Well, you've read the notes, you read them today even though they were written yesterday which was today when they were written although it is also today when they are posted but that was tomorrow at the time they were written today, and now it is time for you to post until tomorrow's cows come home today.

Welcome ten GUESTS! Who is staying up this late to read the notes? Come on in, the Mahler's fine. And speaking of Mahler - I guess I'd have to have the Sixth Symphony.

Now to bed, for I have many things awaiting me in the morning.

Was it a "repressed skinner" that gave us the Mule Skinner Blues?
I posted that yesterday having read today's notes. It's all very confusing when you are 61.

It is now tomorrow and I am going to bed.

If I was stranded on a desert Island I would be more concerned with getting of the scary island than listening to music...Is this also supposing I have a tv and vcr and dvd player and music box all plugged into some tree somewhere....? That's already more than another ten!

Good morning, all! No, DR Jose, I'm not trying to piss off Local 802. I'm hired as a consultant for Rodgers & Hammerstein and I'm doing my job. I'm personally offended that 802 has let the producers cut orchestra minimums on Broadway so low that a "Broadway orchestra" is now the equivalent of a bar mitzvah band.
And off my soapbox. My BABES colleague is working this week on on the Lincoln Center production of THE COAST OF UTOPIA so my plans have changed for today. I get to play at home and work on reports. Goody!

Good morning to the Early Boys. That sounds like a country band.
We had a very nice weekend, relaxed and simple. We did have visitors. Anthony's cousin and cousin-in-law (his cousin's wife) came over on Friday and we went to our new favorite Indian restaurant in Chelsea and had a great meal. The staff is very nice and they like us so we got rice pudding and spice tea for dessert for free. And as often happens in Indian restaurants, the bill was surprising cheap for so much good food.
My brother-in-law was in town this past week for a conference and he stopped by on Saturday for a visit.
Sunday was a quiet and uneventful day spent watching old movies, the latest episode of Ugly Betty and two episodes of As Time Goes By.
Yesterday we had a sparkling and witty visit from our resident musical genius, Mr. Larry Moore. We laughed and dished and spoke about friends (and enemies). It was a delightful morning. We then relaxed before entertaining another visitor (all these people want to see our tree). We entertained our dear friend, Randall. We laughed and ate and talked of good times and bad. A good evening was had by all.
This picture is NOT a shot of Randall and me but it is a shot of our friend, Andrea who had stopped by earlier in the week to view our tree. So, in an effort to keep the holidays going through the month of January we present
Ben and Anthony's tree (note the virtual fireplace in the background)!

Re: last night's Golden globes.

I did not get to see the pre-show so the only fashion i saw were from the winners and the presenters.
From what i did see my favorite dress was jennifer lopez's long black number. I also thought that reese witherspoon's short yellow dress was sweet. And vanessa williams looked really nice (except i did not like her bushy hair).
As for the awards, i really liked that the cast of Ugly Betty won for best show. IT is a really good show and they were all so excited. I was also happy that America Ferrera won for Betty. All the other women are good. But this is betty's first year and she really seems quite different from her character.
Other winners i loved: Meryl streep (she's just so gracious), Helen Mirren (same for her), Jennifer hudson (very happy for her), Dreamgirls winning best movie, kyra sedgwick (love her).
One thing that i don't like is that for the tv awards the supporting actors for series are mixed with the miniseries. The miniseries always seem to win and it's really not fair to lump them together.
As for the show I thought the cecile b demille award just went on forever. That was the only part i tuned out. IT was like 30 minutes and just went on and on.
I also was a bit disappointed that the show started right at 8pm. I wish nbc had done some red carpet. Or at least when they were showing everybody at the beginning SHOW THEIR DRESSES. i don't want to see people's faces.

Well, it is the Golden Globe Awards... Not the First Awards Show of Awards' Season Fashion Show. ;)
In any case...
Did any of the cable networks have a Red Carpet pre-show this year?
-
I watched just a little this-a and a little that-s of the GG.

DR ELMORE - I think the TOP CHEF judge you are talking about is Food & Wine magazine editor Gail Simmons. 8)

There is a non-chef related elimination this week, if the promos are not misleading - and some boards seem to think it concerns a prank and Marcel's hair and Cliff. We shall see tomorrow night. ;D

Is that woman hostile or what? I love the show, although I think PROJECT RUNWAY is more fun.
-
PWOJECT WUNWAY is a LOT more fun. And after TOP CHEF there is another similar show DESIGN CHALLENGE or something that puts interior designers up against each other.....that might be fun. I see a pillow fight!!
I really like Marcel and Ilan - it is just crazy that people like Betty on TOP CHEF and Angela on the last WUNWAY thought they went as far as they did on their meager talents, it's just that more talented people made bigger mistakes. Both of them should have been gone WEEKS before they actually were.
-
Maybe I will go see DREAMGIRLS tomorrow afternoon.
-
There are a couple....well ONE....actor in it that I really don't like, but maybe the rest of the movie will make up for him.
-
I have to agree with the reviewer who wrote (and I thought this from the time I bought the Cast Album a LONG time ago) - for a musical about a specific time in MUSIC - the songs themselves were not representative of era OR the genre. And in fact a lot of them were VERY ordinary.
-
As for the Topic of the Day...
"Barber - Knoxville: Summer of 1915", Dawn Upshaw, soprano - And even though there are some other selections on this disc, I'd be very happy with just the Barber. Although, the Menotti and Stravinsky would get semi-regular listens too.
"Beethoven - The Complete Sonatas" - Richard Goode, pianist - Which reminds me, he owes me a coaching.
"Fauré: Mélodies" - Gérard Souzay, baritone; Elly Ameling, soprano; Dalton Baldwin, piano.
Sunday in the Park with George - OCR
"Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Harold Arlen Songbook" - Ella Fitzgerald (with those amazing Billy May arrangements and orchestrations).

James Taylor - "Greatest Hits"

"Brahms: The Piano Concertos; Fantasien, Op. 116" - Emil Gilels, piano; Berlin Philharmonic; Eugen Jochum, conductor.
"Ravel: The Complete Works for Solo Piano" - Walter Gieseking, piano.

Tuesday morning greetings. The big mystery today is: Will there be AV capability in the Main Library Auditorium by 1:30pm. That's the start time for the January edition of Grantseeking Basics, for which I need PowerPoint and an internet connection. The Geniuses have ONLY known about this since 'way before Christmas. They're working on Plan C (Plans A and B having failed already this morning) as I type.

DR GINNY - I feel your pain.
Since the genius took over the Theatre website - only ON the condition that ALL information be posted in a timely manner (he's is using a Web Designer software that I don't have) - grrrrrrrrrrr.
No updates since December 6 - and there are a LOT of things that have to be up NOW. Including print media pointing to the website for further info...that isn't there! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

DR Jennifer, I agree with you about the supporting TV awards for the Globes. It does seem like a hodgepodge of nominees from movies, miniseries, comedy and drama series all lumped together. Occasionally, a TV series person will win; Sandra Oh won the first year of GREY'S ANATOMY's eligibility, and Kim Cattrall won once for SEX & THE CITY, but ordinarily, you're correct, the series actors are at a disadvantage.
I guess because they already have SO many categories separating comedy/musical actors from drama actors in both TV and films, it's just too crowded as it is.
As for the DREAMGIRLS mini-sweep, that's the way it goes some years even at the Oscars. Some years, a lot of movies divide up the spoils. Doesn't mean the movies are less deserving, just that there are films of equal quality vying for the same prizes. (The only other show of any kind of the night that won three was HBO's ELIZABETH I. Nothing else won more than two.)
A few Oscar examples: 1976 - ROCKY won a total of 3 awards including Best Picture; NETWORK and ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN each won four awards.
2004 - MILLION DOLLAR BABY won four awards including Best Picture; THE AVIATOR won five total awards.
2005 - Best Picture winner CRASH won three awards. BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN won three awards. MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA won three awards; KING KONG won three awards.
-
Top of the Mornin' to Ye, DR Elmo. I'm off!
-
As for the TV awards from last night, I really couldn't fault them. I thought a couple of nominees didn't deserve their spots (BIG LOVE, for example, instead of DEADWOOD or DEXTER).
But how GREAT for Kyra Sedgwick and America Ferrerra! I was very pleased for them, and happy that UGLY BETTY got recognized. GREY'S ANATOMY had a fabulous second season, and it was a toss-up for me whether it won or '24.' Since '24' won the Emmy, it's fine with me that GREY'S won this time out.
-
DR JRand - Don't even get me started on webmasters ::)
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
-
I have only the three CBS comedies from last night to watch today, so I should be able to squeeze in a movie before the start-up of AMERICAN IDOL tonight.
I know the auditions rounds garner some of the show's highest ratings as people tune in to see the truly bad, delusional folks who think they can sing. I have to say that the audition rounds are the most tedious for me, and I don't always watch them completely. I much prefer the show once the real talent gets to Hollywood, and the elimination rounds begin.

What a wonderful day to be alive...especially if you are Helen Mirren!
-
Did anyone who watched the Golden Globes notice that Brad Pitt looks "different" in some way? Has his face filled out a tad? Are his eyes somehow more puffy? Or squintier?
-
Are they freaking kidding us with that comedy actor award for Alec Baldwin?
-
The day is a bit warmer than the past several. I couldn't see my breath while I was outside.
That's a sign.
-
We may get some rain showers this e'en.
-
What a wonderful day to be alive...especially if you are Helen Mirren!
Isn't that the truth!
She won last year's Emmy for ELIZABETH I.
She's the odds-on favorite to win this year's Best Actress Oscar.
She'll be the frontrunner for this year's Emmy for PRIME SUSPECT.
-
Are they freaking kidding us with that comedy actor award for Alec Baldwin?
He's the best thing about 30 ROCK and giving one of the drollest, most enjoyable performances I've seen on TV in awhile. I would have picked Steve Carrell (who won last year), but I had no problem with Alec winning.
(The Globes often favor new shows over old favorites.)
-
I caught up on some of my recorded shows from last week.
"Smallville" was fun, if a bit of a stall in the ongoing story about the formation of the Justice Leage. Just more "Lana still loves Clark" dramaturgy. Ho-hum.
"Supernatural" resonated greatly because Jared Padelecki turned in a very strong performance. It was all the more noticeable because co-star Jensen Ackles was in the background...and his dour one-notedness didn't bring the proceedings to their usual halt-go-halt-go-halt!
And then there was "The Ghost Whisperer" -- and what a strong, emotional and gutsy entry this show was in that series: the ghost of a soul that had a tortured recall of several prior lives. And that soul found itself set for another incarnation. Melinda rightly grasped that the soul was about to be reborn, but did not guess who the mother was. The resolution, and the sacrifice, I found to be very moving. There's more to this storyline of "not being ready to have a child" and it may end badly for one of our characters.

I'm off to take care of some house chores before ssettling in for lunch.

The best thing about crap, huh! Well...I see....
I didn't know you were a regular viewer.

I do not like smilies. I would like to think that what I write is clear enough without the addition of little icons that spell it out for the unsubtle.

I've gotten to the point where I'd rather watch dust motes float by from the glow of my fireplace than to watch a show that disappointed me the first time I saw it.
Of course, I watched more of "Joey" than I should have...
But, perhaps I'm too critical.

Boy, that Tom Hanks.
First he outs his high school drama teacher when he accepts an award for "Philadelphia."
Now he's throwing Warren Beatty's "balls" into the air, over and again, for the C.B. DeMille award last night.
It makes me wonder why all the fuss about a Janet Jackson breast shot in a world where nude statues proliferate in art museums...where everyone is welcome.

Oh i loved this episode too. It was so different and so completely moving. Although i did not really get why he was able to choose to go into the light and not be reborn. IF he had gone into the light previously (didn't he say that or was it simply that he saw it but did not go into) then why would him going this time mean he would not be reborn.
I wonder if they will have melinda get pregnant in the near future. I thought it was a very interesting way to have her agree she was ready.

SPOILER
The issue was this: He had gone into the light and had seen many things he'd done that hurt other people, and he had been horrified by (or frightened of) what he saw. He then found himself back in the world, but as a ghost or spirit.
What saved him was overhearing the dicussion between Melinda and her husband. His wanting a child, and her being willing to give him one even when she wasn't sure the timing was right, was -- as he told her --the first time he'd ever witnessed anyone doing anything so generous for a loved one. That, and the fact that he told her he wouldn't fight being born again if she was to be his mother, brought the light. And Melinda, realizing that he finally had the opportunity to move on, rather than try another lifetime, told him he should go.
She only wanted one thing from him, and that was for him to tell his sister how he felt about her. As you may recall, the sister said he could be very selfish, and that she never knew if he appreciated anything she had done for him...but that he could be so charming and lovable when he was happy that she hoped he'd one day realize how much she loved him.
The result for Melinda and hubby, of course, was that she turned out not to be pregnant. This topic has been brought up before in this season, and I'm not certain what the writers/producer (i.e, Love Hewitt) will do to reconcile it.
I greatly fear they're going to kill off another key character before this season ends.

Isn't that the truth!
She won last year's Emmy for ELIZABETH I.
She's the odds-on favorite to win this year's Best Actress Oscar.
She'll be the frontrunner for this year's Emmy for PRIME SUSPECT.
I agree MattH. She had had a great year and she is an excellent actress.

Muslim ladies down under are finally making a splash — thanks to a new bathing suit known as the "burqini."
The Christian Science Monitor reports that the two-piece spandex ensemble is allowing young Muslim Australians to train to become lifeguards at Sydney's famed Bondi Beach.
"Normally, I'd wear cotton trousers and a top but they get very heavy in the water," said Mecca Laalaa, a trainee for Surf Life Saving Australia. "This meets our cultural requirements."

I'm up, I'm up. Got up just before nine, and have been answering e-mails. Since the Skinner/Ripley discs hadn't arrived that was my first. Well, they did arrive and she put them in the one place I didn't look - not any of the three places I did tell her to leave them in. I tell ya. Now I can ship those out.

Have you disvoered the Post Office's new Flat Rate Priority Mail (http://reviews.ebay.com/Flate-Rate-Priority-Mail-3-5-days-Shipping-with-USPS_W0QQugidZ10000000000124100)?
A whole shoe-box full of stuff, no weight limit, for $8.10
USPS Flat Rate Priority Mail (the eBay 'Standard Flate rate Shipping' is not necessarily Priority mail; always ask the seller exactly what kind of mail their 'Flate Rate' shipping entails.)
The US Postal Service Flat Rate Box comes in two sizes.
The largest (perfect-for-D&D-manuals-and-larger-boxed-sets, and heavy books; the photo shows the capacity; that's 11 pounds-worth of books!!) size is a robust 12x4x14,
costs a flat $8.10 to anywhere in the US, including AK, HI, Guam, APOs in Korea, Germany, Iraq, etc.,
and has unlimited weight within the restrictions of package integrity!
The boxes are free and the post office will even deliver large orders to your house or business, at no charge.
They're super-easy to pack, label and mail, because of the box construction, flat $8.10 fee, and the fact that they're Priority Mail 3-5 days delivery and so take the Priority Mail labels.
There's really no better substitute, especially with the low shipping price.

The Order Free Boces on line works-they delivered me ten of the shoe boxes and ten of the shirt boxes - no charge!

What's this "put your left foot in" business?

der Brucer - I've been using Flat Rate boxes since the beginning of Kritzerland - they're wonderful. However, you can only fit about thirty five CDs in the big long box, and you can't fit many more into the square box - the amazon order is for close to 100 CDs and they get confused if you split it into several boxes. So, via Fed Ex ground it will cost about twenty bucks, so even if I was able to split the amazon order into three flat rate boxes it's still cheaper via Fed Ex ground. UPS for the same shipment of 100 discs would be over $100 for GROUND!!!
-
I must now drive to the Dale of Glen, after which I shall return, jog, and then package up the orders.

I discovered something interesting about Flat Rate cartons from the USPS: it may be a flat rate of $8.10, but if you're sending a priority package that might only cost you $6.10 in a flat rate carton, you're giving the Post Office $2.00 to their advantage. A customer and I learned this over the holiday at one of the Post Office's automated service centers.

DR Miss Karen, have fun!
My DR Elmo - As much fun as a meeting can be...but I did get the rest of the costumes dismantled and put away -- except for all the whites, which made the trip home with me for a good washing (happy, happy, joy, joy -- I like washing stuff about as much as cleaning the house...oh, to be BK and have an evil-eyed person to be my slave labor...)...
-
And then there was "The Ghost Whisperer" -- and what a strong, emotional and gutsy entry this show was in that series: the ghost of a soul that had a tortured recall of several prior lives.
AARRGGHH!! I THOUGHT that I had set my DVR to record this...but I didn't! I actually didn't record the last two episodes. :P

I've gotten to the point where I'd rather watch dust motes float by from the glow of my fireplace than to watch a show that disappointed me the first time I saw it.
Of course, I watched more of "Joey" than I should have...
But, perhaps I'm too critical.
I look on it simply as a matter of to each his own.

Please tell me this is some sort of joke (and sick one at that...): Donald Trump is going to get a Hollywood Star?! Nooooooooo!! Quick, let's start a letter campaign to Johnny Grant in protest.
Actually, I think that pretty much anyone can get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. According to the official Hollywood Chamber of Commerce website (http://www.hollywoodchamber.net/icons/history.asp), the criteria for Star on the Walk of Fame includes:
1. Professional achievement
2. Longevity of five years in the field of entertainment
3. Contributions to the community
The recipient must agree to attend the dedication ceremony.
In case of a fan nomination, a letter of agreement must be sent by celebrity management.
And the sponsorship fee is only $15,000.
The Walk of Fame recipients for the year 2007 are:
MOTION PICTURES
Michael Caine, Matt Damon, Lauren Shuler Donner, Jamie Foxx, John Goodman, Michelle Pfeiffer and director Robert Altman.
TELEVISION
Erik Estrada, Kiefer Sutherland, Jerry Stiller, Barbara Walters and producer Dick Wolf.
RECORDING
Mariah Carey, Sean “Diddy” Combs, The Doors, Crystal Gayle, Tim McGraw, Leann Rimes and Shania Twain.
LIVE THEATRE/LIVE PERFORMANCE
Sir Tim Rice and Lily Tomlin.
RADIO
Rodney Bingenheimer and Stu Nahan.

I got a surprise when I settled in to watch last night's CBS comedies. First, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER was a rerun from earlier this season. At first I thought I'd watch it, but then I heard the mailman drop some boxes on the front porch, so I figured some new Blu-ray discs had arrived, and I was correct. So, in order to squeeze in a movie this afternoon, I only watched shows I hadn't seen already.
-
Is anyone doing a CAST ALBUM of the revival of "THE APPLE TREE?"
-
CBS did present a new episode of THE CLASS, and it was one of the funniest of the season. Several classmates are starting to hang out more as friends now, so there aren't so many plots going on at once.
Actually, however, I think CBS is more or less burning off the episodes of THE CLASS it has, and I don't see it returning next season. In a few weeks, RULES OF ENGAGEMENT will begin in the 9:30 slot, and CBS is moving OLD CHRISTINE to the 8:30 slot while the new comedy tries out behind TWO AND A HALF MEN. If it does any kind of ratings at all, I suspect CBS will leave OLD CHRISTINE at 8:30.
-
OLD CHRISTINE did have its funniest episode of the season, but there were some good laughs as Christine tried to party with her brother and was totally out of place.
-
Thanks for the "Walk of Fame" information George. anyone can buy "fame" it seems! Sort of lessens the tribute to real "stars".

For my Blu-ray movie of the afternoon, I chose BLAZING SADDLES. Warners struck this high def disc from the new transfer it produced for the film's anniversary DVD release a couple of years ago.
The main titles were gorgeous, very three dimensional looking (and the title song in 5.1 Dolby Digital Plus was superb.) But, I have to admit, my heart sank a little with the first shot looking like an ugly, grainy, noisy mess. However, immediately after that, the grain and noise went away, and I was left with a strikingly clear, clean, beautiful picture with strong color. (Only a couple of what appeared to be stock shots looked blown up to fit the Panavision frame.) Seeing it look this good really increased my enjoyment of this comedy, one I hadn't watched in many years.
-
I like your choices Karen, I also like Van Morrison, Sheryl Crow, Enya and Nora Jones.
Ahhhhhh, Van, my fav -- Tupelo Honey, Wild Night, Domino, Moondance, Into the Mystic, Wavelength, Brown-Eyed Girl, Crazy Love -- oh, have you heard the CD he did with the Chieftains "Irish Heartbeats"? -- Star of the County Down. And check out John Mellencamp's version of Wild Night -- it's on his "Dance Naked" CD. I think I like it even more than Van's version (oh, strike me down, blasphemer). My music tastes are most eclectic -- I love it all -- so that's why I couldn't just stick to 10 CDs. And on any given day, it might be 10 different ones.

I also watched the "making of" documentary on the disc. Nice to hear about the genesis of the film.
-
DR DakotaCelt,
You asked last night about the Audrey Hepburn Collection on DVD. I could be mistaken, but I THINK the DVD of BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S that is part of that set is the older DVD transfer that's darker and contains dirt and debris in the print they used for the transfer.
I mean, if you don't have the film any more on VHS, the disc is fine as a substitute (and it's going to look better than tape regardless of which DVD version it is), but I did want to caution you about that. The older transfer doesn't have the special features on it that the newer one does.

I sense "authority issues" here 8)
Perhaps some military training would help :)
der Brucer
You are indeed wise, oh great der Brucer. I do have authority issues, although I like to think when it comes to music, it's just that I have eclectic tastes so I'm unable and unwilling to narrow it down to only 10 favorites. And, trust me, military training would be the worst possible treatment. Oil and water -- why, I'd be dishonorably discharged before I even hit the barber's seat for that buzz cut.... :P
-
Whelp, enough chit-chat -- and I see once again that Elmo popped in and out without so much as a "how do you do" to me -- plus the dryer just dinged or pinged -- whatever that sound is -- and unlike all of you who can post, watch DVDs and TV shows, write books, mail packages, and eat sandwiches with Russian dressing all at the same time, I can only do one thing at a time, and for now that's laundry. Adieu sweet princes and princesses.

Back from Fed Ex and the post office and some other errands and I'm all caught up. Whew!

I'm eating tuna sandwiches for my meal o' the day and I don't care who says boo about it.
-
Haven't decided whether to jog or not - they're shooting some stupid TV show or movie along my route and I will not change my route.
-
Perhaps this afternoon I'll give a jog a whirl.
And I have to say again, if there are stupider drivers than those in LA, I have yet to meet them. LA drivers have their heads in the clouds - they simply have no idea where they're driving, how they're driving, or even why they're driving, other than they like to be seen in those humungous vehicles they drive. And I could have sworn a law was passed that made the use of cell phones in cars illegal - or did someone give me some false information?
-
I also noticed a brand spanking new restaurant around the corner - called Tommy Ray's - already had a nice number of people inside - looks like yet another trendy "grill" as in Daily Grill. I suppose I'll give it a try one of these fine days.

The temperature has dropped drastically. It is freezing in this apartment. Perhaps winter will settle in for a while now.

And I could have sworn a law was passed that made the use of cell phones in cars illegal - or did someone give me some false information?
Yes, but....
CA CONSUMER INFO (http://www.calphoneinfo.ca.gov/advisories/092106_cellanddrivinglaw.htm)
New California law banning use of hand-held cell phones while driving takes effect July 1, 2008
Starting July 1, 2008, it will be illegal to drive in California while talking on a cell phone unless you use a hands-free device, like an earpiece that plugs into the phone or a wireless earpiece. If you have a walkie-talkie feature on your cell phone, you can use that while driving until July 1, 2011. But after 2011, you will need to use a hands-free device.
Under the new law, if you are caught driving while holding a cell phone to your ear, you will be fined $20 the first time, and then $50 every time after that. If you were using your cell phone to call 911, however, you will not be fined. Cell phone fines will not affect your driving record.

Interesting "American Idol" notes:

$5,000 Reward Offered in Sexual Attack of Pit-Bull Puppy in New Jersey (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,243998,00.html)
Tuesday , January 16, 2007
A $5,000 reward is being offered in the search for a suspect Tuesday in a sexual assault of a 10-month-old pit-bull puppy in New Jersey.
Police discovered the dog, apparently sodomized by a local resident, Tuesday and notified the Associated Humane Societies of Newark.
…
…two women witnessed a man having intercourse with the dog but refused to get involved.

Been a little stressed. I've got school, appointments, work, & Bedu passed away from pneumonia. I've been online, but haven't been to any of my forum hangouts, not even Chris Rankin's, where I'm a mod.
Thanks to Larry for checking in on me again. I promise I'll visit regularly again when things slow down.

Hmmm... I see to remember being taken to task earlier for a similar comment :-\

July of 2008??? Only in LA. So, for the next year-and-a-half these incompetent LA drivers get to continue to endanger, maim, and kill people because they cannot stay off their assinine cell phones - have I got that right? Because when they're on their assinine cell phones, they are killing machines - they have no clew where they're going, how they're driving, what lane they're supposed to be in and not only that, they don't give a crap because it's all about them and their inability to sit anywhere without TALKING to someone.
Then, in July of 2008, nothing will change because the LA driver who gets fined will simply laugh every time and pay the ridiculous 20 or 50 bucks. They don't and won't give a crap about that either - chump change to these spoiled creeps in their SUVs. And they'll pay their kids' fines, too, and laugh while they're doing it. You know what a fine is? $200. That would, at least, make people stop and think about it. And if the fine were $500, maybe it would work. If it were $1000, no one would be on their cells. Of course, to me, allowing hands-free devices is equally as bad - because it's not the holding of the cell phone, it's the not paying attention to the driving because they're having a delightful conversation with someone and are off in some world other than being a careful driver. So, there will continue to be accidents, ruined lives, and death because of the entitled, selfish cretins who MUST BE CONNECTED 24 hours a day.
End of rant.

Glad to see you, Singing Nymph. I'm so sorry to hear about Bedu.

Man, I was on a tear, wasn't I? I'm so annoyed now I shall go buy a drumstick (not chicken - ice cream) and I don't care who says boo about it.

Miss Karen, I’m sorry to say it is only random ringing. Just now it was constant ringing & I had to move the bell. Sherlock kept ringing the bell for attention. Very cute, however we are a bit upset at him right now.
Unbeknownst to us he got hold of a roll of toilet paper & destroyed it. Our concern is that he ate the entire cardboard roll inside. I can’t find it anywhere.
To make matters worse he grabbed a hunk out of the plastic grocery bag I was holding. Just when we thought he was going to exchange it for a treat he bolted & unfortunately ate it.
Now of course, familiar as we are with all the horror stories, we are very concerned about him

I checked out the website of Tommy Ray's - just another trendy crap place designed to be a hangout for the wealthy Studio City resident, hopefully in television or films. When I read a mission statement that begins, "We felt empowered" I know I'm in the company of people who only have the ability to talk and live in current lingoland. Therefore, I cannot imagine their food being anything other than what is hip and trendy, and therefore I will not patronize the jernt. When I see the constant use of the word "aioli", a word that until one year ago I never saw on a fershluganah menu, then I know what I'm in for. The menu is loaded with words like that - hooey. Check it out at tommyrayscafe.com - it is to laugh.

This morning, the snow started falling at my place at around 5. So, when I left for work, there was just enough dusting of snow to cover the ice and allow me to get out of the parking lot easily. Unfortunately, when I came home; the three extra inches of snow that fell after I left for work, made the parking lot the nastiest it has been in days.
I got stuck going down to the parking spot, I got stuck trying to get back out of the parking spot, and I finally managed to rock my car back and forth enough to get it into a parking space, although not mine. But there is no way I am getting my car back out tomorrow morning, so I called work and left word that I wasn't coming in tomorrow. It is suppose to freeze again tonight, but then tomorrow everything is expected to start melting.
Damn! What a long way around, just to say I'm snowbound.
-
Today at 1:00 I left for a doctor’s appointment in Medford, about half an hour away, less if I’m rushing. When I left there were a few, and I mean few, snow flurries. While most the year the weather in Ashland is clearer & nicer than Medford, they rarely get snow when we have it. To my amazement I found myself driving into a decent amount of snow and slippery roads.
I attempted to get off at the first Medford exit only to find flares and an overturned car. Moments later a car spun out of control two cars in front of me. Fortunately the few cars on the road at that moment were moving very slowly & the car had plenty of room to turn around and continue in the right direction.
I was relieved to take the next exit. With difficulty I turned left to head for my appointment, saw the Ashland sign & just got right back on the freeway. The exit has a good, slightly uphill, curve to it and I felt relieved to make it onto the freeway, several cars didn’t.

Interesting "American Idol" notes:
The producers say that of all the "audition" shows, the one EVERYone should watch is the one from Seattle on Wednesday night. Apparently, it's the most appalling display of non-talent, tackiness and side-splittingly unbelievable auditions the show has ever had.
Sounds like MY kind of show!
Paula Abdul appeared on one of the local talk shows the other day. Everyone was hoping she would explain what made the Seattle auditions so awful. Sadly, Ms. Abdul was too drunk, or too high, or just too out of it to understand the questions the hosts were trying to ask.
You would think if her people were too busy to pay attention to her behavior; that, at least, the producers of AI would keep a little tighter gag on that woman. It was really an embarrassment.
-
Hmm, you might try mouthwash!

LOL TCB!!
-
TCB-I’m glad you made it home okay.
I obviously made it home. My car barely made it up our road. It didn’t make it up our driveway & slid a good distance back down before stopping. It’s now sitting there until tomorrow.
Fortunately, if the plastic doesn’t pass as it should, tonight won’t be the time for an emergency trip to the vet.

I called Keith to let the doctor’s office know I wouldn’t be there. He mentioned he was concerned I was using the cell phone. No problem, I was using my new Bluetooth wireless & both hands had a good grip on the steering wheel. Such a good grip the entire time my arms are now sore. ;D

Thanks elmore. Me too. I am sure that Dakota Celt and a few others would laugh at the eight inches of snow that we currently have on the ground, but we are not equipped to deal with this much snow. I believe the city of Tacoma probably has fewer snowplows than they have city councilmen; and neither is very effective.

In other news...

A. The law is a CA law, not an LA law.
B. ThePepperdine Graphic (http://graphic.pepperdine.edu/perspectives/2006/2006-09-28-cellphone.htm) agrees with you:
Cell phone bill must expand
Scott Miller
Perspectives Assistant
After six years of trying, California Sen. Joe Simitian, D — Palo Alto, finally got his anti-cell-phone-while-driving bill, SB1613, passed (effective July, 2008), with Gov. Schwarzenegger supporting the passage. However, the bill still allows hands-free set ups for drivers.
…
The real threat of talking while driving is not the popular misconception that the driver needs both hands on the wheel — it is that talking in itself distracts the driver. It creates a cognitive distraction from driving that other tasks do not require, i.e., changing the radio station and even having conversations with other passengers.
It creates a tunnel vision effect, where the driver, although looking at the road, will not register much of what they see, according to drivenowchatlater.com. Studies have shown that distractions do not cease with hands-free gadgets.
In 2004, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)and the University of Iowa tested whether hands-free devices yield safe drivers. The study found that they do not.
Hands-free equipment caused as much of a distraction, if not more, because of the increased time required to dial a phone call, as compared to a hand-held phone.
…
Long have hand-held cell phones been the scapegoat of those looking to blame high accident rates on something. But it is time to start seriously looking at, and contemplating, the other factors of this problem, such as the misconception about hands-free set-ups being a viable solution to the problem.
Let’s stop kidding ourselves into thinking that hand-held phones are the only problem.
Take it to the next level and do what a government is supposed to do, protect innocent citizens from the others who are irresponsible and endanger everyone else.

DR Jose, when I downloaded the recording to my iTunes, I deleted the "Mirabai songs." Oy!
I will sometimes go back and give the "Mirabai Songs" another chance. I mean, if Dawn Upshaw likes them... Well... I'm still not too keen on them. Or any other music by John Harbison. I just seem to hear too much of his "method" - it seems academic to me.
One of the first concerts I went to at the Kennedy Center featured Vladimir Ashkenzy playing Brahms' First (or maybe it was the Second) Piano Concerto. Alas, the way the concert was programmed, the featured soloist was featured after the intermission. So... They were premiering a new work in the first half... "Ulysses' Bow"... by John Harbison. Needless to say, I thought it was a very long first half.
-And when I was managing the sheet music store, all the Harbison new issues that came in would sit in the bins for years(!). :-\

You would really laugh at the small amount of snow that caused such a mess today. I am definitely experienced at driving in the snow & while we didn’t have much, it sure was slippery. And those other cars going out of control were scareing me.
I did pass a big deicer truck on the freeway, at least they get them out quickly here. It was funny how many cars were content to stay behind the truck.

In weather like we're having, I'm quite fortunate in that I (now) live so close to where I work. ;D But tonight, I start rehearsals for a local production of Sean O'Casey's "Juno and the Paycock!" I'm playing Captain Boyle, Juno's husband and perpetual ne'er-do-well. Another actor in the show is the guy who played the Indian Chief in Cannibal: The Musical, but he doesn't have a car. I said that I'd pick him up tonight and drive him to rehearsal and, if necessary, home again (yes, I'm a nice guy). There are three pieces of classical music that really choke me up:
Rachmanioff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini
Beethoven's Ninth Symphony
And the Franck
I need Larry Moore to explain the fascinating antiphonal orchestrations that make the orchestra sound like the world's largest pipe organ.

All right, I'll get the Franck in the car for our trip. I don't think I'm familiar with it yet.
The Beethoven and the Rachmaninoff also go in the car.
But this means adding Beethoven's Sixth (my favorite) and ALW's Variations (same source material as the Rach). Just for balance.

Aioli has been around for quite a long time, and was paired with dishes appropriate to this garlicy mayo. Looking over the menu, however, I didn't see anything that was really "trendy" - it was more trend-following and commonplace. The truly trendy sets trends. (And their aioli probably has very little garlic in it - it might offend! :o)
(Shocking, Charles, simply shocking!)
I cannot imagine anyone asking their waitron to "hold the aioli." It just doesn't have the same zip, as a phrase.

Recorded ADVANCE TO THE REAR off of TCM last week. It was all I hoped it would be. Quality comedy, Stella Stevens looking good. Glenn Ford gives a stellar comic performance. Kind of cool and casual.
Anyways, while recording that the VCR (outmoded technology, I know) was left on and also recorded the bizarre film DON'T WORRY, WE'LL THINK OF A TITLE, which is a crazy curio. It seems to be a vanity production by Morey Amsterdam and features him mugging and telling just the most corny jokes while Rose Marie plays his straight man. Richard Deacon is also on hand and several other odd cameos including Moe from the Three Stooges actually playing a character other than Moe. Worth a look even though it is of pretty low quality.
-
I just realized how early I have to get up tomorrow. I have something to do before the rehearsal.
-
Melvyn Douglas is also quite funny in ADVANCE TO THE REAR. The movie should have been in color though. I was always curious as to how they would use the songs Randy Sparks wrote for the film. He clearly did a lot of work, but a lot of stuff the New Christy Minstrels recorded got left out. It says his music was adapted by Hugo Montenegro. The song "Today," the big hit from the movie is not heard in its entirety.
-
I, too, have to be up a bit earlier tomorrow that usual. The two-hour audition session I got booked for that was originally scheduled from 11:00-1:00, will now be starting at 10:30 and ending at 3:00. *Ka-ching$ My new shelves have now been paid for! ;) In any case...
This will be for a "new" musical, and the casting agent sent me the music that I'll be playing tomorrow. And since I don't have my keyboard up here currently, I'm going to need to head in a little before to get the music under my fingers. It's not hard, just new.

Oh...
And the preview of tomorrow night's AI from Seattle... I'm not sure I can subject myself to that again. But, alas, I probably will. :-\

Amazon is actually running a deal now for all five seasons of '24' for $124, so for fans who want to relive some of the shows great seasons, that's VERY inexpensive, and I'd say at their best (seasons 1, 4, and 5), it's superior to any action movie I've seen in the past few years for thrills, surprises, stunts, and acting.

I began my eveing with the Blu-ray version of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE III. As poor as the standard defintion DVD of the movie was (plugged up, pasty color, aliasing abounding particularly in the Vatican scenes with the walls and the steps), the Blu-ray disc is a marvel - beautiful, saturated color, rock solid images without the twitter in the SD version, amazing clarity. You could see the pores in all the actors' faces uin close-up, some make-up for blood and bruises seemed phony because of the increased clarity. Really, a reference quality HD disc.
-
I did watch the two hours of IDOL tonight and I probably will tomorrow, but I'll pick and choose from other auditions. One reason I stuck with it tonight was that nothing new that I watch aired opposite it. L&O: CI and VERONICA MARS were reruns.

Of course, the producers focus on the bizarre and terrible only allowing us an occasional person with some talent.
And there was one contestant, a male voice teacher (green shirt with a soul patch) that Randy took an instant dislike to and was as rude as he's ever been to a contestant. He could sing; yes, his vibrato was a little wide, but they all dismissed him outright as if he couldn't sing at all. Some people got passed through who weren't nearly as good as he was.

I also watched the new episode of DIRT tonight. Add another gay male character to prime time TV (Courtney Cox's brother), and once again, the show didn't shy away from showing him kissing another man (an action movie star in the closet) and the actor going down on his knees to show is the beginning of a sex scene.
I certainly wasn't expecting to see this! I guess I'll keep watching.
-
TOmorrow, I'll have BOSTON LEGAL and SVU to watch before settling in with some DVDs.
I also recorded TRAVELS WITH MY AUNT off TCM today. I haven't seen this movie in years, and I'm looking forward to seeing it tomorrow.
-
Heading off to bed now.
Good night!
-
I feel great except that I've still got my cough from New Year's weekend. I haven't have a cold hang on like this in over ten years.
Did I remember Dr. Jose saying this year's cold has been lasting three weeks to a month for many people?

Yes. Yes, I did.
-
DR FJL - Steve just got over his cold completely. And he got sick the week before Christmas. And Steve's doctor said he had been treating many lingering cases. -This too shall pass.
-
OK... Well, now I'm going to bed.
Once again...
Goodnight.

Just had a lovely visit with my friend M'Lisa and her husband, and their two kids, Caitlyn and Shannon. Caitlyn sang with Jessica Rush on the Stages bonus song. Shannon is a doll - she's doing a book report on Benjamin Kritzer (and is in the middle of Kritzerland right now) and she wanted the CD of the five songs from that book. We laughed and laughed and just when we thought we could laugh no more we laughed again. I shall now try and finish a DVD.
-
But, I doubt I will. I shall try, however.
-
Just found out that my interview with former child star and later character actress Edith Fellows is in the new issue of FILMS OF THE GOLDEN AGE!!! I haven't received my copies yet, but hope they are on the way!
Woohoo...that makes 3 interviews out in publications this month...!!!
Here is Edith in a shot from one of BK's favorite films PENNIES FROM HEAVEN

SOUTHERN VOICE (http://www.southernvoice.com/) is published out of Atlanta and is also the home site for both the New York and Washington Blade. It has news and commentary primarily aimed at a Gay and Lesbian readership - but has good articles on the Arts and dining - particularly in the Atlanta and Washington areas.
