And who is Vick anyway? And how did he come to invent the inhaler, not to mention vapo rub?
According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vicks):
History:
In 1890 pharmacist Lunsford Richardson took over the retail drug business of his brother-in-law Dr. Joshua Vick, of Selma, Greensboro, North Carolina. After Dr Joshua Vick saw an ad for Vick's Seeds, Lunsford Richardson began marketing Vick’s Family Remedies. The basic ingredients of the range included Castor oil, linament, 'dead shot' vermifuge. The most popular remedy was Croup and Pneumonia Salve, which was first compounded in 1891, in Greensboro. It was introduced in 1905 with the name Vick's Magic Croup Salve and rebranded as VapoRub in 1912 at the instigation of Smith Richardson, Lunsford's oldest son; Smith had gained valuable sales and marketing experience while working for a period in New York and Massachusetts after attending college. Smith Richardson assumed the presidency of the company in 1919 upon his father's death.
The flu epidemic of 1918 increased sales of VapoRub from $900,000 to $2.9 million in just one year. In 1948, Edward Mabry became president (the first outside the Richardson family) of Vicks, then known as the Vicks Chemical Company. In 1985, it was sold to Procter & Gamble and Procter & Gamble has since marketed the product as "The only thing more powerful than a mother's touch." VapoRub is currently manufactured and packaged in India and Mexico.
The company archives (including related personal records of the Richardson family) from at least about 1920 or so, up to the 1985 sale to Procter & Gamble, are housed at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Lots of mountains right here in town. Uh, no Taco Bell. If it was just before the overpass, it is a bar/rock concert venue type of place.
My favorite part of the video is when the other train passes and you can see the reflection of my fingers holding the camera.

Good morning, all! I was out of bed by 6:30 since I have a long day today: first thing, I have to cart of lot of accumulated materials back down to Toyland, where I will work on my bibliography for the Babes edition. After that, a meeting with Kim Criswell and Mr John Vogel at Rodgers & Hammerstein at 11. After that, home to await a UPS delivery and at 2pm I have to head to the York Theatre for a reading of a new musical "Shooting Star-the Bobby Driscoll Story." That will put me heading back to the West Side during rush hour, which I hate, but them's the breaks.
I have some vibes to send out to our beloved vixmom for surgery, to singdaw for job vibes, to the vixter for being a great daughter, to Jose for success with THE PRODUCERS, to MBarnum who needs all the help he can get, and to everyone else for health, wealth, or happiness!!

I just posted this story on my Amazon blog, but I thought that you folks migh enjoy it, too:
As those of you who have read ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD: From the Secret Files of Harry Pennypacker know, my book contains a chapter about Elvis Presley.
However, what you probably don't know is that I had an encounter with Elvis way back when I was in college.
My "professional" motion picture career began in 1962, during the summer between my junior and senior years at the University of Washington.
That was the summer of the Seattle World's Fair; the year that Elvis Presley came to town to make a movie.
Elvis and company spent about three weeks in Seattle, filming scenes on and around the Space Needle and other key fairground sites. Extras were being hired locally, so one morning, having nothing better to do, I went down to the location, applied...and was immediately hired.
Hot digity! I was going to be in a movie...produced by MGM, the one-time home of Gable, Garbo, Spencer Tracy, Lana Turner, Lassie, Tarzan, The Marx Brothers and all the other film icons I worshipped.
Me and Elvis! Immortalized on screen together!
Okay, wait. Don’t worry. I’m kidding.
I was never that big of a putz.
Even back then, I knew enough about movies to know what it was like to work as an extra.
I knew that I wouldn't get billing over Elvis.
Seriously though, I didn't really care about the ten dollars and the box lunch I was getting for the day. All I wanted out of this experience was, when the movie was finally released, to be able to see myself up on the big screen.
Easier said than done.
I was astute enough to know that, if I was going to accomplish my goal, I would have to stick close to Elvis. After all, the camera would be following him...not the extras.
The 3rd assistant director, who was in charge of the extras, certainly wasn't any help. He kept placing me way in the background, so that in the final film, I would appear as just another "human ant".
Luckily, this guy didn't hang around after he'd positioned us. He went off and took care his other duties...and I put my plan into motion.
While the director and crew were setting up the rest of the shot, I started working my way up to the front of the crowd...right behind where the main action of the scene was to take place.
I did this all day. Nobody noticed. In fact, at one point, I got to stand right next to Elvis himself and we were having a nice friendly chat...until Colonel Parker, his manager, noticed that a "lowly extra" was talking to "His Highness," and told the assistant director to tell me to stop bothering Mr. Presley.
The a.d. looked at me for a moment, and said, "Don't I know you?"
"I don't think so," I said, trying to look totally innocent.
"Look, kid," the guy said with a wink, "I know what you’re doing. Just be a bit cooler about it." Then, he walked off.
Did I accomplish my goal?
Did Elvis have a pair of "Blue Suede Shoes"?
Of course, I did.
The name of the movie is IT HAPPENED AT THE WORLD'S FAIR, and if you ever catch it on television or DVD, look for the scene where Elvis asks the little boy (Kurt Russell, by the way) to kick him in the shins.
During that brief moment, a 21-year old version of me walks behind them...twice.
I just had to take an encore.
;D

Hugs, vibes and best wishes to our dear Vixmom!!!

DR Matth, i was curious re: what you wrote about how you were okay with who

if the other judges were pressuring simon. It did not look like he wanted to save
matt. And i believe the person he was talking about saving when ryan asked was
lil and not matt. I'm not that thrilled with the judges using their save this week.
I think they should have waited. Won't they be mad if allison gets voted out next
week. I agree that matt was very talented (i would have sent anoop home). But
with so much talent left, to me they should only have saved if adam, danny, allison,

one of them will be a horrible surprise. And another thing that made me mad,
simon thought kris was fantastic last night. Kris could have been in major danger

Yes, DR Jennifer, I did see the show. I guess I meant to write who finished last in the voting rather than who was sent home. Yes, I think they used their save one week too early. But if that helps get Lil off the show next week, it will suit me. I don't think she's nearly as good as she was touted to be. I agreed with Randy (for a change). I thought Kris had his worst week in ages this past week. Very bland and uninvolving for me.

A few years ago someone told me that Vick's was going to stop making the Inhaler. Now I need to go cut my toenails.
Are you going to contemplate them first, a la TD?

I can't think of any classy Tony Award-winning singing actresses who would be having an affair with someone in the cast of Hair. But then again, I don't really know who's won Tonys and who hasn't. I don't think of Patti LuPone as classy - she's a dame and a fun one. Bernadette Peters hasn't married again and she's got enough Hair to last her a lifetime. Sutton Foster, I think I remember reading, has been down this road but I don't think of her as classy - too young, and I think the reverse situation was happening - someone she was with was having an affair - or maybe not, can't remember the details because with these young kids today, who cares. Elaine Stritch - has she married again?

DR DAW - I had the same "problem" when I was living in Virginia when I applied for unemployment. I lived in Virginia, but most of my work was in DC. Thankfully, Virginia had a corollary agreement with DC, so I did not have to apply in DC, at the DC offices. However, it did end up having to wait an extra week for my first payment to show up due to the difference in disbursement procedures. So, coupled with the mandatory one-week waiting period, it was almost a full four weeks before I received a check. -And, then, of course, by that time, I had already lined up another gig.

One of my favorite candies was Life Savers "Wint-o-green". Used to open my sinuses instantly. I'm still a fan of the Vick's inhaler and I make sure I always have one nearby. I don't use it very much, but when I need it, I need it!

Ah, well! That's the "BIG" mystery, isn't it! Why "these" people and the circumstances under which they were brought together? Blame the island. It seems to be in charge. :) The odds you cite above (and sorry for misreading that) can be applied to Jack's return, Kate's giving up Aaron and returning, of Locke's miraculous return, etc., etc.
I'm just aghast that the space-time continuum hasn't convulsed several times as these folks continually stumble over themselves in different time periods. And I've been wondering where Daniel went. He was there with his friend's body and then he was unaccounted for. I must have blinked or something. And with next week's previews, I'm agog all over again.

I'm sure that everyone here has, at one time or another, performed the Wintermint LifeSaver experiment.

I"m awake. TOD - Jolly Ranchers, but less lately as I've been watching the sugar intake.
Today, I have to head to the theatre to set the pit up for The King and I orchestra sing-through, then going for dinner with my favorite horn player before rehearsal.

TOD - these are some of my favorites, especially the Chocolate and Cafe Latte flavors. Can't get 'em around here, but maybe I should order some online.

I used to keep Hall's cherry eucalyptus cough drops in my pocket as breath mints back when I taught school. I always had a horror of bending down to help a child at his desk and having bad breath blown into their faces. I had some teachers who had that problem, and I didn't want to repeat that with my students.
This was very thoughtful of you-honest, funny & nice. :)

What a good episode last night! I am really liking miles. And i love that we got
to see his backstory. Were we supposed to know that he had been on the island
before? I loved watching him watch little miles. And i loved finding out who his
father was (although it became sort of obvious before they actually said it). But
still. Very cool development. And I was just thinking while watching it that i missed
daniel farady. But what a nice surprise to see him get off the sub. I can't wait
to see how that develops. It's interesting how jack is hardly on these days. And
i'm waiting to find out how jin and sun can be reunited and what will happen with
locke and ben. But i love this show. They are doing great work this season!

I agree, it was a good episode. My only disappointment was that it did not turn out that Hurley would be the one who somehow influenced what numbers would be used for the Hatch--I think that would have made a lot of sense. My dad was a huge fan of that ribbon and jelly-filled hard candy that used to come in big tins around Christmas time. The ribbon candy was alright but I couldn't stand how the insides of the jelly-filled would stick to my teeth like glue.

GENERAL LOST MUSING:
I was just thinking (always a dangerous thing), when Naomi parachuted to the island, she had a picture of Desmond and Penny. She would have gotten the picture from Windmore since she worked for him...but WHY did she have the picture? Did Windmore know that Desmond was on the island? And how would he know that Desmond was on the island? Even if Windmore set up his yacht race course to go through one of those "windows" when the position of the island was known, wouldn't it be a longshot for him to suspect that Desmond would be there? Was Windmore behind Libby's gift of her husband's yacht to Desmond? What was Libby doing in the mental hospital with Hurley? Why does that bounty hunter woman look so much like Ana Lucia? What lies in the shadow of the statue???
My head hurts...

Here's a blind item: has anyone heard any gossip concerning a Tony-winning clebrated "classy" married singiong actress having an affair with one of the leads in the HAIR revival? I heard it last night and thought, oh, she's too classy to get down and dirty with anybody!
DR Jose, have you heard this evil speculation? I thought you might since it's supposed to have been going on for some time and you know the actor in HAIR..
Wow! I can't imagine Ethel Merman having an affair with anyone from the cast of HAIR; but then she did marry Ernest Brognine for a few hours. Oh, you meant a living actress!

Yesterday morning, I headed off to work feeling kind of weird; but since I am pretty weird, I didn't worry too much about it. At my desk, I kept having a terrible time staying awake. This situation was not helped by the woman who kept coming by my desk screaming at me for being asleep in my cubicle. By noon, I was hit with severe chills, a pounding headache, and such terrible stomach cramps that I wasn't sure I could make it to the restroom. I managed to finish my day at two, but by the time I got home, I was so sick that I went right to bed where I slept on and off until about an hour and a half ago.
I still feel horrible, and will probably climb back into bed very shortly. Alas, Angel apparently has the flu, too.

I think I need to go back to bed.

I now have my car, plus the multitude of files that were stashed in the trunk. Many of these were tax files, which would be a real nightmare to try to replace. But all is well on that front.

Get-well-soon vibe to TCB!
Happy anniversary to JMK and DS Betsy. And congrats as well.

TOD:
I never had an "addictions" that I recall, but I have used Ricola cough drops many times. I was very pleased to discover them, as they are sooo much more effective than the others I'd tried.

Thanks to all for the encouragement. Not only are my toenails now cut, but I have drained the sinks, installed a seat cover in my new car for Zach, and several other various and sundried projects. And I have never written in a journal before, but I decided to start one. Might be interesting to look back on later. I am sparing no one and no thing, and I am naming names!! ;)
Oh, and yes - I also enlisted with the Connecticut Department of Labor. It was relatively painless - but I do have to have a hearing, since I got some severance from my old company. To quote DR JRand58: "Ah, well!" :)
To maintain my elligibility, I only have to make 3 "contacts" per week. It will take a whole lot more than that to land a new job, but for benefits purposes, it doen't sound particularly onerous.

I am back from a most unpleasant dentist appointment. Because I have been lax (I admit it), due to my never having had a cavity, they had to "make up for lost time," which involved them shooting me full of novocaine so that they could use a sonic blaster to clean my teeth. And they only did half today! Oy! I had more shots today than I think I've had in the past 25 years combined.

DR Jeanne - glad that you and your car and your papers are reunited. :)

BTW, DR FJL:
any suggestions for selecting a new CPA? My tax situation is fairly complicated, but not the worst. I'm looking for someone good at answering questions in a way that a non-accountant can understand, and be available for the odd tax question or two throughout the year.

I may have forgotten to wish DR JMK and Betsy a Happy Anniversary. Remember, you can sue her for $250,000 for future earnings.
-
Oh dear, DR ELMORE....well that story has found its way to Indiana and the names bandied about include Lizzie Curry and Cody Bridger.
-
Tonight is music only....Tom Dick or Harry, Wunderbar, So In Love, We Open in Venice, etc....... but I do not think I have to play the piano.

To DR JMK and Betsy!

-
Jeanne - I don't know what to say any more about selecting a CPA. It seems more and more prevalent that someone iwll offer you a lowball fee the first year or two as a loss leader, and then increase it substantially later. so i'd say don't make long-term professional-hiring decisions by price of the service.
-
DR Jose - does the rental package for The Producers come with the CD with the Mel Brooks cameo in "Springtime for Hitler" - or is there a special rule that you CANNOT use his vocal cameo?
DR Matthew - It comes with everything but that strangely enough. However, they are "advertising" being able to rent the original keyboard programming samples - which includes the mirror break, cat screeching, bomb drops, etc. - so it might be on there. However, I also remember when I played on the tour, that Mel's voice was triggered from the sound board and not from the pit's click-track nor my keyboard part.
-
Good Afternoon!
Well, I got the "old" car back a few hours ago, and it really does seem to be fixed right now. In fact, it almost feels "too fixed". -Maybe I just got used to that "not fixed feeling"? ;)
-
I've been packaging orders, trying to organize things - boxes pile up when one is releasing CDs every couple of weeks - not just CD boxes, but shipping boxes, boxes of shipping supplies, tapes - but I dealt with a lot of it this morning. Listening to Two For The Seesaw as I do it.
-
And when I went to pick up the car, well...
The artistic director of the theatre called me this morning to explain the where and how of the car swap out. She lives right near the dealership, and had originally planned to go get the car herself, and then somehow get back and then get her own car again. Well, since I had nothing planned for today, I told her I would be more than happy to head over there myself and swap the car out myself, saving everyone involved a lot of extra driving and "inconvenience". Well...
Apparently, the person at the car repair desk was not being cooperative this morning with the artistic director. They car had actually been promised for pick-up yesterday, but since the temporary tags on the "new" car expired yesteday, we really had to get back a car, any car by today. Long story short, the AD eventually had to tell(!) the clerk at the dealership that the wife of the owner of the dealership had just joined their Board of Directors. And that seemed to get through to the clerk at the repair desk. So...
When I went to pick up the car, I just walked up to the desk, and told the clerk that I was there to swap out the car for Charleston Stage. The look on the young woman's face was priceless, a truly pained smile. She simply turned around, grabbed the key off the hook on the wall, turned back around to me, took my "old" key, and then handed over the "new" key. "Thank You, very much." -And that was truly all she said. ;)
-
Best of vibes to DR JOSE on his hoi polloi opening night!
Merci buckets, DR JRand. Tonight should be fun. I just hope they laugh. Of course, the pre-show wine reception will either make them very receptive or very sleepy. We shall see.
*And then there's the post-show reception which will have a show-themed buffet. Apparently, it will be a mix of NY Deli food and German treats. Hmm...
-
-And then after the post-show reception, I'm supposedly taking part in another opening night "tradition": karaoke at a "special interest" establishment.
My mantra for tonight will be: "I will not end up on YouTube."

DR DAW - When you check in with the DofL, do you have to do that in person? by phone? by mail? or by computer?
*I think I only had to check in with "two" contacts each week the one time I took unemployment, and the DC DofL would mail you a form with two checkboxes on it when they mailed out your check. I still remember the clerk telling me just to check the boxes and send the form right back to insure that my next check arrived on time. "No one checks." :-\

ASSOCIATED PRESS (http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/04/16/gov-paterson-announces-plans-legalize-sex-marriage-new-york/)
Gov. Paterson Announces Plans to Legalize Same-Sex Marriage in New York
...
"I'm introducing a bill to bring marriage equality to the state of New York," Paterson said to applause, surrounded by leaders including Mayor Michael Bloomberg and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who is a lesbian.
Paterson, who is black, framed the issue in sweeping terms, invoking abolitionists Frederick Douglass and Harriet Beecher Stowe and drawing a parallel between the fight to eliminate slavery in the 1800s to the current effort to allow gay marriage.
"Rights should not be stifled by fear. What we should understand is that silence should not be a response to injustice. And that if we take not action, we will surely lose," Paterson said.
Paterson said gay and lesbian couples are denied as many as 1,350 civil protections -- such as health care and pension rights -- because they cannot marry.

One of my favorite candies was Life Savers "Wint-o-green". Used to open my sinuses instantly. I'm still a fan of the Vick's inhaler and I make sure I always have one nearby. I don't use it very much, but when I need it, I need it!
I love Life Savers "Wint-o-Green"! Especially the super-sized, individually wrapped ones! Other than that, I'm really not much of a fan of hard candies. For a while now, I've really been into the cool mint Listerine pocket strips. I haven't seen them at Costco in quite a while, so I bought some on eBay. They arrived last week and I'm VERY happy! ;D

Here's a walk down memory lane for some of us! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftBMALUd21U)
One of our TV stations used to sign on (around 11 a.m.) with this. This was in the "olden days" when "some" TV stations didn't broadcast 24-7. Some were on air only 11 a.m to midnight in those "yonder years."

As for the Topic of the Day...
I still like Ricola's. I do like some of their fruitier and herbier flavors, but I usually go back to their original flavor, formulation.
Which is the original? The ones i always use (which i wouldn't call candy but more of a medicine) are the dark green wrappers the echinichea (sp?) ones. If i get a tickle in my throat i always use these.

Did someone mention allergies! I forgot the deck was having stain put on today & the entire house smells of chemicals I'm allergic to. It could be worse but the last thing I needed was something that makes me itch from the inside out.
I'm going to take a nap, if possible. I need about 30 more hours of sleep.

re: american idol
What fascinates me is why anybody would have to rely upon what one of the judges said in order to evaluate how to feel about a performance.
Not everybody is an expect in music to know if someone is singing a note sharp or flat or a note off-key.
I think that in kris' case randy said he was horrible. Not that people necessarily listen to randy. But he was saying it was bad (off pitch ...). If they had heard simon say kris was amazing (i think simon's opinion carries more weight), i think that would have made a difference.
I can't fully understand it if people have their favorites. But the weeks simon has said that adam was not good, he didn't do as well in the voting. And weeks simon said adam was incredible - adam placed 1st (not that you watch or even know who i am talking about).

Vibes for DR TCB. Feel better soon! ` ````````~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I've heard Randy Jackson praise more crap than anyone. It's a wonder to me he's still a "judge" on the show.
NOT that any of them are "judges" in the truest sense. They're "talent raters".
As for folks not knowing if something is good or not (or sharp or flat or on pitch), I have to say they should probably not vote at all since they have no ability to determine what is good and what isn't. It amazes me they even watch the show.

~~~Feel and Get Better Vibes for TCB and Angel!!~~~
I am back from a most unpleasant dentist appointment. Because I have been lax (I admit it), due to my never having had a cavity, they had to "make up for lost time," which involved them shooting me full of novocaine so that they could use a sonic blaster to clean my teeth. And they only did half today! Oy! I had more shots today than I think I've had in the past 25 years combined.
My semi-annual dentist appointment is next Tuesday. I haven't gotten a cavity since high school. :)
Most of this may be old new for the DRs of this here site, but here's an Interview (http://www.charlestonstage.com/interviews/) of moi on Charleston Stage's own site.
Congrats, Jose! Great interview! And break a leg, tonight!
One of my favorite candies was Life Savers "Wint-o-green". Used to open my sinuses instantly. I'm still a fan of the Vick's inhaler and I make sure I always have one nearby. I don't use it very much, but when I need it, I need it!
I love Life Savers "Wint-o-Green"! Especially the super-sized, individually wrapped ones! Other than that, I'm really not much of a fan of hard candies. For a while now, I've really been into the cool mint Listerine pocket strips. I haven't seen them at Costco in quite a while, so I bought some on eBay. They arrived last week and I'm VERY happy! ;D
Those Listerine strips are addictive. I have some in a drawer here at work.
The ones I bought on eBay were sold from New Jersey, but the packaging indicates that they were made for Greece! All the writing is in both English and Greek! But now I'll be able to have them for quite a while...the auction was for 200 packs! :D And even with shipping, they averaged out to be 26¢ each!! That was a good deal...of course, they're expired but, oh well. I haven't died yet. ;)
Nikki and Paolo is my guess. ;)
Funny!
Break a leg, Jose!
Best of vibes to DR JOSE on his hoi polloi opening night!
Merci buckets, DR JRand. Tonight should be fun. I just hope they laugh. Of course, the pre-show wine reception will either make them very receptive or very sleepy. We shall see.
*And then there's the post-show reception which will have a show-themed buffet. Apparently, it will be a mix of NY Deli food and German treats. Hmm...
Does it include many different herring?
D'oh! Beaten to the punch by DR Ginny!
Well, I feel like I'm starting to get a cold and I can't seem to stay awake, so I'm going home. I need to take out my contacts and take a nap.
Until later!
Here's a walk down memory lane for some of us! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftBMALUd21U)
One of our TV stations used to sign on (around 11 a.m.) with this. This was in the "olden days" when "some" TV stations didn't broadcast 24-7. Some were on air only 11 a.m to midnight in those "yonder years."
Sounds like the Mitch Miller Singers (all of that ILLYA reverb going on.)
What lies in the shadow of the statue?
Nikki and Paolo is my guess. ;)
There's another question: what happened to all of those spiders with the death-like state bite? Not one other castaway was ever bitten?
BREAK LEGS VIBES TO DR JOSE!
MERDE!
DR elmore - As per that "blind item"... Hmmm... There are a couple of "candidates" in the cast of Hair. I may have to do some investigatin'.
Supposedly, it's Will Swenson and Audra MacDonald.
Oy, such a long day I've had! I've done my Toyland research, my McGlinn estate obligations, and then I attended the readng of a new musical SHOOTING STAR: THE BOBBY DRISCOLL STORY, which was quite wonderful, book, music and lyrics by Michael Dansicker. The role of Driscoll was divided between a child, Matthew Gumley, who was amazing, and Mark Price, who was quite wonderful. Dee Hoty had an amazing comedy star turn as Frances Farmer, who had an hilarious duet with Mark Price about narcotics, liquor, and Hollywood. A very sad show, but there were many funny moments.
Ask BK:
Okay, I know that YESTERDAY was Ask BK day, but I've gotten behind on my notes-reading again, and just finished reading the draft-dodging story. And now I'm completely stymied as to what the heck a "box-folding question" is. I called Mark on the phone and asked him and we couldn't figure out if it's an origami exercise where you have to fold paper into boxes, or if it's some kind of a multiple choice thing. Help!
I don't know if rootbeer barrels are my favorite, but they are a most enjoyable candy. They're just so much fun because they're actually shaped like barrels with the lines and everything. Anyway, Mark loves to tell me that all the gem stones in my jewelry just look like Sucrets to him.
-
Coming to HHW almost everyday is always a joy, yes even when we have a little disagreement now and then but I just can't help feeling sad and helpless when I read the pains DR Vixmom is going through and I know we all deeply hurt right now!
That's all I can say now!
Caring thoughts for DR Daw too!
I just spoke to vixdad. Debby had her gall bladder out at about 15:00 EDT. She is feeling good, sitting up, talking, planning to call me later. He is now going to take the vixter out to a diner for a bite to eat. She is evidently remaining in the hospital for another day or so.
Thanks for the update on DR Vixmom.
Strange ITunes moment; i was in the mood for some Connie Francis, so I revved up her MGM album HAPPINESS, and to my surprise and delight she was singing "Illya Darling." It's a great little recording!
Vibes for Vixmom!
My dental day continued: since I have only had novocaine a couple of times in my life, I am completely unused to the sensation and realized too late that I had half-chewed off the inside of my lower lip whilst eating a little lunch today. I resemble the loser of a fist fight. ;)
-
Glad to hear the news about our dear Deb.
-
I'm listening to Oh, Coward!
-
The New Theatre in New York City no longer exists. It's where Oh Coward opened on October 4, 1972 with Barbara Cason, Roderick Cook and Jamie Ross.
-
Greetings from the Apple Store in downtown Palo Alto, CA. My pal, Cathleen (the horn player) and I had some dinner after I set up the pit and are now heading back to the theatre for the sing through. I'm down the 'cello and the "harp" tonight, so it looks like I'll be playing "piano" instead of filling in other brass and double reeds. But at least we'll get some time with the cast and orchestra before next Tuesday.
-
I saw Next to Normal when it played at Second Stage. I loved it then (it had some problems but it was still powerful and moving). I wasn't planning on seeing it before it opened because I had already seen it AND because I just finished my marathon.
But, those devils worked on the show for the Arena Stage production. When it got back to New York it was on TDF all the time. It opened last night to some great reviews. Now the TDF tickets are no longer. It will probably be on TKTS but I was hoping for a TDF ticket. I do want to see it again since I hear the changes really helped the show. Alice Ripley was amazing Off-Broadway and based on these reviews I'm sure she will at least get a Tony nomination if not the actual trophy. I hope to see it again before the Tonys in June.
-
Ginny, I hope to Blithely walk to the Post Office tomorrow and put a Spirited little prize in the mailbox to a town in mid-South Ohio. Perhaps it will find its way to you :D
Larry, all you need to do is wait until Saturday. Helen Mirren and Noel Coward on the same night!
IN THE NOH: Beauty, Splendor, and Wonder
By: DAVID NOH
04/02/2009
Some actors were just born to play certain parts and, from everything I now know about Gavin Creel, the role of Claude, who gets drafted and then killed in Vietnam, in "Hair" was meant for him.
"I don't think of it as a legendary part," he told me, "because that will intimidate me and I won't be able to do it. My approach is a human sense of him, which I hope comes across. I don't wanna play a hippie - he's a young man who's stuck between his sense of duty and his love of expression in a world his parents didn't show him. I sort of feel like him, in the sense that I'm from Ohio, a very structured place, and came to New York to be in musical theater with all kinds of people, an incredibly diverse profession.
"I did the Encores! revival in 2000, as part of the Tribe. I'd auditioned for Claude then and didn't get it and now I'm so glad, because then I wouldn't have understood how to play the part. I met [the show's creators] Gerome Ragni and Jim Rado, who's still such a hippie, an amazing free spirit who is not stuck in an era, but completely present and beautiful. He showed me an old character synopsis for Claude that said, 'He doesn't play the end -- he's a lover and the ultimate flower child, who doesn't want to go to war and die but he does, and doesn't know what's going to happen.'
"What's cool about this production is that it honors the time but is completely new, without being anachronistic, i.e., 'this is Iraq.' No, it's Vietnam, and the way Diane Paulus has staged it makes it just as relevant in 2009. 'Hair' had this amazing run in the park this summer, which I wasn't a part of, and Diane's concept was the whole Tribe got in their Love Bus and drove down to 45th Street, and just took over the abandoned Al Hirschfeld Theater. We snuck in and set up shop everywhere - backstage, the hallways, our dressing rooms are decorated - much of what the audience doesn't even see. And the way our brilliant set and lighting designers have done it with Diane, it's not just happening on the stage, but in the audience - you're not gonna be able to escape us!"
The essential spirit of rebellion has been on Creel's mind a lot: "I'm waking up and started a foundation, a grassroots coalition of the theater community in support of marriage equality, Broadway Impact. Right after Proposition 8 passed, Join the Impact organized big rallies in 300 cities and we were inspired by them. Broadway Cares' Tom Viola is mentoring us and we're working with Empire State Pride Agenda and Marriage Equality New York.
"It's an awesome time to be alive and love yourself and not be apathetic, which is as bad as being on the other side. I've been stuck myself because for the longest time I wasn't out in the press and was like 'I don't wanna talk about this -- what if I don't get jobs?' Fuck that shit-- fuck it! If I don't get a job because I'm gay, then I don't want that job. At the end of the day, it's really boring if you're not living your life.
"I just woke up. I have a pop album, 'Good Time Nation,' and my co-writer Robbie Roth, the biggest straight ally on the planet, came to me with this lyric 'Don't be alarmed, Mom/ Don't be ashamed/ I'm still your baby/ I'm still the same.' He asked, 'Can you write this?' I wasn't publicly out then, but had to finish that lyric: 'Feelings come quickly/ Some pass you by/I feel a stillness in not asking why/ There's a road that's divided in two/ All of us here have to find/ Most everyone goes the same way/You just love me as I go my mine.' I can't tell you how many young men contact me on Facebook and write stuff like, 'I want you to know that my Mom and I listened to that song together and cried,' or 'Thanks for speaking my heart --my parents kicked me out,' or whatever."
When I mentioned all the other out and proud Broadway actors there are now - Cheyenne Jackson, Malcolm Gets, Christopher Sieber - Creel interrupted me, "Cheyenne is totally inspiring to me. I didn't really say this in the press - I never read message boards or reviews, I'm too insecure and don't wanna know what horrible things people are saying about me - but I met Cheyenne when he was my understudy in 'Thoroughly Modern Millie.' I don't know when he came out, but he just owned it and he's a fuckin' superstar -- a knockout, super-talented, and a wonderful guy who lives an exemplary life. He's way more fabulous than I'll ever be. He's shiny; I just avoid the camera. I actually read the interview with him in Gay City News and that inspired me. He's a rock star!"
Asked if he has a partner himself, Creel said, "I don't -- that's all I'm gonna say. You know how people are like, 'You don't wanna talk about your sexuality.' No. I tell them I'm gay and that's all. My life is pretty simple -- it's not scandalous or interesting. I put my pants on just like everybody else. I'm 32 now and came out to my family seven years ago, when I was in 'Millie,' because I thought, they're coming to opening night of my first Broadway show and it's huge for all of us. Even if they kick me of the house, even if they don't wanna talk about it and ignore me, they're gonna come and cry and see their son up there, hopefully kickin' some ass. And the way they responded was the best, and it's not been easy for them. They're registered Republicans and very conservative. I talk to them about marriage equality and they say, 'We don't agree. It's not right -- you don't have the same rights as us.'
"But then my father is on their church board and someone in the church came out and my father said, 'I just want you to know that I've prayed about it, and if for some reason they don't allow this person to worship with us, I'm going to the board and say, "I respect all your opinions but I'm withdrawing," and I just cried. He's the most incredible man I know. My Grandma -- Guey -- was my idol, just angelic and he is her son, without a doubt."
The role of Claude came to Creel circuitously: "Christina Miller, who played Dion in the park, was a Facebook friend I didn't really know, but she wrote me: 'Jonathan and I were talking and we thought you'd make a brilliant Claude.' I didn't know who she meant and she said, 'Groff,' and I thought, 'That's weird -- why are you telling me this? Well, he's not going to do it.'
"I auditioned on Thursday, got called back Friday, and heard I got it Friday night. It's funny, because I've been pretty lucky, but 2008 was a rough year. I loved doing Bert in 'Mary Poppins' in London, and auditioned for 'Godspell' and got it very quickly. I waited nine months for that, and six days before rehearsals, it was canceled. So all that year -- no income, no health insurance. I called my agent to ask about the availability of 'Mary Poppins,' which I would love to play again. But if I'd taken that, I wouldn't be in this incredible 'Hair.'
"In 2008, my bike got stolen, I invested in the stock market -- everything went to pot, except for Obama and I got a great dog. One of my favorite things to do is teach master classes around the country, and I always tell my students, "You just can't know...'"
General Manager Peter Gelb threw another extravaganza with the Metropolitan Opera 125th Gala, lavish with its use of computer-driven visuals and recreations of historical performances, replete with costumes inspired by the original garb worn by the stars.
I met up beforehand with Natalie Dessay -- who was to sing the First Act arias from "La Traviata" -- in her West Side aerie, decorated with Hirschfeld caricatures. Dressed in black velvet Betsey Johnson and rocker boots -- no "important' gown for this youthful diva -- she was the perfect, easy hostess, despite the pre-performance pressure she was doubtlessly feeling. She made me an espresso and then easily warmed up, while expressing some uncertainty about the gown she was to wear, an enormous hoop-skirted affair inspired by Bidu Sayao (which impeded the abandoned movement she's famous for), a certain nervousness ("I hate concerts!"), and humor, as when, learning that James Levine was to conduct the entire program, I said, "It's an orgy of opera!" ("And then we'll all throw up!").
Dessay is the kind of ultra-rare, menschy opera star who pulls dollars out of her purse before hailing a cab ride to the Met, instead of expecting that the bill will somehow be taken care of (of course she didn't pay, but quel gesture!) And her nervousness was completely unwarranted as, despite thrilling contributions by singers Joseph Calleja, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Renee Fleming, and Placido Domingo (simultaneously celebrating his 40th Met anniversary), there was little doubt as to who stole the show.
Dessay sang and acted with a piercing delicacy which built to an electrifying high E-flat -- the note many say James Levine traditionally bans -- at the end of "Sempre Libera," making you want to immediately book tickets for her first "Traviata," this summer in Santa Fe, directed by the brilliant Laurent Pelly.
Best film I've seen this year is Gianni Di Gregorio's endearing "Mid-August Lunch," screening at New Directors/New Films Festival, Walter Reade Theater, on April 3 and 4 (filmlinc.com/ndnf/ndnf). The tale of a middle-aged guy living in Rome with his aged mother, who finds himself suddenly having to care for three other old ladies as well, is deeply human, hilarious, and a joy in every way.
The New Theatre was a small Off-Broadway space on the East Side (154 E 54th St). It closed in the mid-70s after Oh Coward. That part of New York's east side is different now. Buildings have come and gone including the New Theatre. I wasn't in New York at the time but I wish I was so I could have seen the show. It ran for about 8 months (opening October 04, 1972 and closing June 17, 1973) and then opened in London.
Thanks for the update on DR Vixmom, DR WFO!
I think I was more moved by the Chocolate Rain guy than I am by Susan Boyle.
The only reason I can think of is the current unemployment numbers. Most people in Oregon I meet are happy to be here, maybe because most of them originally lived in California. ;)
It's based on economic factors. Nebraska is the happiest and Iowa is number two
Vibes to Vixmom and all who need them~~~~~~~~~~~
I took Edith to the United Way Women's Power Lunch today. The speaker was Mary Lou Retton. She was funny and very inspiring. I had no idea that she had knee surgery only 6 weeks before she won the gold medal. Her story was great and it was fun to watch a video of her winning the gold
-
I won a prize in the raffle. It was a nice purse full of goodies. What fun
-
Tonight I spent about 2 hours trimming bushes in the yard that were VERY overgrown. Last summer I was working on the murder trial and didn't do any yard work to speak of, other than mowing. Boy! Do I have a lot to do to make up for that. I had gloves on, but wore short sleeves, yikes, my arms are very scratched up
-
I am very sleepy. Time for me to go to bed.
-
Went and did a few errands and whatnot, picked up way too many tapes including four boxes filled with boxes of two-inch sixteen-track session tapes, which I've just made an executive decision not even to look at let alone pull and listen to - I pulled one and looked at the paperwork, and it seems these all contain cues that were used for source music, i.e. stuff on radios and record players. All this stuff was, in fact, on quarter-inch tapes that I returned today - it holds zero interest for me, not even as bonus material, although in this batch of tapes are four half-inch four-track versions of what's on some of these two-inch tapes, so I'll listen to those and see if there's anything worth transferring. But the main program is so good and I'm so about CDs as a listening experience rather than every note of music even if said music was just written to be pad coming from the radio and not even to really be heard (in the film itself, this stuff is dialed so low that it's basically inaudible). On the prepared album master (never issued) there's really terrific music, most of which was not in the film, and there's even some question whether it was intended to be in the film or was more inspired by the film - whatever way it was, it's fantastic music and that's what we'll put out.
-
Of course, since I was in Hollywood, I did stop at House of Pies for another slice of peanut butter pie.
-
Another day read.
Dear Jeanne, welcome back to LA.
Dear George, the fail pics were great, thanks.
Dear Jane, Susan Boyle's story makes perfect sense about small towns, she is a survivor.
I am so proud of myself for being able to finish the rest of the MISSION IMPOSSIBLE episodes tonight. Of course, that meant I had less time to watch prime time TV, but I can catch up with some of that tomorrow.
Some really entertaining episodes in the last bunch but the season finale was a ludicrous episode where Jim gets amnesia after being grazed in the head with a bullet. Of course, his memory comes right back after he talks to Greg Morris' Barney on the phone in the episode's last couple of minutes.
-
Among the guest stars in that last group of episodes: Daniel J. Travanti (who spelled it "Travanty" back then), Geoffrey Lewis, Robert Colbert, Lou Antonio (always have loved him), Jack Cassidy, Bert Convy, Jon Cypher, and Sharon Acker.
-
Luckily for me, there were no bonus features with this set, so once I finished the episodes, I was done with the box set. That should finish my TV box sets for review for the month of April.
-
Tomorrow I'll be working on the next Criterion release, Stephen Frears' THE HIT which I've never seen. Looks like an exciting movie. I'll be looking forward to it.
-
I did have time to watch BONES tonight. The case of the dead rocker didn't interest me all that much, but the on-going story of Dr. Sweets, Booth-Brennan, and the doctor played by Stephen Fry kept me riveted. I loved ALL of those scenes.
-
Fox is SPOILING me giving us two new episodes of BONES this week and two new episodes next week. (Next week, they are on Monday and Thursday).
But I'm not complaining!
-
Another day read, must go eat before it gets too late.
The High Times posts were great, I love modern art , see new stuff all year. It always intrigues me as to what people will come up with.
Be back to read the last 2 days.
-
Page Nine Dance!!!
-
I ended my viewing evening with tonight's 30 ROCK. A rather silly episode, but there were a couple of good laughs.
-
I've had a full day of viewing and will head down now and go to bed.
Good night!
-
David Noh also sells a ton of classic Hollywood stuff on eBay, I've won a ton of FF stuff from him over the years.
-
I gotta tell you.
-
I've been e-mailing mp3s of Nudie stuff to my transcriber and to Adam, the choreographer.
-
Almost done reading the posts. Only today to go.
Dear Daw: thanks for listing everything, I try to take notes but someone always slips by.
Much health and vibes to everyone.
-
Done. All caught up.
Wow, that took me 3 hours.
I wish everyone the best, for health, and happiness, and may dreams come true.
===========================================================
-
Goodnight.
To a happy Friday.
-
Just dropped in to say goodnight
