Well, you've read the notes, the notes had running gags, and now it is time for you to post until the running cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: REPINE!
-
Aside from kiss my ASS, one of my favorite runners was LIMBO! Those few crazy nights when we had a full compliment of late-night denizens posting up a silly storm - one of those nights I think we did ten pages before two in the morning.
-
Welcome eight GUESTS.
-
Who ARE you people?
-
First non-bk post. And if anyone has a problem with that, they can kiss my grits!
-
Certainly I have no problem with it, so your grits are safe.
-
Make that twelve GUESTS. I guess that's a running gag.
-
And, once again, it is TEDIOUS for people to not believe Allison. They go to her for help and then discount it routinely.
Agreed. Absolute inanity.
"I had this dream...the mayor was the one who killed that girl!"
"Impossible. You must be wrong. I've known him for years. He could never do that."
"But it was definitely him in my dream. I saw him take the power drill to her skull."
"Stop it, Allison! You're mistaken! You, who have been right on the money 107 times in a row. You, whose information we have scoffed at with shocking regularity, only to have eaten crow and had to offer you a huge apology. You're wrong, wrong, wrong. And you're fired, for being so inexplicably wrong, which you never are."
Another thing that irks me: the 3-6 shots of Allison every episode showing her waking up from a dream with a gasp and sitting bolt upright. It's beyond a cliche at this point.
-
Will we never get to page two? I guess that's a running gag.
-
TOTD...
My favorite HHW running gags:
"The plumber is on his way over to check our 4-year-old water heater."
"I have a pot of Irish Oatmeal doing its overnight soak thing on the stove, and I have two loads of laundry to fold before I turn in for the evening."
"Sitting at the local Oil Changers getting lubed and changed, including transmission fluid."
"Now, I've got some writing to finish up and then I'll be heading down to bed."
(NOTE: I am assuming these are running gags.)
-
I gotta tell you. That's a running gag.
-
The Uncouth Interlopers were a running gag.
-
Between the two chocolates I just ate and the Food Network "The Secret Life of Steak" I'm not officially hungry again. I'm thinking I should go to bed soon.

And that, my friends, is a fine kettle of "what is it" fish.

And the word of the day is: REPINE!
Agatha did not care for the REPINE floors, and would complain frequently to anyone who would listen about how she would have much preferred reoak.
(At least she had enough sense to realize that remahogany would have been too expensive, by far.)

The oatmeal bowl. Being washed, of course.

Yesterday, Jane replied:

Or, more accurately, tine-ier.
Remember, there is no groaning here at HHW.

Good morning, all! I'm finally seeing my barber this morning before heading down to Toyland, where I shall wear out the photocopier on Act Two of LADY OF THE SLIPPER. I also need to call Miles Kreuger about this forthcoming biography of Victor Herbert. After that, a short trek to the NYPL. I think that's my day.
Yesterday afternoon, I got caught up in beaurocratic red tape from the Miami University accounts payable department, and I need to resolve that today as well. I have sent them everything Fedex can provide for the shipment to Ohio and they claim it's not what they need. Unfortunately, there's nothing else I can get from Fedex to make them, so I have no idea what the hell they're looking for!
Oy!

Perhaps I will have my new glasses tomorrow....or maybe not until Monday. Time will tell.
UNDERPANTS!
And the food/movie titles are always fun.
And I certainly enjoy HHW when someone mentions THE MUSIC MAN and everyone starts posting his/her favorite quotes from this wonderful show.

Thanks, DR JOSE. Playbills are always appreciated out in the hinterlands. But you can just start a stack and send them as a group if you prefer.

Is "Too Many Connections" a running gag? :-\
-
Why, I gotta tell you.
-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And I almost did not get up on time-ish this morning. I woke up at 6:00, looked at the clock, then decided to stay in bed until my alarm went off. Well, I heard the radio turn on at 7:00... listened to whatever was playing... then next thing I knew it was quiet. And that it was also 7:45. Of course, the ringer on my cellphone - a.k.a. my alarm clock - was still turned to "silent" after my sojourn to the theatre last night. In any case... I'm up.
-
DR FJL - re: the humor in DRS and CB - Gotcha. Strangely(?) enough, I thought the humor in CB needed to be a bit cruder and ruder - much closer to the original movie - where a lot of it was actually just "real" - at least John Waters' version of Baltimore reality. DRS's bad taste humor was, at least, imho, smartly done, and had an edge to it. As for CB, a lot of seemed to go for the "let's shock them" laughs; I actually caught myself groaning out loud a few times. And book-wise, well... As they entered the final face-off (hope that's not a spoiler), I actually said, "Oh, no," out loud too. Spoo!
However, there is some great talent on that stage. I loved the girl who played Lenora, Alli Mauzey. And Christopher J. Hanke is just still so cute, cute, cute! (And not in a stupid-ass way.)

HA! I'm in the midst of sipping a cup of green tea. Well... The past few mornings, I've been thinking that my green tea has tasted a little weak, mild, but I thought that was just due to the fact that I opened an older box that I've had in my cupboard for a while. I just took a few sips of my current cup, and said to myself - Now this is green tea! -Then I went to my impromptu tea tin, and realized that I had been pulling out bags of chamomile tea the past few days. -I wonder if that's why I've been so calm, cool and collective lately? ;)

And I guess The Reservoir itself became its own running gag too.

Shouldn't that be for others to decide? ;)

Hi All,
I know that I don't post here very often, but Bruce suggested that I post my request to the board. I'll be brief.
I have recently become very fond of a young (23 or so) lady that I work with who is about to go back to school in August to obtain her MBA. Before she locks up another 3 years of her life, she intends to visit New York (in June) with a girl friend. Well, she is begun investigating the cost of lodging and is appalled at its cost (she is just out of college and doesn't earn very much at this point). So my question is: do you know of a place in New York that is of reasonable cost where a pair of young ladies can stay for a few days (they intend 3-4 nights, then continue on to Washington, DC) that is both safe and clean? It doesn't have to be any place fancy; just safe, clean and affordable. I've searched the Internet and have been unable to find anything that puts my mind at ease. If you know of such a place, or know someone who might, please contact me.
Bruce, of course, being the helpful fellow that he is, has offered to send me the e-mail address of the fellow he rented the apartment from when he was doing Brain in NY. But on the chance the the apartment isn't available, he suggested that I post here. I can personally vouch for the character of the young ladies. Both are considerate, clean and neat. Many thanks to any and all who can help with a suggestion.
Warmest Regards,
Vincent

BK, re: your traffic woes. Do you ever listen to the traffic reports before you head out? I know that i try to do that if i'm heading downtown. Here in montreal they have reports every 10 minutes. That might at least help you not get stuck in any major messes.
Also, (and i'm not sure if this is common in the US), here in montreal we have these electronic signs posted on the highways that tell you the traffic patterns up ahead. So you can turn off it if seems like there is a major accident.

I agree that it sometimes seems a bit odd when the people working with allison don't believe her. However, in this case i think maybe it was slightly justified. Maybe not for her to be fired. But Cynthia has not worked with her that long. Plus sometimes her dreams are not exactly right. They just lead her to the right place by the end.
As for the blonde girl, i also had inclinations that maybe she was not on the up and up. But i thought how they had her at the door was quite jarring. And i thought how the cases tied together was quite great. Especially when allison/cynthia went to her mom and she said she had never been kidnapped.
I was really interested in the whole show and can't wait for next week.

As for folks' doubting Allison's visions on MEDIUM, sorry, but I can't forgive Anjelica Huston's character just because she hasn't worked but a few months with Allison. This isn't the first time that she's seen that Allison's visions often require time for interpretation; they aren't always readily-available solutions to puzzles. (This also isn't the first time she's been short and irresponsible in her treatment of Allison's method of working. Lucky for her Allison and family are so desperate. If they didn't need the money, I would have left her employ long ago. Who needs that kind of grief?)

I'll be watching last night's OLD CHRISTINE and CSI: MIAMI today. I'm expecting COYOTE UGLY on Blu-ray in the mail today (from UPS). Don't know what else might arrive. I think Joe has been very supportive -- above-and-beyond in virtually every circumstance. But now he has an opportunity to take control of his own life and provide for his family. Joe has time and again demonstrated faith in Allison. She's demonstrated no faith in him. I was shouting at my TV, too, but I was shouting at Allison.
Isn't it great that we're different?!!

I agree with DR Ron about this. Though the girls' college funds are important, they're in DIRE straits, and this could be their ticket out. She should demonstrate the same faith in Joe that Joe has in her for so long.

Jennifer, I listen to the traffic reports from the time I get in the car to the time I arrive at the theater - and do you know what? They have never, not once, spoken of any problem on any freeway I've been on, despite my being in bumper to bumper traffic. They tend only to alert you to slow spots where cars are on fire, or crashes, or stalls. Last night, however, just as I was deciding which freeway to take home they did mention a crash on the 57 so I took the 5 and all was well.

Re: Traffic in L.A.
What happened to those who spend their day working in one building from 9 to 5?
Those days are long gone:
A. Most Medical establishments work 7-3, 3-11, 11-7
B. Many places work 10 hour shifts
C. Large companies with a mix of engineering and manufacturing (the entire aero-space industry) have their entire work force staggered to avoid parking lot pile-ups.
D. The major retail centers also have employees coming and going at all sorts of hours.
And don't underestimate the number of out-of-state drivers just passing through on their way to other West Coast destinations.

Also, (and i'm not sure if this is common in the US), here in montreal we have these electronic signs posted on the highways that tell you the traffic patterns up ahead. So you can turn off it if seems like there is a major accident.
In Southern California, the majority of the freeways were constructed over "virgin land" - many, like the 60, 91, and 57 do not parallel any existing roads at all. The old-time highways like Route 66 have become clogged city streets. For much of the freeway system, there is no available alternative to just being patient. And, a tie up on one freeway rapidly translates to a tie up on others. There are only four eastward exits from the LA basin - Routes, 210, 10, 60, and 91 - all of these have North/South Freeways that connect them (5, 110, 710, 605, 57); as soon as the word gets out that one of the Eastward freeways has a problem, traffic rapidly migrates to other three, causing them to jam up.
Briefly put - the highway infrastructure in the LA Basin is incapable of sustaining smooth flowing traffic 24/7 - during peak hours (and that's 8 hours a day) any "glitch" is instantly translated into a snarl that can be reflected throughout most of the system and can takes hours to unwind.

I think right now my favorites are Marissa/Tony and Kristi/Mark. I also think Mario/Karina are very good.
I love julianne, so i'm having a tough time. Cause adam is not too good. But he's trying hard!
As for who will go, for the women the only one i can see leaving is Monica Seles. Although that would depend on how popular she is. She was a huge tennis talent (did she play for the US?) But her personality does not come off as endearing as most of the others. And she is clearly the worst dancer.
For the men, the only 2 i would deem safe are mario/karina and jason taylor/edyta. I would think that julianne and adam would be safe this week based on her popularity.
So that leaves penn/kym, cristian/cherly and steve guttenberg/anna. My guess to leave would be the latter (even though he is charming). I don't really find cristian is coming across that well. But i believe cheryl has fans. and i would think penn does too.
We shall see.

I'm listening to a CD I never thought I'd hear - Lester Lanin's Dancing Theater Party - an LP I had when I was but a wee sprig of a twig of a tad of a lad of a youth and was buying any theater music and film music "cover" album. For anyone who thinks recording is better today because of all our technology, I defy them to listen to the sound on this CD and point me in the direction of better sound. Every instrument, every line of these fun orchestrations is vivid and clear - this thing sounds like it was recorded yesterday with state of the art equipment.

SPOILERS for last night's MEDIUM
SPOILERI think Joe has been very supportive -- above-and-beyond in virtually every circumstance. But now he has an opportunity to take control of his own life and provide for his family. Joe has time and again demonstrated faith in Allison. She's demonstrated no faith in him. I was shouting at my TV, too, but I was shouting at Allison.
Isn't it great that we're different?!!
Guess what? I agree with DR Ronp! :)
I do get that the college fund is important. But in this instance i do think that allsion should have had some faith in her hubby.
The thing that gets me mad though is that i still don't get why joe is out of work. He was in a hostage situation and i don't think his employer should have been able to fire him at all (without a huge severance package). HE really should have sued him.
Add to that the fact that he had that job (the rich guy whose wife loved allison). The ending to that part made no sense (other than the writers wanted to keep joe out of work).

I'm a little sorry that the running gag about DR Karen and my fling in Paris has gone by the wayside. I was counting on Cason's inevitable windfall from his eventual TV series (perhaps more than one) and inevitable film career to help support me in my old age and was hoping to use the internet postings as a guilt trip.

Tuesday greetings from beautiful downtown Minneapolis! Thanks to travel vibes from several DRs, my trip from Cincinnati was quite smooth and I was in my room here at the Marquette Hotel before noon. My roommate Sue arrived yesterday, so I knew I wouldn't have to wait for the room to be ready.
I've taken the Skywalk down to the convention center to pick up my registration packet. On the way back, I stopped for a tuna sandwich at Subway and am now in the nice hotel business center using the computer. Sue is out on an all-day F. I am finally listening to Harry Connick's Jr.'s Thou Shalt Not. I know this guy is a very good musician, but I find it really wacky that he's had a career as a vocalist, because, you know, if I want to hear Frank Sinatra I'll listen to Frank Sinatra - what Connick does is embarrassing, at least for me. He also takes an orchestration credit for, thus far, an album whose "orchestra" consists of piano, bass, drums, and sax, and since it seems it's a jazz wannabe score, I'm quite sure the sax is improving. Not exactly an "orchestration." As to the songs - banal, boring, with howler lyrics like "So ring the bell, I surrender to love in which I fell."
-
Hi, Ben.

I bought one Lester Lanin album at a yard sale....
He was on the cover writing on a blackboard, I think. And it was just great.
Then I bought another - maybe R/H or some other Broadway something....another home run.
It was a lot of dance medley tracks....reading the notes on the Epic albums seemed to say that Mr Lanin and his orchestra was in great demand for college dances around the country.
Do colleges still have proms or annual dances or campus wide dances that have orchestras come in to play? Or is it all....something else now?

CSI MIAMI - a barely OK episode. A murder at a wedding but not a particularly interesting case.
I was really infuriated with Eric playing Sir Galahad again, this time doing a favor for a stripper who came on to him. Last time he tried to do a favor for a woman in distress, he was set up and got into all sorts of trouble. So stupid to fall victim to a pair of batting eyelashes again. I'll be interested to see if anything comes of this, or if it was merely a part of last night's episode only.
-
Next, I watched another NUMB3RS episode. This was investigaing the death of a mixed martial arts fighter during a sparring session. Pretty good mystery.
-
Next I watched ALVIN & THE CHIPMUNKS GO TO THE MOVIES, a compilation of three episodes from their 1990 TV series that do riffs on HONEY I SHRUNK THE KIDS, BIG, and BACK TO THE FUTURE. Lots of songs - 7 in the total 66 minute running time of the three combined episodes.
The BACK TO THE FUTURE episode was the best since the modern CHipmunks go back in time and switch places with the 1957 Chipmunks right before they became famous. I LOVED the way the 1957 Chipmunks looked (just like on THE ALVIN SHOW series on Saturday morning TV), and they even had Clyde Crashcup from the old series as the one who invented the time machine. Also got to hear "Alvin's Harmonica" and "The Alvin Twist" on this episode. Such happy memories of a more innocent time.
-
I plan on watching DAISY KENYON tonight when I go back down, so I got the DVD all cued up in the player, but since I had time, I went ahead and watched two of the bonus documentaries on the disc. I started with the "making of" documentary. Glad I had seen the movie about a year ago on the Fox Movie Channel, or many of the surprises would have been ruined by watching this before watching the movie.
Good little featurette, even if it doesn't have Dr. Drew Casper frothing at the mouth about Joan Crawford. I guess they figured they didn't need him since they had Charles Busch.

I take it then from your post, DR JoseSPiano, that the people of your side of the table see a lot of the same people at these auditions, year in and year out? Someone from out of town, or a fresh face, really stands out? I wonder how long that advantage lasts?!
"Year in and year out"? More like "day in and day out" - well, at least "week in and week out".
Being "new", "fresh" can work to your advantage if you're actually good and right for the project. Otherwise, you're just another P&R in the "No" pile.
On the flip side, it's always nice to see the "regulars" grow - hopefully, they grow and get better over the months and years. It's always wonderful to see - and hear - "Dancers Who Sing" become "Dancers Who Sing(!!!)", as well as "Singers Who Move Well" become "Singers Who Dance Really Well".
Today's particular "newbie" was, well, to put it bluntly... He was pretty. Pretty Hot. Good face. Good tan. Good arms. Etc., etc., etc. Like I mentioned earlier, we all noticed him - and there was a representative of almost every "persuasion" behind the table today. He danced very well, alas, he just wasn't right for the project, so he did not garner a call-back in the afternoon. However, he's been put in the file for a few other projects at the casting agency.
*Funny thing - It turned out that he had worked most recently with some friends of mine in L.A. on a show, and, in fact, he was just in the recent production of All Shook Up that bk saw a few weeks ago. Small world, isn't it?

Have any of you choral types out there ever run across a SAB arrangement of Faure's "Cantique de Jean Racine"?
-
Yes, I have returned! I survived the photo shoot, and believe me, they got a lot of close-ups.
Actually, for anyone who knows me well, this whole shoot would make them laugh. Fortunately for me, they needed an old coot for this ad, so the casting was perfect.
So, at 6:01 in the morning, I arrived on the shores of Lake Washington in Seattle. The Wardrobe Woman had asked me to dress appropriately as an older retired gentleman (coot) going fishing on a lake. I wore the type of clothes she had mentioned, but she immediately picked out clothes from her wardrobe van that she preferred. Okay, so I preferred her choices, too.
So after getting re-dressed, meeting all of the crew and the photograher; at 6:35 a.m, I climbed into a rowboat and began rowing around Lake Washington. Oh. did I mention that before I climbed in to the rowboat, they were nice enough to scrape and wash the ice out of the boat? Yes, it was a chilly 32 degrees this morning.
Now the idea of me fishing is amusing. I prefer to eat them than catch them. But the idea of me in a rowboat rowing around the lake in the pre-dawn morning is something that I am sure my sister would pay big bucks to see.

No worries. I just never really thought I'd be done so early today, so I have a bit more free time this evening. Not complaining.

Ifolk.
Well, Hillary Clinton has been caught in a lie about sniper fire. History is always better as we want it to be.
Well, she is trying to change the subject:
Clinton: Rev. Wright ‘Would Not Have Been My Pastor’ (http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/03/25/clinton-rev-wright-would-not-have-been-my-pastor/)
Breaking her silence on the controversy surrounding Barack Obama’s long-time pastor, Hillary Clinton said Tuesday that she would have left the congregation if her pastor behaved like Obama’s.
And a lot of American women would have left their marriage if their husbands had behaved like Bill.
der Brucer

Why bother?
-Really, why bother?

Am I missing something here??

I would never leave my congregation because of a pastor. I have known most of the folks for over twenty years. Pastors come and go.

I think however Bill decided to behave in his private sexual time, it was his business. It was probably no better and no worse than a great many of the married men I know, hetero- and homosexual. I always suspected Hillary was fully aware of everything and didn't care until it became public.

Sorry, DR Matthew - That was the choral snob in me coming out and trying to make a joke. I've just always associated that beautiful piece of music with male voices - even though it was originally scored for a mixed chorus. You weren't missing anything since there was nothing to miss.

Well, when one of my pastors opted to preech a hatful sermon against my government and the was in which I was engaged, I felt I had two choices:
A. Take my check book and leave the parish for good.
B. March right up to the front and argue right back!
I preferred B, the wife urged A.

Ah yes, I understand now :) Sarcasm detected and sarcasm granted :)
We did a movement of the Faure Requiem for Palm/Passion Sunday (the first movement to be exact) and it was an SAB arrangement. It was quite lovely and it worked well with that voicing (with the organ picking up a lot of the harmonies). We'll probably do more next year. I may just arrange the Cantique myself, along with a few Rutter choral pieces we love but just don't have the forces to do the originally arrangements.
-
I would never leave my congregation because of a pastor. I have known most of the folks for over twenty years. Pastors come and go.
That's a pretty strong tie to a congregation. Do you think, though, Laura, that your congregation would tolerate a pastor who preached intolerance to them -- who told them to hate others -- whose very words espoused civil strife for change to his way of thinking?
I don't think they would. Some pastors ARE their churches...they draw folks to them with their messages.

I agree with DR Ron about this. Though the girls' college funds are important, they're in DIRE straits, and this could be their ticket out. She should demonstrate the same faith in Joe that Joe has in her for so long.
I agree that Joe should be supported at this time in their lives. Suze Orman has even said that people should plan for their own retirement BEFORE their kids' college because the kids can get grants or scholarships or go to a community college, etc. This is a very similar situation. They need the money NOW...and the kids seem like they would have NO trouble getting scholarships or grants.

As can most churches.
Which rather begs the question, I think, as to why Obama believes he can belong to a church that espouses racial hatred (vis a vis the pastor) but believes he can "distance" himself from the pastor who preaches to an apparently receptive congregation? In other words, how is it possible to willingly be part of a congregation feeding on racial hatred and expect anyone to believe you do not agree with the meal?

And a lot of American women wouldn't have left. He was the President of the United States for god's sake, you can get a lot out of maintaining that relationship. Stop the Presses: Men and Women Like Different Foods!
...
Led by epidemiologist Beletshachew Shiferaw of Oregon's Department of Human Services, researchers pored over dietary data generated by more than 14,000 adult American respondents to a Foodborne Disease Active Surveillance Network survey. The results:
Men eat much more meat, especially veal and ham.
Women eat more fruits and vegetables. Men are more likely to eat frozen rather than fresh hamburgers.
Women eat more alfalfa sprouts. Men eat more runny eggs and raw oysters.
So glad to see Oregon's tax dollars at work!
No to frozen burgers - yes to runny eggs and raw oysters (just not on the same plate).

2008 World Figure Skating
This year's competition was a mixed bag at the outset for the U.S. First, only one of the ladies in competition earned a medal at nationals, and she was the bronze medalist. Oddly, she cost the U.S. a "body" at next year's World's where we can only send two women because she finished well below expectations. The ladies who finished 1st, 2nd and 4th at nationals were too young (one by 5 days) to compete under current rules. They competed, though, at Junior World's, doing the exact same programs they would have done at senior World's (hypocrisy, what?).
Happily, nationals 2nd place finisher Rachel Flatt won the juniors gold; nationals 4th place finisher Caroline Zhang won the silver; and nationals gold medalist Mirai Nagasu won the bronze.
Our ladies at World's finished well off the pace with troubled Kimmy Meissner finishing 7th overall. Beatrisa Liang was 10th or 11th. Ashley Wagner (our national bronze medalist) was near the bottom of the final 20. The gold medalist, Mao Asada of Japan, skated beautifully following an opening fall that sent her sliding into the side of the rink. Carolina Kostner of Italy scored many many points for some reason or other and finished with the silver. A Korean lady won the bronze.
We had no "real" pairs hopes (our national champs were ineligible due to "age"), but our team made a relatively decent showing. The Canadians won the bronze.
In Ice Dancing, we had our greatest hope in Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto. They were favored to win gold, but it was not to be. They had a very, very rare fall in the first of three dances. Sadly, the first dance is compulsories, and any mistake is seriously weighted against the team. They finished fourth overall. Canada, happily, took the silver.
The men's competition was our one true hope to take home a medal. With Nationals title holder Evan Lysacek withdrawn from the competition, only Nationals Silver Medalist Johnny Weir was poised to help the U.S maintain three positions on next year's men's team. Weir was phenomenal in his short program and finished second behind Canada's also phenomenal Jeffrey Buttle. Reigning World Champion Brian Joubert of France was in 6th position, only four points behind Buttle and less than two points behind Weir. Swiss skater Stephane Lambiel (5th place) and Japan's champ Daisuke Takahashi (3rd place) were also in that mix.
There was a Czech skater named Tomas Verner who was in good position to medal (4th place after the short) and the crowd loved him, but he fell apart -- badly -- during his free skate, popping virtually every jump. Lambiel and Takahashi also faltered after scintillating short programs.
Johnny Weir did a very cautious, almost clean free skate. He attempted the quad but the toe of his other boot touched the ice as he landed. That's called a two-foot. It turns out that the judges did not credit Weir for a quad (which is the norm when you complete the revolutions), but for a triple. They then deducted points for the two-footed landing. It was not the only controversial judging call, but it stood. Weir wasn't in "competition mode" during the free skate. He was more in a "don't mess it up and for-pity's-sake-save-the-men-three-spots mode". He did not skate with his customary speed, but his marks were strong and he was in first place after his skate and stayed there through Lambiel and Takahashi. (At that point Weir was guaranteed a medal and the U.S. earned three spots for the men next year. It was Verner's collapse that truly assured those spots because he elevated another U.S. skater into 10th place).
When Joubert hit the ice, you knew he was either gonna suck bigtime or he was gonna absolutely rock.
Joubert absolutely rocked. He did a perfect quad with extraordinary height. After a rather disastrous performance at European championships a month earlier, Joubert could do no wrong. His spins were beautiful, his footwork was difficult, dizzying and dazzling. When he came off the ice, he knew he had done something amazing. His score went up and he was well ahead of Weir...by just under 10 points.
Only Buttle remained, and he had been four points ahead of Joubert. Paul Wylie announced that Buttle had no quad. He did, instead, a triple-double-double combination. Later , he did a triple-triple. And there were five other triples besides. His footwork was effortless...and complex. His choreography was intricate and superb. And his skate was perfection. He had a variety of spins/spinning positions that were breathtaking.
When it was over, announcer Terry Gannon said, "Buttle has done all he could possibly do...but will it be enough." (I sat wondering why it wouldn't be enough). Dick Button said that since Joubert's component scores had been so high, he did not believe Buttle's component scores could carry him into first place, meaning Buttle would have had to score too many more points. (Hmmm, I was doubting my reaction to the skate). Button said he felt there was no way Buttle could outscore Joubert, even given the four-point advantage. Wylie agreed with Button.
I was a bit stunned, to tell the truth, because as good as Joubert was, I thought Buttle was AMAZING. I don't recall ever seeing a better male skate than this one. Buttle had not one wasted movement but performed a program that was as fine as any ever choreographed or skated. It was as awesome, to me, as was Michelle Kwan's nationals skate to "Lyrica Angelica" in 1998 (the best overall performance I've ever seen).
The scores went up. Buttle outscored Joubert -- INCREDIBLY -- in technical points...MANY MORE points than you'd ever imagine (just over 10 points more -- for all the intricate footwork and magnificent spins that he did). And oddly enough, Joubert had beaten Buttle by one point in components. The U.S. trio of Wylie, Gannon and Button were nearly dumbstruck.
With his score from the short program, Buttle beat Joubert by 14 points.
Oh, Canada! Good for you!

It was COLD this morning! I didn't want to get out of bed. I just don't do cold at all.

Let's Put on our Brightly Colored Pantaloons and Pointy Hats and....Dance till the Cows Come Home
Don't forget the ham chunks and cheese cubes...or whatever that is

"The Randy Vicar and the Funky Lady Lawyer!"

I choose to take that as a compliment ;D
-
Thanks Danise! I'm basically afraid to get the surgery and my eyes get too tired for contacts... so I'm pretty much a glasses wearer for life.
I understand about being afraid of the surgery. My old eye doctor told me that since I'm a -8 that the very best I could hope for if everything went 100% right is to be corrected to a -4. Good news? Well, at -4 I'd still have to wear glasses!
That doctor retired and the new doctor was gung ho for me to do the surgery. When I asked him if the above was true, he never mentioned anything about having it done again..
-
I choose to take that as a compliment ;D
It was so intended!

Well, it's bed time for bonzo. Everyone have a GREAT evening!
-
Good heavens...The Jonas Brothers...how did they become a sensation?/
-
I was wondering the same thing. How did the shoot go? It was today, wasn't it?
I will email you his post regarding the shoot.
-
Quite agree. I think we'll be seeing more of our Jeremy Abbott.

Snark Note: Ms Meissner's first name is spelled Kimmie
I bet I got Daisuke Takahashi right, though! :)

Let's Put on our Brightly Colored Pantaloons and Pointy Hats and....Dance till the Cows Come Home
Also "ham chunks and cheese"! ;D

As for tonight's "American Idol"...
Some contestants played it safe.
Some contestants were much better this week.
Some contestants finally "broke through" this week.
One contestant made a very, very, very smart song choice.
And one or two contestants were brilliant, imho
-
I'm watching The Biggest Loser Dances with the Stars. (I'm going back and forth).
-
I have just been told by Microsoft that the problem we are encountering in upgrading the kids' XBox Live account is completely peculiar, and has no explanation, and that it will need to be "escalated" to "the highest corporate levels." I therefore expect to be quitting my job as I will soon be a bribed paid consultant to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
(At least this guy spoke English. Praise the Lord).
I thought most Indians spoke English! ;)

And, at one point and time, Chooster was a running gag.

I'm cleaning out my books, paperbacks for now. I'm beginning with prolific authors and making a list of their books I have read. Since I still don't have, them all, or know where they are, I'm finding it difficult to figure out which ones I have read or not. At the moment I'm working on Dean Koontz.
I found I still haven't read a couple of Sue Harrison's last trilogy, plus she had completed another novel, THE CLOTH, which wasn't published. I don't know what happened to it.
-
The highest corporate levels of Microsoft? Wow! Maybe you can ask them why Vista won't work with my USB6600 scanner.
I've got news for you--Vista doesn't work with any scanner. ;D
-
I gave up on Koontz, now I'm working on Maeve Binchy. I should have done this years ago, before my memory started to leave me. Not only don't I remember ALL the details of every book I have read, I can't remember which books I have read. ::)

Thanks Danise! I'm basically afraid to get the surgery and my eyes get too tired for contacts... so I'm pretty much a glasses wearer for life.
I have contacts and wear them for shows and when we do Liangong (http://www.liangong.com) here at work every Thursday (it's like T'ai Chi but less intensive and no getting down on the ground like yoga...it's not a work-sponsored program, several of us pay for the instructor to come). My eyes get tired after a long day, but not too tired to not wear them when I need to. I'm really just too lazy to put them in every day.

I am virtually positive that there are no virgins, land- or otherwise, in Southern California.
All that virgin land got plowed some time ago.
Did I really just say that? :o

Can anyone who watches AMERICAN IDOL tomorrow and posts about it do me a favor:
My sister heard on the radio today that Kimberley locke will be performing on IDOL tomorrow wearing the winner of PROJECT RUNWAY's dress.
The reunion show just aired this week and we have NOT seen the 2 part finale. If you post about idol could you please not mention the winner of PROJECT RUNWAY. I would really appreciate it.
It's actually sort of funny that i've managed to go this whole time and have no idea who won. I guess i will just ff thru IDOL tomorrow cause i really don't wanna know.
Thank you.

No to frozen burgers - yes to runny eggs and raw oysters (just not on the same plate).
der Brucer
Or, throw the raw oysters into the eggs, then roll the oysters in cracker crumbs, and bake them in a hot 500 degree oven.

Well, I'm leaving work. It's double-stamp Tuesday at Port of Subs (http://www.portofsubs.com)! You get a stamp every time you purchase a small, medium or large sub but if you go on Tuesdays, you get TWO stamps for each purchase! When you get a card fully stamped with 12 stamps, you get a free sub! :D
AND they have the best white chocolate/macadamia nut cookies...in my humble opinion. ;)

Good news DR JRand re: your niece's hubby. ~~~~~~~`

DR MBarnum
Long long time ago (a Don McLean Reference), the readers were accused of being a bunch of fags. Those of us who were posting at the time assumed the poster had meant to type "Figs'.
I think DR td may have been around at the time.
I do remember it was figs and not raisins.
I still blame Jose. (but he was not there at the time).
Laters!
No need to blame Jose this time. . .I take credit, blame me for the figs. . .but don't blame me for the raisins. ;D
-
Health vibes for DR Danise. ~~~~~~~~

I'll have to catch up tomorrow morning. I've got too much sleep to catch up on right now, even after this afternoon's nap.
Hasta la.
-
Hmm... Emeril is currently preparing two (raw) chicken breasts. However, the breasts don't seem to be a matched pair. One is "chicken white" and the other is "chicken yellow". I just tuned in, so maybe one is from a "regular" chicken, and the other one is from Perdue? ;)
When I lived in New Jersey, I could never stand to cook with those damn Perdue chickens. Or, if I did cook with them, I avoided eating them.
-
But before I go, I received a deliciously lovely package from Vixmom!
Thanks, Deb!! :-* ;D :-* ;D :-*
-
Glad the photo shoot went well, TCB!
-
Until later!
-
So TCB is gone fishin', eh? :D
Well, actually I did just get back from having lobster, scallops, and jumbo shrimp. Believe me, you won't find any of those in Lake Washington except on some of the yachts' barbecues.
-
Uranus is particularly active this week, but I have hesitated to post the details.
Could it be because of. . . . . .

Hi folks,
Just poping in to say "Hello".
I had to give up the bed idea--for now.
I went to the doctor today and even though I'm on the meds to keep me from getting kidney stones, I was told I have them again. Which means another sound surgery. Not bad but I will have to take 2 days off from work.
That means I'm also out for going to the wedding in July. I won't have enough time on the books to go.
Sigh. I can't believe what a health nightmare I've become. It's always SOMETHING and I'm getting so tired of it.
I still haven't gotten the results from the other week when I had that reaction to what ever it was.
Sigh.
Danise, couldn't you have the kidney procedure on a Friday, recoup on the weekend, and go back to work on Monday? I'm just saying.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ VIBES TO DR DANISE ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Could it be because of. . . . . .
THE FIGS?
No....
It's because you're a lesbian.
-
I'm a Polish lesbian.
-
I don't know from gags.
-
I have absolutely no idea what - or why??? - Paula Abdul is wearing tonight. Just sayin'.
agreed
-
Someone at the State of Washington's Health and Human Services Department has a shortcut to my FF article on their desktop. At least I think that's what a weird datum in my tracking program means.
-
Thank you, DR Ron Pulliam, for that very comprehensive summary of the World Skating Championships. I opted not to watch any of the final skates. I had read the results in the newspaper so I knew what was going to happen, and just didn't watch. (I did watch the Men's short programs.)
Since they changed the scoring system, I have really become disenchanted with skating. The nationals and worlds used to rank right up there with the Oscars and Tonys as far as yearly events I anticpated for the entire year. Now, I watch some of the nationals and almost never watch the Worlds.
-
I began my evening by watching DAISY KENYON. Wonderful Fox DVD with dramatic black and white photography well rendered on the disc. Only a small scratch or two ruined an otherwise gorgeous transfer.
-
Then I watched another NUMB3RS episode. This one had the team working on a kidnapping while their leader Don Epps was in a lengthy therapy session. No mystery to the story, but a nice rundown of his relationships to each member of the team.
-
IDOL.
The best performances tonight belonged to three men:
David Cook (by far)
David Archuleta (didn't get enough credit from the judges though I didn't think he showed much connection to the audience tonight)
Michael Johns
Other noteworthy efforts:
Syesha had her best night
Chakezie was definitely better than last week, but for me he's a Ruben Studdard wannabe.
The worst for me:
Ramiele (by far). She's easily the worst singer left.
Christy Lee (continues to have pitch problems but fewer than last week)
Brooke (I didn't like her song much at all and NO connection with the audience).
-
BTW, I was able to watch the 90 minute IDOL show in about 42 minutes.
-
While I was waiting for my 10 p.m. show to come on, I began watching BLADES OF GLORY on HBO in HD. Completely ridiculous opening quarter hour, but I'll finish it tomorrow.
-
JERICHO had a stirring series finale tonight. I'm glad I caught this second season of the show. Very gripping scenario with some great characters and relationships.
One negative note: the moronic engineer at my local CBS affiliate forgot to flip the HD switch until 26 minutes into the show.
Naturally, they will be getting an e-mail of complaint about that.
-
Page Eighteen Dorothy Dance!!!
-
Tomorrow will be a fun day of viewing for me regardless of what comes in the mail. I will likely finish BLADES OF GLORY, and then I will watch THE DEPARTED on Blu-ray. The disc has been sitting here for many months, long enough for another Oscar champ to have been named, so it's time to watch the 2006 winner.
-
I forgot to mention that I did watch today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. No gay boys and they were not in the previews for tomorrow either.
-
As for tonight's "American Idol"...
One contestant made a very, very, very smart song choice.
And one or two contestants were brilliant, imho
I'll guess:
A. Kristy Cook
B. Michael Johns and David Cook

Made with Olympia oysters and done in a skillet it's called "Hangtown Fry". A Goldrush staple from Placerville CA (where Woody's Great-Grandfather was sheriff).

What a nice photo, JRand!

I need to download my fireware upgrade for the PS3 now. Then, I'll head down to bed.
Good night!

Have them check this site:
www.ny.com/hotels/budget.html
Thank you. I'll have her take a look. :)
-
No, I don't know anyone who has stayed there. Years and years ago someone who worked at my office lived there for a couple of months. She said it was clean, safe, and very, very, very secure. It's run by the Salvation Army after all and there are no, I repeat, no men allowed past the lobby. It seems like a set up for Bosom Buddies.
Thank you Ben. I'll have her check it out.
-
I just took advantage of eBay's 1 cent listing sale and spent the last half hour listing about 45 screeners I will never want to watch again, along with a few older DVDs of mine I no longer have interest in. I must say that eBay has made it much easier to list things through the years, what with their Muze link now that provides all the info automatically.
I also used the 10% off coupon and went ahead and got a Samsung dual HD format player for about 75% off list price. So even if it sucks, I won't feel totally ripped off. :)
-
Well... Another day of auditions tomorrow for me, and since it's an EPA, I'm guessing I'll be having quite the full day. So...
Goodnight.
-
I was about to say DR JOSE....you should be asleep you have work tomorrow, young man.
-
Thanks DR JENNIFER....yes we are hoping things continue to be fine with Ryan!
Thanks to DR GEORGE....I may change my avvie....thanks DR MBARNUM.

DR JMK - Frances would be so happy to be a short cut!

DR JMK - Frances would be so happy to be a short cut!
Yes, but remember--no one datumed Frances.
No groaning, or Groening, please.

Back from a hard but good rehearsal in which we blocked about seventeen pages - I always forget just how complicated the final twelve page scene is - so much happens so quickly and people are moving here and there and it all has to be done with extreme precision and be funny. EVeryone is feeling their way now, but we got it all done and it will be fine.
-
Nice to come home to eighteen pages of postings.
-
Will we never get to page nineteen?
-
What am I, doing a monologue?
-
I am my own frenzy.

Like your new glasses Cilla!

I was catchin' up! :)

When I was in Utah, DBF and I were driving to Provo and we could pick up a station from LA, KNX
-
THey were doing Traffic reports at 9 pm.... One of the reports was talking about an accident on Ventura and it snarled traffic back to another road.
-
I was really surprised at how clear the signal was coming over the mountains
-
When I was younger I loved to listen to AM radio and try to pick up far away station. I used to pick up stations in TExas, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, SD and many eastern states
-
I have also done the same on Shortwave radio.. I have listened to some interesting broadcasts over time
-
I wonder if we are close
