Just dozed in and out of the film ANIMAL HOUSE. I watched it over Christmas as well, maybe the first time I had seen it uncut for TV. I'm no fan of the director, but this movie is quite well made in a lot of respects. Mainly carried along by a great, committed cast with wonderful rapport, some hilarious writing. I mean, the number of things from this movie that are have become staples of popular culture is quite astounding.
Tim Matheson, you wonder why a greater career did not unfold (UP THE CREEK, notwithstanding). John Vernon, the perfect Dean Wormer. Stephen Furst, great. Peter Riegert, etc. Of course, Belushi is magnetic even in some of the more idiotic moments.
It features some of its director's typical sloppy filmmaking mixed with some real attention to detail. Could have used more plot though. Donald Sutherland's character doesn't add up to much. But all told, a fun movie with more heart than films it inspired.
