I'm plugging in the computer since there is a lull between storms. Atlanta is a mess---at least 30 people went to the hospital, many buildings had their roofs blown off and windows blown out. Several buildings collapsed but fortunately they don't think anyone was inside; they were lofts being rehabbed. After it's light out they will be able to figure out exactly what happened, but right now they think it was a #2 tornado.

We were miraculously spared, but there will be even more activity later today. There were tons of visitors in town because this was during an SEC playoff and it did damage to the GA Dome where the game was played, as well as CNN (the picture Sing posted.)

Lots of cars are totalled with bricks and debris crushing them, and they interviewed one guy who was blown down the street in his car, which was totalled but he emerged unscathed!

OK, I'm going to get some sleep for a bit. Thanks to all the vibes for Greg! The stone still has to make its exit, so we are going to try a "home remedy" he read about on the world-wide interweb.

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up...  And I just had one of those yummilicious Stardbucks breakfast sandwiches for breakfast... without even having to head down the block to the Starbucks to get one!  And how, you may ask, was this all possible?  Well....

Just as my roommate, Jim, and I were heading into the subway stop at 50th and 8th Ave., a vaguely familiar man came up to me and asked, "Excuse me... Do you have children?"  -Umm.. No, I don't.

It turned out to be the night manager for the Starbucks down the street, and he had these big bags filled with various Starbucks goodies.  Even though they have much longer shelf lifes, they only keep things on display and in store for two to three days (depending on the item).  Well, he had a whole bag of the various breakfast sandwiches, as well a couple of their Rice Krispie Treats and a couple of slices of their Banana Walnut Loaf.  He said that he normally bags up the leftovers from the day, and then as he's heading to the subway, he usually gives them away to the homeless people he sees while he's walking.  Alas, he said he didn't come across anyone last night - not even some of his "regulars" - so he was offering them to people on the subway.  The reason he asked me if I had children was just in case I didn't feel like cooking them breakfast in the morning. ;)  So, needless to say, I happy and hesitantly took his offerings, and we headed home.

-And just a few minutes, I popped one of the ham, egg and cheese sandwiches in the microwave for a minute, then transferred over to the preheated 400 degree oven to crisp up a bit and to finish cooking.  And, thus, breakfast!

:)

Of course, after last night, I think some coffee - Starbucks or otherwise - would probably be a good thing too this morning.  ;)

*Although, actually, I'm fine. I ate rather well last night, so I had plenty of food in my system to complement my wine consumption.  -And Becco's grissini are just too good too resist.  And the two bottles of wine were shared between four people, so...  All is well in head and stomach this morning.

TMI?

Saturday morning greetings!  It was very foggy when I got up just before 8am, but that seems to be clearing.  Today is the first day of a 3-day weekend for me - nothing planned until 3pm, when I'm scheduled to sell books at the AAUW/Middletown booksale (as of 10pm last night, we'd already made $3800).

Vibes to DR Edi and her DH Greg as they deal with storms and kidney stones - yikes!

My cousin lives about 50 miles west of Atlanta and I'm wondering if they've been effected by the storms.  I think he's out of state on business this weekend, but don't know if his fiance is with him or not.  I'll try to call him later.  He and his brother (who lives in Japan) are due here Monday evening to visit their mom (my mother's sister, who lives in the same retirement community).

I have SHANGHAI EXPRESS on laserdisc and watched it about six months ago. It's a very entertaining movie. No wonder it was such a big hit in its day.

BLONDE VENUS is definitely my favorite from her early star period. She goes from good girl to bad girl, from rags to glamour: what's not to like? I also adore THE SCARLET EMPRESS.

DESTRY RIDES AGAIN is one of the great comeback vehicles of all time, and she's marvelous in it.

I've mentioned here many times how much I love the often denegrated Hitchcock thriller STAGE FRIGHT. Deitrich is one of the reasons it's so wonderful.

I saw A FOREIGN AFFAIR for the first time within the last year. She's wonderful in it, stealing the show from everyone else. Also love her 50s western RANCHO NOTORIOUS which I recorded off TCM onto a DVD-R.

And WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION and JUDGMENT AT NUREMBURG are both wonderful showcases for her. Can't believe she didn't get more recognition for her roles in both.

Hi all!   I’ve been on antibiotics the entire week.  Man, do those things do a number on me.  I get so tired on them.

I’m so sorry to hear that  Edi's Greg! Has kidney stones.  I just had my yearly KUB yesterday to see if I have any.   I can never tell that I have them—no pain at all.

I also saw the sleep doctor.  I thought I was doing really well with what ever it was that I had last week until he asked me if I was on any kind of antibiotic.  When I told him I was he said that was a good thing because my throat is red and if I wasn’t on them , he would have put me on some.

I didn’t even know my throat had anything to do with having an allergic reaction but there you are.  I just know that I have been very tired this week.

I was going to work outside but I guess I need to take it easy this weekend and get all the way well before I do anything.

Two other Dietrich favorites: Maximillian Schell's documentary MARLENE is mesmerizing. Love the way it was put together.

AMC also did a special on her at least a decade or more ago with her daughter and grandson providing commentary and clips (Sean Young began as narrator but thankfully faded from view after the introductions.) It was called something like "A Study in Shadows." That's not exactly right, but the actual title escapes me at the moment.

It's from too few work hours to a surfeit.  My shift for today has already been extended by two hours.  And next week I'm scheduled to work forty-one!  (But, since five of those hours are on Sunday, which does not count as part of the regular work week, the forty-first hour doesn't count as overtime.)

Speaking of which, it's already time for me to go.

Did I tell you all that I switched the dogs food to a brand called "Bil-Jac".  No more store brands for them.  I can't really afford to buy bags of food and can food to with it so I decided that I would buy one food but a good one.

Much to my suprise, they LOVE it!  And I've noticed a huge difference in the pair of them.  Not just their coats but Bear is not having half as hard a time getting up and down like he was.

I get the Large Breed version of it and it has lots of Glucosamine in it for the large dogs.  It does look funny--like rabbit food.  But hey, if it works...

My thought has always been that it doesn't matter how much the food costs, a dollor or fifty dollars, if the dog won't eat it then what good is it?

Last night, when I was at the pet store, they had something else new call Whole Meals.  It looks something like a bone but is equal to giving them two cans of food.  I bought a sample pack and both Bear and Sheena loved it.

Not sure if I can keep getting it, I like the Bil-Jac better but if nothng else, it will make a good treat.

One last bit of new news.  I bought a new cell phone.  Same phone number, just an upgrade.  It's a Virgin Cyclops.  I like clamshell phones because I've heard so many stories about someone having their phone turn on in their purse.

This isn't the most fancy phone but I don't look for that.  I just want it to ring and be able to answer it.

It does have a camera, mobile im, mobile email, pix messaging, web browsing, txt messaging, etc.  I'll still put "Tubular  Bells" on it as my ring tone.  I think it's a good joke.

We are going to the craft fair at the mall today then down to Tubac and some restaurant that has a giant chicken outside or something like that.  I have taken many photos and will post some when I get back to high speed internet. Maybe while waiting in DIA tomorrow. The high-speed is free at the airport

Edi- In case you didn't go back and catch up (I know I am way behind) I'm actually in Green Valley, Arizona, staying with my parents at the place they rented for the month of March. It's a nice 2 bedroom condo. Nothing real fancy but nice in the retirement community kind of way. It's in an area called Desert Hills.

We went to Nogales yesterday, where the infamous hole in the sidewalk was located.  We did find the brother of one of my clients. They gave us very good directions to his restaurant. My parents and their friend Helen were a bit leary about going to a restaurant in Nogales, but it was a really cute cafe in El Triangulo.  Armando made us wonderful tacos with avacado on them.   We aslo ate at La Roca and had a big meal there - garlic shrimp, rice, margaritas.  I think I wrote about this yesterday.

Anyway, it was a lot of fun. One more day and then my suitcase and I will head home. Hopefully on the same planes this time

DR Cillaliz - Glad to hear that your mom is feeling OK today.

I'm enjoying your AZ travelogue - I kind of miss our vacations out there since my mom moved back here (don't get me wrong, I like having her close by...).  Tubac was one of her favorite places, but we never managed to get there.  She lived in Phoenix and we'd take her on a little trip away whenever we visited her.  Tucson was one of our favorites - Old Tucson Studios was DS Rob's first experience at a theme park .

My dad and I went to Old Tucson years ago. There was a fire there at one time, but mom thinks they may have rebuilt it.  I lived in Phoenix for 5 1/2 years, but never got south of Tucson, so this has been fun. I never pictured Nogales to be mountainous or at least very hilly, so my preconceived ideas were quickly thrown out the window.

There is a definite fence lining the border.  We were just waived through at the border and at the check point on the interstate. Of course we didn't drive into Mexico, we parked and walked across the border, so I'm sure that's a lot easier than taking a vehicle through

Mom just gave me the 15 minute warning for going to the craft show.  I'm lucky, if I buy anything they can take it back in the van when they go back to Iowa and since they are stopping at my house for the night. So far I bought a ceramic cat that was chipped when mom fell - I was carrying her huge ceramic fish, so she carried my cat.  I think it may have broken her fall and a little yellow paint and it will look as good as new

I have to go to the Virgin site and activate this phone.  You know, I know it sounds silly but I feel bad about giving up my old phone.  It's served me well.

I only got the new one because the old one is so small and my eyesight isn't the best in world.  I thought one with bigger numbers and a bigger display would be better for me.

I want to turn the old phone in to someplace that gives them to abused women so they have a way to call for help.  It's a good phone, nothing is wrong with it.

Wonder how many times DR Jose will have to play "I Just Can't Wait to Be King" today?

Well... Since we only had 14(?!?!?!?!?) boys show up this morning to audition for Young Simba...

5 times in the teaching portion
14 times as each young boy sang it by themselves
2 more times all together

And that makes 21 times that I had to play "I Just Can't Wait To Be King" - and it was just the short 16-bar cut too!

*And, technically, I'm still on the clock for two more hours! ;)

I've not seen "Desire", but I'll "third" the other titles.  Add to that "No Highway in the Sky" with Jimmy Stewart and Glynis Johns.  This was Marlene in post-war full-glam mode, basically playing herself.

Well, I normally wouldn't be counting, but since the turnout was so small this morning, it was quite easy to keep track of things since the process is pretty streamlined.  If the turnout had been bigger, we would have not let each boy sing the song by themselves - we would have broken each verse up.

When we took in Wiggley, I noted to his owner that he had neither a name tag or a state license - she went back home and immediately went and got both items which we went and picked up yesterday (along with two toys). One toy is a large hard rubber red Kong ball. He will chase after it, but not give it back. He prances about the house carrying the ball until he throws/drops it. We now regularly hear "thunk..thunk.....thunk". There is also the grand cacophony when he drops it down the 18 wooden steps leading to the basement!

A fun suggestion from California:

The Purina Diet

I have 2 large dogs, and was buying a large bag of Purina at Wal-Mart and was in line to check out.

The woman behind me asked if I had a dog?

Duh?

On impulse, I told her no, I was starting The Purina Diet again. Although I probably shouldn't because I'd ended up in the hospital the last time. But I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes everywhere and IVs in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and the way it works is to load your pockets with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so I was going to try it again

I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story, particularly a tall guy who was standing behind her.

Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me?

I told her no, I'd been sitting in the street licking my butt and a car hit me.

I thought the guy standing behind her was going to need help as he staggered to the door laughing.

Life is short. Break the rules, forgive quickly, kiss slowly, love deeply.

Laugh uncontrollably, and never regret anything that made you smile.

TOPIC OF THE DAY

Mmm...Marlene Dietrich - Such a POWERFUL actress!
I still haven't seen all her films but of those I have, these are my favorites:

1933 - The Song of Songs
1939 - Destry Rides Again
1948 - A Foreign Affair
1950 - Stage Fright
1951 - No Highway in the Sky (No one LISTENS like Marlene. Watch her in the scene when she first meets James Stewart on the plane and later when she realizes Glynnis Johns is the right woman for him.)
1957 - Witness for the Prosecution (The first time I saw this film, I never guessed she was in disguise)
1961 - Judgment at Nuremberg

Atlanta is a mess---everyone has been told not to try to go into downtown. I don't know if the basketball playoffs are still going on. But we came out unscathed---not even a tree limb down.

Today I went with two client friends and visiting in-laws, who have also become friends over the years, to the American Craft Council show. I bought 4 items. Some years I don't buy anything because things are so expensive; much of it is from artists who sell at their museum in NY. All items met with Mr. Linton's approval.

We haven't tried the "home remedy" yet---Greg is on hold for ABC and if they can line up a remote truck here they will be doing live broadcasts. If that doesn't transpire, the remedy will commence. for TCB, it involves consuming vast quantities of Coca Cola and pureed asparagus! (Not mixed together...)

I finished getting the phone set up.  What a pain to have to re enter all the phone numbers I need.  There has GOT to be an easier way!

DR Edisaurus, I wanted to tell you that my kiddney stone doctor has me on Potassium Citrate 10 Meq Taups twice a day to stop my development of the stones.  I also have to have the KUB done once a year, like I did yesterday.

I'll see the doctor in about two weeks to go over the results.  I don't think the KUB will turn up anything.  I haven't had a problem since I was put on the meds.

Much as I hate to take a pill, I'll confess it is much easier then having to take time off from work every couple months to have the sound wave treatment.

To be honest, I have only seen a couple of her films. She never really appealed to me so I have never sought out any of her films. She also never worked with any actors I really like, so therefore I have never stumbled upon her films, either.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 13) - Two-time U.S. figure skating champion Evan Lysacek withdrew from next week's world championships after hurting his left arm in a fall during practice.

Lysacek's right skate blade broke on the landing of a triple axel Wednesday, and the fall injured his left forearm, elbow and shoulder. No bones were broken, but he's wearing a soft cast and will be in a sling for about a week. Doctors have told him not to jump or do spins for two weeks.

The world championships begin Tuesday in Goteborg, Sweden.

"I'm obviously disappointed that I won't be there," Lysacek said. "I've been skating very well, and I really felt like the momentum was building. I'm going to continue to train as hard as I can, work to get this equipment issue straightened out, and return strong for next season."

Lysacek said he had gone through three blades in three days before the fall.

Former U.S. junior champ Jeremy Abbott will replace Lysacek at the worlds. This is Abbott's second turn as a fill-in; he went to last month's Four Continents championship after Johnny Weir withdrew.

"I wish Jeremy the best of luck," Lysacek said.

Dodged another bullet! There was a tornado sighting about a mile from our house but it went south. They were predicting 3 inch hail, so we cleared out the garage, stashed gReg's car at the rail staiton parking deck and then put mine in the garage. We had 2 cats in carriers ready to go downstairs when we got the all-clear. Whew!

I hate it when I buy some dog goodies and someone asks the same thing.  I've been tempted to say they were for me.

When I was buying FANCY FEAST cans at Safeway one day, the clerk asked if I had cats.  I said, "No, but it makes a great meatloaf!"

I've always wanted to see a tornado.--Lord knows I dream about them all the time.

I would love to go on one of those tornado tours.  Mind you, I don't want to see one hurt anyone.  I want to see it in a field out in the middle of nowhere.  I think they are one of the coolest things on Earth.  I always stop to watch any show that shows them.

I'm thinking about maybe taking one of those tours next (not the upcoming) summer.  Depends on if I have a job or not.

POLITICAL RANT FOLLOWS!

It's not often one gets to witness near perfection!

In the last 24 hours, FoxNews had waged one the most blatantly prejudicial attacks on Senator Obama possible. It started with almost unending re-airing of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright's obscene "God Damn America" sermons. Fox then aired Obama's interview in which he denounced, in no uncertain terms, the Rev's expressed views. That renunciation notwithstanding, an on-screen wag noted that Barak was now really in trouble because the opposition would now search the history files to see if Barak was ever present during one of the egregious sermons, for if he had been, he was now clearly a liar - he had stated that "if he ever heard those views expressed he would have resigned from the church".

No, DAMMIT, that is NOT what he said.  He said that if he had heard the Rev express such views, he would have taken him to task, and if he ever AGAIN heard him preach such views he would have resigned from the church. (Barak even reiterated that he would give the Rev a one-time pass because we all make mistakes). This was not some comment he make weeks ago, it was one it had uttered just moments before in the interview just aired!

The Rev Wright is no longer on the scene - Obama has clearly and unequivocally renounced those views. Has he clearly and unequivocally renounced the person of the Rev Wright, his longtime spiritual advisor, no - nor should he have to. (What happened to hate the sin, love the sinner!).

The harpies on FOX will not rest until Obama hunts down the Rev and causes him to be flogged and hanged in the town square (or from a tree, in the grand tradition).

I almost expect Sean Hannity to come out with customized lynching kits to sell on the Fox web site!

Fair and Balanced my ass!

Hello, all!

Back from seeing the Met’s new production of Benjamin Britten’s Peter Grimes, projected live in HD to my local movie theatre.  WOW!

Leaving the production aside for the moment:  if you have any interest in opera, and can’t get to New York City, I highly encourage you to try this out.  HERE (http://www.metoperafamily.org/metopera/broadcast/hd_events.aspx) is the link to what’s being broadcast when, and where to find the closest theatre to you.

Those of you who have HD televisions are used to the clarity and detail by now, but for me it was a real eye-opener.  You could see every hair on the back of the [cute] cellist’s hand!!! Before it started, they zoomed in on an audience member reading his program, and you could actually read the synopsis out of his program!!! Plus you get comfortable, inexpensive seats, extra features and interviews before and during each intermission, and incredible close-ups and reaction shots that you’d never see from the house.  They’ve obviously planned each shot and camera cue; it was incredibly dramatic and aligned to what was happening in the score.  In this case, the opera was in English, but they do project the translations across the bottom of the screen.

As for Mr. Doyle – I was not impressed.  His staging did NOT serve the composer or the actors well.  But it didn’t dampen the effectiveness of the piece, especially viewed this way, because you got all the drama from the close-ups of the actors.  Had I been sitting in the house, I doubt I would have been so moved.  The Met chorus and orchestra outdid themselves, as well as Anthony Dean Griffey in the title role.

Just something I noticed over the past week or two...

At the bottom of all the ads - and in the new TV ad - for the Broadway production of Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein", in very large print is the following:

ALL TICKETS $50-125

I guess they're no longer featuring the $450 premium seats.  -I wonder why?  ;)

You'll see wonderful clouds scudding by- always -----and see the land where "Oklahoma!" was filmed!   Enjoy.  The clouds alone and the the green fiels are worth it.

Green Fields?? I didn't see any green fields. Everything here is pretty much dry and yellow or brown except for the cacti

I am trying--I don't drink any sodas and I cut my meals in half, walk when I can, etc., etc.  But I don't step on the scale every morning and I don't beat myself up if I gain a pound.

First let me say that I did not take this photograph, nor was this  taken from my balcony.  It is taken on Stadium Way, which leads up the hill from downtown Tacoma to Stadium High School (the setting for the film 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU).

If you have ever wondered why I live in Tacoma, this is one of the reasons.

DRbrian - the serial was called - "Annette" - and we are hoping for a DVD release after the second "Spin & Marty" set.  Anything....anything BUT "Corky & White Shadow."

DR DANISE sounds like you found the food for your doggies!!!  Congrats on your new telephone!

This serial had my favorite teaser.....a big disagreement between Annette and Roberta and the announcer saying breathlessly, "Don't miss the next episode:  'Almost a Hair Pulling Fight'!"

My sister expressed her enthusiasm for genealogy by saying how much she likes the digging.  Our mother said, "Just don't dig too deep."  I figure she knows the secret and doesn't want us to find out OR she just suspects there's a secret and doesn't want to know herself.

So, what's the story?

When she was 14 years old, my grandmother used to take the interurban train from Brooklyn, Indiana, into Mooresville to babysit for two little girls.  Their mother had passed away.

One day, the father came home early and attacked her.  She was too afraid to tell anyone what happened and even continued to babysit for the little girls.

A few weeks later, she met my grandfather, and a couple of months later, they became engaged.  It was then that my grandmother had to tell him that she was going to have a baby....and she told him the whole story.

My grandfather walked into town with a baseball bat and dispatched the guy up side the head.  The guy survived but soon moved away.

My aunt the child of the attack.....does NOT know the story....

And so there you are.   Don't look if you don't want to find out.  Sad tale of long ago with repercussions to many many folks.

I'm so very happy Wiggly has his own toys to play with.  For now will he wear a tag with your address and phone number?

Heh.

I began walking. I started with a mile a day. Then that turned into two miles. Then three. These days, I usually walk between three and six miles a day. That, along with eliminating sugary sodas and some other dietary changes, helped enormously. The big "secret" for me was learning how to enjoy the walking and making it a regular part of my day. You hear a lot about making "lifetime changes." That was what I did. What I do is listen to Audiobooks on my iPod.  In the last six months alone, I have "read" numerous books. Before that, I had actually read only a few books in the past 10 years. So I have become healthier AND well read!

When I was buying FANCY FEAST cans at Safeway one day, the clerk asked if I had cats.  I said, "No, but it makes a great meatloaf!"

When my ancient cat was nearing the end of his days, I was feeding him chicken baby food.

One day when I was checking out, the clerk asked: "How old da baby?" I said "20".

Now that I am into the Closer schedule, I will be working a little over 3 miles from home. There are good places to park one mile and two miles from work, so I have planned to work up to taking a 3 mile walk to work. I should have started the middle of last week but I was having to carry a lot of heavy stuff with me besides my own excess baggage!)

But I am inspired and will walk to work tomorrow in honor of Bretty. We've also started walking a lot more---walking to dinner, etc. We are lucky to now be living in a place where there's lots of great stuff to walk to.

Next I watched 12 MONKEYS on HD DVD. The movie has always looked soft and erratic on home video (I had the laser and the first DVD release), and while the HD-DVD is sharper, it's still bright in a lot of scenes. SOme of it, though, is undoubtedly the best I've ever seen it look, and I'm glad to have this version of the film, another favorite.

Netflix brought me an disco of LOVE AMERICAN STYLE episodes...what memories it brought back...I had forgotten about those little short comedy scenes in between the stories and gosh, what wonderful people popped up! Van Williams, Richard Long, Ruth McDevitt, Carolyn Jones, Donna Douglas, Gary Collins, Nobu McCarthy, Claudine Longet, Red Buttons (he was hilarious!), Edward Everett Horton...but it was the theme song what really put me back in time!

Greetings one and all...

I have been busy since I returned from Utah and I have not had an opportunity to drop in to post. Work was crazy and DBF was spending his spring break up here.

He flew out this evening.

Regarding TORCHWOOD -- I have TiVoed and burned every episode to DVD to date...but still haven't watched any episodes. I assume those of you "in the know" realize that TORCHWOOD is not only a spinoff of DOCTOR WHO -- it's also an anagram of the name!

Torchwood was the original secret working title of the new series.

I like Torchwood...

Anyone want to hear a shocking story?

Yes, it can JRAND...

Go for it!

Shocking....

A friend who I was helping do research found out that a relation on one of her lines was in the TN state pen for murdering several people.

I am acquainted with some one who is descended from one of the wives of Brigham young

Of course, there's the garlic diet.  Lots and lots of garlic.  You don't lose weight but you look thinner from a distance.

From a distance, you look really thin
Even though you're reeeeally not
From a distance, you've got just one chin
Even though you've go-ot a lot

We like to take her something when we see her performances.  Last time it was flowers, but tomorrow we're taking her a shamrock plant...

The theatre needs a sign:

March 15: A section of collapsed crane lies on top of a crushed building in New York. A giant crane toppled over at a construction site and smashed into a block of residential buildings.

Tonight's Side Show went quite well.  Our director Keith is leaving in the morning before our matinee.  Someone got one of the posters and a very nice wooden frame and we all signed the poster with our names and character names.  We presented it to Keith before tonight's show.  It was a lovely gift. :)
