Title: THE ART OF THE ACT
Post by: bk on January 25, 2012, 12:36:55 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had some art and put on an act, and now it is time for you to post until the cabaret cows come home - they're getting their act together and taking it on the road.

Good morning, all! Back up at 6:30 after a night of dreams about working at Barnes & Noble and getting into a fight with a difficult first floor manage who's still there and a dream involving Richard Rodgers and me at a concert with Mary Martin.

Today is a repeat of yesterday primarily: Herbert recording notes and DEAREST ENEMY. I did not hear from Ron Raines yesterday, since I expeccted to, so perhaps I will today.

Thanks for the nice comments on the blog yesterday. I was flattered that Doug Reside, who handles that service of the NYPL, asked me to do it. Bruce Pomahac thinks I have a book there. We'll see.

More and more my local coffee shop is resembling a mother's meeting place. Young mothers with babies and young children congregate and sit and chat for hours on end leaving little room for everyone else. Sorry to be a curmudgeon but I don't want infants bawling into my ear when I'm trying to have a relaxing time reading the newspaper and drinking a coffee.

DR CILLA LIZ - working in theatre in a college town, DePauw in Greencastle - I have found that the theatre and music people there, students & teachers, are a great resource....and very very good at what they do.

Oftentimes they are either on their way to a fine career and enjoying life after a fine career and are happy to share what they know - more often with people in the community than students who sometimes can be apathetic or downright hostile.

Continuing DR DOUG R's post.....

Why would you bring your children to Zumba class and not let them bring a book or a DVD or something to entertain them for an hour?  They will sit for 15 minutes at the most....and then they are up and running around....   Last night we had FOUR little girls who were most irritating....but they had NOTHING to do!!!

LOL!

Norris was 33 when he played the 18 year-old leading man of BABES IN TOYLAND. He was short, about 5'6," perhaps less. He's about the same height as Mabel Barrison who played his sister. He did several silent films, including the Marion Davies WHEN KNIGHTHOOD WAS IN FLOWER, he was one of the three stars (Peggy Wood and Charles Purcell the other two) of Sigmund Romberg's MAYTIME. He died in 1929 at the age of 59. His last role on Broadway was as Merlin in Rodgers & Hart's A CONNECTICUT YANKEE.

Charles Purcell, incidentally, played the romantic lead in DEAREST ENEMY for Rodgers & Hart.

The bird was very scared, so I had to calm him for awhile. Needless to say, not much sleep was had last night. Now, I need to find out what happened. There had been a tornado warning until 5 a.m.

We had the same storm up here in Austin.  Actually, it was a "tornado watch".

About 3:30 this morning, there was a marching band on my roof, and ever member had a bass drum.

Plenty of rain and lightning!

It continued until about eight this morning.

I've never seen anything like this in my 3 years in Texas.

Have you consider taking that chapter to a lawyer in case anything in it could be considered libelous? We don't want that to happen to you.

I have been very careful in that section - VERY careful.  Only facts are stated and only from my point of view - it's very clear - that last bit that could have ever been construed in some way as anything bad was removed last night and even that was truthful and observed by many.

There's only one person in the book who comes off really badly and it's not either of the people who owned the label.  And the person who comes off really badly really deserves it and again there is little editorializing, just what happened.

Most was off the rack stuff, and the stuff I liked of that I usually bought after the shoot.  The costumes that were designed for me specifically were in the show at the Taper, Forget-Me-Not Lane and those were great 40s duds and I loved them, and all my wardrobe on Dinah and her New Best Friends, as well as any specialty costumes on Donny and Marie.

I'm sorry to hear that. I don't have any of the other volumes (they haven't shown up on the bargain table yet). And while the Romburg book is repetitive with little in the way of writing style, I'm glad I at least have some facts about the man and I do like some of the theory put forth, even if I dismiss a lot of the theorizing as bunk.

Are you sure he died in 1929? I looked him up in the IBDB and they have a credit for him for Parl Avenue 1946. Could it be another actor with the same name?

Yes. I am sure that William Norris died in 1929. I've seen his obituaries. Was my sentence unclear?

Just been watching Ken Russell’s 'Song of Summer', his TV film about Delius which I hadn't seen for many years. What a beautiful, well-crafted, moving film - far better than most of his later feature films.

Oh dear. Sorry to hear that. I always liked him. I remember him particularly from the '60s when he was much in demand in films such as The Reckoning, Inadmissible Evidence and The Bofors Gun in which he gave very strong performances.

Last night was a night from Hell.  First of all, the gusty breezes we were expecting turned into a powerful wind storm.  And although the storm was expected to end by midnight, it continued at full force until after three this morning.

In addition to the weather, I came down with what I guess is a bout of stomach flu.  Not a fun thing to have when you can't walk, let alone run to the bathroom.  I hadn't even thought that it might be the flu until I talked to my sister this morning, and she was telling me just about everybody she knows has had this stomach virus in the last week.  Terrific.

Not only do I feel like crap, but I had to cancel my appointment with the MRSA doctor.  There was just no way I could risk driving down there and sitting around the waiting room.

They didn't join in in the Zumba-ing?  That could've kept them busy and tired them out.

;)

They wouldn't let poor Rudoph
Join in any Zum-ba-ing.

There are peple I would consider better qualified for an over-all assessment, but no one knows BABES IN TOYLAND better than I!

I think I shall go watch American Idol. Did anybody else see Jim Carrey's daughter on Sunday's show? There was some stuff in the news about her not having to wait in line.  She seemed sweet and had a nice voice. But to me American Idol is not for people who already have every advantage. If she is good enough to get a record deal why can't her dad just set that up?

I had a great time at Jersey Boys earlier today. I hadn't seen the show since it opened five years ago, and I have to say that it's in really good shape. It truly is well-oiled machine - in the good sense.

After the show, I was able to catch up with Matt Bogart, who's currently playing Nick Massi. I also got to catch up with Dominic Scaglione, Jr., who's the "matinee Frankie". A few years ago, a producer asked me to help Dominic out with some coachings. Nice to know he's doing well. :)
