As promised, here is the new Kritzerland release - and I cannot tell you how great this score is.  You know the drill - it's 19.98 plus 3.75 shipping via paypal to kritzerland at adelphia dot net.

“O GOD THAT MADE THIS BEAUTIFUL EARTH, WHEN WILL IT BE READY TO RECEIVE THY SAINTS? HOW LONG, O LORD, HOW LONG?"

Kritzerland is proud to present a new limited edition soundtrack CD:

SAINT JOAN

Music Composed and Conducted by Mischa Spoliansky

Joan of Arc has served as inspiration to many filmmakers and actresses over the years – from Carl Theodore Dryer’s The Trial of Joan of Arc (starring Falconetti), to Joan of Arc (starring Ingrid Bergman), to Luc Besson’s The Messenger (starring Milla Jovovich), with many stops in between, the story of the girl who heard voices has been told in many different ways.  Each approach – in style, storytelling and performance – was completely different.

Otto Preminger’s 1957 film of George Bernard Shaw’s play Saint Joan is probably his most maligned film (even more so than Skidoo) – the critical reaction was downbeat and downright nasty, and the film was a huge box-office disaster.  Part of the reason for this is because he chose to go with a very young and completely unknown actress as Joan – the beautiful seventeen-year-old Jean Seberg.  For critics and audiences she was not up to the demands of the role, especially in the company of such superb players as Richard Widmark, John Gielgud, Richard Todd, Kenneth Haigh, Harry Andrews, and Anton Walbrook.  The film came and went quickly, and, over the years, has either been completely forgotten or counted as one of the director’s lesser films by all but a handful of people.   The director himself said he realized that his film was a failure.  Jean Seberg said, “I have two memories of Saint Joan.  The first was being burned at the stake in the picture.  The second was being burned at the stake by the critics.  The latter hurt more.  I was scared like a rabbit and it showed on the screen.  It was not a good experience at all.  I started where most actresses end up.”

But time is the great leveler and occasionally time is kind to certain films.  Watching Saint Joan today, away from all the hullabaloo and critical brickbats, one finds a compelling film (with a screenplay by Graham Greene), beautifully acted and with, surprise of surprises, an incandescent performance by Jean Seberg.

For Saint Joan, Preminger hired Mischa Spoliansky, not exactly a film composer whose name was known to the public, even though he’d provided great scores for numerous films by then, including the scores for many high-profile films like The Private Life of Don Juan, Sanders of the River (starring Paul Robeson, and for which Spoliansky composed several songs), The Man Who Could Work Miracles, King Solomon’s Mines, Wanted for Murder, The Happiest Days of Our Lives, and many others.  Spoliansky’s main theme for the film is astonishingly beautiful and evocative, and his dramatic scoring accompanies Preminger’s stately visuals masterfully.  Every cue in the film helps underscore the characters’ many and varied emotions.

For this first ever CD release of Saint Joan, we used the original album masters housed in the Capitol/EMI vaults.   The score was recorded and released in mono.   For an LP presentation back then, it was quite long – over 38 minutes, and the album contained all of Spoliansky’s score.  On the LP, cues were combined, and rather artfully so, so we’ve left our CD in the exact album configuration.  The cover art is by the brilliant Saul Bass.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98 plus shipping

CD will ship by the second week of September – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).   To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

I finished watching the first season of MAD MEN last night.

The final two episodes got a bit more interesting that the earlier ones, but the story is still moving too slowly for my taste.

I'm pondering whether to watch Seasons 2 & 3, or just put all three sets up for sale on e-bay.

BK, you shouldn't let people aggravate you so much!

re: the paypal dispute

Obviously the guy was nuts to place the dispute before hearing back from you.  And obviously he did not read the fine print carefully (to see the cd was not supposed to ship till september). But after he did dispute it, I actually wouldn't have blamed him for waiting the 2 days till the cd arrived. Unless he's allowed to dispute the charge again if he doesn't get it for some reason.

Good morning, all! I slept much later than intended, all because of the damned Oaf Above Me, who decided around 12:30 am to move quickly and aggressively about the apartment, infolding his bed (it's either that or cartons of drugs and ammunition he's dragging across the floor), getting the chickmobile ready for action. When he'd finished redecorating or whatever, he left and I went to sleep. At some time after 4 am, he and the young lady showed up and woke me, so I had a noisy period of time while eight feet (2 humans, one dog) moved about the apartment in heavy shoes. Don't the fools ever sit? Bits of their conversation filtered through the bathroom and kitchen air vents, none of it worth listening to. Shortly thereafter, the door closed and I thought, I guess he's walking her home, to the bus stop, to a subway, but soon after that thought, the footsteps began and I realized he was out walking the dog and SHE was walking about the apartment. He soon returned at 4:49 - I checked the clock - and the sex began, so I turned on the tv, to a rather loud volume, and surfed through HBO, Cinemax and Showtime stations, watching bits of things. Around 5:15-5:30, I turned off the tv and slept fitfully. Because of that fool, i lost two hours of working time this morning and I am not happy. Not happy at all.

So, now I'm wondering if he may not be dealing drugs at clubs between midnight and four am or if he's waiting for his lady friend - I don't even know if it's the same young lady visiting each time! - to leave work or hanging out at bars waiting for last call to pick up whomever. I personally hope he's trafficking in drugs and arms so I can have him deported or imprisoned.

BK, it sounds as if you're going through the mental aggravation I was going through for the past two weeks. You should talk to DR MBarnum; he talked me out of mine. I still don't know how.

So, today I may see a movie, but I have much work on the Herbert projects as well as completing the Indianapolis Symphony job. I'll photocopy it tomorrow and get it to the copyist on Tuesday.

I'm in Annapolis!

I took the train to DC on Friday. After an extended stop (45 minutes) in the Philadelphia train station (we had some technical isses and as we were pulling out the conductor said "We will be leaving very shortly. we addressed most of the problems and feel we can proceed. The person in the seat next to me said "At least we're not on a plane!) I got into Union Station at about 8:45 (an hour and 15 minutes late). But that was OK because my friend had a work emergency and instead of me going to her apartment she was going to meet me at the station. She arrived at 9pm. We had some light dinner and then we went to her place. We talked for a bit and then went to bed.

I got some flowers for Anthony and we left for Annapolis about 11:30. Without traffic it's a quick drive. Most of the time there was very little traffic but once we got on the road to the theatre we hit heavy beach traffic. The show began at 2pm. We arrived at the theatre at 1:50! Luckily we made it on time. The director was in the lobby and I told her Anthony didn't know I was here and that I was planning on surprising him. She was very happy and excited. I sat with her during the show. Anthony came into the theatre just before curtain looking for our DC friends and didn't see them. He did, however, see the director and me but he didn't know who I was. It was dark enough that he didn't recognize me. He told me later he didn't know who was sitting with TinaMarie!

The show went very well and we went outside for the "reveal" There are chairs in the lobby so I sat down and my friends stood in front of me waiting for Anthony. Another friend of ours from Roanoke, VA was there as well. He didn't know I would be there and we told him about the surprise so he joined the line to hide me from view. Anthony came out and made his way through the people, chatting with everyone and having a good time. He came to Karen and Danny (DC and VA) and said how happy he was to see them, etc., etc. and then they said "We have a surprise for you." They stood apart (there were actually 4 people from DC) and I walked through, gave him flowers, said Happy Anniversary and watched him almost fall over. It was a complete surprise. I'm very happy it all came off without a hitch. He teared up and everyone applauded. Everyone in the cast gushed over the romance and it made me feel very good. After a week of yuk at work I made up for it in a minute by coming down here for a surprise.

Spontenaity is good and it clears the mind! I recommend it.

There is a party late this afternoon after the closing of the show. We will attend and then we will have High Tea early tomorrow at

Reynolds Tavern (http://www.reynoldstavern.org/tea.html)

We will then drive back to New York and being living the rest of the summer.

All in all, it's been a loverly weekend.

What a Fantastick story, DR Ben! Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Since I am now unemployed, I thought I would catch up on the pro bono projects sitting on my shelf. The first thing was bk's TWO'S COMPANY benefit. When I got these tapes, there was no note or anything attached so I thought they were the master tapes. bk had said the camera work was bumpy at times and he just wanted to use the 2 angles to smooth out the performance but if I didn't have time to do it, it wasn't a big deal. I haven't had more than a day or two off at a time until now, and no drive space, so I was glad to finally tackle it. I didn't mention that I was starting this because I thought it would be more fun just to send a DVD in the mail as a surprise.

The surprise was on me, though. I got the program information from the notes, after editing about 25 minutes of the show, I didn't know where one of the songs came from, so I went searching for information and found most of these songs from the show on youtube already edited!  Duh....

That must have happened was when I was finishing the Mercer cluster-film and starting the Baseball film, and I was off HHW for awhile and totally missed this. So it was fun to watch the performances while I was loading and the person who cut the youtube clips did a very nice job. And it's always fun to compare how different editors cut the same footage!

Guess I'll send those tapes back and start on the next one on the shelf. (Which won't be nearly as fun!)

Cilla I know how it feels to be left out of family activities.  My sister did it to me even when she knew I would be in town.

My step sister didn't invite me to either of her weddings, or the anniversary party she threw for her mom and my dad, so I can also relate!

Sunday afternoon greetings from HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dr. Jain (as opposed to DR Jane), woke me up at 10:50pm last night to say he'd be back this morning, probably to release me.  He was wearing scrubs, so must have gotten involved in something pretty complicated during the day yesterday.  He arrived a little after 9am and Richard and I were on the way home by 11:30.  We dropped 4 new prescriptions off at the pharmacy and came home to have lunch just as Rob and Mary Linda were finishing their breakfast.  We're now all just relaxing before ML starts her trip back to MI.

Edi your father must have been hurt by that. :(

Enjoy your unemployment and vibes it doesn't last long!!

They probably told him that I was "too busy", and he would believe whatever they say so I'm sure it didn't bother him.

I am kind of enjoying unemployment but am wondering if I'll ever work at Turner again. They are converting all the AVID rooms (my editing system) to Final Cut, which is a tough transition and not a good system for long-form projects, so I'm not anxious to get up to speed right now just to abandon it when I start the next film in late fall. I may just try to use my time off constructively.

I have done things like go to the dentist, had my first physical (all cholesterol #s are in a good range and the electrode hooky up thing said everything looked good. I've been getting lots of exercise, walking 10-15 miles a week, eating very healthily and have lost 11 lbs in the past 2 months, so I'm hoping I'm establishing good habits that will last when I get busy and stressout out again.

And now I can tackle my taxes!

Now, if I order this CD today, can you make sure that it is mailed no later than tomorrow?

Speaking of food. What's on the menu?

We were planning on dining out until until both of us needing new specks emptied the bank account, so: last night I retrieved a nice 5 lb  long island ducking from its freezer resting place.  I suspect he will be glazed with a hot-pepper jelly or an orange marmalade and pan roasted; if Woody is feeling the need to vent some hostility, the duck might get spatchcocked.

We have some fresh Brussels Sprouts from the farmer's market which will be lightly sauteed and dressed with balsamic and maybe some fresh grated Parmesan.

I suspect wild rice or one of its relatives will made an appearance.

For dessert I'll probably dish up some 1/2 fat Vanilla Ice Cream, slice up some fresh picked white peaches and maybe give it a celebratory splash of Grand Marnier..

To drink, probably a Beldian Lambic Ale -  Lindeman's Kriek (sour cherry) or Cassis (currant).

Jennifer - I asked him to close the dispute and told him it was bad form to have opened it - I also assured him that we have great customer service and that if, for some reason, his CD doesn't arrive, that we would send out a replacement immediately.

I agree that it was bad form for him to have opened it. But since he already did ...

Well glad it worked out okay for you. Although you still had to deal with the frustration.

I told my niece that I would go biking with her today. It's the first time we've biked together. Because we don't have our bikes at the same place.  So i biked the 30minutes to her house. ANd she was in heaven. She loved it. So it was worth it. Plus it wasn't much exercise biking with her. So it was okay that it took me 30 minutes each way with her.

You are enjoying unemployment more than I expected you too :)

I guess I'm glad your father wasn't as hurt as you were.

This brought a huge smiel to my face!!!  The Vixter sends her love!!

A bunch of Long Island Lutherans prayed for your speedy recovery and homecoming today at 9 AM EST - glad to see they teh prayers so quickly answered!!!

DR Edi will there be any more showings of JEWS AND BASEBALL in Israel?  A friend was out of the country & missed it.  She wants to see it.  She grew up in the States.  We were good friends in elementary school until she moved away to Palm Springs in 5th grade.  Back then that seemed far away and I didn't see her again for about 40 years.  We had an amazing reunion.

Yes, DR Vixmom, you have to find the things to laugh about in these crisis situations or they'll consume you.  I'm sure you had your moments, too.  When I called Genevieve, the girl who took my job at the library when I retired and was presiding over the meeting at which this happened, she said, "You don't even sound upset."  I explained to her that I didn't think that would help and I truly believe in the healing powers of a positive attitude.

And thanks for the prayers!

Well, DR Cillaliz, as Dr. Jain (not DR Jane) promised me, I'm very tired.  We're about to eat a veggie pizza for dinner, after which I will take a shower and get ready for bed.  The longest stretch of sleep I had in the hospital was 4.5 hours on Thursday night, so I'm feeling somewhat sleep-deprived.  And, I'm a little shaky - something we found out when I tried to take photos of the flowers I'd received.  Rob had to re-take them for me.    Also, I have spectacular bruising from the caths, the IVs, and all the blood tests.  Not painful, except when the nurses and docs pressed on them to check for hematoma, but enough to keep me away from my mother for a while.  She's cried enough this week.

DR Ginny.  Do you mind my asking what your symptoms were?  It must have been very scary at the time.

DR Jane - first my face hurt, like when you have a sinus infection, but it came on suddenly.  Almost instantly after that, I began to feel the pressure in the middle of my chest, a GERD-like knot at the base of my throat, and a threadiness to my voice.  When I looked back to the weekend and Monday, I'd had hot flashes (and I'm wa-a-a-ay beyond those...) that I'd blamed on that steroid shot I'd had the previous Friday.

I created a Facebook "event" for the Gardenia show - can someone please let me know that it's showing up - also, I put in the special logo we had done, but on my screen it's showing up as a negative image - it should have white lettering and for me the lettering is black - for the designer, it's showing up white.  Weird.

The logo shows up black for me... I can faintly read the text.

Well, not every morning, but definitely more often than before.  Yes, DR Laura, they'd done a CAT scan of my chest to rule out blood clots before they took me into the cath lab.  The blockage was the famous plaque that you hear about on TV and I'm taking Plavix, so I expect to start seeing that gurney following me around town any day now.

All the Mexican places around my neighborhood have vanished, so Chris and I went wandering over on 72nd and Columbus for a place for dinner. We ended up at a Mexican place at 77th called Cafe Frida. He had a chicken taco that was out of this world, and I had so-so enchiladas. What was spectacular was the guacamole and a peculiar hibiscus margarita with pomegranate juice.

I'm about ready for bed. We'll see what crap the Oaf pulls tonight, if any.

After Richard retired, people would ask him how he knew it was time.  His reply was, "You'll just know."  I knew this was not like anything I'd ever experienced before and "just knew."  I thought maybe a clot had traveled to my heart or lungs, since that's something I'd been warned to watch for.  One of the ways people make a bad situation worse is to have someone drive them to the ER (or, egads, drive themselves) instead of calling 9-1-1.  I knew from some community training I'd had long ago and from our paramedic student son that there's a lot they can do for a patient in the squad and can have the ER supplied with some preliminary info about your condition when you arrive.  And since I was going to a hospital in the same network as our local one, even my insurance info, emergency contact info, and all that were already filled out.

You hair has to have been better than mine was.  You were dressed for a meeting, I was grubby from hiking & planning on washing my hair when I returned home.  Five days later I still couldn't take a shower.  I think it was on the 7th or 8th day I was permitted, with assistance of course. Be grateful for the little things ;)

How very convenient the hospitals were affiliated!

I appreciate the details & am grateful your symptoms were loud & clear, combined with the knowledge to call an ambulance instead of hitching a ride.

After lying on the ground for a long time I began to wonder the wisdom of not calling for an ambulance.  I was pleased to know I made the right choice, money wise anyway.  Injury wise it didn't matter.

Oatmeal:
I put one cup of milk and a quarter cup of steel-cut oats in a container to soak overnight. In the morning, I just cook it until the milk reduces, as the soaking makes the oats much faster to cook. While it cooks I chop up some fruit (my favorite is peach) and a handful of walnuts and a bit of brown sugar. It makes a tasty breakfast that contains the oatmeal, a serving of milk, and a serving of fruit.

It is not always easy to eat oatmeal in Phoenix in August, but if it prevents a heart attack, I do it.

We had a bad storm tonight. I had quite a few limbs down. I cleaned up for about an hour and a half. Lots more to do in the morning. No cable no internet. Think I'll go to bed.

I was just pulling up accuweather radar to see if we are going to get anything and I saw the big red storm cell over Iowa. I hope everything is ok.

In my case, each angina attack had one added "feature" - a sense of dread (forboding?). My body seemed to sense that this was not indigestion, or a gall stone acting up but was an 'event' with which to deal. (With which I foolishly did NOT deal, but waited for my scheduled doctors appointment.)  Of course then angina attacks did not last long, and recovery was rapid.

I loved Patricia Neal, as is probably obvious to anyone who's read my latest book.

Back from Young Frankenstein and would seriously like to throttle the sound designer and operator - theater, in case you didn't know, is theater - not a friggin' rock concert.  It ruins the show, which, because of the sound, seems relentless and trying much too hard for its laughs.  Whoever allowed such a sound design should re-think what they're doing for a living, and I would have to believe that is the director.  The show has many other problems, as well, but the movie jokes are still amusing, save for every single one of Madeline Kahn's jokes, none of which work because the actress (who I'm assuming has been told to do exactly what Megan Mullally did on B'way) is completely unfunny.  That is not her fault.  Maybe if they let her not imitate the former person she'd be better, but whoever thought what Miss Mullally was doing was amusing should think again.  What Miss Kahn did was amusing - truly.  Shuler Hensley was terrific as the Monster.  And Brad was excellent in his two roles.  He, I think, forgot to put me on the backstage list (not much of a list I have to say - three people) and I was asked to just stand there until he came out - I don't just stand there, so I left and will drop him a nice e-mail.
