Live ballet performances:
I cannot remember all the ballets I have seen, but I've seen the New York City Ballet's Nutcracker at least four times live and a lot more on video.
I've seen the Joffrey Ballet perform Petruchka, The Nutcracker, and the minstrel ballet Cakewalk, with Hershy Kay's wonderful score based on Gottschalk.
I cannot remember who performed the Gilbert & Sullivan ballet Pineapple Poll, but I'm thinking it was the Joffrey Ballet.

I am really dragging around this morning. Around 7:20 I lay down for a bit, then finally dragged myself out of bed, made it, did the kitty cleanup, and, after I take the junk to the basement and pick up the mail, I don't plan to move far from my bed today.

Dynagroove had nothing to do with the recording itself - it happened in the mastering and replication stage - the tapes are all fine, which is why the CD counterparts are mostly incredible.

I'd say I was up, but I'm going back to bed since I've had less than three hours of sleep - the McDonald's just wasn't very good and it made me a bit nauseous and I don't sleep well and I'm also down to my last two Pepcids.

TOD 1:
When I was a freshman in high school, the Louisville Ballet got Mikhail Baryshnikov to appear in Petroushka. You had to get a season’s subscription to see him. I managed to get a seat up in the balcony. Plus, my English teacher that year was a frustrated ballet dancer, so she set up what I would be seeing. That was a help.
The following year he came back and danced Balanchine’s Pas de Dix with Patricia McBride. The Louisville Ballet also staged Cinderella at Christmas that year instead of Nutcracker, and that was a lit of fun. Made me a lifelong dance fan, even if I am not a balletomane.

TOD:
I used to see a lot of performances of Indianapolis Ballet Theatre - and I enjoyed them. There is also - or was - no it's still around, I think.....and professional company named Dance Kaleidoscope that did some very nice things.
Then one day a friend took me to see the Houston Ballet do SWAN LAKE at Indiana University.....and I realized I hadn't really SEEN real ballet....so that's my favorite.
My favorite moment was when the white swan was tippy toeing across the stage and fell down..... A member of the ensemble, gentleman that he was.....a couple of minutes later walked to the spot where she had fallen, bent down, picked something up off the floor, examined it. and tossed it into the pit....

I covered New York City Ballet’s summer residence in Saratoga when I lived in Catskill. Balanchine’s works quickly became my favorite, with the best being Jewels, which I saw on the last night that Patricia McBride and Suzanne Ferrell danced the parts created for them.

We just attended the national online Seder program sponsored by our VP and the Second Gentlemen. I was very impressed; they did a wonderful job, and assembled a really stellar presenting team.
The real thing starts Saturday evening.

A few weeks ago a good friend's 50-something daughter passed away. She almost died about 8 years ago, but the doctors got her through it, though her quality of life afterwards wasn't very good. When I was at the bookstore the other day I was looking for a nice card for her. I'm trying to send my friend something every few weeks and they have very nice cards. But what can you say? Most humor is out. Sentiments like "Have a nice day" are out. There really aren't a lot that seem suitable. I have some blank cards and will again send a little hand-written note, but there's just so little one can say.

I saw this, first as Arrested Development actress dies. I well know who the talented Jessica Walter is but had no idea who the actress mentioned was.

On a lighter note, I had a funny thing happen the other day. I heard the plop of a package landing near my door, but I wasn't expecting anything and assumed it was for one of my neighbors, whose doors are right next to mine. Wrong. A friend had sent me one of those cute Amazon pop-up cards with a gift card in it. When you open the brightly-colored box there's a pop-up of balloons and it says "Happy Birthday." Except my birthday isn't until May. He did get the day right, just not the month. This is a friend who never used to give me my Christmas present until May. He's really, really bad with gifts! So getting a birthday present two months EARLY is a real switch. He's very computer savvy and 'Im surprised he doesn't have some sort of electronic reminder. Oh well. It was a nice surprise and gave me a chuckle. Could have been worse.

Her performance in Play Misty for Me was wonderful, as was her run as Amy Prentiss. I guess that's why her Lucille Bluth startled me. She really was the funniest thing on that show, with sister Liza Minnelli giving her a run for her money.

My father used to take me to the ballet. I had the good fortune to see Nureyev and Fonteyn dance Swan Lake sometime in the 60's. I can't recall the dates.

When we lived in Michigan my girlfriend & I saw Mikhail Baryshnikov perform. He had a bad knee by then and was no longer performing as well, still he was wonderful.

When we first moved to Ashland I went with a couple of women to see the St. Petersburg Ballet at the Ginger Rogers Theater in Medford. We had no idea how incredible the ballet would be. I had hoped they would return to Medford but alas they were playing much better theaters by then. I still feel very fortunate they were there the one time for me to enjoy.

In the late Sixties and early Seventies, Robert Joffrey’s ballet company did their summer residence in Tacoma. Mr. Joffrey was originally from Seattle. I saw several of their performances and I loved them all. The only ones I remember were the anti-war, The Green Table and one featuring all the male dancers called Olympics.

Topic of the Day: I've ushered for quite a few local ballet companies and their annual productions of Swan Lake and The Nutcracker. Some were even pretty good. I did once see Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle, but I forget which ballet they performed.

And a couple of times the all-male Les Ballets de Trockadero (https://trockadero.org/) company came to the Washington Center and I got to usher for them. They were really good!
