DR Elmore,

Hope you can feel better soon.

I didn't like  CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC either, but I had to finish it since I was reviewing it. In reading other reviews, I note a good many people found more to like about it than I did.

I loved CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC when i saw it in the theatres. And i wasn't expecting to love it since i love the books and the movies usually don't do the books justice.

Even though there were a lot of changes from the first book, I think it's possible to like the movie (if you love the books).

I think this movie is a chick flick. A fun romantic comedy, but definitely aimed at women.

It may have been aimed at women, but if it's a good movie, it should have some kind of universal appeal. I ADORED THE DEVIL WERS PRADA and that was every bit a "ckick flick" as SHOPAHOLIC. But one was well directed with superb performances and a plot and characters we hadn't seen before. SHOPAHOLIC was cliched, dumb, and predictable.

Just because you didn't like it doesn't mean it was cliched, dumb and predictable.

No, I didn't like it BECAUSE it was cliched, dumb, and predictable.

I began my evening of fun viewing by skimming through today's ONE LIFE TO LIVE. Nothing of interest for me. Hopefully next week will bring Kyle and Fish back into the spotlight.

Got back from Pittsburgh, where I enjoyed meeting td as if for the first time, and saw "Copacabana" which I enjoyed immensely, as did DR Julie.

I decided I'd save ROYAL PAINS to watch while I eat lunch tomorrow, so I turned off the DVR/cable box, and started on the rest of GREASE on Blu-ray.

Certainly better, sharper than the DVD, but this is certainly a notch below other musicals on Blu-ray like CHICAGO, ENCHANTED, HAIRSPRAY, SOUTH PACIFIC.

And of course a parody of "Copacabana" is called for:

(A chupa for those who don't know is a canopy for a Jewish wedding.  Having said that:)

Her name was Lola, she was a shul girl
With a nice sheytl in her hair and a dress from who knows where
She would sing zmiros about the Bible
And while she watched him from afar, Tony studied for the bar
Across a crowded shul, she thought he’s way way cool
He was cute and he loved his mother
She was no one’s fool

At the Chupa, by the cabana
The hottest thing since heaven’s manna
At the Chupa by the cabana
Tony and Lola
Had schnapps with some cola
At the Chupa
They pledged their love

His name was Barry, he was a singer
When they raised Lola on a chair, Barry couldn’t help but stare
And when they dropped her, he ran right over
But Barry tried to make a move, Tony didn’t like that groove
And all the punch they’d drunk wrought havoc with their junk
One big kiss and a lot of passion
But well, who’d have thunk

At the Chupa by the cabana
They drank vodka with Tropicana
At the Chupa by the cabana
Tony and Barry
Decided to marry
At the Chupa
She lost her love

Her name is Lola
She was a shul girl
But though she married very well, had a story she could tell
She lives in Frisco, that lovely Lola
She wrote a play about her tale, the play had a movie sale
It played the Broadway boards and won like ten awards
She has a hit and she has a Tony
And attracts the hordes

“At the Chupah by the cabana”
The hottest play since “Oleanna”
At the Chupah by the cabana
Lola wed Luba
And signed a ketubah
At the chupah
She found her love

Next I put in THE ENFORCER. I remembered that I had also watched the DVD of MAGNUM FORCE not so long ago (love David Soul and Robert Urich in that motorcycle cop unit; they are glorious to behold).

I had seen the movie before, once, so it was good to see it again. Most of it looked spectacularly good compared to the DVDs of the other DIRTY HARRY movies I have, so this is a big step up in video quality.

Once again, Warners defaults to the Dolby Digital track, so I had to switch to the Dolby TrueHD track and start the film over. I'm sure the movie was released in mono, but this track certainly sounded impressive for a 1976 movie with this newly repurposed 5.1 track.

Tyne Daly certainly became a better actress in the years to come than she is here. And I'm so glad there was no kind of hokey romance dredged up between them. They had a good, professional relationship that was building nicely.

Still in the mood for mystery, I picked another Hercule Poirot TV-movie off ther Poirot shelf: THE MYSTERY OF THE BLUE TRAIN.

Agatha Christie always claimed this was her worst book, but I certainly think PASSENGER TO FRANKFURT is far worse. At any rate, the screenwriter smoothed out anything in the boook that might have been problematic and made a genuinely surprising mystery of some complexity, and this one was cast very well, well, with one exception. Elliott Gould is pretty awful as the American millionaire businessman. Has he forgotten how to act?

Lindsay Duncan plays a matriarch on the verge of bankruptcy delightfully.

I've finished my evening surf and can now head down to bed very early. It's been nice getting to bed at an earlier hour than usual some of the past few nights.

Good night!

Tonight was fun.  I blew off the first night of reunion stuff to hang out with a family friend who is in town from Palm Springs and with my family.   It was a very nice relaxing evening and I'm really glad I decided to go this route.    Not sure what I'm doing in the morning.  If I wake up early enough I'll go to the "Run for the Cob" that's a part of Corn Days.  I'm not going to stress about it, though and if I'm not up that early, I won't do it.

So...

I managed to get down to Pike Street in plenty of time to catch my 3:00 bus down to Richmond.  That was good.

Then it turned out that my 3:00 bus left at 2:56.  That was also good.  However, as we drove through the next intersection, I noticed a man with some luggage standing off to the side of the road, looking at the bus, and holding up three fingers, with a question mark in his face.  Not good for him, I guess.

Then we pulled up by Penn Station for the midtown pick-up.  And that's when the fun began.

There were plenty of people waiting on the sidewalk, many more people than could fit on the bus.  The driver even radio'd for another bus to come before she finished pulling into the space.  After letting some people on the bus, and telling a whole slew of others to wait for the next one, we began our trip...

We traveled two blocks and stopped.  For a while.  Then another block.  Then another half block.  Then we finally entered the Lincoln Tunnel.  The journey from Penn Station to the Jersey side of the Lincoln Tunnel, took about an hour.  Normally, that should have taken about ten minutes.  Then came the traffic on the NJ Turnpike.  A Friday rush hour, coupled with a rain storm, and a few accidents, well... My bus should have pulled into Richmond around 10:00.  Instead I arrived in Richmond around 11:40.

Thankfully, we had a good driver, and there were some entertaining and not too chatty folks on the bus. But, boy, was I glad when we finally arrived at Boulevard and Broad.  Freedom! ;)

Neil Hefti was very good friends with the brother of my first piano teacher.  This guy, IIRC, was head of the Vocal Department at University of Omaha or Nebraska, or whatever it's called.  He gave me an informal voice lesson when I was about 14 or 15 and told me I had one of the most naturally resonant voices he had ever heard, which was a big confidence booster for me, since I had been so focused on playing the piano up until then.
