I'll say one thing about these Sibelius symphonies - they all have at least one great tune in them.  I'm really liking the fourth a lot.

I forgot to say this yesterday:

Rhubarb Pie.

We used to have a bunch of rhubarb plants growing next to the garden fence when we lived in the country the first time.  My mother would cut the rhubarb and make pies which I loved with ICE CREAM.

Then one day late in the summer, I saw both of our dogs relieving themselves all over the plants.....I didn't eat anymore rhubarb pie after that.

I am excited to read about the new Sherman project.   I saw IT'S ALIVE a few weeks ago on TCM....most entertaining.  And I certainly remember the second release with some pretty horrifying ads on the radio!

Nice photo of Mr Sherman & Mr Cohen as well.  I think many years ago, for some reason, I submitted a script to AIP.....several months later, it came back to me with a letter from Mr Cohen saying thanks and continue working.  I am still not sure how it ended up in his office.....

Thank you, DR vixmom.

I might as well address my absence since I'm getting so many welcomes.  I appreciate them but I am still in shock over the election, and nothing about our president-elect makes me happy, from the thuggish and ugly behavior he encouraged during his campaign to his involvement with the Russian government to his selection of racists, bigots, and other fools to his proposed administration as well as the rise in hate crimes, as though these ugly, violent shits have carte blanche to be nasty as possible now that their new president will supposedly permit this.

I see absolutely no good in his election and a lot of bad. It fills me with rage and occupies too much of my time.  Last week was bad, but nothing much is cheering me this week either.

Terrible night of sleep (one of those in which you go to bed and are instantly wide awake and remain so), and though I'm theoretically free to go back to bed now and try to make up for some of it, that's just not happening either.  Better luck tonight.

So, it's been a terrible day with good moments.  I went to the bank before I caught the 104 bus and withdrew $60.00, three new $20 bills, all sticking together.

At 50th Street, I missed the crosstown bus, so I grabbed a taxi, who took me to Rockefeller Plaza, and the cost was $4.30.  I paid him with a $20 bill (I thought) and I asked him for $15 change. I gave him a $2.00 tip, a total tip of $2.70.  Just before I left the taxi, I asked the driver for a receipt.

I got to my barber and discovered I'd given him all three $20 bills!  The jerk never bothered to tell I'd given him too many and my taxi ride of two blocks cost me $47.00.  I had to walk to Sixth Avenue and 52n Street to withdraw another $60.

That completely sucks, DR Elmore.  So glad you have the receipt with the cab ID.

Just anecdotally (because I know this won't make Dr Elmore feel any better about it), I've seen that with brand new twenties two or three times in just the past couple of weeks.  Even a guy at my bank said he was having trouble separating these new ones.

We're celebrating Skip's birthday today by ordering from one of our favorite restaurants for lunch, and then we'll have a very small dinner here tonight.

I had to give Skip his main birthday gift a little early.  it's a cookbook that looked really good online, but I didn't realize how large the book was, and the packaging was even more enormous.  So rather than having that big box hanging around, i gave it to him in advance.

Very interesting listening to all this Sibelius.  Where I had alternate versions of the symphonies they were by Ormandy.  So, what I can tell you is I simply don't care for Maazel's performances of those symphonies, which are the first, second, and seventh.  I listened to the Maazel first and I thought each symphony was okay.  Then Ormandy and what a difference - the playing in the Maazel can't be faulted it's all in the way the music is shaped and presented by each conductor.  I've read up on all the other full sets available and I'll take a chance on the first Colin Davis go-through of the seven symphonies with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, who play so beautifully on the Steinberg The Planets.   It's highly thought of and the samples sound beautiful and he seems to be in the Ormandy mould.  Ormandy was a huge champion of Sibelius and it's really surprising he didn't record all the symphonies.

And in the polar opposite department, I am listening to the music of George Antheil, the "bad boy of music" so dubbed for what was at the time his completely outrageous Ballet Mechanique.  We issued that and his fourth symphony back in the Bay Cities days and I have no memory at all of that CD.  But in the closet I had several discs which I'm sure contain better performances.  Listening to his piano concerto now - first movement ranges from interesting tonalities to banging, but there's something fun about it.  He was also a very good if not prolific film composer - we issued his The Pride and the Passion on CD, which is wonderful, and I love his ballet that I wrote about the other day, Capital of the World.

I just spoke to Rob Berman, who flies to Japan at 6:00am tomorrow.  When he returns on Nov. 28, I hope we can finally make the Big announcement.

That's great, Larry!

But now, it's time for me to leave work and go home for a bit before rehearsal.  I think we're going to try and run the whole show...or at least a goodly portion of it.  We'll see what happens.  Pray for Rosemary's Baby!

Until later!

Back from a friend's house, where I learned a little something about copying HD material from one's DVR, retaining the HD video and surround sound, suitable for playing off a hard drive or burning to DVD or BD.  Yay!!

George, I forgot to mention it, but thank you for the DVD. It was part of my vacation mail. I look forward to watching it, hopefully this weekend.

I'm ready to go back to tonal right about now.  I listened to the Antheil symphonies - not for me, but certainly worth listening to.  Then I listened to another film composer's symphonies - two of them anyway - Benjamin Frankel - I like his film work but the two symphonies were just, for me, noise, modern, kind of serialism and it's just too atonal for me, although, that said, there are some atonal works I'm fond of.  Now I'm listening to the second and third symphonies of yet another film composer, Ernst Toch.  I like these slightly better than the others I've heard today, but still nothing I ever need to hear again.  Interestingly, his third symphony won the Pulitzer Prize.  I do like his orchestration very much.

You know a film composer I (and countless others) wish we would someday hear more from ... and won't?

I was not crazy about the first episodes of Republic of Doyle when I started watching it, and I'm now on Season Four. It really grew on me.  I just watched an episode about an art thief that was nothing but slapstick and comedy, and it was fantastic.  I needed a good laugh, and it provided it,  There's always a bit of comedy, but this was nothing but an attempt to highlight that side of the series.

And so to bed.  Physical therapy begins tomorrow.

Oh, yeah. One last note: I've started listening to Margaret Atwood's latest, Hag-Seed. It's a modern take on The Tempest, and it's part of the series of novels that are setting Shakespeare in modern times. Atwood's take, so far, is great.

It makes me want to see the original again.

Does anyone like a particular filmed version of the play? Propsero's Books was OK, and the TV version with Richard Burton and Lee Remick was not up to snuff.

I liked the version with Helen Mirren as Prospera.

It's been an interesting listening day - not a lot of stuff that took my fancy - after the Gorecki third symphony I went back to tonal land with some Herbert Howells, who I remember loving, but of the CD I uploaded I only like one piece.  I've basically nuked two-thirds of what I uploaded today.  Tomorrow a lot of stuff should be coming, so that will be nice.  More Planets, more Sibelius, more TUNES.

For a complete change of pace I was listening to John McGlinn's recording of Jerome Kern overtures - a rather horrible-sounding album that wears thin VERY quickly.  And so, on I went to the last of the pile I'd pulled a few days ago - three albums of Samuel Barber music - I love Samuel Barber for the most part.  Listening to his first symphony, in a performance by Leonard Slatkin, never one of my favorite conductors.  I have another performance on the Unicorn label, but the sound of that one is pinched and ugly and rather disgusting - I think I'd probably like the performance better, but it was too hard on the ears.

I also have Pucture (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1582248/reference), which is also overdue, but only by a couple days.  I knew "Pucture" was late, but didn't know that "K&S" was due, too.  Actually, I completely forgot that I even had "K&S," so no wonder it's overdue. ::)

The library charges fines at 15 cents a day.  You can accrue up to $10 before you're cut off.  But if you never reach that limit, you never have to pay.  Even with these fines, I'll still be under $5. :)
