on the new Collector's Blu-ray edition of NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN. It's two discs, and I'll be comparing last year's one disc Blu-ray release with this new one. I'd be shocked if they did a new transfer (I'm sure they didn't) though the sound on the new one is DTS-HD MA while the original Blu-ray had an uncompressed PCM track. Again, I doubt there will be any difference to the sound.

Luckily, I have two Blu-ray players hooked up to my TV so doing A/B/ comparison between these two Blu-rays won't be hard.
