Title: RHAPSODY IN BLUE
Post by: bk on November 12, 2008, 12:08:31 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were rhapsodic and blue, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently playing the Rhapsody In Moo by A. Steer.

Someday, I'll have to get either an upconverting DVD player or a Blu-ray player.  I've purchased a few (four or five) Blu-ray titles, ones that are either supposed to be extra-special visually, or just plain cheap. ;) I just got "March of the Penguins" on Blu-ray from Costco because it was only $11.99 (plus tax).

This from TCB last night,

Ben!  It is after 9:00 p.m. on a worknight.   Are you okay?

Yep, we were at a friend's for dinner. She's on 86th Street on the West side. We got home at about 8:55 and I signed in to see what my friends were up to. At approximately 9:30pm I was in bed sleeping while Mr. M was busy arranging his pictures and accessories from the trip to Wisconsin.

I have a meeting at 11am. After the meeting I will go to the Greenmarket and then I will go home to lunch.

While at the Greenmarket I will probably pick up a scone and some apples and pears and if the vendor still has some, I will pick up string beans, one of my favorite vegetables.

I will also pick up flowers from my favorite flower vendor. I love my Greenmarket. It's like being in a small town right here in Manhattan.

It's 7:25 and I'm all alone.

I will go and wash the bowl (when was the last time you heard that?) and move on with the Ford Foundation until the meeting.

I'm listening to the

1920s Radio Network (http://www.whro.org/home/html/liveradio/1920s_wma.html)

It's a Charles Pogue kind of radio station and others may enjoy it as well. I offer it to you for your consideration.

Later, gaters.

Good morning, Dear Vixmom, Ben and all!

I'm sorry I left so fast last night.  I think everything just caught up with me and I just got very tired, very fast.  One of those, "If I don't lay down RIGHT now, I'm going to fall down." things.

I feel pretty well rested now and am glad to be home.

I'll go get DD Sheena around noon.  I'm looking forward to the reunion.  This house is lonely without her.

I have to say that buying that GPS was one of the best things I could have done for myself.  It made the trip to Pittsburgh so much easier.  It will be a "must pack" item from now on.

I also loved the rental car.  It was so easy.  For some reason, I thought you had to go through a big check off list before you got the car and when you brought it back but it was nothing like that.  There was a bar code on the car and the guy I turned the car into just scanned it.

Since WALL-E is being released next week, I will use my DDD discount code to get a copy....but it doesn't work on pre-orders, so I will wait.

When I went to see MAMMA MIA! there was a great WALL-E display in the lobby with a life-size or bigger than LIFE Wall-E made of cardboard standing in the corner.....  I look forward to seeing it, mostly from the lively contemporary comments that were on HHW.

Speaking of Wall-E (yesterday), I saw it in the theater and LOVED it!  I can't wait to get the DVD. ;D

I absolutely loved the first half of WALL-E but I felt only so-so about the second.  The humans coming into the story seemed like an intrusion.  And then there was the pack of misfit robot pals that aid in the rescue--I hated seeing that part of the Pixar formula thrust in.  But all in all, it is a beautifully animated movie and Wall-E, for a character that had only two(?) words to his vocabulary, was incredibly actualized.  And its message was very powerful.  I think I got a little teary-eyed during the end credits.

I'm also drinking really bad coffee.

That's all we have in work is bad coffee.  We have one of those machines where you put in a single-serving packet and it spits out this dark liquid that tastes like hot water with a brown crayon melted in it.  The machine is somewhat fun to use.  The coffee drinking is anything but.

We do have a coffee club that has their own drip coffee maker, but I've belonged to groups liek that before and they never work out.  The person in charge of buying the supplies gradually gets fed up with people not paying up in time and starts buying cheaper and cheaper brands of coffee.  Eventually, there's a big blow-up and not one talks to each other and that's the end of the coffee club.

I used to have to organize those in my last job.  They could be a real pain.

Well, they were more fun when I was the assistant or, after I became in charge, had a supportive person in our PR department.  The last year or so, I've pretty much been on my own and it's a lot of work.  But, our clientele depends on the networking opportunity, so it's worth it.  I only hope one of the 3 people being interviewed today to replace me feels the same way!

Today, unless I hear otherwise, the sale of the 10 feet of land lying between my dad's house and the highway will close and I am very happy. Now, if we can only sell the remaining 3.5 acres! The closing should occur within the next 45 minutes. Bless those HHW vibes!

I hope you will excuse this commercial announcement, but:

I am excited and proud to announce the publication of my newest book, ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD: From the Secret Files of Harry Pennypacker.

I had more fun writing this book than anything else I have ever written and I know you will enjoy reading it, too.

Of course, I wouldn’t want you to just spend your valuable time frivolously.

You will learn the secrets Hollywood never wanted you to know when you read this book.  You will be amazed, but definitely better informed than you are now.

The book is now available for pre-order through my publisher and will be shipped in time for Chanukah/Christmas giving.

You can order it on-line by visiting  www.onceuponatimeinhollywood.com

OR, if you are uncomfortable doing business on the internet, you can phone in your order at:
(888) 934-0888 x 100.

Thank you, and enjoy!

I had to be up and out early this morning to go to the post office. Disney sent me both the Blu-ray and the DVD of WALL-E, but another reviewer handles the standard definition Disney product, so I had to forward that disc to him this morning. Thankfully and coincidentally, he lives in NC, too, so the disc should get to him tomorrow.

My question for ASK BK DAY....if you could have any of your favorite composers RE-SCORE a film in his own style....which composer and which film would you choose?

Good question - the one that immediately comes to mind is The Black Stallion.  Carmine Coppola's score is, at best, serviceable, but does nothing to help the amazing images on the screen and the emotions they evoke.  I think a Jerry Goldsmith (during that period) would have done an amazing score.

Of course, I could also name almost any movie from the last ten to fifteen years, all of which could have benefitted from a proper score with a great composer, without the constraints of the dreaded temp track they're forced to emulate.

Who has impressed you the most with their live concert performances?

Who would you avoid seeing in concert at all costs?

Who would you rush out to see in concert no matter the cost?

I've been disappointed in many cabaret acts, almost all of them, actually, if you consider those live concert performances, none more so than the version of Three Men And A Baby Grand I booked for the LACC cabaret series.  If you mean the bigger live concert performances, I haven't been to all that many, but I don't think I've ever been disappointed, really.  I've been impressed with many of the live concerts I've seen - and that includes Tony Bennett, Petula Clark, Joel Grey, and Michel Legrand, all in Las Vegas in the mid-1970s, The Manhattan Transfer, Peter Allen (what a dynamo he was), Randy Newman, and I'm sure I'm forgetting others.

I don't know if there's anyone I would rush to see today no matter what the cost.  I'm honestly trying to think and since I've had the opportunity to see a lot of heavyweights, like Streisand, and haven't done so...  Of course, if Jack Benny were alive and kicking it would be him.

I was checking the DVR and it kept telling me there was a problem with the disk.  I tried to reboot it but that didn't work either so I called cable company and they tried to do a remote reset to it as well.  That didn't work so I have to take the unit over to the office and get a new one.

I don't know what happened.  I don't remember hearing about any bad storms on the news while I was gone.  I kept an eye on the weather down here because of the hurricane that was messing around down by Cuba.  I know the odds were very slim at best for it to come here but you should never say never with those things.

Well, I guess I'd better get a move on.  I want to get this taken care of before I go get Sheena because I wanted to spend the time with her, not just get her then have to leave her to make a run over to Brandon.

Laters all!

THE BLACK STALLION....good choice...wow Goldsmith could have really done something fun with that.

I keep thinking that a stronger composer for some of the Disney films like FOLLOW ME BOYS! and OLD YELLER (not the Shermans work on the musicals) - could certainly have enhanced those films.

Not that George Bruns (Boys) and Oliver Wallace (Yeller) weren't good.....but their work and even Paul Smith's on 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA seemed very "television" to me.

I have just been assured by my publisher that the page IS secure.

Just discovered that, unlike last time, the DVDPlanet 25offsale code is only good once--so make sure to wait until you know you don't want anything else before you order from them.  As with the last sale, I've found a lot of stuff that's cheaper at Planet than DDD (including Criterion titles).

It's a Charles Pogue kind of radio station and others may enjoy it as well. I offer it to you for your consideration.

Later, gaters.

This is very cool!  I like this era of music.  There's a local AM station that plays music from the '20s to the '70s.  It's the only radio station that I listen to in my car.  Thanks for posting it. :D

Michael

Congratulations! ;D

I watched "Sweeney Todd" on HBO Saturday evening and found it vastly entertaining.  Jonathan Tunick's arrangements/orchestrations were dazzling.

Despite my preference for soaring voices on those songs, the actors were excellent in portraying their characters and most of them fared very nicely.

Still...some of the songs "just miss" because they're not being "sung" gloriously.

While I hesitate to make too much of a political statement I do find the whole situation ugly and unpleasant. While I decry Eckern's actions and am appalled that he would do such a thing, especially since he has a lesbian sister, I fear we are slipping down a very ugly path and playing into the very hands of the hateful, bigoted slugs who put Prop 8 on the ballot and then spread lies to pass the Initiative. We now come across as venal and small-minded and intolerant which must make Dobson and Pat Roberts and their minions very happy. I read Eckern's first statement and his resignation statement and I take him at his word. We cannot allow people to be fired for their politcal beliefs (I know he wasn't fired, he resigned) because then we can be fired for nothing more than being Gay or Lesbian or Bisexual or Transgendered (and we can be right now in many, many states in the U.S.)

I had a wonderful visit with Jo Loesser at the Loesser office, and a nice phone conversation with my sister-in-law Jo about how the closing went. My check is in the mail - hooray! - and I'm thinking that my trip to Ohio will run from Dec 13-Dec 28. That will get me to Miami University to visit before Christmas break, allow me to hang out with Jo and Randy and the family I want to see, and get me back to Manhattan before New Year's eve.  As for work while I'm there, I can ship the BABES IN TOYLAND materials to Ohio, if I've not finished the final edits before leaving, or whatever act of THE MOST HAPPY FELLA I'm on. I'm getting excited about this trip.

I was one of the shepherds in a college production many years ago.

I was one of the kings in a photograph staged for a "cute" family Christmas card.  We assembled the whole tribe en costume at a Mountain park just outside of the City for the photo.  Fortuitously, earlier that year in arts and crafts I had created this thing out of a soda pop bottle, a pie tin,  ball fringe and papier mache.  I have no idea what it was, but it looked sufficiently exotic photographed in black and white as gift for the Baby Jesus.  I'm sure the sight of us was enough to put the various picnickers at the park off their food!

Scott Eckern of California Music Theater has resigned over the Prop 8 flap.

That's too bad.  While I disagreed with him, he didn't do anything unlawful.

Yes, the better thing would have been to have a big meeting between him, the board, and some creatives who are particularly strong on the issue - some good could have come out of that.  Him resigning could be seen in a bad light, as if he were forced to do so because of zealotry - not what happened, but the pro 8 people would love to use that.

No, but his actions (vote and donation) spoke volumes to a good number of people who work in his theater.  He pretty much relegated them to second-class citizens and said they weren't good enough to have equal rights.

Strange, isn't it, that denying equal rights to a group of people because of "religious beliefs" should be legal in the United States in the 21st century?

I want this day to CALM THE HELL DOWN.  I did the long jog in the new shoes - very disturbing experience - very difficult getting used to the fit and feel of the new shoe - but halfway through the run they started to settle in and I think they'll be fine.  Certainly they put more of a spring in my step.  I then had to hurry to the bank, then to Teddy, who cut my hair very short.  I then came home to about forty e-mails, a flurry of Bacharach-related performer stuff.  Our producer, without consulting me or anyone else, added three people to the show - I'm now stuck with that and it does not make me happy.  I'm sure they're very talented but they are not names and they take up three very valuable solo spots, and put us up to twenty-seven songs right now.  I'll go to thirty (fifteen per act) if absolutely necessary, but I really want to cap it at twenty-eight.  I have said since day one that this is a two-hour show, and I will NOT let it go one minute past two hours (the intermission is above the two hours, and there'll be a five minute speech before we begin).

My take on what I read is that is didn't see it as denying equal rights, and in fact felt they already existed.  It seems to me he now has a greater understanding of the truth.  It is a shame he didn't have the discussions, or ignored them, before he made his donation.  While a little late for the vote, it seems his letter can help educate people & it would be best to be kind to him.

Just discovered that, unlike last time, the DVDPlanet 25offsale code is only good once--so make sure to wait until you know you don't want anything else before you order from them.  As with the last sale, I've found a lot of stuff that's cheaper at Planet than DDD (including Criterion titles).

I think there is a second code you can use: SAVE

The following were previously posted here:

DVDTALK
USATODAY
NYTIMES
SUPERSALE
PRICESEARCH
SUMMERSALE
YAHOO
ESPN
LATIMES
XM
SOUTHSIDE
WGN
JIM
DEALNEWS
WLS
PRICEGRABBER
DD1109
SAVE

And I received this by phone.

RED

I have used DVDTALK and SUPERSALE

DD1109 is not a 25% off code.  I tried using it last night, and it was only a $10 discount off any order.  Be sure you're getting credited 25% off every item you buy!!!

I wonder if short-term memory loss is contagious?

Or is it a side-effect of something else that's contagious?

Today I am going out for dinner and then to The Byham Theater to see (and hear) Miss Idina Menzel.  She has an early start-time (7:30), so it will be an early dinner and an early night.

Well, she and Anthony Rapp were the best things about the production of RENT that I saw.

Wow!  UPS was generous today:

All three Disney tins arrived!
My boxed set of Indiana Jones film score CDs (complete scores to all four films) arrived.
My holiday cards to send out this coming season have arrived.
Some T-Shirts ordered from The Territory Ahead arrived.

Several other DVDs "might" have arrived today had I not cancelled my orders for them Saturday afternoon.  I've decided to wait and see what kind of Black Friday deals are out there on Blu-ray players before ordering anything I'd love to watch on Blu-ray....things like "Wall-E", for instance.

It looks like I shall be playing one of the three kings in a production of Amahl and the Night Visitors in January.

I have, at one time or another over the years, played all three of the kings - though not at the same time!   :)

So - Pick the Queen Name That King:

DS Betsy has begun using "friend" as a verb now that she has become addicted to Facebook.  :)  In fact, she asked me last night, "Who is Jose Simbulan, and why has he friended me?"  :)

I am glad you warned me, Jeff.  Your lovely wife's photo keeps popping up asking if I want to friend her.  Since we have only met once, I have resisted the urge to do so, for fear the State Police might be called in to investigate her stalker.

That is fantastic, elmore!

Michael

Mr. Druxman, is it possible to get a copy autographed?

Certainly.  I'm in Los Angeles, so it will just be a matter of working out the logistics.

Good Evening!

Well, that was indeed a short audition session!  It ran from 5:00pm-5:35pm.  There were only three actor/singers, and since one of them brought his guitar to accompany himself, I only had to play for two of them.  Of course, that person was the last of the three, however, he sang a song of his creation, and it was a really cool audition.  It was nice being an audience member for a few minutes.  :)

I have done five loads of laundry.  I have done two loads of dishes.  I have put dinner in the oven.  I am a whirling dervish of domesticity.  I also went and gave another voice lesson to the mother of one of my two year olds in my classroom.  She's singing in local community college choir and is quite close to being tone deaf.  I've taught her the best I can, but there's not a lot I can do.

Tonight I'm making stuffed chicken breasts with cornbread dressing. It's a recipe I haven't tried before, but I had all the ingredients in the house so I didn't have to go to the store.  That was reason enough to try it.  It looks tasty, we shall see how it tastes in about an hour.

I once choreographed Three Wise Guys for the Christmas show titled HOLIDAY SURVIVAL GAME SHOW which was part of the Disco Nativity.

And when we dropped Baby Cheesits down on a fishing line - well twice after the show we were told we were going to hell by audience members....I told them I was a director-stage manager in a small Equity House....I was already in hell.....

I'm listing to the OBC "Carnival".

I find it such a moving piece.

I've only ever seen two productions. The non professional version I've seen "missed" the show entirely.

When will "Lili" be released on DVD I wonder

CARNIVAL is one of my most fondly remembered Broadway productions. I know it takes special skills to pull it off in a local production, but no one even tries any more, and that's a shame because it's beautiful and quite moving.

As for LILI, that's one of the REAL mysteries. DVD has been around since 1997 and after 11 years, we don't have an official  DVD release of LILI. Amazing. (I have to say my VHS and the DVD-R recorded off TCM both have some bothersome damage. I suspect Warner is searching for better elements.)

I got 7 more episodes of THE ODD COUPLE watched this evening making 14 episodes watched today. I have 8 to watch tomorrow to be done with the set.

Some weak episodes in this bunch with Paul Williams having an episode to himself with four songs sung. Another crammed Howard Cosell, Martina Arroyo, and Jack Carter into the same episode. Argh!

Next I watched last night's THE MENTALIST. An excellent episode with lots of "psychic" stuff from Patrick. No wonder the show scored its highest ratings yet with this episode. Showing off his skills in a variety of ways is one of the things that really make this show unique. When that's played down, the show is less interesting.

I was thinking about other shows I'd like to see revisited.  I loved "Billy" way back in the mid 70's when Crawford really had charisma and boyish charm.  I wonder if Will Young (from "Mrs Henderson Presents") could carry it off.  So much of the dialogue in the musical (and indeed the lyrics) were so close to the original book.

Shepherd here! (I guess when I was about 10)
(Washing my socks by night)

I was the angel who appeared to the shepherds, once.  No lines, I just had to look angelic. (Oh shut up, it was a long time ago)

As a very young child, I played a donkey.  We did a little performance piece one Christmas called The Friendly Beasts, where each animal had a verse to sing about their role in the nativity scene.  I still remember my verse

""I," said the donkey, shaggy and brown,
"I carried His mother up hill and down;
I carried her safely to Bethlehem town."
"I," said the donkey, shaggy and brown.

I was only about five, the youngest member, and very nervous about my part.  When it came time to watch the video of the performance, it was discovered that whoever was taping chose my song as the time to change over to a new tape, so my part was not on there.  I still remember going to my mother, sobbing, because I didn't get to hear myself.

The wounds of childhood :D
