Title: THE BIRTHDAY BOY
Post by: bk on December 08, 2008, 12:04:32 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were festive and birthday-like, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they tell me they'll be here later to celebrate my birthday.

Topic of the Day:  One of my absolute, all-time favorite Christmas songs is "All Those Christmas Clichés" by Lynne Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty.  And Lainie Kazan's recording (the first, I think) on "A Cabaret Noel" is absolute perfection!

Roy Orbison's version of Willie Nelson's "Pretty Paper"  is a favourite.

I love the Christmas albums by The Carpenters.

Sort of a Christmas song - "Electric Trains and You" Bobby Vee is also one of my favourite songs of the season.

Of the more traditional variety, I like Bobby Vinton's version of "Oh Holy Night"

Good morning, all!  I have my annual physical exam at 9:30, and since I wanted to get some Happy Fella work accomplished this morning, I got out of bed at 6 am.  I've had my oatmeal, egg, and coffee, and I'm ready to work.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Birthday Greetings to Our BK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After my exam, I'm off to collect the ton of NYC Gay Men's Chorus charts I wrote over the past 28 years. I may carton them up and send them off to Ohio this afternoon. I need to wrap a few Christmas gifts as well today.

DR CharlesPogue, I agree with you and La Jolie Femme about MILK; great sense of period. I too was wondering whatever happened to the unpleasant Anita Bryant, because her star certainy fell hard after all that ugliness. My only memory of her from the Proposition 6 ugliness was the slogan ANITA BRYANT LIKE ANITA HOLE IN THE HEAD. Was that in Maupin's Tales of the City?

It truly was a thrilling show. I loved it. One of the best episodes ever. But one thing i could not believe was how that fat lady sitting down almost changed the outcome of the race (the one that overheard the directions to the donut shop). She gave ken and tina the name of the place and a shortcut! That was so crazy!

I've had two or three of the loveliest days!! (Might it be because i'm finally mostly off the hook with caring for my cousin, Tina???)

Anyhow, I have this great job, managing a theater company here in LA - a small, dedicated, talented group of playwrights, designers, directors, actors. They've just finished a truly auspicious first year, successfully in the black, with very good reviews for all three plays. I'm helping the Artistic Director cross all t's and dot all i's. Oy. The financials are the most tedious of all theatrical tasks - but a labor of love, when surrounded by committed artists!!! Theater is my life!!!!!

Speaking o' which - I cranked up an Irish accent for the first time since I played Annie Sullivan back at Hamilton High, more than forty years ago - for an audition Saturday for a new Irish play - the playwright and director hired me on the spot!!! The playwright - a Dubliner - thought I was from the 'Naahhrth' - and asked me if I might be ebble ta bring jist a hint o' Doobln inta me spaych. Praise from Caesar...

anyway, one rehairsl, an' one rehdin... Oim trilled, oi tell ye.

What else - oh, lotsa stuff... as I careen into me 60th bairthdeh...

Another weird occurrence. A week or so ago, I received and reviewed the Blu-ray of BOTTLE ROCKET from Criterion. The regular DVD release was slated to come out in November, but I never received it and never made any stink about not getting it since I (1) knew I'd eventually review the disc on Blu-ray, and (2) was so swamped with other discs in early November that I welcomed not having another disc in the stack.

Well, this morning the UPS truck drops off a package. I'm thinking it's either that Disney Blu-ray of THE CHEETAH GIRLS or some upcoming Paramount releases for later in the month: THE DUCHESS, GHOST TOWN, THE TUDORS-Season 2.

And I open the package, and it's the DVD release of BOTTLE ROCKET, just about a month late.

Yesterday I mentioned the weird business with my HD-DVD player. I really bugged me all night long, so I decided to fiddle with it a bit when I went back downstairs last night.

Long story short: I unplugged the machine, plugged it in again, and the remote (and my universal remote) worked perfectly with it.

I'm thinking that's my cue to watch something on HD-DVD tonight. It will be either DAYLIGHT, THE THING, BABEL, or U-571.

The Smoke House (http://www.smokehouse1946.com/Home.html) brings back memories...

Specifically of the scandalously orange cheese bread...

And proper Shirley Temples, made with grenedine (not with the syrup from the cherry jar that stored the garnish for so many other drinks, that would be cheating)...

And Grampa flirting with the waitress while Grandma sat next to him, shaking her head and quietly chuckling.

RE bk's comments on the WHITE CHRISTMAS transfer.

I've been yammering for a new transfer FOR YEARS. Paramount put the old transfer in a new case a couple of years ago, but I believe it's the same transfer with the same extras.

I can still watch it with great pleasure, but imagine how fabulous it would look on Blu-ray! But even an update on DVD (a la FUNNY FACE) would be a vast improvement.

Speaking of "pooped", I'm "whupt."  Yes, that's right.  I am dragging tail today.

It was a lo-n-n-n-n-n-g weekend for me, starting with my day off on Friday.

Friday was "supposed to be" the day I rid myself of unneeded electronics devices in my home, as well as some bits of furnishings that supported said electronics (i.e. old TV stand, etc.).

Instead, due to the unfortunate shattered safety glass on my FedEx-delivered TV stand from CostCo, I had to return said TV stand (all 125 pounds of it) to CostCo on Friday.  My hope was that the store I went to would have the stand in stock.

One of the benefits of being an "Executive Member" of CostCo is that you get to start shopping an hour earlier than the hoi and the polloi.  Of course, you have to pay double for that luxury, but I find it's worth it in order to get things done as quickly as possible and get on with my life.  Otherwise, CostCo can eat up the better part of a day.

I left my comfortable condo Friday a.m., with shattered-safety-glass-afflicted-TV Stand in my trunk area (the trunk extends well into the car because I can fold down my back seats).  (I drive a Ford Probe if that helps anyone visualize the situation).  I arrived at CostCo 30 minutes before its "early" opening of 10 a.m.

Happily, I had stopped at "La Farine" bakery to see what goodies might tide me over the morning and discovered they had introduced ham and cheese puff pastry sandwiches.  Oh, YUM!  I then went to Peet's for my triple-shot latte.  So, I sat in my car and had brekkies as cars continued to arrive and fill all the spaces nearest the store.  I conveniently parked next to a cart return area as it affords a bit of extra room for getting/loading large objects in or out of my trunk.

Finished with my repast, I got one of the store's large flatbed carts, and then I unloaded the TV stand package onto the cart.  Getting it out of the car was far more difficult than getting it in.  That's due to "leverage".  Putting it in, I could position the package against the car and lift it from the bottom using the car as a lever to slide/push the package into the trunk.  Getting it out, I had to do a dead lift and then pull hard to get it back over the edge of the trunk before I could repeat the "lever" process.

I was pushing the flatbed toward the store when the doors opened and a man walked out and announced that the store would not open for an hour because they had broken a water pipe.  Folks began returning to their cars and driving away.  I parked my flatbed in front of the store and found a concrete ledge on which to sit.

That all happened around 9:55 a.m.  The store opened at 11:25 a.m.

Once at the returns counter, I was informed that my particular TV stand was ONLY OFFERED ONLINE.  I pointed out that the packing was not conducive to shipping as all the glass was packaged on one side with really inadequate protection.  Nevertheless, shipping was the only way one could get an item-for-item replacement.  They did have, however, similar stands in the store if I cared to shop for one.  A refund was duly instated onto my credit card and I was off and running.

I did, indeed, find ONE (count it, 1) TV stand in the store.  By one, I mean one brand.  They had several of this one brand in stock, all identical.  It looked sleek, it had the mount I wanted, and it seemed sizable enough to hold the components I hoped it would hold.  It was a tad wider (by 9") than the one I'd ordered, though, and the shelves were curved rather than rectangular.

I loaded it onto a flatbed and then proceeded to do a bit more shopping.  I was out of the store and back home by 1 p.m.

Today may be BK's 61st birthday, and BK may possess buns of steel and abs of granite, but I am not prone to long jogs and stationary bicycle rides.  My 60-year-old carcass was exhausted upon arrival at home.  I had been wrestling with that "other" TV stand package for two days and now I had one more to unload and get upstairs and, hopefully, assembled with little to no difficulty.

Everything was in perfect condition as I unpacked the box.  The "hardware packet" for "Stand Assembly" and "Mount Assembly" was a bit forbidding.  I soon learned, after laying out a large white towel and placing all the hardware packets into an assembly line that matched the illustration in an accompanying book, that most of the hardware would not be used.  There was hardware for the "3-in-1" assembly...one stand that could be used three different ways.  Of course, the way I wanted was the one with the widest range of parts, but there it is.  As usual.  Story of my life.

(End Part I -- Part 2 anon)

That is often the answer to problems involving electronics, but for some reason, it's usually the LAST thing I think about doing.

...My only memory of her from the Proposition 6 ugliness was the slogan ANITA BRYANT LIKE ANITA HOLE IN THE HEAD. Was that in Maupin's Tales of the City?
No.  Maupin has always had more class than to write something like that.  Instead, he wrote "Letter to Mama" as part of More Tales of the City, which included the following:

"These aren't radicals or wierdos, Mama.  They are shop clerks and bankers and little old ladies and people who nod and smile to you when you meet them on the bus.  Their attitude is neither patronizing nor pitying.  And their message is simple:  Yes, you are a person.  Yes, I like you.  Yes, it's all right for you to like me too."

Words I've tried to live by.

(Part 2, continued from Part 1)

I decided next I'd need a nap before tackling the job, so I lay down for two hours.  Upon arising, I was ready and willing and able to plow ahead.

I was determined to do everything correctly and in the proper order because this TV stand was going to hold my plasma HDTV and my invaluable (to me) components.  It just would not do to rush through it and get something wrong.  Oh, no.  It would not do.

Several hours later, I had most of the stand assembled.  I'd still have to mount brackets on my TV...and unplug all my components...and move them...and then figure a way to position the new stand in front of the old stand and then lift the 37-inch hdtv onto the new TV mount.  I decided it could wait until morning.  I had to rest.  I had to have a little something to eat (it was nearly 10 p.m. and I'd had eaten nothing since my little ham & cheese puff pastry sandwich 12 hours earlier).  I ate a turkey sammich.  I watched TV until 11 p.m., and then I went to bed.

For whatever reason, I found sleep difficult after 5:30 a.m.  I was still exhausted, but sleep would not linger for me.  I managed to stay abed until about 7:30 and then got up and made coffee.

I glared at the scene in my living room.  This was not the way I'd envisioned the weekend going, but I was determined to finish this project as quickly as possible.

Everything was unplugged.  I removed each component separately, gave each a good dusting and carefully placed all the cords/cables in one location so that I knew where they all were and what they went to.  I then mounted brackets onto the back of my TV.  Finally, I lifted the TV onto the new TV stand's mount.  Ta and Da.

I had another hour of adjustments and futzing and putzing with this, that and the other, including putting the glass shelving into place and loading in the components.  When I began hooking things up, I quickly encountered an "Uh...OH!

There are several positions one can use to mount brackets on the back of a TV.  I had chosen the one that made it impossible for me to access a couple of key inputs (HDMI ports).  TV had to come down and brackets had to be redone.  I tried several different positions.  I tried using spacers provided.  I did a whole bunch of stuff.  And after much time had been expended wastefully, I settled on the best solution.

Needless to say, I've bored you with all of this to primarily get to one point:  I put together my new TV stand and I'm just as pleased as punch about it.  I don't know if "punch" is the kind you drink or if the phrase refers to "Punch" in "Punch and Judy".  Whichever the case, I'm pleased.  And I'm going to post a picture if one will post.

All of this transpired well into the afternoon on Saturday.  Saturday evening, I began "catching up" on the programming in my DVR cache of shows I'd not watched last week.

And yesterday....well, yesterday was a day.  It was the day before the GSA Annual Holiday Pot Luck.  I've missed this event the past two years because it was being scheduled during my vacation (usually after Dec. 15th).  For whatever reason, they chose Dec. 8th for this year's pot luck and I signed up to do a few things.

Yesterday, I baked two deep-dish coconut custard pies.  They turned out BEAUTIFULLY.  I also prepared a sweet potato souffle that is GORGEOUSITY.  It's in a 9 X 13 Pyrex baking dish and is covered with a brown sugar-pecan coating that looks too yummy for words.

And then...then I prepared two large batches of green beans with red potatoes.  Oh, yes...I was cooking ALL DAY LONG.

I was done by 8 p.m. and ready to settle in for my ABC shows at 9 and 10, but the Sandman slapped me silly and I was in bed by 9:30.

So...here I sit at work.  My sweet potato souffle is sitting on top of a file cabinet.  My pies and green beans/potatoes are in a cart behind me.  Today will be a GREAT DAY.

I hope I'll have the energy to enjoy it!

What a busy, full, exhausting weekend, DR Ron Pulliam. Glad it was you and not me.

But, of course, pictures should be forthcoming so all of us can see the results of your handiwork. And, how about that Blu-ray? Naturally, you're already used to the look of high definition from the wonderful HD-DVD player you have, but I hope you've found Blu-ray equally impressive. I have never been able to tell a pin's worth of difference between the video or audio quality of the best discs. And, on both sides of the coin, there are discs that don't measure up to the best the formats have to offer.

TOD:

Oh, woe to those of us who work where muzak is piped in for the enjoyment of the shoppers.

Starting at Thanksgiving, and from then onwards for the Christmas Shopping Month, we get to listen to Christmas Songs, one after another.  We have no choice, it is piped in and there is no stopping the merriment playing in the air.

The problem is, we only get Christmas Songs.  Actual Christmas Carols are verbotten.  They are considered to be un-PC.

So, all we get is the same small selection of Christmas Songs, played over and over, albeit in several different arrangements by several different performers.

Does anyone out there understand how sick and tired a person can get of "White Christmas" and "Silver Bells" after a while?

Bleh.

I find it a lot easier to simply have a small television in the kitchen.

Easier than what?     ::)

Easier than trying to watch the television that is in the living room whilst I am performing miracles in the kitchen.

Of course, the fact that the television in the living room is against one side of the wall
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
that separates the kitchen from the livingroom, making it impossible to watch and cook at the same time, well that has something to do with the need for a small set in the kitchen.

That's great....for you.

The ability to watch TV from my kitchen was not my purpose in getting the new TV stand, but it was a nice perk.  I have no counter space for a TV in the kitchen.  My kitchen is compact, to put it kindly.

Having my annual disparagement of Christmas Songs That Are Played Endlessly By Thoughtless Christmas Shopping Muzak Purveyers now officially out of the way, let me add that I'm fond of "Song For Ten", written by Murray Gold and performed by Neil Hannon as part of Doctor Who: The Christmas Invasion.  My, that was predictable, wasn't it!

And there's a lot to be said for celebratory music that really has nothing at all to do with the Holiday, but is cheerful and somehow fitting all on it's own, such as Benjamin Britten's Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Purcell, more generally known as The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra.  In fact, a lot of classical and semi-classical music written for the younger of ear is wonderful at this time of year.

I've got a microwave, a toaster oven, a Kitchen-Aid mixer, a Henckel's knife block and various/assorted jars for beans, rice, etc.  Sadly, that leaves only a little room here, and a little room there, to "whip stuff up" in.

My New Year's gift to myself MAY be a smallish "butcher block island" cart (if I can figure where I'll station it when it's not in use).

As for the Topic of the Day...

I remember being given two pieces of vintage sheet music when I was 10-years old or so: "The Christmas Waltz" and "The Jingle Bell Polka".  Both tunes have been special to me ever since I fell in love with the covers.

"The Christmas Song" ("Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire") - Yes, Nat King Cole's version of this classic Mel Tormé tune is a true classic. However, I also like Dianne Schurr's rendition too - that voice!

Back from a brisk long jog.  If anyone had asked me one year ago that at sixty-one years of age I'd be jogging four miles every day, I would have laughed - laughed, I tell you - laughed in their face, and yet here I am, doing four miles a day.  Kind of chilly out, but the sun is still trying its best to shine through.

One of the benefits of being an "Executive Member" of CostCo is that you get to start shopping an hour earlier than the hoi and the polloi.

Does a Hero Member outrank an Executive Member?

All members are not created equal, but all members are heroes in my book (Chapter Four - All Members Are Heroes).

For some weird reason, the local NBC affiliate here is also carrying the Carolina-Tampa Bay game during prime time (along with ESPN), so I guess if I get to see CHUCK and HEROES at all, it will be a delayed broadcast (and probably not in HD).

It is an NFL requirement that a game be shown to a team's local market on a TV station that is not Cable.

When I got in, I immediately watched the standard DVD of BOTTLE ROCKET. The film didn't improve the third time watching it (it's OK, not some great comic undiscovered masterpiece as is often said about it), but the DVD looks very nice. Obviously, the Blu-ray was sharper and had better color stability and no line shimmering as was the case in a couple of places here. Still, it looked just fine for fans of the movie who haven't yet moved to Blu-ray.

The bonus features were all the same, too, even the enclosed booklet.

Thanks. That explains it.

I also took the time to seaarch for CHUCK and HEROES. Guess when the NBC affiliate is showing them? Nope, not tonight in the wee hours of the morning. No, CHUCK is coming on tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the DAYS OF OUR LIVES timeslot. HEROES is slated for WEdnesday at 2 p.m. So I will get to see them, but later in the week.

Once I finished BOTTLE ROCKET, I watched the last half hour of BROTHERS & SISTERS. Very moving. I especially loved the scenes with Kevin and Scotty in the hospital room. So tender and beautiful and real. I teared up a couple of times in this last half hour of the show.

Then, I skimmed through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Luke, Noah, and Brian were on, but I didn't find it all that interesting. Luke snooping into Brian's past might make for some drama later on. Who knows? The Lucinda-Brian scenes were kind of icky.

I have no counter space for a TV in the kitchen.  My kitchen is compact, to put it kindly.

Fortunately, I got to design our kitchen before the house was built. There is a counter space, pre cable wired, for a small TV, and "dining alcove" for the dog dishes so they are not under foot (until Fletcher pulls out the food bowl so he can eat lying down!). The kitchen is 15x14 and has 24 feet of counter space.

The TV spot is on the right (The hole is for the two buitt-in ovens)

PennyO, Congrats on the great job and the new play!  Sounds very exciting!

Yes, that's the one that's on HD-DVD. I haven't seen it since I saw it at the movies when it first came out. Scared the *%*&^$& out of me even with the less than marvelous special effects at certain moments. I'm sure CGI effects now could make some of the more problematic effects more acceptable, but it still was frightening.

Back from a wonderfully wonderful lunch with Nick Redman, his pal Julie Kirgo, and someone from the filmscoremonthly message board - a very nice cinematographer.  I got a whole batch o' new CD soundtracks from Nick, and a beautiful sweater and a scarf (not a scarf - what do they call those things - ah, a muffler) which I sure could have used in NY.  I was VERY good at lunch - had a small Thai salad with peanut dressing - excellent, not filling at all, and pretty safe.  The company, of course, was great.

Singer John Pagano, who is Burt Bacharach's vocalist when he tours, gave me his new CD at our benefit (in which he appeared) - it's quite wonderful - all fully orchestrated mostly with charts by the great Pat Williams - beautifully recorded at Capitol Records, and three tracks arranged and conducted by Burt.  I don't know what this thing must have cost, but a lot, I should think.  It's not really on a label, either - he did it on his own, I gather.  It's really nice.

What was the postage on it???? I know I told the USPS clerk to mail it 1st Class Postage.  It should have gotten there before the next episode of "Life on Mars" aired (or, at least, the night it would have aired).

I'm glad you have it.  You can still see it before the "next" episode airs.

What a trip.

POSSIBLY GROSS, SO READ WITH CARE!

My doctor discovered that I actually had four MRSA lesions this time, all of them under my arm.  And naturally all of them had to be lanced and drained.  I thought at first that the doctor and his nurse were playing a game of tic tac toe on my armpit, but they promised that they weren't.  The numbing agent has now worn off, and I hurt like Heck.

Oh, and I told my doctor that his partner is a QUACK!

MRSA, MRSA, Mercy, DR TCB, you poor thing! And how did your doctor react to the quack comment?

And what are they using to treat you, TCB?

I read an article on this infection just this past weekend.  While it's resistant to most antibiotics, hospitals are supposedly having success with some super-antibiotics in controlling the infections.

I just uploaded a new photo.

How do I make it larger?

I don't think anyone has figured that out yet. THose of us with larger pictures are using older ones that were already on file with the site.

Unfortunately, any new avatar can only be 65 by 65 pixels. :-\

Hmmmmmm....I wonder if there is a way to trick the system.  Could he possibly download the (larger) picture into a regular post and then go back and retrieve it from the cache for avatar replacement?

So far, good old-fashioned sulfa drugs are the only thing that they have found that works for me.  Eventually, I will become allergic to sulfa.

And also congrats to MR BK on 45,000 posts!

I think I will watch IT and THE SHUTTERED ROOM tonight and save whatever first run episodes from CBS tonight for when they are rerun in January.

DR Ron Pulliam, do you remember that DVD of LIFE ON MARS you were kind enough to send me on Nov 22? Well, it finally arrived in today's mail! I had been wondering what had happened to it.

DR tomovoz, thank you for the beautiful calendar!

I think it probably went all over the USA on a $1.51 stamp! I think it got put into the wrong bin and was passed from pillar to post before landing in New York.  The DVD is in fine shape although it looks as if something with cleats ran over the envelope at least once. The address is very clear and it's postmarked Nov 22. It's a PO snafu!

And Grampa flirting with the waitress while Grandma sat next to him, shaking her head and quietly chuckling.

derBrucer used to take you to the Smoke house?
Actually, yes, once.  But when we went, I had a very nice Manhattan (with cherry).  I haven't had a Shirley Temple in decades.

Our gala Annual Holiday Potluck was well-attended, splendily provisioned and a soul-stuffing experience.  "Soul" in this context IS a euphemism.

I may not eat for two more days.  Sad, that, because tomorrow at noon is my division's annual holiday luncheon.

I have just enough green beans and just enough sweet potato souffle left over to make two more meals.

There was also some coconut custard pie left over (most of one, actually).  With so many desserts provided, I feel great that one whole pie was consumed and part of the other.  Now, I've had my coconut custard fix for the year.

I'm very very glad I closed the office early this afternoon.  About 2:30 Edith's boyfriend called us to say that the roads were starting to get slick.  It was a slow afternoon, so I said "Let's just close the office and go home"   By the time I got home, it was freezing rain and my car was covered with ice.  I saw one car accident on the way home and I'm sure there were more later.  It's snowing now, but there is a layer of ice under it.   We're going to get 2-5 inches here...well that's the forecast. Anyway, I'm glad we called it a day so neither one of us was out in the slick stuff

Fought Over Any Good Books Lately? (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/07/fashion/07clubs.html?partner=permalink&exprod=permalink)

My book group has an excellent method of choosing the book, whoever hosts picks.  We also encourage new members to come for at least one meeting before deciding.  We also give them a complete list of all the books we have read.  Variety is important to us.

Tomorrow’s discussion is “Founding Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation”  I must admit I’m having trouble with it.  This is not a book to read when overly sleepy & suffering from a headache.  Yesterday my head finally felt better & reading it was much easier.  This reminds me, I have one more LONG chapter to read.

The Manhattan Street Corners Project (http://www.richardhowe.net/zMSC/index-msc.html)

Photographer Richard Howe captured every street corner in Manhattan, about 11,000 total.

WOW!

And I thought my own personal photographic - and digestive - journal-ing of every bakery in New York City was impressive.

;)

Well, he didn't get every single solitary street corner. Hate to be a stick in the mud but he didn't get 16th or 15th Street and Union Square West (not exactly my corners but as close as he could come if he's working up Broadway). He jumps from Broadway and 14th Street to Broadway and 17th Street, skipping 15th and 16th Street on Union Square West/Broadway. Perhaps he skipped because therer are only two corners, not four (the northwest corner and the southwest corner, the other "corners" are the parking lot/Greenmarket in Union Square Park) or perhaps he skipped because Union Square West is the official name of the street, not Broadway and he wanted to stay just with Broadway. Anyway, it's still fun to look at although I think our hits have helped the poor man exceed his bandwith for the day. I just got an error message saying the bandwith had been exceeded.

We are putting up our tree and I'm posting  from the living room with the laptop.

Later, gaters.

Evening all.  I only have time for one post because I have the hit the hay early.  I have to be up at 4 AM to make it to my bus stop to be picked up at 5:30 AM with a friend from work so we can carpool to a meeting that we both have to help set up.  Ugh.  I don’t know how I get talked into doing these things.

I couldn’t let the day go by without wishing our very own Dear BK the most happiest of birthdays!  It may be your birthday but the biggest gift was given to us.

You can watch “It’s a Wonderful Life” and know that yours made a big difference for some people.

Dear Vixter, I am so happy to see that you posted.  Much love, hugs and vibes to you and your family.  Tell your Mom she is thought of.

We won’t get “Boston Legal” tonight because of some stupid football game.  The LAST show and they move it to sometime on Sunday afternoon.   Hummmp!

My favorite Christmas songs (in no particular order)

Oh Holy Night – Michael Crawford
The 12 Pains of Christmas
There’s Something Stuck Up In the Chimney
I’m Dressing Up Like Santa (as soon as I can get out on Parole)
Angels We Have Heard On High
Do You Hear What I Hear?
White Christmas

Oh heck, I like them all—Well, except “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer”.  But I do really like the funny ones.  I love that “Twisted Christmas” CD.

Laters all!

I envy Ben and Ant putting up their wonderful tree, remembering how beautiful it was last year! With 4 cats it will be a few years before we have a tree again, but I had fun decorating the mailbox and am working on the front door little by little. It's been very cold and I've had the flu the last few days but tried to do too much outdoor stuff like food drives over the weekend and now I'm paying the price.

We still had trees with cats.  Do yours climb them?  We put non-breakable decorations on the bottom of the tree in case they decided to bat them.

This will be Sherlock's first tree since the boys & their fiancées should be coming for the holidays.

The next BONES episode was the one featuring Ace Young as the murdered vocalist, and the insane stalker who fell for Booth and was wildly jealous of Temperance.

After that, I fired up the HD-DVD machine using my universal remote (working perfectly) and watched THE THING. Even though I had seen the movie all those years ago and remembered some of its terrors, it still managed to make me jump a couple of times. I enjoyed seeing it again even if the sound mix greatly dated the production. The surrounds would have been much more active if this could have been made today.

I concluded my evening of entertainment by watching DESK SET, a movie I always enjoy. Since I had the HD-DVD machine running, I put the DVD in it and let that machine upconvert it.

Does anyone use a webcam for work or pleasure?

I think I've mentioned this before...

When I went on the road with Anything Goes I bought webcams for myself and Steve.  They enabled us to say, "Goodnight" to each other face-to-face each night.  The software also had some great webcam games - basketball, pop-the-bubbles, etc. - and those really came in handy when we had a layover in a "less exciting" city.

My mom has a webcam. Whenever I ask her about she never answers me.

DR Druxy, I like the old one-not that I could tell what the new one looked like ;)

Yeah, but the new one made me look 20 years younger.

I've been invited to guest on the Michael Dresser radio show at 11:30 pm (PST) Tuesday (9) night to discuss my book, ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD: From the Secret Files of Harry Pennypacker.

The show airs in 40 different markets, so if you get a chance, please listen.  It should be fun.

I had a fsbulously fabulous dinner at the Smoke House.  The restaurant wasn't very busy tonight, but Garry Marshall was there.  I was actually a very good boy - I had the combo Louis, did not overdo the dressing AT ALL, had less than a half-cup of clam chowder, and five pieces (they are very small) of the garlic cheese bread - no cake.   The garlic cheese bread is like the bread on a foot-long Subway sandwich - but only half - the top and bottom half of half a footlong, cut into seven small pieces.  So, of the top half of the half I had five of those seven pieces, so I didn't feel like I overdid it.  Anyway, it was faboo.  And here's a picture of the garlic cheese bread that was left:

You can see that the small piece in the middle left is about the size of each of the five pieces I ate - no one ate the two large end pieces that you see.

The bread was also in focus, which is more than I can say for the photograph.

Other wonderful thing: I got an early copy of season two volume one of The Mod Squad - O joy!  I'll be back with Pete, Julie, and Linc very soon.

But for tonight I'm enjoying listening to CDs.  Now playing is the delicious Johnny Williams soundtrack to How To Steal A Million - first CD has the soundtrack album in total.  Second CD has the actual film tracks PLUS (and this is a dream come true) Williams' first film score for Fox, my beloved Bachelor Flat.  I've had the raw tracks from this for some time, but they were not great sounding - apparently Michael Mattesino has done a masterful job in cleaning them up.
