And now I must make cookies!  Der Brucer has commanded that I make cookies!

I'm making them my way, not according to the recipe on the bags.  So There!

That's a Randy Newman reference, that last one.

Best of good-health vibes to DR Danise, who I hope is getting a sound night's sleep before her surgery.

During her 88 hours here, the mother-in-law helped herself to all sorts of food in the refrigerator, without asking, without being told she could.
Now we've discovered that, in using and cleaning one of our expensive wedding gift skillets (not from her; I don't think we got anything expensive from her), she scratched it and brillo'd off the non-stick surface.

I may be errant and truant soon, as I must attend some awful wedding in Cornwell Heights, wherever that is, and have long rehearsals for the Triad shows that will include DR Jenny, regaling us with a Finn tune.

Finished the script. Now must eat something. It's a good feeling to be done (for now). I'm sure I'll get notes before it goes to the Network. It would be lovely not to. So why don't I just say -- It's going straight to the Network. I'll send out those positive vibes. Anyway, I hand it in tomorrow.

And a sad sigh for DR Noel.  I hope that you and your DW Joy can tell her, on the occasion of her next visit, to find a nice hotel.  Sometimes the best defence is a good mile or two of distance.

A PS to DR Noel:

At some point, we (meaning ALL the DRs) should start collecting a list of songs that would be good for auditions, school performances, etc.  You can't be the only one advising students on material.  I've a hunch there are some lurkers out there who could use the advice, and we've got a great pool of knowledge here at HHW.

So, you might want to set some parameters, some guidelines, and then let us all loose to see what we come up with!

When you're ready, we'll be there for you.

I'm going to be a total Wussburger and say "goodnight."  I've had a headache all day and the ibuprofin that I've taken hasn't helped.  Maybe some sleep will.  Best to all!  Nighters!

I was thinking about a Marcy and Zina song, but the last time I had to deal with them it was just too difficult, so I pulled it and replaced it with something I wouldn't have ANY difficulty with.  I wish it weren't so, but I have no time to deal with people who in any way will be anything but forthcoming.  I also dropped Marcy an e several days ago, to which there has been no response, probably as she's been so busy with her show.

For those who've asked, some rehearsal photos.  First, here's the group doing an interview with Donald.

That pic is def the Jose we all know and love.

Wussburgering myself again, have an early day tomorrow.

At least dinner went off OK: a piccata variation using boneless, skinless chicken thighs, lots of lemon and garlic, with steamed broccoli and roasted red rose taters.  Turned out pretty good, with leftovers packed in the fridge for lunch at work someday soon.

I'm sure that Jose will have A LOT of advice, parameters and guidlines to give in this area!

My number one rule for picking an audition song is:

"Sing something you know and that you love to sing."

Don't sing something you just learned. (Although some people have that knack...)
Don't sing something you think you should be singing.
Don't sing something just because it's worked for other people.
Don't sing something just because you heard someone else sing it.

There are songs you like.
There are songs you like to sing.
There are good songs.
There are good songs for you.
There are good songs for auditions.
There are good songs for auditions for you.

Know the difference.  For yourself.  Just because you like the song doesn't mean it will work for you.  Just because you like the song doesn't mean you should use it for an audition (maybe for a callback instead).

-As they say in Avenue Q, "It's a fine, fine line..."  Yes, it takes some trial and error to find the right material, but I've always thought that if there's any sort of negative stress and strain involved while finding and choosing and learning the material, then some of that "stuff" is bound to be projected in your audition.

I've seen many an audition where there is a sense of the singer singing "under duress".  They're just not enjoying themselves.  Yes, auditions are by their nature not a pleasant thing, but that doesn't mean they have to be dreaded.

And then there are the other considerations: style/period, appropriateness for the show you're auditioning for, finding the right 16 bars, acting, range, etc... But it all comes back to:

"Sing something you know and that you love to sing."

*And, actually - and sort of unfortunately - due to the run of What If? I will not be able to play the Fall SETC auditions in Charlotte, NC, this September.  Anyone out there know anyone who would like to and can play for about 250 people in two days? ;)

OH!  And I'm a Virgo too!

JRand and I were both born on August 26.

Hmm.... August 26... I better check to see if I have a show that night... I never work on my birthday... ;)

Actually, I turned 35 while I was in Australia last year, and now I get to have my birthday in L.A.  I guess I'll plan on London and/or Paris for next year's celebration.
