I think I've also answered the Trivia Contest--and here I was about to tell JR there's a 6 Degrees connection to one of our favorite people, but he's already discovered it.

It's so important to be well dressed when one dies.  Or have I said too much?

Moving on (a Twyla Tharp/Billy Joel reference)--HPATOOTP (one really doesn't save too much time acronyming that, LOL) was enjoyable, though, like Ratatouille, I think it would have been better sans about 10-15 minutes.  The 3D effects at the climax were really excellent and the new generation glasses didn't give me the headache those old cardboard red and blue ones used to.

Strangely, for a digitally projected IMAX film, there were several moments of weird splotches, like something was on the lense.  Not good for something that cost us $50 as a family to go see.

Next door to the theater was a Discovery Channel store.  They're closing all the stores nationwide, so they have everything (as in everything--even the shelves) on sale at 40 to 60 percent off.  We got Gabe an early birthday present--a DNA extractor (I kid you not--the thing comes with two, count 'em, two working centrifuges).  I went a little crazy in the DVD department, as I am wont to do.  I spent this afternoon watching the first episode of a really excellent BBC series about Egypt.  I'm just getting up to the Curse of Tutankhamen.

Not by my standards.

...Hmm.....anything that costs $50 as a family should by definition include a hot dog for everyone and a water slide.  8)

I saw that movie when I was but a child living in Germany for a summer.  I remember seeing it at the Post Cinema where my sister was the Service Club manager.  It was on a double feature with some women's lib movie directed by Jackie Cooper that featured Helen Reddy singing "I Am Woman."  I think it was called Stand Up and Be Counted or something like that.  How I remember that Jackie Cooper directed it is anyone's guess.  ;)

OMG--I even remembered the title.  What I didn't remember is it was written by Bernie Slade, lifelong friend and tenant of my Uncle Charlie.  It was Bernie's Same Time Next Year that put Charlie in an apopleptic fit (jokingly) when he invested in it hoping for a tax write-off.  :)

The greeter at the store said it was decided at the last stockholders' meeting--they'll continue to offer everything the store sells online, they're just not going to have brick and mortar stores anymore.  Sound familiar, cast recording collectors?

Yeah, I just did a websearch and saw the news had been announced in May. Apparently the CEO is taking the channel public and wanted to "position" the channel for profit...

Well, if our boys are any indication, they have a bright future.  Our kids much prefer Discovery Channel to even the cartoon networks.

I did get the front yard mowed before we had a shower. I felt a drop or two of rain while I was mowing, but it didn't start raining until 45 minutes later, and then briefly.

And luckily, because a storm was coming, there was cloud cover and slightly cooler, breezier air so it wasn't quite so hot. I prefer to mow in the early morning, but we've had so many showers lately that I couldn't chance another weekend of not getting it done.

I went back and finished the ROVING MARS DVD. All I had left was the DISNEYLAND episode entitled "Mays and Beyond." Though the main titles and credits were in black and white, the show itself was in full color, both live action and animation sequences. Part of the hour was a simplified explanation of evolution. Amazing what was allowed without furor on TV back then. Now, I'd be shocked if even something as simple and entertaining as this explanation didn't bring down the wrath of fundamentalists everywhere.

And, of course, the speculations about what potentially was on Mars are funny to look at now knowing what we know, but very entertaining to see how our knowledge progresses through the generations through science.

I watched last night's MONK to continue my evening viewing. Not a bad episode this time and an OK mystery. Sarah Silverman played Monk's #1 fan again, and that was fun.

Randy Disher took part in a bachelor auction for charity in the episode (so did the Captain and Monk), and when the actor stripped off his shirt in trying to impress ladies to bid on him, there was a hunk underneath. I was very surprised!

PSYCH had a riff on AMERICAN IDOL that was also fun but very, very silly. Maybe the show was this silly last year, but I didn't quite remember it being this over the top. I enjoyed it, but Shawn's faux-psychic performance didn't get as much of a chance to shine this week.
