DR Cillaliz - hope you were able to arrange to have them shipped and won't have to carry them on your flight home!

Oh everyone is more than happy to ship the books to you.

Although I don't like the emmense size of this conference, I have to say we get all kinds of goodies for our registration fees and the materials and speakers are very worthwhile

I confess, I've never read a Harry Potter book or seen a Harry Potter movie

I've seen the movies, but I've never read the books...and I work in a library!

Oh, I thought maybe you'd have to pick them up in New York City the weekend of June 30-July 1  ;).

DR Cillaliz - the American Library Association conference I'll be attending in Washington will probably have more than 20,000 in attendance.  It will be my 19th ALA annual; one of my coworkers is going to her first (to receive an award, which is pretty cool) and is totally freaked by the complexity of the scheduling.

DR Cillaliz - your day sounds glorious.  I could use some pampering like that - wonder if I could find some at the library conference that I'm going to in Washington, DC, in about 10 days?

There is too much to do in DC to take the time for a spa.

Been to many conferences - of varying attendance and effectiveness - but none can beat the Annual convention of the Society of Professional Journalists which I help organize for three years....

Balitmore....Miami....Nashville....

Journalists are a different breed of animal entirely.

Today I refilled the magnetic paper clip holder I got at the only ALA I attended with Keith.  I had fun checking out all the new books that hadn’t been released yet, unfortunately there weren’t any freebies of books.

While I was touring the city of New Orleans and its outskirts, everywhere I went there were librarians.  I kept wondering if they were getting any work done.   ;D

When you are in a great city like DC it is going to be difficult to stay in-doors.

Are your evenings free or do you get invited to any functions?

We'll be at the Hampton Inn in Crystal City (near Reagan National Airport).  One of the vendors, ThomsonGale, provides terrific shuttle bus service among all the conference hotels and the convention center.

Our schedule is a 96 page book!

Entertainment? Not really. There was a reception tonight that was not enough food for too many people and a few open bars for about an hour.  There was a pub crawl tonight, but it was pretty much a handful of 20 somethings and I didn't have any interest after having a body wrap.

I'm sure I could find some people going here or there if I wanted to, but frankly, this relaxing stuff is really nice, and I'm happy with it. Oh Saturday night there is a big party over in Downtown Disney.  I'll probably go to that.

So are criminal defense lawyers, they make these immigration lawyers seem like a pretty tame bunch!

I took the shuttle at the ALA once and then walked everywhere or used the streetcar.

DR Jane - I'm too far down the food chain, professionally, to be invited to the parties.  Our first evening, we're having dinner with friends who actually live in NYC, but one of them is a vendor and they'll be in DC for ALA.  On Sunday evening, I'm meeting a couple of my grad school classmates at the University of Michigan reception, where we expect to be the old-timers.  We'll probably go out to dinner after that.

Yup, that I will do.  There are shuttles back and forth to the hotel, which isn't too far away, and the admission is already paid for so, may as well go see it.

Oh....so America chooses the bottom three couples, then the judges pick one girl and one boy from those six....doesn't have to be a couple.

Oh........BUT it is exactly as DR JENNIFER predicted....too many of the contestants this year are of the same discipline....and the couple dancing is NOT their strength.

I agree with one sent home but not the other.
