Well, you've read the notes, the notes were roasted over an open fire, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently making a list and checking it twice.
-
And the word of the day is: KICKSHAW!
-
And now - Dino at the piano.
-
I'm still full from the meal I ate at 4:00.
-
And I left half of it.

BK asks:
And if there are chestnuts are there also kneenuts and elbownuts?
Well, there are:
Kneeholes
Leg irons
Belly buttons
Pipes have elbows and nipples
Roads have shoulders
Shoes have tongues
Wine has a nose
Potatoes have eyes
Jugs have ears
A river has a mouth
Wrenches have jaws
der Brucer - who shall keep his nuts far from the open fire
-
Well, after reading bk's delightful bit of seasonal holiday nonsense, I'm certainly in a merrier state of mind. Aren't you? COURSE ya are! :)
-
Thank you, DR Ann, for the recipe!!!!! :-*
-
I am glad to see that all of our DRs who live where it is snowing made it home safely last night.
-
Whew! I guess I need to moisturize more...the backs of my knuckles are cracking open. Yuck! :P
-
Glad that you are back on a stage, DR TCB. Don't ever go away from the lights of 14th street! :)
-
I am wondering if "I Was Here" from The Glorious Ones will become the next "The Impossible Dream"? ;)
-
...the backs of my knuckles are cracking open.
Then stop dragging them on the ground!

From S Woody: DAMN NUNS!

singdaw - well, since Brian stokes Mitchell has sung "I Was Here" on several occasions, who knows?

And the word of the day is: KICKSHAW!
And The Song Of The Day Is: LITTLE TIN BOX

And the word of the day is: KICKSHAW!
Every time the Simple Village Players had to perform Arms and the Man, they wanted to KICKSHAW.

Jason Graae and Liz Callaway each need to make Christmas albums! Guy Haines too. Sally Mayes too (but only if you produce it).
-
I misplaced my Isosceles triangle. Whatever will I do now?
-
You should do a Karen Morrow Christmas album too!

So anyway - two hour delay on schools here - those that are open. No snow but the streets are ice covered. Dangerous.
So I shall stay home today and wait for the temperature to rise.....and it's too darn hot before I do anything.
-
Good to be cautious, DR JRand58!!
-
I would buy a Christmas album by Jason Graae, Liz Callaway, Guy Haines, Sally Mayes, or Karen Morrow.
In fact, I would buy ANY album by Jason Graae, Liz Callaway, Guy Haines, Sally Mayes, or Karen Morrow!
-
Cautious is my middle name. And does it look funny on my business cards.
Thanks to DR RLP for posting the Oldies.com information last week. Both of my orders have now shipped.....more than $145 worth of DVD's for about $44.
-
My question for ASK BK day......what is your favorite Ronald Stein score?
-
Good morning, all! Cincinnati Bell, which runs zoomtown, a server like Verizon and Roadrunner, has got my sister-in-law's computer in a state. Again! And I'm at the public library, printing eBay invoices and catching up.
Not much else to tell: I ned to talk to the estate attorney today, finish packing up packages to send out hither and yon, which I hope to do tomorrow morning, and work on the BABES IN TOYLAND final edit.
I shall return later.
-
Good morning!
More gray skies and moderate temperatures. Tomorrow it may get up to near 70!
-
You've Got My Computer in a State - that's the power ballad from my new musical.
-
On TV Tonight!™
NBC - MUPPET CHRISTMAS, LIFE, LAW & ORDER
ABC - PUSHING DAISIES, PRIVATE PRACTICE, DIRTY SEXY MONEY
CBS - comedies, CRIMINAL MINDS, CSI: NY
FOX - SECRET MILLIONAIRE, BONES (rerun)
-
Plans certainly change in a hurry. I have a Christmas dinner to go to tomorrow night, so lunch tomorrow with friends was canceled. Now, we're doing it day (just found out a half hour ago). So, the free morning I thought I was going to have now is more hectic since we're doing lunch earlier than usual.
-
As I mentioned last night, I will be starting work on THE TUDORS second season set this afternoon. There are only 10 episodes and a couple of bonus featurettes, so I should be able to get it done relatively quickly. However, the dinner tomorrow night will likely prevent me from finishing it before Friday.

I am imagining, in my mind's eye, the MAD Magazine parody of HHW. ;D
[and, on a side rant, why do you never hear about the mind's elbow, or the mind's pinky, etc., etc. and so forth?]

DR MATTH - is the Earl of Derby or Lord Stanley mentioned in any of the Tudor episodes....being my ancestor and all, I might be interested......
-
You've Got My Computer in a State - that's the power ballad from my new musical.
Doesn't one of the verses go something like:
You've got my computer in a state -
Probably one of the lower 48.
But we're now past the expiration date
And I hate
To be such an ingrate
But you've got my computer in a state.
-

Doesn't ring a bell, but when I begin rewatching the episodes today, I'll try to remember to look and listen for them.

Now, I have some things I must attend to downstairs before hopping in the shower to get cleaned up.

DRs Hainesies and Kimlets, you may rest easy and be of good cheer for I have arrived safely and soundly in the south of The Carolinas.
I must confess I did not travel at all well, as I spent most of yesterday afternoon and a goodly 9 hours last night trying to recuperate from the flight. I was tired, tired, tired. And I slept very well.
Today I am full of vim, have a little vigor, and have been well fed!!!
Many things are afoot, and possibly ahand, for the "observance" of holiday rituals for the next two weeks...all of them a departure from "the plan" I was told about only this past Sunday.
We are not going "there" for Christmas Eve, we're going "here", instead. Blame it all on something or other that happened during Thanksgiving when all the planning was done. Afterthoughts led to repercussions in who was willing to do what at what risks, etc., etc. Bottom line: Some family members are "embarrassed" at what transpired during Thanksgiving and don't wish to witness a repeat. Other family members are "afraid" of doing anything for "a group of us" because a certain family member may turn up and repeat his antics from Thanksgiving. So...it's going to be small gatherings, unplanned, unforced, unexpected...but we all "expect" they'll take place. We simply haven't gotten around to planning "when" the spontaneity will occur and at "whose" house in which "town". We may even host a spaghetti lunch on Christmas day for a small group.
It's a "tawdry" dilemma being dealt with in a Southern way. I'm relishing it all!
I've acquired some "flat rate" postage boxes to ship stuff home...cans of Brunswick stew, jars of "Carolina-style" barbecue sauce, Duke's mayonnaise, etc.
Tomorrow, my mom, aunt and cousin Debra and I were supposed to do our annual trip to Greenville SC. Instead, my mom, aunt and I are going to Spartanburg to do our annual "placing-of-flowers" on gravesites of family. Debra's hubby, Rob, has surgery tomorrow to replace a wire in his pacemaker. It's supposedly non-invasive as a procedure (no cutting open of the chest), but it's delicate.
We've decided to go to Greenville on Monday when Debra can join us.
Tomorrow, I'll take my mom to CostCo in Spartanburg where she'll get her own card (as my family member) and we will shop for a smallish HDTV for her. I have visions of a 21-incher, but she'll probably pick the smallest one available. She wanted to replace the TV in her bedroom, but has decided she'll replace that one with the one in her kitchen and we'll shop for a set that will fit in the kitchen, which is where she watches most of her daytime TV.
The weather is odd, to me. It's warmish, dankish, foggy-ish, and sticky-ish. We expect change on Sunday. Sigh. We're running the dehumidifier right now. My mom feels it's on the cool side, but I am more of a mind that it's "warm and sticky". And that's life, isn't it!
Ciao-ders for now-ders....
-
I am imagining, in my mind's eye, the MAD Magazine parody of HHW. ;D
[and, on a side rant, why do you never hear about the mind's elbow, or the mind's pinky, etc., etc. and so forth?]
As in....
"I scraped my elbow and it both hurt and made me laugh. Fortunately, my mind's elbow is all right...and unamusing."
Or...
"I was trying to force the tarp to snap into place and I jammed my mind's pinky. Happily, my hand's pinky is fine and there is no swelling to speak of."
? ? ?

Glad to hear that all is well, DR Ron Pulliam! :)

If you mean by that that all is "wet and deep", then thanks! :D

Does anybody on this board know what actress Julie Gregg is doing these days?
She was in THE GODFATHER, MAN OF LA MANCHA and on Broadway in THE HAPPY TIME.
She used to be a publicity client of mine and I've lost contact with her.
Thanks.
-
Do the eyes in the back of your head count?
Only the ones that are dotted.
-
Do the eyes in the back of your head count?
Absolutely!! But I thought only Moms acquired those?! [out of necessity] ;)
-
All the goings and comings and doings at the Pulliams rival the intrigues at Gosford Park!
-
Julie Gregg as far as I know is not here in Indiana.
-
I think DR DtM said it correctly when he said that MAMMA MIA was not well directed.....many scenes and songs were really staged, filmed, edited in a clumsy way that did not do the performers any favors.....
BUT he also said something very important, and that is Ms Meryl Streep's handling of "Winner Takes All" - mostly the movie is fun and I do enjoy it.

And most importantly for me a supersized TOP CHEF New York.

True to PDX tradition, they're predicting a huge storm today, and so closed school. Of course, nothing storm-wise this morning. Zip.
-
I saw "Mamma Mia" on the plane trip from San Francisco to Atlanta.
It wasn't Blu-ray, and it wasn't in stereo. But I LOVED it!
-
JR you are welcome to come here anytime to cuddle with BeeGee and Blanche. If you can find room on the bed once they're both up there. :)
-
As I said in my review of Mamma Mia, I went in expecting to hate, hate, hate it, and actually loved, loved, loved it.
-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... Well, I guess it is "Good Afternoon" by now.. And the snow is gone. :-\
-
But we're supposed to get another "storm" coming through on Friday, and another on one Sunday.
Hmm... Guess I should finalize my travel plans for this weekend... Or early next week.
-
DR JOSE what is Lisa Mandel doing now?
-
Thanks DR SINGDAW.....
And thanks to DR JMK for the invitation......
-
OH!
So... My brother, Mike, will be heading back up to NYC on the 28th and 29th - basically a "long" overnight trip. He'll be bringing all three kids with him - although, Emily may end up staying down in Virginia with her Mom. And my parents will be coming up with them!
Since they'll be driving up, and since they're coming up during a "peak" week, they'll be staying in Weehawken, and just taking the ferry back and forth to Manhattan. Now I just need to see what else they can do and see in less than 48 hours in NYC. The Radio City Christmas Spectacular is the only thing that is a "definite", and now I need to investigate what other activities would be be "family-friendly" - with a family equaling a father, three kids and their grandparents. Oh, and I guess an uncle too. :)

Welcome Home, DR Ron Pulliam. :)
*Hmm... Thanks for reminding me to stock up on Duke's when I head back down to VA next week.
-
DR JOSE - have you made it up to the Museum of the City of New York yet? It should be pretty close to your house.....it's like 105th and 5th or something like that.
If you live in the area and say "I'm a neighbor" when you walk in, the visit is FREE!
-
DR JOSE what is Lisa Mandel doing now?
I'm not sure, although I actually still see Lauren Mufson - the Donna from that tour - and her husband - and their new daughter(!) - from time to time. Next time I see them, I'll ask. Although, there are bunch of people from Tour 2 who, after their contracts were up, went into other aspects of the "biz". When you and DR Ginny and her DH Richard and former DR Joey came to see the show in Indianapolis, they had already been on the road for almost three or four years, and some of the people on that tour had been with it since the beginning.
-
If you live in the area and say "I'm a neighbor" when you walk in, the visit is FREE!

It's still on my "To-Do" list. Sadly. I've walked by it a few times, but have yet to go in. I keep getting "distracted" by MoMA... and The City, itself.

My question for ASK BK day......what is your favorite Ronald Stein score?
Easy - Dementia 13. An amazingly good score - when I did my Ron Stein album, his widow, Harlene, gave me a couple pages of his original score.
-
It is snowing in Tacoma. I am not at work today.
Coincidence? I think not.
-
I'm up, and it's raining, so no long jog, at least this morning. I guess jogging will be sporadic until we get over this little LA storm. And that's okay - I'll just have to be VERY careful eating-wise.
-
Well, since I slept in this morning... Again... I now need to head out to run some errands before I start playing/working later this afternoon.
Laters...

With all those episodes of THE MOD SQUAD which BK has watched, My QUESTION for ASK BK DAY is:
Did you notice Jack Stillman, aka Jack Wrangler in one of those episodes?
I ask because I've heard that the dear Mr. Wrangler is seriously ill with emphysema and in a care home.
I only recently watched the documentary JACK WRANGLER: ANATOMY OF AN ICON and found Mr. Wrangler to quite charming, open and honest.
I'm planning on sending him a "Thinking of You" card through a series of mutual friends.

Isn't he Maried merried married to Margaret Whiting?
-
Mr. Wrangler is indeed the husband of Margaret Whiting, whom, I believe - if the documentary footage is recent - is not in the best of health, either.
-
A sizable chunk of ANATOMY OF AN ICON deals with the repercussions of the Whiting/Wrangler hook-up and its effects on Whiting's daughter from a previous marriage.

DR Ron, I’m happy you have arrived safely at your destination in spite of the difficulties getting there. I’m very pleased you are enjoying the family dramatics. ;D
-
Comfort vibes to DR JRand who is missing all his doggies.
-
DR Ron, Glad you are safe and enjoyed the inflight movie. Tis the season for family drama. I'll get my dose next week.
-
Better work later
-
I am very much looking forward to DAMAGES. I thoroughly enjoyed Season 1 and look forward to seeing how the story continues.
-
DR DerBrucer, where is your son-in-law tonight?
-
It's been a rather miserable day here. Not as warm as yesterday nor as warm as they predicted, and the gray has not abated. It's WET without actually raining right at the moment.
-
I watched two episodes of THE TUDORS when I got in from lunch. The first got the business of the REformation going strong. And some major characters are introduced that we'll see through most of the season.
-
The second episode is the consummation of the sexual relationship between Anne and Henry while in France. Thomas More has resigned his office and hopes to live a private life.
-
I should be able to get at least two more episodes watched today before I begin watching prime time TV. I'd also like to get LEVERAGE watched from last night and get it cleared off the DVR. We'll see.
-
I did skim through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. No Luke but he was in the previews for tomorrow.
-
Last night we watched the last episode of MY OWN WORST ENEMY :( Of course it had a great cliff-hanger.
I wish TNT would pick this up as a summer show. I bet it would do well following THE CLOSER.
-
DRs Jane and Cillaliz: Thank you! As for the family "drama", I'm certain I'll get over it sooner, rather than later.
I simply haven't been exposed to much of the brouhaha yet! ;)
-
WOD:
Is DR kickshaw likely to return today? If not, will he catch up and see that he and the word of the day are synonymous?
That rather makes him DR Syn(onymous), eh!
-
Well, I've gone and done it! I've lost a day. Today has been Tuesday to me. Monday blurred into Tuesday.
This, despite the fact that I watched the "Biggest Loser" finale last night! (Hooray, Michelle! Boo Hiss, Heba! Hooray, Vickie for not winning any of the prizes!)
Heba DID look awesome, though. As did Amy. But Michelle was dazzling.
I wanted Coleen to look better than she did. The potential is there, but she seems to have "settled" on a weight.
-
Good Afternoon!
Errands accomplished, and I'm now playing for some potential young lions and young lionessess.
-
Btw, if there any DRs hoping to find some accessories for Girl of the Year, Mia, just remember that "she" and her accoutrements will only be available through December 31 at American Girl Place. -The ice skates are already completely sold out, as were the fancy ones for Molly.
:-\
;)
-
DR Ron Pulliam - Was it my imagination - or maybe it was just my tv reception/picture - but were the "transformations" on "The Biggest Loser" this season not as dramatic as in season's past?

-
-And what about the reports of the winner from the first season putting back on all of (lost) weight?
-
So...when I got up this morning and left for work, it was snowing. By the time I got to work (only six minutes later), it had completely stopped. It started snowing again within a half hour or so after I got to work and has not stopped since! Several people didn't come in this morning and several others have already left.
At least, it's the pretty kind of snow...and I don't have to go anywhere tonight! :D

I got a kick out of the fact that America did NOT vote for Heba to be in the final 3. I was VERY happy that Michelle won. Not just because I like her the best, but because she wasn't into all the game playing that the other team was doing.
-
-And what about the reports of the winner from the first season putting back on all of (lost) weight?
You could see it when they showed a photo of part of his face with his son (he's married to the other finalist, can't remember her name) she's kept it off and they didn't show his body just a part of his face, it was not the face of a thin man

DR Ron Pulliam - Was it my imagination - or maybe it was just my tv reception/picture - but were the "transformations" on "The Biggest Loser" this season not as dramatic as in season's past?
I think part of it is that they lost so much while still at the ranch. I remember it was a huge deal in past seasons when someone went over 100 pounds of weight loss and now it's just routine. And remember when they thought it was impossible for a female to win?
-
The biggest transformation to me was Jerry. That one was amazing. He left so early in the game I never thought he would lose that much on his own
-
Here is a photo of Mr Golden Belly enjoying his sunflower seeds. ;D

Oh!
And thanks to a tip from Newyorkology.com via Twitter, I managed to score a ticket to the tour of the Food Network Studios tomorrow morning. In fact, I scored the last one. They are running some "trial tours" right now in the hopes of making them a regular "attraction".
The Iron Chef Kitchen Stadium will be included along with Bobby Flay's and Rachael Ray's sets. And cameras will be permitted and were sort of encouraged during my confirmation phone call.
Needless to say, I'm excited, and since they're down at Chelsea Market, I can grab a latte at Ninth Street Espresso (truly my favorite cup of coffee in the city) and a Fat Witch Brownie too. :)

Yikes! Imagine how the elimintions would go on THAT show
-
I AM SOOO JEALOUS!!! Can't wait to hear all about it.
-
It's been off and on rain/snow for the past couple of days. It's not midwest cold but it's in the mid-30s and in the nighttime it goes down to the low-30s.
I'm not complaining, mind you. I will get a dose of Winter in March when I go to Wisconsin to see Anthony in The Fantasticks.
We still haven't taken any pictures of the tree. Anthony is working on an old scrapbook, making like new again with captions and new pages.
We went to a place called Totally Baked for lunch. They serve baked potatoes (and a few other things including sweet potato gelato). I can't find a Web site but it's a nice place. The potatoes are overstuffed (I had one with smoked bacon, guacamole and sour cream - hey it's the holidays) and Anthony had one with veggie chili. They both came with a small salad with raspberry vinegarette dressing. After stuffing ourselves with our potatoes we split an order of the Sweet Potato Heath Bar Crunch gelato. MMM MMM good.
Jose, have you been there? It's on 18th between 5th and 6th on the south side of the street just east of Academy.
-
-And what about the reports of the winner from the first season putting back on all of (lost) weight?
You could see it when they showed a photo of part of his face with his son (he's married to the other finalist, can't remember her name) she's kept it off and they didn't show his body just a part of his face, it was not the face of a thin man
I think i've asked this before, but... Does "The Biggest Loser" provide any type of post-show follow-up and support for the contestants. -Especially in the psychological area. That's a lot of change to deal with after the cameras stop rolling.

Has anyone seen the new New York City tourism commercials with that awful (IMHO) version of "A Train"? They don't even use the II7b5 structure that makes the whole song so distinctive.

DR JOSE keep your eyes peeled for Alton Brown.

Will do, although I only seem to run into him at airports.

It's been a nice vacation, full of naps and get togethers and also doing nothing. I'm looking forward to going out to LI on Monday. We will probably be ther until Saturday or Sunday. I will sleep, eat, do nothing and probably try to walk on the treadmill at least once.
I should try to go to the theatre but it's nicer to just stay home and watch videos curled up on the couch.
-
Oh, it's the Season 2 winner, Matt who I saw in the photo and who looked like he had gained his weight back.
-
Hmmm so it may be a benefit to be voted off fairly early in the show. You'd have to learn to lose weight on your own rather than the methods on the ranch

This is the tale of 2 contestants on the season one show of the Biggest Loser. Contestant number 1, Andrea Baptiste, started off the season one show weighing in at 215 lbs and lost a remarkable 56 lbs. While she was not the “winner”, she has lost an additional 8 lbs since the show. Contestant number 2 and season one winner, Ryan Benson , “won” by losing 122 lbs. However, 3 years later Ryan has gained back most of the weight and weighs close to 300 lbs.

Cilla, I finished reading the new Titanic book.
What did you think?
I thought the book was carefully laid out, the theory was explained in enough detail to make sense, without overwhelming the reader, and I enjoyed the author's style. I think that this book does probably reveal the missing piece of the puzzle that has lasted for 96 years.
Now, having said that, I was horrified by the author's lack of knowledge or research into previously known facts about the sinking; especially considering the pages of sources that he references at the end of the book. Unfortunately, it is a little difficult to accept this bold new theory as fact, when the author doesn't know or seem to care about errors that he states as facts.

Wednesday evening greetings! With 3 days behind us, I am more and more pleased with the choice they made for my replacement.
I'd have to know which episodes.
-
Back from various and sundried errands. Went to Costco and got three big food platters - sandwiches, pinwheels, and some seafood salad platter, and a big chocolate cake.
-
Also had a couple of packages today, including a Japanese import CD of an album I've been hoping would come out on CD since the advent of CD - Michel Legrand's big symphonic suites from Umbrellas of Cherbourg and The Go Between - on Columbia Records back in 1979. It's as fab as I remembered it was.
-
DR DerBrucer, where is your son-in-law tonight?
He arrived safely in Salem, VA just outside Roanoke.

One of the computer servers here at work went down (NOT a euphemism) for a while and it just came back up, but they're closing our building! We can go home! And since the administration made the decision, I don't need to use my personal "inclement weather" leave or my vacation time...it's "emergency leave," use of which is only decided by the building heads. ;D
But I have to mail a package, so that'll give me time to do it before it gets completely dark and even colder. :)
-
So, I'll be back later!

A few pictures from the store...
Let us first say that it is a wonderful year for poinsettias.
(http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b70/GEORDIEMC/Poin0007.jpg)

(http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b70/GEORDIEMC/Poin0004.jpg)
At least, it's a wonderful year for traditional poinsettias.
-
And then...
(http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b70/GEORDIEMC/Poin0005.jpg)
Someone came up with the idea of Hanukkah poinsettias...
(http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b70/GEORDIEMC/Poin0006.jpg)
Take a pink poinsettia, spray it with blue paint and glitter, and you have a brand new holiday tradition!
Gina, our florist, is appalled that she is having to sell these. Der Brucer has likened them to flocked Christmas trees. The rest of us have been shaking our heads in bewilderment. Who comes up with these things?
-
I misplaced my Isosceles triangle. Whatever will I do now?
Try playing the tambourine instead!
-
You've Got My Computer in a State - that's the power ballad from my new musical.
Doesn't one of the verses go something like:
You've got my computer in a state -
Probably one of the lower 48.
But we're now past the expiration date
And I hate
To be such an ingrate
But you've got my computer in a state.
That's the opening verse sung by the chorus dancing with laptops.
Oooh! A laptop dance! I'm ordering my tickets now, before the rush!
-
...We are not going "there" for Christmas Eve, we're going "here", instead. Other family members are "afraid" of doing anything for "a group of us" because a certain family member may turn up and repeat his antics from Thanksgiving....
The odds are, no one had the foresight to record any of what happened and then post it on YouTube. Drat the luck.
-
I saw something on the television about those painted poinsettias when I was at my sister's house. Very odd.
And the Hallelujah Chorus Gone Awry always makes me laugh. Well, cringe, then laugh.
-
Good Evening!
-I think I will need to "rotate" out the "gentle foaming antibacterial soap" that I bought over the weekend. It's a seasonal scent: Fresh Evergreen. However, after I finish washing my hands, all the comes to mind is Brut and/or Hai Karate. It's not altogether unpleasant, but it's definitely not evergreen-y.

DR DerBrucer - It sounds like your Son-In-Law is making good time. And I'm guessing he's taking your originally plotted route? If so, if he wants a nice breather - a.k.a. lunch - he should either stop in Middletown or Winchester, Virginia - right off of 1-81 and 66. Some great places to eat in both towns.
-
I have no idea why a blue & reddish poinsettia looks like Chanukah colors. I'm also shaking my head.

You betcha!
Well, us and a few thousand people on Twitter and Facebook... ;)
But, of course! I have a feeling that I'll be too busy snapping pictures and asking question to Twitter or update my Facebook status during the tour. However, I'm guessing the tour will be good for a few "tweets" here and there, as well as a blog post, or at least a new photo gallery on Flickr and Facebook.
*And I do feel a bit of an obligation to the folks at Newyorkology to "tweet" about the tour, since they were the ones who tipped me off to them in the first place. (Since I don't read the FoodTV blogs, believe it or not.) ;)

The forecast here is now that we will have freezing rain and snow starting tomorrow sometime with an additional 5-7 inches of snow. Then snow on Saturday and snow next Tuesday. There is a real chance that Christmas may be me and the cats! Not sure, but I'm not going to take any chances with the weather and my mother agrees 100%. So, I'm going to get some supplies to make my own traditional dinner just in case. I can always have it later if the weather is good enough to go.
It's very cold out tonight, but I think I'm going to go venture out and go to the grocery store and stock up. I have a feeling I'll be coming home from work early and don't want to try to shop in the bad weather. Laters

Jennifer, did you read this: 'Canadian Idol' canceled in 2009 (http://www.comcast.net/articles/entertainment/20081217/NA.TV.Canadian.Idol/)?
Yes i did. It was in the paper today. I can't quite figure out why. They've done it every year for quite a few years now.

DR Jose - lucky you, getting to tour the Food Network Studios! Can you find out for me how one gets to be one of the diners behind Marc Summers during his Unwrapped intros?

Has anyone read any books by libba bray? I'm on the first book of her gemma doyle trilogy, a great and terrible beauty.
It's quite interesting. But for some reason it's taken me a while to get through it.
Also has anyone read the House of Night series by PC and Kristin Cast. I have the first 3, Marked, betrayed and Chosen.

Thanks, DR Jose. Something about Photobucket has changed. At least as far as my computer goes. The thing I used to click is different now and doesn't copy like it used to.

For any fans - or anti-fans - of Rocco DiSpirito, the New York Times did a lengthy article on him and his recent non-chef-like pursuits in today's Dining section. A very interesting read for a number of reasons, at least to me.

I am reading two absolutely fascinating books right now, books which - at least one of which - DR Jane would probably like to read:
THE DISCOVERY OF HEAVEN:
(according to Amazon):
Dutch novelist Harry Mulisch has created an epic tale of love, friendship, and divine intervention in this cerebral story of heavenly influence. On earth, the novel revolves around the friendship of a brilliant, charismatic astronomer and a talented linguist born on the same day. The two men also happen to share a lover, a woman of simple beauty who is a gifted cellist. These relationships, both intellectual and intimate, produce several intriguing conversations about science, art, and theology, and a child of uncertain paternity. The child's birth is closely followed by a number of mysterious accidents, spirited affairs, untimely deaths, and other acts that reveal the influence of higher powers. Quinten, the star-fated child, has a mission from on high to return the covenant God made with man before he was led astray by science and the dark influence of the devil. An engrossing, and at times comic, story of theology and science, angels, and earthly desires, is cleverly told in this hugely ambitious novel.
. . .and. . .
After reading Steve Berry's THE VENETIAN BETRAYAL, I felt the need to read up on Alexander the Great, so I picked up Steven Pressfield's THE VIRTUES OF WAR, which has Alexander as narrator. . .
-
Hi all! I'm just popping in to say "Hello". I have to say that life can play some very funny games.
I received a phone call from a old friend of mine who has asked me out to dinner several times but each time was when I was dealing with something (like last time was the night I brought Bear home from his surgery). I thought I would never hear from him again but he called again tonight. We had a very pleasant conversation and he asked me to to dinner and movie with him on Saturday. I told him that for once I didn't have any life or death situations going on in my life and I would love to go. We both laughed and he said he would call back on Friday to find out what time we'll go out, to what movie and to what restaurant.
I no sooner hung the phone up and the phone rang again. I thought it was him calling back but it was Thelma telling me that Bill (her husband) almost died last night! I asked her if she needed me to come to her but she said she was ok. She's at the hospital with Bill and just wanted to let me know what had happened.
I'm floored at the timing, if nothing else. I can't believe that not 2 minutes before I said I didn't have any life or death situations in my life right now and this happens.
Please send vibes for Bill.
-

Yes... The links that used to appear right under the picture, now only appear when you mouse-over them. However, you can always click on the pic to bring it up in it's own window, and the proper IMG link will appear to the right of the picture - just click to copy it to your clipboard.

I haven't focused so much on why it sunk as I have the stories of the people on board and the ship in all its grandeur. I'm not sure I know what mistakes you are referring to and would love to hear more about it
One small example is when the author talks about the Titanic shooting off red emergency rockets. The rockets were white. Now, that may seem like a pretty unimportant fact, except that a good portion of the testimony at both the American and British Inquiry into the sinking revolved around whether or not the white rockets fired by the Titanic, were the same white rockets seen by the ship, SS Californian on the night of April 14 - 15. And, if so, did the SS Californian ignore an obvious distress call from another ship that night that was only a few miles away. So, the color of the rockets in Titanic lore is a big deal, and not an unimportant fact.

DR MS, you won't be able to do this through iTunes--Apple is very strict about song transfers being a one-way street from iTunes to iPod.
However, there is third party software out there that will allow you to do this. I used something on my first iPod called Anapod, which allowed two-way transfers. And I think it was able to co-exist on the same PC with iTunes. I would not suggest using it to transfer songs TO your iPod because iTunes will not recognize them when you resync with it.
Another option, though I don't completely recall how to do it at the mo', is to set your iPod to act as an external hard drive before you attach to your PC (it has something to do with the way you push the select and forward and back controls on the click wheel at the same time.) Then after you attach your iPod to your PC, you will be able to see it through Windows Explorer. Then you need to change the configuration of the way you can view the iPod drive in Explorer by allowing you to view hidden folders and files. The songs will then be visible. The problem here is that (at least it was a problem with older iPods) the song file names are encrypted, so you really can't tell what the songs are unless you transfer the entire contents of the iPod back to your PC and then try each song. On second thought, this probably is not a good idea. I would try looking for third party sorftware instead...
-
Back from a surprisingly fun LACCTAA party - as usual, hardly any actual alums could be bothered to show up, but the current students were all there and very appreciative of the food and liquid refreshment. I didn't eat anything and afterwards went to an Eyetalian jernt called Palermo where I had a salad and spaghetti with one meatball and one sausage, and a couple pieces of garlic bread. I basically ate the sausage and the meatball and about a quarter of the spaghetti, leaving the rest, and now I am very full indeed.
-
And now I shall watch a French motion picture from France.

Then after you attach your iPod to your PC, you will be able to see it through Windows Explorer.
Actually... If his iPod was synced with that particular computer and iTunes library, then you can "sync" back to iTunes. -It works the same way iPhone purchases work with iTunes - they sync to iTunes from your phone.
I think.
;)
*DR Michael S - Do you happen to know if the music files have also been deleted from your computer? -Just look under "Music -> iTunes -> iTunes Music ->". -If you still see folders with Artist names - as well as .m4p files in those folders, then your music is still on your computer.

~~~~~VIBES TO BILL AND THELMA~~~~~~
-
Reading the posts from Michael and the suggestions from Jose and Dan makes me realise I am most certainly in a different time zone - on a different planet!
-
I managed to get more watched tonight than I expected. I began with 2 1/2 more episodes of THE TUDORS. Even though most of the shows are almost an hour long, they pass by pretty quickly. I'm enjoying seeing them all again.
Anne has given birth to Elizabeth and miscarried the next child, gradually losing Henry's love day by day. George and Mark are getting close. And Sir Thomas More is now in the Tower but not yet beheaded.
-
It takes a lot these days to make my jaw drop (minds out of the gutter, please), but then I saw this story (http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/Adolf-Hitlers-Birthday-Cake-Nightmare.html) on my local news tonight...
-
At 8:35, I stopped watching THE TUDORS and watched last night's episode of LEVERAGE. Another enjoyable outing even if it didn't quite measure up to the first two. Still, some good surprises and fake-outs by both sides.
And one of the main guest stars is that wonderful actor who plays the psychotic Dr. Charles Walker on MEDIUM. Always enjoy seeing him on any show.
-
Reading the posts from Michael and the suggestions from Jose and Dan makes me realise I am most certainly in a different time zone - on a different planet!
DR Tomovoz, you have no idea how often I long to go back to that planet.
-
LIFE had an entertaining episode tonight with the always great Garrett Dillahunt as the primary guest star. More people should be watching this very entertaining procedural.
-
LAW & ORDER had a good one tonight, too, with Ned Beatty as a judge on the edge of dementia. The case itself was interesting, and then the whole judge problem took over the hour. Very unusual.
-
I thought that headline was CANNIBAL IDOL CANCELED
Eh? What's that? The Cannonball is idle? Cancelled? How'm I suppose to get to Pixley?
-
I'm listening to Mr Michael Ball's "Back to Bacharach" CD. He uses the same effective (to me) gimmick of choosing songs usually associated with female singers.
Wasn't there a Bacharach tribute concert somewhere recently?
-
As for tonight's "Top Chef"....
Eh...
Click your heels together and Believe.
I did record CSI: NY which I'll watch tomorrow as I'm having a snack at lunchtime. I'm invited to a Christmas dinner tomorrow night, so I'll eat something very light at lunch.
-
I'm waiting for the Back to Baklava concert.
Is there one coming up?
-
And now my evening surf is completed and I'm going to head downstairs to bed.
Good night!
They're having a Back to back-crack sale at my chiropractors.
Orange Kitty certainly makes a lovely Christmas ornament.
Cilla, I finished reading the new Titanic book.
What did you think?
I thought the book was carefully laid out, the theory was explained in enough detail to make sense, without overwhelming the reader, and I enjoyed the author's style. I think that this book does probably reveal the missing piece of the puzzle that has lasted for 96 years.
Now, having said that, I was horrified by the author's lack of knowledge or research into previously known facts about the sinking; especially considering the pages of sources that he references at the end of the book. Unfortunately, it is a little difficult to accept this bold new theory as fact, when the author doesn't know or seem to care about errors that he states as facts.
Hmmm you are making me more curious about the errors. I've read a lot about the Titanic and it find it fascinating. I haven't focused so much on why it sunk as I have the stories of the people on board and the ship in all its grandeur. I'm not sure I know what mistakes you are referring to and would love to hear more about it
One small example is when the author talks about the Titanic shooting off red emergency rockets. The rockets were white. Now, that may seem like a pretty unimportant fact, except that a good portion of the testimony at both the American and British Inquiry into the sinking revolved around whether or not the white rockets fired by the Titanic, were the same white rockets seen by the ship, SS Californian on the night of April 14 - 15. And, if so, did the SS Californian ignore an obvious distress call from another ship that night that was only a few miles away. So, the color of the rockets in Titanic lore is a big deal, and not an unimportant fact.
I knew about the Californian controversy about whether they saw the flares, but I wasn't aware that there was an issue about the color of the flares. You're right, you would think someone writing a book about this wouldn't make that mistake.
I know you probably mentioned it before, but how did you first get interested in the Titanic?
-
I wonder if an evening serf has completed and gone downstairs to bed?
All that mumbo jumbo is one reason I have yet to get an IPod or MP3 player...I am just not sure if I could figure out how to work it all! It sounds all very confusing.
Bella Cleaver - I think she was a friend of Lucretia Borgia.
DR Michael: have you tried this:
My soon-to-be cousin recommended it to me when he repaired my computer two weeks ago. . .
Yes, in Portland, but that was a few years ago. ;D
-
Sad to say I'm laughing DR FJL.
It's a slightly manic Thursday here.
-
I'm pretty sure that they said "Get your asp over to TCM tonight" to promote their Egyptian themed evening of movies.
-
Tonight, my wife and I watched THE GREAT LIE w/Bette Davis.
It was very slow going, then just when they got to the most dramatic part, they wrapped the whole thing up in 2 minutes.
Very disappointing.
-
Alright, bed time here. I have to get up early tomorrow to face my fifties.
I'm pretty sure that they said "Get your asp over to TCM tonight" to promote their Egyptian themed evening of movies.
Maybe someone on the East Coast will pick up the idea. Even a Hal David Tribute.
-
A Mack David tribute - members of the Bar association singing Hello Dolly over and over
-
Well I'm lost there DR FJL.
Mock Daffyd. I think that is Welsh soup.
-
Didn't Mack David sue Jerry Herman, saying herman had stolen the tune for Hello Dolly from David's song Sunflower? And david got a nice settlement, reportedly since Herman was under pressure to close the deal on the Hello dolly film rights.
-
I had forgotten that totally DR FJL. and YES.
Thank you for the link DR FJL.
Time for sleep...night all
-
So far the BIG snow storm expected has not happened. G-d I hope it doesn't. I REALLY, REALLY, don't want any snow. I want my children home for the first time in four years. Craig & Ioana arrive tomorrow night.
-
DR Jane - You're up late(r) tonight.
-
And speaking of sleep...
With the addition of the Food Network Studio tour to my schedule tomorrow, I'm going to be in for a long day. Since I'm going to be in the 'hood, I'm going to go ahead and get my hair cut too down at Chelsea Barber - and I'm about a week overdue for a hair cut. I'm gonna try to get down there early enough to get my hair cut before the tour, but if I have to wait for a chair during the lunch "rush" then so be it. Then it's another afternoon of Lion King auditions, followed up by another evening at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall for a recital by the tenor, Paul Groves.
(http://www.carnegiehall.org/common/imgs/mag/groves.jpg)
I'm really looking forward this recital. He and his pianist, Pedja Muzijevic, will be performing song cycles by Beethoven, Britten, Fauré and Rachmaninov. I'm especially eager to hear Britten's "Holy Sonnets of John Donne", and Fauré's "La Bonne Chanson" - they were two of my "Dream Cycles" when I was in school, ones I wanted to play and sing. I just hope my audition session doesn't run over since the recital is at 7:30, and I'm supposed to go until 7:00.
Oh.. Where was I?
Oh, yes...
Goodnight.
I am stuck at the library for "Part Deux of Library study time after midnight"
I am hoping there are no surprises like there was the other night... Not fun to stand outside in -20 after some foolish kids pulled the fire alarm...
BTW, I think I spied bk's errant and curious cows.... They are in the library studying here! They are mooing happily over Organic Chemistry, Calculus and Microbiolgy!
Hi all! I'm just popping in to say "Hello". I have to say that life can play some very funny games.
I received a phone call from a old friend of mine who has asked me out to dinner several times but each time was when I was dealing with something (like last time was the night I brought Bear home from his surgery). I thought I would never hear from him again but he called again tonight. We had a very pleasant conversation and he asked me to to dinner and movie with him on Saturday. I told him that for once I didn't have any life or death situations going on in my life and I would love to go. We both laughed and he said he would call back on Friday to find out what time we'll go out, to what movie and to what restaurant.
Great news, Danise! Enjoy your date with him! ;D
-
I no sooner hung the phone up and the phone rang again. I thought it was him calling back but it was Thelma telling me that Bill (her husband) almost died last night! I asked her if she needed me to come to her but she said she was ok. She's at the hospital with Bill and just wanted to let me know what had happened.
I'm floored at the timing, if nothing else. I can't believe that not 2 minutes before I said I didn't have any life or death situations in my life right now and this happens.
Please send vibes for Bill.
The French movie from France was a complete delight.
Well, I must Wussburger. I'm going upstairs to my bedroom. I have some TV shows that I need to watch on the DVR in my bedroom (then delete from said DVR) and I will also be addressing my holiday cards (I don't have any actual Christmas cards), so good night, all.
They are looking for the coffee pot....
I pose this question..
Is it wise for cows to drink coffee?
DR DerBrucer - It sounds like your Son-In-Law is making good time. And I'm guessing he's taking your originally plotted route? If so, if he wants a nice breather - a.k.a. lunch - he should either stop in Middletown or Winchester, Virginia - right off of 1-81 and 66. Some great places to eat in both towns.
Yup, the original route - and he was pleased with the drive up to Roanoke. As far as lunch goes - he is aiming for home as fast as he can; if the truck didn't need gas he would be wearing Depends. He wants to start off at 3-4AM - I hope my warning about winding roads in foggy hills will be taken and he will wait 'til daylight. A 7 AM departure will get him aroung DC in plenty of time to miss the rush.
