Thanks to all the vibes last night---my dad and his wife really appreciated knowing how many people are out there sending vibes to my "Papasaurus".

I'm off to the hospital again so apologies in advance for bad tying on my itouch.

We will have the test results today and hopefully he can go home this afternoon. He is looking and feeling much better than when he arrived!

My first question for ASK BK day.

Since back in the old days, reel changes messed with the sound....did composers get the film with the exact spot of the reel changes so that they could compose a few seconds of silence at those spots?

I can help answer as an editor...we try to find spots to break the reel where no music is called for, or there is a clear scene break, or a non-dialogue area where it wouldn't matter if the reel change is off by a second or two.
Title: Re: SOLID
Post by: Edisaurus on December 10, 2008, 06:36:34 AM
By the time we break the reels, we usually have an idea of where music is going. Occasionally after spotting for the music cues with the composer, I have changed where the break occurs if the composer wants the music to tail out into the next scene, but very rarely.

Good morning, all! Today I packup some office things and ship them off to Ohio and to California. I'll be stuck there for a while, waiting the arrival of the Fed Ex pickup. After that, I think I'll come back here are wrap a few gifts I need to ship out, work a bit on Mr Loesser's score.

I see that AA Milne has written a book to celebrate DR MBarnum's natal day today. I'm very happy for you, Mikey!

I just got my tickets for my Cabaret series starting in January.

Previously announced Jerry Lanning (Original Patrick in Mame) and Sammy Williams (Bruce Kimmel's Stages & A Chorus Line) are out

They are replaced by two people I have never heard of (which is rare for me)

Valerie Lemmon & Edward Juvier. Anyone out there know of them?

Did any of our august NYC DRs hear the new Stephen Schwartz opera, Séance on a Wet Afternoon?

I figured not, or we'd likely have heard about it here, but I am curious... and have seen no press write-ups or reviews.

Have any DRs seen THE COUNTERFEITERS? I had not heard much about it, but it won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film for 2007. Nice film. I love the soundtrack and thought it worked well. I don't recall it being discussed either either by BK or the DRs. Of course, that could be the fault of my memory.

They had presentations of it a week or two ago as part of some Opera conference here in NYC.  I was not able to attend, but I know some people who did, as well as some people in the cast.  Everyone involved seems to have liked it, and, thankfully, operas in their "early stage" are given more of a benefit of the doubt than their musical theatre counterparts.

DR MBarnum:

I’ve traveled ‘round this world a couple of times in my life.  And everywhere I’ve been, I’ve seen the things for which many places are well-known.  But I have also tried to find undiscovered treasures…something that would make these places unique for me beyond the picture postcard remembrances.

I once heard of an exotic bird called a Rary.  And the legends surrounding this bird all say that it is people-friendly, but very hard to find.  Everyone who has reported encountering the bird has said it has a funny way of walking, that it will perch on your finger and that it enjoys being tipped over on its perch.

I decided I had to see this wondrous creature, so whenever I was near a place where a Rary had been reported, I’d venture off the beaten path and see if I could find one.

I’ve been through the rain forests of Hawaii and the Philippines; I’ve been to remote regions of Japan and Malaysia; I’ve searched in Africa in the Kenyan highlands.  I’ve climbed Mount Olympus in Greece, and I’ve wandered the wind-ravaged plains of eastern Turkey.  I’ve even crossed the alps into Switzerland, Austria and Italy.

Sadly, I’ve never seen one of these fabulous birds.  I can’t even say that I’ve “just missed” seeing one.  But I can say I’ve traveled many miles in search of one, and I know beyond any doubt about my journey:

It's a long, long way to tip a Rary.

Fortunately, though, I have only to ramble on a bit to wish you a Very HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Never did find out!  I never scheduled the appointment with a specialist to have my ears cleaned, and the imbalance just went away on its own.

I went to a doctor once after I'd been swimming in a heated pool.  The heated water got into my ears, melted the ear wax which coated my ear drum.

The doctor told me that the ear "cleans itself" and that I should be patient.

I went to another doctor who cleaned my ears and gave me pointers on how to handle the "increased" ear wax buildup that comes with age.

Here's another site to help any DR looking for travel deals right now:

Bidding For Travel (http://biddingfortravel.yuku.com/)

It's a "forum" type board that tips people off to when certain travel deals appear on priceline.com - including which hotels just sold a block of rooms to them.  Various cities are covered.

DR Jennifer, yes I loved the TAR finale. I noticed that Dallas and his mom were not there at the end...I presume they were still stranded in Russia trying to locate their passports or get new ones.

Yep i think they only made it to the after party because they got there a few hours after the finish line. :(

I know there are some fans of the film "Auntie Mame" on this forum, and I would be remiss if I didn't tell you that a wonderful thing has happened:  Bronislau Kaper's sparkling score is now available on CD from the Film Score Monthly label (http://www.screenarchives.com/title_detail.cfm?ID=10971).

Previously available only on LP, in either mono or stereo, the score has long been out of print and highly collectible, especially in Stereo.  FSM got access to the Warner Brothers recording master and has produced the best sound ever for the glorious score.

An added bonus, for me anyway, is that "Auntie Mame" is paired with Max Steiner's gorgeous score for "Rome Adventure."

Then I watched EAGLE EYE. Very entertaining action thriller. I loved how it didn't talk down to the audience. For more than the first half of the film, you just have to go with the flow because you're not sure why these things are happening. Slowly but surely, however, the conspiracy plot becomes clear as it continues to ratchet up the tension. Really enjoyed it.

We have finished the gift bags. A record number (sadly), 3,700 bags done in record time. We began last Monday, December 1st and finished this afternoon, Wednesday, December 10th. We had a surge of volunteers today and were able to fill all the remaining bags. All that remains is delivery on Saturday (I don't do the delivery part, I work all week and let the others pack up the cars for delivery). There is a volunteer party on Sunday but as of 3:30 this afternoon I am now officially on vacation!

We will go to Lincoln Center either tomorrow or Friday to see a costume exhibit recommended by friends and we will also go to the Morgan Library to see an exhibit of drawings and other material from Babar (a favorite character of mine).

That's it for now from Chelsea.

Later, Gaters.

Glad you're feeling better, bk.  When that happened to me once, the doctor suggested that ear wax buildup could affect one's balance.

This may be TMI, but too bad. ;) My dad's hearing has been getting progressively worse over the last year.  It was so bad that we actually had to look directly at him, speak VERY clearly and over-enunciate everything so that he could read our lips. :( Anyway, a couple of weeks ago, he FINALLY went to have his ears checked out and guess what...it was all just wax that had built up in his ear!  They had to (carefully) scrape it out :P and now he has perfect hearing. :)

Well the sun did square Uranus today. Even though the Sagittarius Sun with its freedom-loving ways has a natural affinity with independent Uranus, this square still presents the challenge to break free from old self-definitions.

And tomorrow Mars squares Uranus - there are few combinations that are as rebellious as when these two get together! One thing's for sure: you won't want anyone telling you what to do -- although you're sure to be challenged now! As always when Uranus is involved, liberating yourself from old patterns is essential. Whichever way you're used to doing things, do yourself a favor and step back, see what's working, what's not and proceed from there.

And TOP CHEF is on tonight!

DR JOSE must be trimming the tree.

We haven't had many tree reports yet this year......up or down?

We don't trim a tree at my house....so nothing to report at this end.

My Christmas tree is up!  It's a little, 2-foot tall table-top model that's in my kitchen window.  I'll take a picture and post it when I get home.

Thanks...it seemed like Mars squared Uranus today...  :)

DR Cilla, I did have the hearing in my right ear improve drastically the day the doctor pulled the cotton from a Qtip out of it. ;D

 :o  ;D

I hear quite well, actually....at least I think I do  ;)

For years & years I begged my mother-in-law to get hearing aids.  Once she finally did she was shocked at how much she had been missing.  Most shocking of all was how loud the volume on the TV had been set. ;D

Back from the opera. Well sung, interestingly staged, but did I like it? Not very much. Some lovely music, and a wonderful ensemble in a rainstorm.

Update on my home sale:
I met with the structural engineer today. He said three beams need sistering, not six, and that it'll cost under $1000. The other structural issue is, in his opinion, a non-issue; there's evidence of some old water damage that was corrected ages ago, but there's no problem now.

I am greatly relieved. Now, will my buyers feel satisfied with the engineer's report or will they believe the people they brought in, neither of whom is a structural engineer? I know who I believe! All this fuss because their home inspector was out to lunch.

A buyer might look at a home inspection you provide, but as a buyer I would not trust it without having my own person check it out.  The problem, usually the buyer uses an inspector their Realtor recommends.

In this case, if I were the buyer I might request an extension on the inspection period & hire a structure specialist.
