Title: THE RITUAL
Post by: bk on May 15, 2012, 01:11:34 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had their ritual achieved, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently having a ritual of their own and their ritual, of course, is not coming home.

Good morning, all! I had a dream involving our DR Ginny last night, but now I cannot for the life of me remember what the dream was about. I slept rather well, although around 3:15 this morning I thought I would never get back to sleep.

I want to leave for Toyland as soon as possible this morning, so I was up really early. Orchestra parts for two more DEAREST ENEMY numbers came in yesterday, and I want to burn them to a disc with all of the others so that Joshie and I can begin printing them. I also have another ROBERTA number to scan and send to my colleague Curtis. Following that, I will bus up to City Center and see Josh. I have a couple of things for him and it will ne nice to catch up; I haven't seen him since the GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES orchestra reading on April 15. I suspect he is pretty busy with prep work fornext week's GPB recording sessions.

After that, I will head to NYPL for some more work on EILEEN. I need to look up the production photos and look at the programs for the original 1917 production.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Vibes of comfort and healing to DR Jane and everyone! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And, please, keep them office vibes coming!
Good morning, world.
So, here it is.  Finally.  The inspiration to end years of procrastination and get me some Cassavetes.  I was immediately attracted to "Husbands" (Bars! Grand Central! Suburbs!) upon stumbling over it on TV many years ago.  Did I say TV?  Did I say years?  DECADES.  Early to mid-1970s.  I wonder what channel would have been running anything like that back then.  Seems pretty remarkable.
Boil your water - if you live in my town.  It seems maintenance at the Morningstar Water Tower let pressure drop below 20 psi, so for cooking and drinking we have to boil our water for one minute.   However since I use bottled water, I will be fine!
 :P  We get that quite frequently, DR JRand, because we live in an older part of town and the infrastructure is aging.  It usually takes me a couple of days after the all-clear to be able to drink the tap water.
I've always been more of a Cassavettes fan than not. Loved "Faces," "Shadows"and "A Woman Under the Influence" possibly the most. Perhaps I just love anything with Gena Rowlands in it.
Now, Henry Jaglom is someone I could never understand. Never found anything remotely appealing in the three or four films of his that I watched, so I stayed away.
Being a writer, I love a tight, well structured and written script, which you don't get in a Cassavettes picture when the actors are allowed to improvise to their heart's content.
But, he was the darling of the critics, so who am I to say?
BTW: I like Ms. Rowlands, too.  I think she is terrific.
John G - I hope you'll give a chance anyway to Mr. Jaglom's JUST 45 MINUTES FROM BROADWAY, which features one of my dearest friends, the talented writer and actress Harriet Schock (best known for writing songs like Ain't No Way to Treat a Lady and Hollywood Town, and also co-starred in Henry Jaglom's exciting but controversial film Irene in Time)
What I Just Learned:
Saturday, May 19th, is International Learn to Fly Day.
Which I did, back in '77-'78, at Van Nuys Airport.  Logged around 270 hours before various and sundry life changes kind of shoved it aside.  But man, I loved it, and still would.  Can't imagine the FAA would approve my vision the way it is now.  Not that I'd even bother trying.  Getting that approval every couple of years was hard enough when I was but a li'l 30-something.
I'm afraid I would get very air sick in a little plane.  Our neighbor build a plane in his garage and it was fun watching the progress.
Maybe you would if you're prone to motion sickness anyway, but most first-timers are surprised to find that flying in a small plane feels very much like it does in a large one, except being a thousand times more fun.  This of course depends on one's being smart enough to fly in appropriate conditions for the plane.  Also, I used to make sure the scaredy-cat sat in front so I could let them get a feel for the controls, which in my own limited experience never failed to completely win them over to it.
Keith & Craig, who was 15 at the time, forced me into getting Echo. I used to joke about that because we were so attached.
I suggested getting Sherlock because Keith really wasn't ready not to have a dog, after all if I wanted a cat we would have gotten one.  Well, I do want one I've just managed to stay firm in my decision, so far anyway.  Since Sherlock was diagnosed I've been craving a kitten.
Wow, that's unusual.  I think.  But what do I know?  I'll get motion-sick if I try to read in a car, no question about that.  Sometimes, at least in the past, just sitting in the back seat on, say, a windy mountain road.  Never air-sick, though, love it too much for that.  Well, maybe if I got SCARED enough....
I only flew in a small plane once. And i hated it so much. I am a bit claustrophobic. And i hadn't been warned in advance that the plane would be small. I really did not like it.
Also, now airlines are supposed to publish the entire price up front including all taxes and fees so they can't say $99 to XXX with the small print saying taxes and fees extra pushing up the cost to hundreds of dollars.
The Social Security website says that you can apply at 61 years and 9 months......that will be May 26.....or can I apply now since we are already into May?
I don't know, not that it matters.  You won't get it any sooner by applying now.
This is true DR JANE.....I filled out the application and it was accepted.....for benefits to start in September.....so we will see in a few days if I did it correctly.
I had an appointment this morning for every woman's 2nd favorite screening.  Richard went along and afterwards we went to scope out the new YMCA that's next to the new hospital.  We're probably going to join when we get back from New York/Washington.  We shopped for some groceries and picked up some library books and now we're in for the day.
Scrolling on the computer or using the old microfilm files too long can give me motion sickness.
I forgot about that.  It was years before I could use a computer.  Even now if Keith is scrolling while I'm looking at the computer I have to close my eyes.
I get dizzy shopping for clothes in places where the display racks move - like the ones suspended on chains.
My annoyance factor is on high at this moment - we are now on version seven of the packaging and it hasn't even gone in for approvals yet - I have informed everyone that when I send this version, it has to go in - period.  This is what happens when there are multiple people involved and used to doing things the way they're used to doing them - but at some point, these kinds of projects become projects where it's not possible to actually make any profit and that's where I put my foot firmly in the ground and don't move it.
What I Just Learned:
Saturday, May 19th, is International Learn to Fly Day.
Which I did, back in '77-'78, at Van Nuys Airport.  Logged around 270 hours before various and sundry life changes kind of shoved it aside.  But man, I loved it, and still would.  Can't imagine the FAA would approve my vision the way it is now.  Not that I'd even bother trying.  Getting that approval every couple of years was hard enough when I was but a li'l 30-something.
That's pretty cool.  My former supervisor's husband took flying lessons years ago, but he had to quit because he had problems with depth perception...something that is needed very much.
And on the very next day..."Next week on the 20th of May, I proclaim 'Liza Doolittle Day."
I just added it to the HHW calendar. :D
Well on top of the bad water - the Polaroid Television gave up the ghost.....so I had to go buy another television.  I got an Emerson 39" HDTV with all the connections I needed and it is now up and running.....we shall see what happens with all the peripherals I also installed.
Congratulations on your new purchase, Jack!
From Bruce:
Quote
Take a break, then get a beautiful new puppy!
After the last two dogs I said no more & it took a year in-between each.  This time Keith agrees.  I still haven't gotten another cat so we shall see.
I am ready to be dogless for the first time in my life after Beegee and Blanche depart.  Betsy is threatening divorce.  (That's nothing new).   ;)
 I remember when Solo passed and my Mom said "No MORE dogs!"  Wisely, I agreed with her but hid my smile because I knew better.  Sure enough about 2 months later Mom was heard to say "I wish we had a dog."  I ignored her.  "I wish I had a dog to keep me company durning the day when your at work".  "No more dogs, you said", I told her.  Then it was, "Let's go to the pound and pick out a dog".  "Just a little one about a year old so we will know how big it will be."  I said "alright".
Well, the pound was closed the day she wanted to go. We had to go to Walmart.  As I was backing the car out of the parking space,  I saw a kid bend over a box and put **something** in the box.  I told Mom there are either kittens or puppies up there.  She asked me to park the car so we could go look.  I warned her, if it was puppies and we looked, we would take and she wanted a dog that was at least a year old so we would know how big it was.  Mom said, "Oh, we just look."   I said "OK" but I knew better.
Sure enough they were puppies and to make a long story short, that how we got Bear.  A five pound puppy that grew into the Great Dane, Lab, Shepard, PONY mix that we both grew to love so much.
If something happens to Sheena and Toby there will be no more dogs.   Well...............maybe just a "little" one.
Last night I watched Stars and Stripes Forever which I hadn't seen since it was presented during the first season of NBC Saturday Night at the Movies.
It was not very good....and Robert Osborne pointed out that Clifton Webb opted to do this film instead of doing THE BAND WAGON at MGM.....Jack Buchanan did the role instead.  Webb's reasoning was that SSF was a starring role....and it certainly was ALL WEBB ALL THE TIME, mostly marching and pretending to lead a band.
What I did notice however, was the the couple who played Mr & Mrs Benjamin Harrison were the same couple who played Mr and Mrs Strauss in TITANIC the very next year.....and that the actor was Roy Gordon who later played the doctor in ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN......
Before we got our first dog we were at a pet store (before we knew what horrors they were) looking at puppies and wanting one desperately.  I asked the older couple next to us why they didn't take the puppy they liked.  The response was they were done having pets.  At the time I couldn't imagine such a thing, now I get it.
For me it is harder not to have a cat than a dog.
Will you be spending much time with your grand dog and grand cat?
If Craig is away we, or one of us, will sleep with them & we will walk Yogi.  Yogi is an "interesting" dog & prefers to stay in his room when Craig is at work.  After Sherlock was diagnosed Craig kept Yogi in his room for Sherlock's comfort.  So far he has continued the practice.  I expect that will change over the weekend.
I like to visit with Kitty but she doesn't snuggle with anyone but Craig.
I'm getting excited about going to Memphis this week.  Cat/house sitter is lined up.  I signed up for a riverboat cruise one night of the meeting. It's a two hour cruise with barbeque, chinese food and live music.  I've never done the paddleboat thing, so I'm looking forward to that.  I think i'm going to try to find time to go to Graceland this time.
I don't think I've ever known it to be so cold in mid May.
So strange.  We've had summer weather for at least 2 months now.
The other day I set the air conditioner. Only 164 more days of summer!
I am also thrilled that the stress level at work is finally getting a lot better.  I'm doing a lot this month to recharge and it starts day after tomorrow.  Since I've been to busy to even spend time catching up and learning, I'm going to enjoy sitting in a class room with no interruptions and just spend time learning.
And, since this is the second trip to Memphis, I know a great place for breakfast, I know where and how to get on the trolleys etc.   I do think I'll head to the World Championship Barbeque cooking contest for the people's choice tasting.  I did it last year and got a really cool certificate in the mail a couple months later that thanked me for being a judge. I'd like another of those to hang in my kitchen.
When I was in college I was working on my hot air balloon pilot license.  I love to fly in balloons.  It's been years now.  I had a friend who owned one and was in the hot air balloon club at the University of Iowa.
I didn't get sick the one time I went in a hot air balloon, at least as long as I didn't look straight down.
I feel so bad for Keith.  As hard as this is for me I think it is twice as bad for him.  I got Sherlock for him, and let him do most of the work.  They bonded from the very first moment they met.
JRand -I had a dream that I was at a sleepover with my cousin and her sister-in law, and her sister-in-laws two daughters -  the sleepover was at my aunt's house - we were all the age we are now although my aunt's house was decorated and it was when I was a child
suddenly a dog came into the room and took my right hand into his mouth (right up to the wrist)  He didn't hurt me but  I was unable to remove my hand from his mouth
and then I woke up
any thoughts?
The page proofs for the book came in tonight. I made it through 20 pages and my brain is giving up on me. I've got through Sunday. Need to finish that, finish my last paper, make it through the food-wine festival this week (only going to give events), work more on Mom's cookbook and do my 9-5 job. Sleep and exercise have been placed on hold.
Finished viewing Shadows, then watched half of another motion picture.  Weird day today, and slightly weird evening.  I think I'll go take a shower and wash it all down the drain.  Not a BAD day, really, but just some weird stuff.  One interesting thing was as I was getting out of my car to go pick up mail I heard a voice say, "Hey, curmudgeon" (I was wearing my curmudgeon cap) - I turned around and it was Vinnie Cirilli.  I realized I haven't seen him in close to five years now.  We had a wonderful chat and he seems happy and looks good.  We're going to have lunch or dinner on Thursday.
I'm now watching "America's Got Talent."  I'm fast-forwarding through all the "get to know the performers" stuff and all the judges' uninteresting banter and just watching the acts.  One new thing that they're doing (aside from having Howard Stern as the new judge) is to broadcast comments from the audience.  It's bad enough that they cut too much to show the audience's reactions...do they really think that the comments add to the experience? :-\
