Title: THE PITHY AND THE PISSY
Post by: bk on August 18, 2008, 12:17:56 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a little pith and a little piss, and now it is time for you to post until the pithy/pissy cows come home.

Hmmm, guess I have the playing field all to myself.  I promised I wouldn't do more than fifteen and I won't.  That is, if I can think of fifteen - this is not as easy as some others we've done.

And now I need to finish packing up before we head to the train station.  I may or may not have internet access on the train - even with my iPhone - since the Amtrak tracks always seem to travel through a lot of dead spots, and if that happens, I know I'll have some posts to catch up on once I'm back in NYC.  -Which is a good thing.

Bruce knows when the game is starting.  I don't.
He posts his first 15 names before I'm even out of the blocks.  That's the Home Field Advantage.  But it's OK with me.  Just more of a challenge.  So we do 15, then close down until morning.  I can level the playing field somewhat because my morning starts 3 hours before his does.  So I wait until someone else says "Good Morning" and posts a name.  I think that's only fair.  This has happened.  So I'm going to post a handful of names, but only those I think Bruce might get, or already have up his sleeve.

Recap of the Birthday Dinner:

My original thought was to head to Japonica, a sushi restaurant near the Boardwalk here in Rehoboth Beach.  While walking through town (we've been parking outside the town limits, due to the parking meter rates having skyrocketed lately, and that's assuming you can even find a parking spot  :P), der Brucer also tossed out a couple of other names: Delfino's, a new Italian spot, and Porcini House (http://www.capegazette.com/storiescurrent/200803/porcini032808.html), where chef Jay Caputo plays with Mediterranean ideas.  Chef Jay is regularly dropping by the store for fresh produce, and we've gotten to know each other a bit, but der B and I have never stopped by his restaurant, so I decided to change our plans a bit and we headed on over.  Very nice place, great ambiance, good service.

The birthday dinner ACT I

Dip - three ways
(http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b70/GEORDIEMC/Family/SFWBDay0001.jpg)
The three dips being guacamole, hummus, and spicy cheese.  A nice way to start, and very popular - two other tables near us also had this as a starter.

Tuna Tartare (sorry Charley)
That's a tartare of tuna on top of diced cucumber, with a citrus reduction.  Good combination of flavors.  The ring-mold presentation is a bit old-fashioned - maybe if I suggest to Chef Jay that he try a box mold instead, just for the surprise of it.

Duck Confit for Woody
(http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b70/GEORDIEMC/Family/SFWBDay0004.jpg)

Duck confit can be terribly salty.  Chef Jay's was lucious and crispy, not salty at all.  Here it's served with a combination of scallion, white beans, and roasted squash.  Delicious.

Yep, it really was Green Goddess dressing!  How funny that it should show up, after our discussion of same just a few days ago!  I'll have to tell Chef Jay about that next time I see him.

So is the Natural History Museum in New York set up like a ride now to make it seem like the movie?

Birthday dinner Act III

Lemon Tart
(http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b70/GEORDIEMC/Family/SFWBDay0006.jpg)
Obviously, we got a little eager here!  Wonderful lemon tart, reminded me very much of my mother's lemon merangue pie, only without the merangue of course.  The tart took on a double meaning here.

That's Mousse, you silly!  Der Brucer let me have a small spoonful - very rich, dark chocolatey.  I don't blame him for grabbing the plate back!

Nothing a few sit-ups won't cure.  A few thousand, that is.   ::)

USNA OUT is the gay Annapolis grad group.  Der Brucer is a member.  Really nice shirt, too, great fabric made for runners, clingy and cool (in both senses of the word).

Margaret Tyzack.  Der Brucer and I saw her opposite Maggie Smith in the final preview of Lettice and Lovage, the comedy by Peter Shaffer.  She's done lots of other things, too, like some film work with Kubrick, but seeing her live on stage as the sensible half of the pair was wonderful.

I love her, and she's been around a long time so I LOVE watching an old movie or TV show, and she shows up.

She's in my very favorite episode of MISS MARPLE (Joan Hickson version) ever: NEMESIS.

I just read something I know fans of the TV series LIFE will be interested to know.

When the new TV season begins in late September, NBC is going to run LIFE for a few weeks after HEROES on Monday nights. After it plays there into mid-October, it will be moved to its regular Friday at 10 slot.

Christian Slater's new series MY OWN WORST ENEMY will then take over the Monday at 10 slot after HEROES.

One tiny correction that I want to mention, Miiko Taka is actually not Japanese but rather American. She was born in Seattle, Washington and her real first name is Betty.

Hi from slightly less hellaciously hot southern Oregon.  We have been very busy riding bikes (not horses), visiting the really cool (literally and figuratively) lava tubes of northern California, and just kicking back.  I also went insane at the local Fred Meyer the other day--they are remodeling and having 60% off sales all over the place (they never get that high up in PDX), so I got some incredibly cool shirts made of bamboo that originally sold for $50-60, each for about $8.00 after markdowns and final 60% off.   Have any of you worn bamboo clothing?  It's unbelievably soft.

I have a bamboo shirt that I got from Fred Meyer!  I love it.  It is very soft...but wrinkles easily.  I wonder if they're having a sale up here in Washington!  I have a Fred Meyer Rewards coupon for 40% (I think) off one apparel item.  AND those rewards coupons can be used on items that are on sale!  I'll check it out. :D

Cute story from today's NY Times "Metropolitan Diary," for those who haven't seen it:

Quote
DEAR DIARY:

I often have my morning coffee and read my Times in a place called Le Pain Quotidien at Eighth Street and Fifth Avenue. There is a big community-type table down one side that I sit at because I can spread the paper out.

Today several people sat across from and beside me, and I became aware that the man, about 50, had a cockney accent. So I said, “You’re from the East End of London,” which was correct and brought a big smile and a fun conversation with him and his wife and the young friend of their son, about 30, who works here at Morgan Stanley.

We chatted for 15 minutes or so (the man had seen a film I had made when I lived in England, “Women in Love,” and asked lots of questions about it, particularly about the nude wrestling scene, which people who have seen it always do ask questions about) before a young woman sitting a few seats over to my left, about 30, came over and asked if she could request a favor of the man and woman:

“Would you read this scene for me? I’m auditioning on Monday and I have to get the accent right.” She, too, had heard their accent.

The scene was from “Sweeney Todd.” There was much good humor as the middle-aged couple read Todd and Mrs. Lovett, quite well, actually, particularly the woman (the man is an air-conditioning engineer at the Wellcome Institute in Cambridge, and they had seen the show and movie both), and then the young actress read it with him, also quite well, and was commended by the Brits.

Then she said: “Thank you. I owe you something.” And so she started singing to us, softly and very beautifully, the “Worst Pies in London” song, completely unself-consciously. It was all very moving.

Then I told them that I knew Stephen Sondheim and that I would tell him this story. Which I did. “What a charming story,” he said to me. “Send it to the Metropolitan Diary of The New York Times. You never get a chance to see your name in print, so it might be worth it.”

Hello, everyone.

A busy day here, no end of little odds and ends that need attention. I'm really trying to make a dent in my to-do list; there are things on it that I meant to do ages ago, but somehow did not. (How'd that happen??)

So no time to play the initials game--at least not right now.

However, I will mention that I watched THE LEGEND OF 1900 last night. An unusual story, to be sure, but interesting. Like THE RED VIOLIN, it was largely about the music, at least for me. And, like SINGDAW, I heard about it here at HHW and put it in my queue.

In the absence of both DRs ArnoldMBrockman and FJL, a modest suggestion for the SONG OF THE DAY:

"The Shady Dame from Seville," from Victor/Victoria.

How I wish I could! He's getting a rather tired of taking up my slack. We talked about that just yesterday. I'm trying to find someone to help me with some household and garden chores. A friend in the Midwest suggested I try some teenagers. Boy, was that a laugh! Teenagers in Washington don't do manual labor; they go to prep schools and expect to be CEO right out of college. I asked Matt about the kids who go to public school; he said they're hanging out at the malls. I shall keep trying, though.

OK, I caught your MT roll.  Hey, I gotta sleep some time.  I shoulda had Malachi Throne and Mark Tinker.
When I think of all the Malachis that went through my mind......
We're in widely different time zones.  And it seems that the notes go up at varying times.  And even when they do, at least on my computer the old notes are there while the new discussion board has opened.
Very confusing.  And, occasionally it's even possible that some of us have other things to do.  You can't expect everyone to keep your hours, or be a slave to the starting gun.  Or maybe you can. But it's an advantage.  One that I don't begrudge you.  Just don't begrudge me rising with the Easterners

If it does, then the Mister Tanner of the Harry Chapin song counts as well.

It counts anyhow... "Mr. Martin Tanner, baritone, of Dayton Ohio" (it took me five years to work up the courage to sing that song in public... Harry Chapin, Steve Sondheim, and Abie Rotenberg (Jewish composer) are the three people who have written songs that are too painful for me to sing aloud).

When I was recital-ing on a semi-regular basis, there were a few stand-bys that would get my tear ducts going while I was playing them. OH!  And the vocal repertoire!  Some of the French composer's "responses" to World War I are truly heart-breaking.

*However, I don't think I'll count the two times I broke down in the flute teacher's studio while accompanying the Mozart G Major and the Dutilleux "Sonatine".  Those incidents fall under a totally different category. ;)

I skimmed through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Luke and Noah were present along with a new man (beau?) for Lucinda. Or is he going to make a play for Noah? The whole set-up seemed way too contrived.

Every unbelievable plot on that stupid soap is completely contrived!

Back from my errands, which included a stop at our town's Vera Bradley dealer to work out a problem with a special order they'd placed for me.  The result may prompt a total change in my "wardrobe strategy" for our trip to NYC next week.

The shop is really a home decor studio, selling many decorative items and furniture.  Some of the furniture is on consignment and I may have found a replacement for my family room chair.  Just waiting for Richard to come home from an errand and we're going back out to take another look at the chair and decide if it will coordinate with the couch (I'm taking a swatch of the couch fabric.)

Keeping two lists will be very awkward.  What I've been doing is splitting the monitor space between a window for the Internet, and another window for the spreadsheet we use for the list.  Dividing the screen into three spaces... nope, just doesn't work, makes the three spaces too small.  The only other method means switching back and forth between two lists.

BK, switching games like this was thoughtless.  I'll try to muddle through this time, but please don't do it again.

One of my lovely new mysteries has a lovely note which puzzles me: "For Susan, hope you like the Hoffstetter #2!" I haven't been contemplating a sex change and I've never felt like a Susan before. Jane hudson, maybe, but never Susan. I swear.

And won't Susan be surprised when she gets her book?

Then remember that when they were originally playing the game in the car, no one was keeping a list nor a count of the names.  They were keeping track by themselves... with their brains.  ;)
It was also just the two of them.

Meanwhile, I am rendering fat.

No, seriously, I've got a pot of diced-up pork back and am rendering out the fat in a very slow oven.

It's step one so that I can make pork confit tomorrow.

Which will then make (hopefully) wonderful pork rillets.

Which will make me more trendy than anyone in LA.

(After the rendering, the leftover pork skin is supposed to make great cracklings.  I have high hopes.)

TO RENDER FAT, per Ruhlman and Polcyn, authors of Charcuterie:

Quote
Ingredients:

1 pound duck or goose skin and fat, scraps of pork fat, or suet

Combine the fat and 1/4 cup water in a heavy-bottomed saucean and set it over very low heat, uncovered, for several hours to render.  The fat will liquify and the water will evaporate, leaving pure fat.  Don't let the fat come to a boil or turn brown, or it will taste harsh.

Strain the fat through a sieve lined with cheesecloth.  Let cool, thenstore covered in the refrigerator.  The golden brown skin - cracklings - remaining in the cheesecloth can be saved to use as a flavoring for braised cabbage or sauteed potatoes.

Me, I find the best way to keep something cooking at a low temperature is to set it in the oven, at that temp.  Which is what I'm doing now.

Tom MacRae.  Wrote the two-part story "Age Of Steel"/"Rise of the Cybermen" for the second series of Doctor Who.  Also wrote the teleplay for Miss Marple: At Bertram's Hotel, so he's not just a sci-fi scribe.

Wait a sec, I did my usual reversing of the initials again, didn't I!!!  Oops, my bad!!!   ::)
So, Tom MacRae.

Good Evening!

Well, since I needed to forage for some dinner, and since I had been sitting on a train for six hours earlier today, I went ahead and headed out earlier to not only get some food, but to stretch my legs.

I eventually ended up down in Chelsea, then walked over to Union Square, then back up to Gramercy Park, then back over to Chelsea.  It was/is a gorgeous night.  Yes, the humidity did start to set in a bit, but it was a great night for a walk in a great city.

*And the Sweet Corn Frozen Custard at Shake Shack.... YUMMERS!!!!  :)

Glad you liked it! I didn't get to see it since I'm still at work, trying to get ahead for next week. Not only do we have a holiday coming up but I am planning to go to Nashville for a concert one night. So I will  probably have to work every night this week to keep up. Blah. But OT, so yay.

And while I was waiting for the A Train at Times Square, I happened to run into Baayork Lee!  Yeah! During the ride uptown,  she filled me in on all the closing night festivities of A Chorus Line, as well as her schedule over the next couple of months with the tour.

I ate the low-cal (45 cals each), low-fat (3 fat grams each) hot dogs - quite good and under 700 calories, all told.  I had some licorice afterwards, about 200 calories worth.  If I weren't being strong I would so go get a double ice cream cone at Baskin-Robbins just to take the bad taste of this screwed up day out of my mouth.  I could eat another 200 calories without a problem, but a double ice cream cone would have about 700 and about 50 grams of fat - that I don't need.  Although I WANT it.  Bad.

Tony Musante---actor.  I don't think he was mentioned.  Hard to tell without a list.

I know that tone is always hard to read on here, but...

Remember, DR SWW volunteered to keep the list.  He can very easily volunteer NOT to keep the list too.

*It also doesn't take too much effort to cut and paste your own list for your own reference as your read each post.

**And if it turns out a name has already been mentioned, there are more than enough DRs who will be more than happy to point out the redundancy.  ;)

Spent a very tearful early evening watching THE KENNEDYS. All that death, all those funerals. To have them all concentrated on this disc was pretty overwhelming to relive.

Next I watched the first two hours of LBJ. I knew much less about his career prior to the Presidency than some of the others, so it was quite fascinating, especially all the ballot box stuffing that lost him an election and later won him his first Senate victory. I didn't quite get to the end of part II on the disc (there are four parts in all.)

Then, I watched THE CLOSER at 10 and sped through the commercials. Very dramatic show, and what a horrendous situation to be in! Honestly, I don't know what I would have done, and that makes it  fine drama to leave such a question in the mind of the viewer.

And Fritz/Jon looked SPLENDIFFEROUS in that shower scene early in the episode! Ummmm!

Tomorrow I should be able to finish LBJ and go right into the NIXON set.

My gosh, after watching Oliver Stone's 3+ hour NIXON last week and then having two discs on him tomorrow to start wading through, I'm going to be SICK of Richard Nixon.

I will likely watch MAD MEN on HD tomorrow while I cook and eat lunch. Looking forward to this next episode.

No tone about my comment about needing another list.  Rather a comment about changing horses in midstream without warning.  And that a list has become commonplace.  But no complaint about the listmakers.  When inundated with about 30 unchallenged names and new initials, it's very difficult to try to compete, (and yes, that's what I'm doing with Bruce, not with anyone else.  That's why we throw little asides to each other.) without a frame of reference.  He probably should have compiled the list.

I'm closing with Toro Marino.  The exploited South American prizefighter in "The Harder They Fall".

Can we just call you Sue, then?

In your dreams, maybe, but not in mine.

Then, I watched THE CLOSER at 10 and sped through the commercials.

In which case you missed the teaser for the new coming-soon TNT show Truth in Advertising starring Eric McCormack and Thomas Cavanagh and written by the Closer team.
