BK, sorry to hear about the musical, but I'm glad that you feel some relief from the squabbles and headaches and offstage drama that had been occurring.

TOD: The '80s produced some great films, including a few that I return to time and again. "Blade Runner" remains one of the best sci-fi movies I've ever seen (though I didn't like the director's cut that felt obliged to overexplain things to its audience).  I loved "A Christmas Story," "Sixteen Candles," "Spinal Tap" and a slew of Woody Allen films, including "Hannah and Her Sisters," "Radio Days" and "Crimes and Misdemeanors."

Among my favorite foreign films of that era were Bergman's "Fanny and Alexander" and the two-parter, "Jean de Florette" and "Manon of the Springs."

I was not a Tom Cruise fan then. Couldn't get through "Top Gun" on cable, still can't stand movies like that or "Cocktail."

There's a whole lotta 80's movies I could list as favorites!  Woody Allen's output alone would make quite a list of films I like:

STARDUST MEMORIES
A MIDSUMMER'S NIGHT SEX COMEDY
ZELIG
BROADWAY DANNY ROSE
THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO
HANNAH AND HER SISTERS
RADIO DAYS
NEW YORK STORIES
CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS

And also his odd but still intriguing dramas
SEPTEMBER
ANOTHER WOMAN

The common denominator in this list?  Mia Farrow.  She was either a dynamic muse of his work or she just happened to hook up with him at an incredibly creative time in his life.  We'll probably never learn the truth about that from either of them...

What can I tell you?

A lot of films that many people adore (e.g. OUT OF AFRICA), I find to be boring.

On the other hand, a lot of people think that I have absolutely no taste because I happened to enjoy a movie like NINE.

I guess that's what makes the world interesting.

BTW: I also like RADIO DAYS and two other 1980s movies that I really love are THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO and WITHOUT A CLUE.

I suppose I'm up - will probably go back to bed but was having the oddest dream - what I can remember is that I'd met someone and we'd become slightly randy, and then I was outside the home of where a party was being given and the randy person went off to the bathroom or something.  Meanwhile, I found myself sitting in a white Porsche next to Ed Asner - he was the driver.  We were there very early - eleven o'clock in the morning, and I was surprised we had to sit there until the party started at one.  I told Ed there was a great parking place just ahead.  He just sat there and then someone else took the spot and he said "Oh, well" and turned around and we got another spot - but then the person in the original spot left and we took that.  Then we sat there, and then I was talking to Raquel Welch and we were both telling Teddy stories and that was funny.  Then I was talking to Bea Arthur and Doris Roberts and I kept asking what year it was and saying how good we'd all look later.  That's about all I remember.

I think I ate a little too much garlic last night, too - not having heartburn, but I feel "topped off" - just ate too much food.

Good morning, all! I slept late. Again. I think my body must have needed some time off, and I've been feeling puny most of the weekend. Although I did accomplish a great deal of work, I've been having horrible stomach pains and I need to call my doctor for an appointment.

Today I will answer a few OZ questions, deal with more of THE ROSE OF ALGERIA, and not move too far from the apartment. I received an email from our McGlinnventory paralegal that our DAT player is still in drydock and the rep from Academy Records has not responded to inquiries on when he plans to pick up the ton of LP's he purchased a week ago, so there may be no McGlinn work this week. as soon as the records go, we'll have room to begin the second round of sorting published and manuscript music for the Library of Congress and vendors.

TOD: I always loved one of Richard Lester's last films, FINDERS KEEPERS, with Michael O'Keefe, Beverly D'Angelo, and David Wayne (wish that were on DVD) and MAID TO ORDER, with Ally Sheedy and Beverly D'Angelo, who can do no wrong in my book.

MR BK - the Dream-O-Matic 6000 says that your dream indicates that at this time you value career over personal life although you feel career could be moving a bit faster.  You are comfortable where you are, but moving ahead would also be great.
Your values of beauty are varied but a knockout female will always grab your attention.  You don't always get what you want in a timely manner, but you are patient and will accept it when it finally comes along.

As for the Topic of the Day...

The one movie that comes right to mind is:

"On Golden Pond" - I actually saw it three times in the movie theater.

And upon further reflection:

"Poltergeist"
"The Breakfast Club"
"Cinema Paradiso"
"Raiders of the Lost Ark" - And I LOVED playing that main theme in marching band too!

...Plus a plethora of other movies I know I'm forgetting and/or have already been mentioned.

Back from the tape transfer place - and the good news is that it appears that I will indeed be able to do what I want with a cast album reissue - we haven't actually done the work yet, but it seems like it should work fine.  And so, for your ears only, we will be doing a two CD set of the Original Cast Recording of Promises, Promises.  CD 1 will be the original album mix, which, shockingly, has never been on CD before - yes, there have been two issues of this on CD (Ryko and Varese) but that was a remix that was simply not mentioned anywhere on the packaging.  I never thought that CD sounded right and now I know why.  So, for the first time on CD, the original album mix.  CD2 will be a new mix with - and this is the fun part - all of Jerry Orbach's (and Ed Winter's and A. Larry Haines') pitch problems fixed - if not perfectly, much better than they've ever been.  I am so thrilled to be able to do this, because I have to imagine that Mr. Orbach was probably not happy with the pitch problems - but they only had a day to record and that was that - the old days.  So, we'll see how it goes, but this is potentially very exciting.  Varese, in fact, after promising me they would never do anything B'way related after I left, broke their promise because of greed.  They tried to renew their license, which was up at the end of April.  But I'd already done the deal and they were told "too bad, Kritzerland has it."

Thank you, DR Druxy, for reminding me of "The Stunt Man," which I thought was the 1970s and is one of the best movies I've ever seen, and "A Room With a View," which may not be your cup of tea, but it certainly is mine. I saw it three or four times in the theater and countless times on video/DVD.

I forgot a couple of other all-time favorites: the original "Hairspray," which I may have seen more than 50 times, and "Shoot the Moon" with Diane Keaton, Albert Finney and Dana Hill giving searing performances.

Happy Happy Joy Joy!!

I'm anxious but i'm good. I have 3 other books to read from the library that i've wanted to read.  Plus they have a bunch of movies that have just come in.

Last night I watched AN EDUCATION. Tomorrow i have LOVELY BONES. And then i have to pick up AVATAR and THE YOUNG VICTORIA.

I'm surprised by how many of you are listing "Crimes and Misdemeanors" as one of your favorite films. I thought I was the only one who liked Woody's serious movies, as well as his comedies. The 2005 film, "Match Point" seemed to be a remake of the '80s film, but I actually liked "Match Point" better.

Dan, aren't several of the movies on your "least favorite" major academy awards winners??

I know i reserved it like 4 months ago and i was number 11. So i'm sure there are lots of people who have reserved it since then.  But my library has 6 copies and it is only for my community of like 40 000 people.

What a lovely Freedom Day we had! Here are the things we did not do: we did not go to the new Sea Life aquarium at the mall; we did not see a rattlesnake; we did not ride on the $1.1 billion Sky Train, although we saw where it is being built. We did go for a nice drive and ate too much at an Indian casino buffet, where DR Sandra created a new favorite food: messy tacos. She also enjoyed some chocolate peanut butter cup pie. Hurray for freedom!

I saw the SEX & THE CITY 2 movie and I think that those reviewers were out of their mind.

Anyone who loved the series and loved the first movie will love this movie.  Those grumpy old men who reviewed SATC2 really did their readers a disservice.  I think part of the 2nd movie is knowing the characters though. What they do will not make sense if you do not know about Carrie and Mr. Big. Or about how he walked out on her or what happened in the first movie.  It is basically a continuation of everything that has happened till now.

I thought it was fun and funny. I do think 2 hrs 20 is a tiny bit too long. But the ending was so interesting and there weren't really any parts that i would have wanted to cut.

I think anybody who is a true fan of the show and first movie should definitely see this one.

The female reviewer for ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, who loved SATC gave this film a C-  .   No grumpy old men there.

No it was the pasta that had just started boiling when the power failure happened.  Since I expected the lights to come back on rather quickly the pasta sat in the water for a long time.  I would have used different pasta, but I had used the last box I had.  The pasta tasted rather doughy.

This weekend Jed and I did what we call a Theatrical Double Header.  We saw Harvey Fierstein as Tevye in Fiddler at the Paramount for the matinee, and then we saw an exquisite production of Candide at the 5th Avenue.  Candide was perfectly cast, perfectly staged, and beautifully played by the orchestra.  It was long, I admit, but Jed and I were still annoyed by the jeans wearing couple in front of us grumbling during intermission "13 more songs in the damn second half??  How long to we have to sit here, anyway??"  "I can't tell where one song ends and the next begins, it could be 30 songs for all we know."  "What the hell are they talking about anyway?"  "No idea, dear."  "I should have had a damn beer before this started."
And on in that vein....  *sigh*

The kittens got shots today, and I was informed that the boys are all big enough to be neutered, although Jennifer has to gain another half-pound. They are fixing the boys smaller.

I thought fixing boys when they are too young can lead to FUS (Feline Urinary Syndrome)

I know, but I don't own them.

I'm done with my viewing.  I could watch something else but I'm not in the mood.  I've seen one motion picture on the DVR and several short subjects and am now listening to music.

One of the things about having a huge number of home-grown CDs with unreleased soundtracks is that when you watch a motion picture on the DVR and absolutely love the score, one just goes in the home-grown CD closet and happily finds it.

I wonder if I'll achieve my new plateau this evening or on the 'morrow.

I'd have to make eighteen more postings.  I can probably do that.

That way we'd probably get to page seven and then no one can say we didn't get to page seven and you know that someone would say we didn't get to page seven and this will preclude that.

'Stead of daisies.
I don't know though.
What do you think?..."

Well, we got to page seven.  I suppose that means I'll achieve my new plateau this very evening, and hopefully dear reader George will be here to immortalize it.

I watched tonight's "Glee" and am now watching "America's Got Talent."  America does have some talent.
