Title: COLE SLAW
Post by: bk on February 22, 2011, 12:17:36 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes sang the praises of both pastrami and Cole Slaw, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently singing the Cole Slaw ditty, "MOOve, MOOve, MOOve, You Big Lummox."

Inkhorn, Inkhorn

Seems to me you'd stop and see
How beautiful they are.

Since the notes aren't up, I'll respond to yesterday's TOD:

Favorite Norman Jewish movies: MOONSTRUCK and one he did as a producer: DANCE ME OUTSIDE

Favorite Cher movies: MOONSTRUCK, MERMAIDS, MASK

Favorite Cher songs: Uhhhhh...none, but "Half-Breed" always makes me laugh...

bk, since you are a pastrami connoisseur, have you ever been here?

http://www.thehat.com/loca.htm

I went to the one around Alta Dena when we were in LA last year. A writer friend took us there after Cowboy Envy's concert. It was delish and one sandwich was enough for two. Greg and I were really glad we split one!

Good morning, all! I have next to nothing to report this morning. The new tenant above me arrived at 5:42 am, walked around for a bit, and I have no idea if he's now sleeping or if he's gone. I would swear that no one's currently living above me, because I hardly ever hear signs of living, but someone certainly comes and goes from the space. I only wish they'd do it between 7am and 11 pm.

I was having a weird dream about checking books out of the library with a retured opera singer - I no longer remember who, possibly Roberta Peters - and Patrice Munsel was one of the librarians! Then the library seemed to becoem Barnes & Noble, and then it was 5:42 and my neighbor woke me up.

Today, a stop at the pharmacy for some meds and a trip to Toyland. That's it.

Here I am, at the office. The boss of my boss (she's new having begun on Valentine's Day) gave me a card. That was nice. I left with an empty desk and came back to an empty desk. I picked up work from the shelf and have enough to keep me busy for the rest of the day.

I shall listen to my beloved BBC and play with Kate B. Reynolds and Jerome along with the Fuller Trust and the Gates Foundation.

Tuesday morning greetings!  Our household was up early to see Rob off to firefighter class and now the cousins are preparing for their departure.  They'll visit my aunt on their way to the Cincinnati airport where they'll catch their plane to Atlanta.  There they'll meet up with my cousin's dad (aunt's ex-husband) who's flying in from Pittsburgh and spend this next week with my other cousin, his wife, and my Japan cousin's oldest son, who's attending the college where my GA cousin teaches.  I wish I could go with them.

Yes, DR TCB - so many young actors for those parts are impossible to work with.....of course what's great is that a lot of them know EVERYTHING about acting, theatre, scripts, props, and costumes, that working with them can be a great education.

They do everything but listen.

DR George re: your DVR. Can you check it to see what is supposed to record?

Mine also sometimes decides on its own not to record things. But (mine is a PVR) I can double check it.  If i go to the guide i can see if the show is highlighted in red. IF so it means it will record.

Mine sometimes decides not to record if a) they change the title (like top chef vs top chef allstars). Or if i have a show programed as from 8-9pm (sometimes if they change the time by a couple of minues it will not record which is why i mostly just put "record this show whenever it is on").

So i usually make sure the shows i want to record are highlighted in red.

Btw, you can watch the first 10 minutes of Castle online i'm sure.

Very true. Jrand.  When I started out in community theater it was in bit parts and in the chorus.  Nowdays, this crop of actors want to start with leading roles or nothing at all.  There is no learning their craft.  They know it all.

My sister and I saw Miss Faye Dunaway do MASTER CLASS on tour.  The entire audience was held in the lobby and then in the interior BEFORE we got to go into the theatre.  We were finally allowed in five minutes before the scheduled curtain time of 8 p.m.

The curtains were  already open and we saw a nice room with a grand piano.  Two large doors were closed USC.

Time passed.  Nothing was said.....time passed.....  By 8:30 people were beginning to leave, and there was some rhythmic clapping here and there.  The ushers all claimed to know NOTHING.

At 8:45, a man came out and sat at the piano.  He looked at us, and we looked at him.  He shrugged his shoulders and rolled his eyes.....and started to rearrange the music.

Then suddenly the doors opened and in came Faye Dunaway.  She was greeted with some recognition applause.

Then she started the play.  We were sitting in the third row.....and as part of the MASTER CLASS, Miss Dunaway was taking us all to task.  It was some funny stuff, and she was landing all the laughs.  Then she suddenly looked right at me and said: "What are you laughing at?  You don't have any personality either!"  I just shrugged.  That is the only time I have appeared with Miss Dunaway.

She was excellent in the play - I must say - and she looked beautiful.  And she received a standing ovation at the end of the evening, which came close to midnight.

The next day on the news - she said that the delay was caused by lighting problems and spotlight checks.....however in the 45 minutes we sat in our seats, not ONE light cue was changed....no spot lights or projections were to be seen.

When I talked to an usher as we were leaving - well.....it seems that the play had been in Cincinnati the week before and Miss Dunaway had fired both her makeup person and her hairdresser - and forgot to engage new ones in Indianapolis.

It was a lovely evening nevertheless......

edisaurus, I did not like the faux pastrami at the Hat - I found it barely better than what they serve at Togo's - real pastrami can be found best at Langer's and Nate 'n' Al's and even Brent's.

I haven't had enough pastrami to know what's good and what's faux, so I'll have to check out those places next time I'm in L.A.!

It's been an interesting day. I accomplished so much at the library that I am exceedingly happy. As to Encores!, Joshie was happy to have a repaired piano part for "Pernambuco," but he had a room full of assistants, since he thought I wouldn't be in, and i was mostly in the way. On my way to Lincoln Center I stopped in to browse at the new Juilliard Bookstore, which is lovely, and I had a great time browsing at music.

Now it's time for lunch, a wait for the mail, and transferring my NYPL notes to the computer.

Has anyone seen the story about the corrupt juvenile court judge in PA who was sending kids to detention homes for small crimes? It's criminal. On last night's news I saw the mother of a young man whom he sent away for seven months for possession of drug paraphernalia (not drugs!) and who later killed himself. It was really sad.

DR JRand60, it's horrible enough for a person representing the law to take advantage of it, but this creep was a total horror, sending kids on a joyride away for two years, ruining a young man's life, leaving criminal records for small offences. It's disgusting, and he should be imprisoned for a long time in a really bad place.

Headaches can be related to neck problems.  I'm not sure how the chiro can even diagnose your shoulder problem.  Just don't let anything be done you don't feel comfortable with.

Oh I love Chiros....always have.  What he diagnosed was that the tendon that goes from my bicep to my shoulder blade goes through a sort of groove the twisting motion as I tried to turn over when Ricky was laying on my bicep and my arm was over my head was enough to push it out of the groove but not dislocate my shoulder.   He messed around and thinks he popped it back in.  He also aligned my back and popped my neck....the shoulder no longer has the sharp pain, just a dull pain.. my back pain is gone.

Yes, Jennifer, I can see what is supposed to be recorded.  I have it set to record all new episodes of certain series, and the problem has been that a new episode (like last night's "Castle") just wouldn't record...for absolutely no apparent reason.  It's happened on several DVRs that I've had over the years.  I'd have plenty of room on the DVR and no conflicts.

:P is what I say to all that.

And I'm very happy that "Castle" is available on-line.

Oh I can tell you the exact second my shoulder was hurt.  I was laying in bed not quite awake, my arm was raised over my head and Ricky was laying on my bicep.  I tried to turn over (not thinking and half asleep) and suddenly a stabbing pain shot through my shoulder.  It was a cat related injury.

Thanks Ginny.  I asked if I'd need to come back, he said..."Oh, you'll know if you need to come back"  He said a lot of times that's all it needs but sometimes it goes out again.  I'm to wait a few days and see if it still hurts.   He's a great chiro.  When Edith's back went out she only needed one adjustment and all the pain was gone.  She was afraid of it, but isn't anymore.  And he's really inexpensive.

Hi all.  I don't know what was wrong with me yesterday but I started getting soooo tired yesterday afternoon at work and my eyesight go really blurry.  When I got home, I felt like I was going to lose the dinner I hadn't eaten yet if I didn't lay down.  I went to bed at 6:30 and slept until around midnight.  I then watched a little TV, turned over and went right back to sleep.

I woke again feeling all warm and cosy, feeling good and thinking it was around 3 or 4 AM.  I cracked my eye open to look at the clock and found it was 6:15 AM!  I leaped out of bed because the bus comes at 7.  I must have slept through the alarm (it resets itself so I didn't forget to set it).

I've felt pretty good today but I am going to go to bed around nine.

DR Laura, the friend I stayed with over the weekend tags monarchs when they migrate in August

She is in Iowa? Does she volunteer for Monarch Watch?

Not sure, the nature center tags them in August and she helps out.  Let me see if I can find a link to the nature center

If DR Ms. Karen would spend more time here on HHW rather than going around rough-housing, she wouldn't be breaking any bones.

PS: I said it so that BK would not have to.

I must have missed what it was Missy Karen did to break her wrist.   I'm thinking she tried to bitch-slap a lamp post.

But who knows?

It wasn't stated.  She slipped on a patch of ice and hit a rock.

They have been warining us about possible  snow starting tomorrow, but mostly to the North of Tacoma.  However, they are saying  that all of Western Washington should prepare for record-setting cold temps by the end of the week.

Today (so far) in Tumwater has been a day of quickly changing weather.  It started out drizzly, then it was sunny, then it snowed/hailed(!), then it was sunny again, then rainy, and now it's sunny again!  WTF??

Wait until tomorrow, it is going to get worse!

A couple of people in the show are from Tacoma...they'll have to decide if they can drive through any bad weather to get to rehearsals.  Both our director and stage manager said for them not to come if the driving gets really bad.

They had the videos of Diana on the TV when I was buying my morning tea.  It's so hard to believe she's gone.  I remember her wedding day.  I was so excited and must confess I was glued to the TV.

But I must also confess that I thought her wedding dress was the ugliest thing that I ever saw.  I don't know what I expected but that sure wasn't it.

There is a difference in elevation.  Heck, we get snow and ice while it is fine in town.  Heck, our section of our road gets ice while the bottom of the road is fine.

It cheered me up except I stopped at dinner and had the most horrible service I've had in town for ages. Back to square one.

I just finished reading a large chunk of Ron Moody's new autobiography which arrived from London today. It's very wonderful, particularly his accounts of learning to be an actor in the 1959 London production of CANDIDE with Denis Quilley, Mary Costa, and Victor Spinetti - he was a 36 year-old clown and revue comedian with no concept of acting - and his huge success in 1960 in OLIVER! He and Georgia Brown hatedeachother and his telling of their feud and her bad behavior onstage is quite interesting. She and Lionel Bart, who never wanted him to be Fagin, appear to be the most rrsponsible for his not playing the role on Broadway. The wonderful Vivienne Martin, who played the Queen in JUBILEE in 1999, shows up a lotin the book since she washis girlfriend at the time. She's a wonderful lady. She and Denis Quilley were my favorites in the 1999 broafcast.

John G. I just looked up the book on Amazon --- my sincere condolences- the acknowledgements  were  overwritten and pretentious - it seems the author must have been getting paid by the word - not exactly a motivation to move into the main body of the book

I was interested, however, to see that the author, rather like Merlin, is living backwards in time.

http://www.amazon.com/Schools-We-Need-Dont-Have/dp/0385495242/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1298432244&sr=1-1#reader_0385495242

In the introduction to the paperback version he writes that this book was met with praise in 1966 which signalled to him that a change had occurred in educational thinking since he last published in 1987.... :D

I haven't had a margarita since dinner.

Then it was back to the book. I made it through another 115 or so pages today. I will finish it up tomorrow and then start on the paper.

Vixmom, it must have been their typo. The book originally appeared in 1996, though it reads closer to 1966. So much of it is dated or the author was just willfully blind to the education system, especially when it comes to standardized testing. He's so in favor of them that he really has no idea that, at least in San Antonio, the tests are taught because the school districts' money depends on how they score. So, they do nothing but teach the tests in those grades that are forced to take them. That's not education.

Time for me to leave work, go home and do some laundry.  It's been just a bit too long since I've done some, so I MUST do at least a couple of loads.

Until later!
You could have that margarita in between loads.

If only I drank.
