DR Cillaliz - I think I posted travel times from Bethesda to Signature last night. I think. In any case...

About a 30-40 minute in "regular" traffic - Mapquest may say otherwise. About a 45-60 minute trip on the Metro coupled with a taxi ride from Pentagon City.

I watch the scene where the song is sung. It last 30 SECONDS!!!

Does anyone know if in the road show version their is a longer version?

In the clip I saw it picks up in the middle somewhere as Max Von Sydow walks down the stairs and hears Julie Andrews and abruptly ends when she sees him standing there.

If this is the only time it is sung......

How in the H-e-double hockey sticks did it get nominated?? Were there any other worthy songs that were looked over?

Good morning, all! I am up and moving about but still very sleepy. Perhaps I'll pull a DR MBarnum and lounge on the sofa all day.

Actually, today I have to talk to the copyist on the Jerome Moross project, pick up a CD from Kip Wilborn, write a bit aboutCinderella and Victor Herbert, and vacuum the apartment.

Thanks for the "dips" suggestions yesterday.

DR Jane, re: the sour cream/onion soup mix. I used to have that a lot.

Sour cream/salsa - reminds me of when the 7 layer dips layers get mixed. I think this one might be good with chips (not as sure about carrots).

Ranch dressing. I guess it would depend what kind. I'm not that fond of bottled dressings lately and have been making my own.

I guess i need to decide whether to make something i'll love vs the rest of the guests.

The competition that year was probably very weak.

The year that "A World That Never Was" got nominated, the only serious competition was Streisand's "Evergreen," which won, and "Gonna Fly Now" from ROCKY.

You're right when you say that, back in the day, the old guard in the Music Branch of the Academy often nominated their "friends," but you still had to had a good song. Webster and Fain wrote many songs over the years that were NOT nominated.

And, unless you had the #1 hit, you also had to mount a good campaign with trade ads, sending records to everybody in the Music Branch, and so forth.

The nominated songs for the last several years are so bland and forgettable that, I'll bet you'll have to go back a decade or more to find the answer.

Then again, there are the songs which won Oscars from animated films which could be considered standards:
Beauty and the Beast
Colors of the Wind
A Whole New World
When You Believe

I don't think that "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" has the legs to become a standard. That's just my humble opinion.

Good morning!

It was fairly warm last night, but I awoke to a coller morning than I expected. Still, the inside of the house felt pleasant, so I didn't open up the house. May not get to do that again until later in the week as it looks to be hot and humid for the first part of the week.

No, the roadshow version contains the same little snippet. I'm with you--I love the tune (the lyric is rather ridiculous), but how the song got nominated is beyond me, especially when the ultra-luscious "Maybe September" from "The Oscar" was a finalist that year.
