Well, you've read the notes, the notes sung a September song, and now it is time for you to post until the September cows come home.

Good morning, all! How can it be September so soon?

Last night at around 12:30 am the Oaf Above Me carried on noisily, so much so I could hear him through my earplugs. He then went out and returned noisily much later. I pray daily for his death or eviction. I do hope one or the other comes soon.

I have the McGlinnventory this morning with lots of notesfor or paralegal about composers' names and numbers of titles that she omitted - how many string quartets did Haydn write? - and other fixes to our price lists. I also need to run through the composer editions and verify information so I can finish up all the pricing and the bidding war can begin.  After that, I meet Mr Skip Kennon at Toyland for more LADY OF THE SLIPPER edits.

Best songs to win an Oscar:

"Secret Love"
"Love Is a Many Splendored Thing"
"The Shadow of Your Smile"

[They're all by Paul Francis Webster.  I'm prejudiced.]

Worst songs:

Almost every one that has won during the past 15 years.  Take you pick.

DR Jane you asked if I knew when the GLADES would be reairing starting with the pilot.  I don't think I'll really know until the series airs its first run.  I tried to look on the A&E guide and it wasn't too helpful. My tv doesn't list the shows by title. But I wonder if once the series ends if they will start it again (i think we are on episode 9).  When it ends i will see if they are starting again. It really is funny.

The 5 Worst Songs to Win An Oscar

Mind you I only know about half of the 76 songs in this category (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award_for_Best_Original_Song#List_of_winners_and_nominees), so it might not be all that fair for me to opine, but here goes. These are my faves as songs, not necessarily in terms of how well they worked or didn't work in the movie.

Favorites:
* The Way You Look Tonight: Perfection. I can listen to 30 versions of this song and not get tired.
* Somewhere Over the Rainbow: See above.
* Under the Sea: Like almost every Disney song, the Hebrew version is better, but what can you do? :)
* Sooner or Later: One of Sondheim's lesser songs outshines 90% of the shlock out there
* Streets of Philadelphia: Bruce can do little wrong. Now, if he'd just enunciate a bit better so that we can hear those lyrics...

Least Favorites
* Que Sera Sera: Sorry, grandma - my teeth hurt every time I hear this one
* Windmills of Your Mind: shoot me now
* You Light up My Life: Only good thing about this song is that the brilliant Elaine Brier got to do her far-better-and-apropos spoof "You F***ed up My Life"
* My Heart will go On: Confession time: I wore out two of Celine Dion's early U.S. albums. This piece of treacle, however, makes me wanna puke.
* White Christmas: Sorry; as an Orthodox Jew, I can't help shouting at the speakers whenever this song comes on: Really, Irving? "Just like the ones you used to know" where, exactly? Back in the shtetl?

Back to work now...

"CLOSER" SPOILER -  AND REQUEST FOR SPOILER RE "THE CLOSER"

So with the lead character having basically murdered that man in the final scene, is there any indication that there will be punishment for what she did?  (I found that episode - and that ending -  extremely hard to take.)

To my recollection, that's the second time in the complete series of episodes that she's let justice, which has been taken out of her hands, work its own course to punish the guilty. I wouldn't be surprised if, in the next two episodes, it doesn't come back to bite her, possibly fro the season cliffhanger.

Well, the first day back at school was an Epic Fail as they say, as I never made it.  In fact, I never left home to go to school. I was sidelined by another bout of dehydration, which hasn't reared it's ugly head in over 3 weeks, but decided to early this morning. I know why it's back, I'm not hydrating like I should and I ate some food high in sodium and probably MSG, so that just dried me up.  So I'm home trying to pretend I'm at school (via emails) and trying to stay hydrated and hoping the cramps and the diarrhea will subside.

Aren't we just a healthy bunch here at HHW??

More later...

Matthew -- Gatoraide. Or that new Smart Water DR Sandra told me about.

I have Gatorade here, sipping on that and a 7-up which helps the gas end of things.  Smart water is great, too.  Water in general is not always the best thing right away after having your first bout with diarrhea.  Kinda have to ease back into water.  Vitamin Water is good too as it has electrolytes and doesn't have any sodium, unlike Gatorade.    Unfortunately, for something like this, you have to let it run it's course.  Imodium helps a great deal, also.

The 5 Worst Songs to Win An Oscar
Quote
* White Christmas: Sorry; as an Orthodox Jew, I can't help shouting at the speakers whenever this song comes on: Really, Irving? "Just like the ones you used to know" where, exactly? Back in the shtetl?

Back to work now...

And you don't think Irving was considering the background of the singer/character who would be singing that song?

Does Sondheim know from meat pies?  Or giants in the sky?

Did Jerry Herman really need a little Christmas?  Or have personal knowledge of the sort of Garbage of the very rich in his "Dear World" lyrics?

Garbage

Pâté de foie gras,
Thursday's gardenias, ribbons and orange rinds.
A volume of Chaucer bound in Morocco,
Lilies and coffee grinds.
The pit of a peach, the stem of a cherry floating in pink champagne.
There was a time when garbage was a pleasure,
When you found the sound of good and plenty gurgling in your drain.
The world was all ginger and lime.
The world was the rustle of silk, purple and puce, crystal and lace,
Fresh orange juice, ginger and lime.

The shell of a clam, the claw of a lobster.
Hairpins and choc'late mousse.
A page of Othello, gilt at the edges.
Daisies and Charlotte Russe.
A rose and a fan, a piece of pimento floating in turquoise ink.
There was a time when garbage was a pleasure,
When you found the joy of gracious living underneath your sink.
The world was all ginger and lime.
The world was the rustle of silk, purple and puce, crystal and lace,
Fresh orange juice, ginger and lime.

What most songwriters of the past had in common was an ability to channel their creativity by tapping into the mainstream.  It didn't matter what one's personal history -- or more to the point, one's ancestors' history -- might have been.  It was the ability to communicate ideas with love, compasison, wistfulness, what have you.

I deem "White Christmas" as one of the great treasures of American songwriting.  Sorry it's such a pill for you. But suggesting that it's somehow phony because Berlin never experienced such things back on the shtetl is really a bit much.  He was 5 years old when his family left Belarus and moved to New York.

Though Christmas was not part of his personal culture, he was exposed to it through all his formative years.  And I'm quite satisfied that the sentiments of the song are quite genuine.

It's another day of nothing but rescheduling. I had to replace one of my singers this week, then I had another one get a tour of CHICAGO that takes him out of town during most of the recording so I had to reassign half of his numbers. Aaron Lazar is taking over those songs. I thought he was wonderful in A TALE OF TWO CITIES. I didn't see him as Carl-Magnus in the latest round of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC.

So, Aaron is scheduled, and I'm working on the contact list for the ensemble singers now.

Best songs:

"Lullaby of Broadway"
"The Way You Look Tonight"
"Over the Rainbow"
"Secret Love"
"Sooner or Later"

Worst songs:
"Que Sera Sera" (over "True Love"?!)
"Talk to the Animals"
"You Light Up My Life" (the worst mistake of all because Theme from "New York, New York" wasn't even nominated)
"It Goes Like It Goes" (over "The Rainbow Connection"?!)
"My Heart Will Go On" (over "Journey to the Past"?!)
"Into the West" (over "The Triplettes of Bellville")

I was alive back then but wouldn't say that 1970 had the best fives songs ever nominated.

For Al We Know (Lovers And Other Strangers), Pieces of Dreams (Pieces Of Dreams), Thank You Very Much (Scrooge), Till Love Touches Your Life (Madron), Whistling Away The Dark (Darling Lili)

Madron is a film I've never seen and don't know how the song wks in the film. I think there were other songs that were better.

Three songs that were eligible but didn't make the final cut
"EVERYBODY WANTS TO BE A CAT" - The Aristocats -
"LET IT BE" - Let It Be
"SUICIDE IS PAINLESS" - M*A*S*H -

While my hiking group goes on my favorite hike I have to go to a meeting to learn how to inject myself. :(

That sounds serious, DR Jane, and NOT fun.

I only injected a rubber ball today since I'm not ready to begin the drug yet.  The possible early side effects, which should ease with time, include nausea & dizziness.  I'm going to wait until it is more convenient for me to deal with that.  I'm planning a trip to Chicago in October & will begin after I return.

While the woman who ran the program works for Lilly, the makers of Forteo, she obviously believes in the drug and was very engaging.  She wants to take it but hasn't been approved yet because she hasn't broken any bones.  Kind of a catch 22.  She said Lilly offered her the job of educating people (only those about to begin, or already using Forteo) a couple of times and turned them down.  The drug was too new and she needed to know more about it.  I like that she had to have confidence in it.

I called AT&T because my home phone bill for the last two months has been topping one hundred dollars and in this day and age I just can't believe that's possible with so many alternatives.  It turns out my "plan" is from 2004 and is completely antiquated by just about every standard.  When she got through bringing it up to date, I will now not be paying anything over fifty bucks and that includes unlimited out of state calls.  Quite a difference I'd say - and they're giving me a sixty dollar credit for this last bill, so from now on it will be much nicer.  She told me I should call at least once a year to check and see if my plan is the best for me.

I read bits of the news about the hostage situation that outside D.C.  I'm kind of glad I didn't read the exact location.  This from DS Craig:
Quote
Yes. It was a 4 hour hostage situation... three blocks from here. Roads were--and still are--closed off. Sirens and helicopters all around. I was coming home as DHS police rushed by but didn't think much of it till I got home and found out. Considering, I guess it ended pretty well.

That depends on how you look at it.  She told Reggie he was going home, told Reggie he had snitched out Reggie, made sure Reggie had plenty of phone calls, making sure the people who wanted to kill him knew where he was going to be and that he would be alone and then took him there and left him in the middle of the gang who she knew would kill him.....Sounds like an accomplice to anythign that may happen.  You could easily make an argument that she's guilty of murder or assault or whatever happens

So this guy held hostages at the Discovery Channel?   Wow, that's bizarre...I mean it's the Discovery Channel

I know!  Here are a couple of quotes from THIS (http://www.comcast.net/articles/news-national/20100901/US.Discovery.Channel.Gunman/) article:

Quote
"The Discovery Channel produces many so-called 'Environmental Programs' supposedly there to save the planet," Lee said in an ad he took out in a Washington newspaper to promote the protest. "But the truth is things are getting WORSE! Their programs are causing more harm than good."

...

A lengthy posting that could be seen Wednesday on a website registered to Lee said Discovery and its affiliates should stop "encouraging the birth of any more parasitic human infants," a possible reference to shows like "Kate Plus 8" and "19 Kids and Counting." Instead, he said, the network should air "programs encouraging human sterilization and infertility."

And while we're talking about Red Velvet Cake...

Can any DR tell me exactly what the flavor is of Red Velvet Cake?

Yes, I know it's made with a bit of cocoa which helps with the red color - in addition to the red food coloring - but it's most definitely not a "chocolate cake". I've always felt that the flavor of "Red Velvet Cake" is actually the flavor of the Frosting.

-And that's why I tend not to "swoon" over a slice of Red Velvet Cake like some of my friends do. -And when I ask them what the "flavor" is, all they can ever say is, "It tastes like Red Velvet Cake". ;)

Interesting question about the Best Song Oscar.  I wax nostalgic in my review for "8 Mile" (which will go live one of these years, LOL) about the last time I loved all 5 of the Best Song nominees--1970 (for film year 1969).  Yes, I'm sure some of you weren't even born yet, in which case you can kiss my ASS.  :)

First of all, you didn't read my post correctly.  I said Film Year 1969, i.e., Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head, What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?, Come Saturday Morning, et al.  And second, I didn't say they were the best five, I said it was the last year I liked all five nominees.  But aside from that I agree with you completely.  :)

I posted this little trivia factoid a long time ago, but can anyone remember what makes WHITE CHRISTMAS so unique in the annals of Top 40 hits?

Tomorrow I drive to visit the client from the trial in a jail a couple hours away.  Edith will go with me.  It will be nice to get out of the office at least for the morning.  I should say it will be nice to get out of the office and get paid to be out of the office.  There is a great Dutch bakery on the way.  I may stop and get some Dutch letters for my mom.  She loves them.

Well, I could always pretend it got lost in the mail.  It's the thought that counts.

Home from Sunset Blvd callbacks, which went fine and we have a cast.  Hopefully they will all accept.

I'm feeling better.  We'll see what the night brings.

Back from a pretty spectacular evening - I have to go out now and eat something because all I've had all day was a small sandwich and some melon and prosciutto, so I'm starving.  All I can say is, there were about eight no-shows who'd made reservations, and about six people who'd said they were coming on Facebook.  That is just so wrong.  However, had they showed up I haven't a clew as to where they would have put them because the room was jammed, a complete sell out.  About forty diners and twenty-five show only folks and in that room that is jammed, with people at the bar and at every table and standing at the bar, too.  It was an amazing crowd, with some really cool people in attendance.  This first time out was a learning curve for me, and I now know how the subsequent shows have to function.  I'll talk more about this is in the notes, which probably won't be up until two.  But I couldn't have asked for a better show and I think the word of mouth is going to be fantastic.

-And when I ask them what the "flavor" is, all they can ever say is, "It tastes like Red Velvet Cake". ;)

That's how I feel, too.  A friend of mine didn't know that there was any cocoa/chocolate in Red Velvet cakes. at all.  She thought that it was a yellow cake with red food coloring.

Congratulations, BK on the wonderful evening!  Can't wait to read about it...but I must.  I'll be off to bed soon.
