Well, you've read the notes, the notes worked better than Time Warner, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they've been chewing on some fiber-optic cables.
-
And the word of the day is: MUMPSIMUS!
Smoke on your pipe and put that in.
-
Just as I wrote the final line of today's notes guess what happened - you got it - Time Warner went down again - happily, only for about two minutes.

***CONTINUED RAPID RECOVERY VIBES***
for DR Jane and her DH Keith!!!!

I've been trying to avoid having Time Warner in our new house.
Hopefully, the wait has paid off. It looks like (fingers crossed) we're going to get U-verse tomorrow from AT&T.
I understand that their system is much more reliable than TW.
Last September, when we were in Austin arranging for the purchase of our house, TW was having a battle with NBC and no TW subscriber in Texas could get an NBC show. I think that went on for a couple of months.
-
Comedians?
If a comedian is going to make it to the "top rung," he/she has to be more than just a comic. He/she has to be an all-round entertainer and a pretty good actor, because a comic's schtick gets old after awhile. Perfect example: my late former publicity client, Stanley Myron Handleman, who was very hot during the late 1960s/early 70s, but a few years later, couldn't get arrested. He had one act, and funny as it was, audiences got tired of it.
BTW: I love Ricky Gervais. I watched his HBO Special the other night, and I couldn't stop laughing.

Good morning, all! I am absolutely floored by the sad news of Marilyn Cooper's death. I loved her. I had met, and fell in love with, her on the UNSUNG SONDHEIM album, and I got to spend six weeks with her at Goodspeed doing REDHEAD in 1998. She was a delightful and kind lady. I had recently learned that she was in ahome and it was my intention to visit her. God bless her.
I may have a meeting in Toyland this morning, depending on the health of my colleague Curtis, so I'm waiting to hear his news. I also received the pdf files of the new vocal score to Jerome Moross' GENTLEMEN BE SEATED from the copyist, so I've got another job sitting on the desk. It's nice to be working.
-
I'm sorry to hear about Marilyn Cooper, too. I loved her in WOMAN OF THE YEAR--she was the only saving grace of that particular show. And "At the Movies" is definately one of my favorite tracks on UNSUNG SONDHEIM. I think the only other thing I might have seen her in on stage was BALLROOM
Hmmm...I just looked on IMDB and saw that Marilyn Cooper reprised her role in a televised version of WOMAN OF THE YEAR starring...Barbara Eden? Where was this shown? I have no recall of it at all...
-
There was a guy named Pete Barbuti who had the most bizarre sense of humour around...but it was right up my alley. I used to love him. Druxy, I remember Stanley Myron Handleman...and, yes, he was funny...for about a year.

Surprisingly, there's been some tax-office work with real live deadlines, so there are returns and desk audits to do, but not overwhelming. Also some things where the bosses had asked the client whether they could be put off until after April 15, and now they must be done.

Good morning.
I thought Studio City has been complaining about Time Warner for years, they were Adelphia before that ? (which was also the devil incarnate).
This workie must go.

Two comic actresses I enjoyed a lot and I was sure would make the big time were Robin Bartlett and Valerie Mahaffey. They both made splashes in a variety of supporting roles in sitcoms and dramadies during the 80s and 90s but nowadays pretty much have vanished. THe last time I remember seeing Robin Bartlett was on MAD ABOUT YOU. Valerie Mahaffey did a couple of episodes of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES (I've stopped watching so I don't know if her character ever returned.)

Valerie Mahaffey did stage work in New York in the early 80s. She was in a friend's show at Circle in the Square in 1981 (Scenes and Revelations by Elan Garonzik). Mr. Rich did not much care for it but I still think it's a good piece. She also did an Off-Broadway production of The Butter and Egg Man in 1982 at an old space on Theatre Row (42nd & 9th Avenue near our Dear Fred) that no longer exists, Manhattan Punch Line. She was also in Rex (the Richard Rodgers musical about Henry the 8th) and the Frank Langella production of Dracula.

DR Jane, sorry your condition does not seem to be getting better.
Is the treatment for poison ivy the same as for poison oak?
I have no idea if this is fact. But in my niece's book (which i assume is to educate). The little girl gets poison ivy. And it is miraculously treated with something that grows in gardens called jewelweed. i have never heard of this.
-
A quick rant...
About two years ago, a co-worker/friend and I had just finished reading THE DIVINCI CODE and grumbled about how it was really a badly written book that had a really great hook of an idea behind it. So we began to toss around ideas for a novel that we could write together. The best idea we came up revolved around the idea of vampires being closely linked to events in American history. And that led to our idea about Abraham Lincoln encountering vampires both in his early days as a pioneer farmer and then in Washington DC (Lincoln, btw, was the first Goth--he always wore black, didn't he?)
Well, days ago, my heart pretty much jumped out of my mouth when I read this: Move Over, Jane Austen. Now Lincoln Meets the Vampires (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/14/books/14arts-MOVEOVERJANE_BRF.html?em)
The lesson here: don't sit on a good idea.

Valerie was a University of Texas alumna and a good friend of my friend Jimmy Simpson, who was also a UofT alumnus. My memory of the early 1980s was that she was living with actor Bruce McGill then. The last tiem I saw her, she played the conniving wife of Kier Dullea on a LAW & ORDER: SVU episode. The more important question is where is Jimmy Simpspon?

DR DtM - in the mid-1970s, when we were both young, restless librarians, my friend Becky and I dreamed up a business venture called the Bookery Bakery. It would be a bookstore with a coffee shop attached. Several years later, when we visited one of the first Border's stores in greater Cincinnati and had coffee in the cafe, we realized that we were patronizing our Bookery Bakery.

Wow! I didn't see Mahaffey in DRACULA, but I now realize that I must have seen her in PLAY MEMORY, though I don't have much memory of that play (I probably fell asleep along with the rest of the audience.)
I also see (I'm looking through IBDB) that I might have seen Robin Bartlett in YENTL on B'Way, too.

Very sorry to read about Marilyn Cooper. I, too, saw her in WOMAN OF THE YEAR and adored her number. I liked the show more than many here though it wasn't great. It had a very hard working ensemble. It was just the two leads who were not appropriately cast.

I loved second string funny women like Kathleen Freeman and Reta Shaw. Their timing was so superlative, they could make even straight lines hilarious. Marilyn Cooper had that same kind of timing.

Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And I walked through the Dock Street Theatre this morning. And when I mean "through it", I mean through it since it's currently in the midst of a renovation. Even in its half-completed state, it's quite a wonder, and I'll definitely have to make a trip back to Charleston once it's back to it's "new-found" glory.
-
Right now, I'm back at the office trying to figure out the rest of my day. Since I'm in this part of town, I may head over to Sullivan's Island to finally walk on a beach. Although, since I did run out of the apartment this morning, I know I have to head back there to do some tidying up - as well as to pick up my clothes for tonight's performance.

And while I was dining at FIG last night, I thought I was sitting next to some people I knew either from New York City or L.A., maybe even Chicago. And as I was settling my tab, a man walked in and sat next to me at the bar, and I almost immediately said, "Hi!" since he just looked so familiar. Well...
After talking with Michael, the bartender, and the hostess, it turned out that these familiar faces were members of the cast of "Army Wives", which is on the Lifetime Channel. I guess they were all coming in after a day of shooting.
*If they happen to be back there on Saturday night, I'll be sure to ask for an autograph for DR MBarnum. ;)

And I'm not sure if this has made any of the mainstream news outlets - or even the non-mainstream new outlets - but it seems that the "Gathering Storm" people have requested and "won" that YouTube pull down any of the video parodies of their ad campaign. Additionally, since they are claiming copyright infringement, some YouTube posters are getting their accounts suspended and all their previously posted videos pulled off the site.

I don't think we in Studio City have any choice but Time Warner. I tried to get DSL through AT&T years ago, but we're right on the cusp where the service is too weak to work correctly.

Well, no one can say we didn't get to page three.

I watched Louisiana Hayride, too. I loved Judy Canova and we always watched her movies on TV when we were kids. She sang a couple of great songs last night.....that I had NEVER heard before....my favorite was "You Gotta Go Where the Train Takes You." LOL....
The script certainly showed that it had some radio writers in on it....but I still laughed at the jokes....and Judy's great delivery.
Judy's mother, Minerva Urecal comes out of the house.....the two man approach her:
Man: Good morning, madam. I couldn't help noticing you have a big piazza.
Minerva: What??!!!!
Man: The big stoop out in front of the house.
Minerva: Oh, well, Junior kinda slow, but he's all right.

I remember Stanley Myron Handelman - who did become tiresome. We had a board game called Comedians (I think) where you negotiated contracts for famous comics....he may have been one of them. I do know that Myron Cohen and Sam Levinson were in there.

PET AIRWAYS (http://www.news.com.au/travel/story/0,28318,25369013-5014090,00.html)
New animal-friendly airline Pet Airways launched
A US company has launched the world's first pets-only airline dedicated to animal-friendly travel.
Pet Airways will cater for people who loathe the idea of their pets being stored in the cargo hold area during a flight by offering their pet-only service.
From July the new airline will fly dogs and cats in the main cabin of a turbo-prop Beech 1900 passenger plane which has furnishings such as the seats and bins removed, with animals placed in their private pet carriers and locked into a restraint system.
The plane can hold up to 50 dogs or cats. A pet attendant checks on the animals and makes sure they have regular toilet breaks during the flight.

He was born with an enlarged heart, and now it's on the verge of failure.
He's getting meds & O2. The doctor is giving him a little better than a 50/50 chance. His condition is "guarded".
The bad thing about having pets is that we outive them.
-
Whew! Finally made it to the board. It's been a long week. We are in tech for The King and I this week and it's been great. It's a long show, but it's not boring, just long. The cast is great. Sadly, I made a decision to cut the Overture (blasphemous, I know) and the Entr'acte, not only for time reasons, but because we have 13 players in the pit (for budget and space issues, of course) and it just wasn't working out well. It's such a well orchestrated piece that it would be hard to cut it down. SO, we are playing the first 12 bars and immediately segue-ing to the
"Opening of Act One" music, and it works like a charm.
Tonight is the invited preview, it will be exciting to have people besides the production team see the show and to hear their reactions.

I even went and bought a chain saw, but as soon as I got it home and really looked at what I need to do, I decided I really don't need a chain saw and would probably never use it again so I returned it
-
I quit at 12:30 because it was getting hot and I was tired. It's 91 degrees now. Yikes! I went to a tool sale a friend is having to liquidate her late husband's construction business. I got a circular saw, a couple halogen lights, a 100 ft extension cord and 7 brand new 3 ring binders for a whopping $34 dollars!

My little Norfolk Terrier, Cody, is currently at the vet's, fighting for his life.
He was born with an enlarged heart, and now it's on the verge of failure.
He's getting meds & O2. The doctor is giving him a little better than a 50/50 chance. His condition is "guarded".
The bad thing about having pets is that we outive them.
~~~Vibes for DD Cody!!~~~
Then I stopped by the Schwan's truck. I did get the triple play meatballs that Athena made on Celebrity Apprentice. The funny thing is the big marketing idea on the show was that the noodles were gluten free, there's nothing on the packaging that says they are gluten free, so it looks like the real dish isn't what it was on TV. I didn't get the Asian Chicken.
The lawn sprinkler guy can't tell me where the lines are, they didn't do a map and he has no idea. But, he did find a leak in the main line for the sprinkler and is repairing it. Once it's working I can see where the sprinklers are and then plant my garden so that it will be watered by the automatic system. I'm not in that big a hurry, I can't plant tomatoes etc until the last frost date which is May 10
Cilla you sure are having a productive day :)
Vibes to dear little Cody!!!
He's a cutie.
And I'm not sure if this has made any of the mainstream news outlets - or even the non-mainstream new outlets - but it seems that the "Gathering Storm" people have requested and "won" that YouTube pull down any of the video parodies of their ad campaign. Additionally, since they are claiming copyright infringement, some YouTube posters are getting their accounts suspended and all their previously posted videos pulled off the site.
I'm glad I was able to save the .flv video files. ;)
Vibes for Cody and his dear people!
And according to THIS (http://www.imdb.com/news/ni0757151/), the Doctor Who people want Gillian Anderson to be a villan! ;D
The X-Files star Gillian Anderson is set to return to her sci-fi roots - British TV bosses are lining her up for a cameo role in Doctor Who.
The 40 year old starred alongside David Duchovny in the cult 1990s show and two subsequent movies in 1998 and last year.
TV executives in the U.K. are reportedly keen to sign Anderson for a special one-off episode of hit show Doctor Who - playing a villain to do battle with the Time Lord in the ultimate sci-fi showdown.
A source tells British newspaper the Daily Express, "Gillian obviously has a massive sci-fi following following and it's felt it would be a major coup to have her appear in Doctor Who.
"The team behind the show are keen for the next Doctor to have lots of new enemies and Gillian would be a glamorous and impressive addition to the list.
"It would undoubtedly be regarded as one of those great sci-fi moments if the star of The X-Files gets to clash with the Doctor."
Love the dog pictures, Der Brucer!
I did skim through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Stupid doesn't do this foolishness justice.
I got home just in time to see the psycho-twin knock Lily unconscious and escape. I 'm still chuckling over the violence, and the endless inanity of the rest of the episode.
Going to write for just a bit and then head back down to watch THE EARLY LIFE OF CATHERINE THE GREAT. Then, onward with prime time TV.
WBBL.
Richard and I have just returned from Kenwood Towne Center, where I bought 2 new pairs of ECCO shoes.
I did see Marilyn Cooper in Woman of the Year. I thought she was the best thing in the show. I saw a matinee and thought that star Lauren Bacall was walking through the show. Perhaps saving her energy for the evening performance. The book and the score won a Tony award but it was a weak year in both catagories. I felt it won by default.
But Cooper was the best thing.
I spent the day at UCLA Medical Center. DF&H#2 has a nasty rash that is getting really horrible, so I drove him over there to see the doctor. I must be the Houseguest from Hell. While in Florida, DF&H#1, who's NEVER sick, got sick and ended up in the ER. Now DF&H#2 is ailing. Maybe JRand has an explanation; I don't! :( ???
The store is holding a job fair tomorrow and on Saturday.
I mention it mainly because it was at such a job fair, four years ago, that I joined the Super Giant workforce.
I'm not suggesting that DR DAW come down and apply for a job... for one thing, the commute would be really rough. Sorry.
The store manager has predicted that tomorrow is going to be a mob scene, however, what with the usual seekers for summer employment and the surge of people that have been hit by the economy.
. . .and if anyone hasn't heard it yet, Donald's Radio show with David Pevsner is to die for!
-
Cilla you sure are having a productive day :)
Yes. I am very tired now. It got up to 92 degrees here today so I'm glad I got an early start. Tomorrow will be hot again and then Saturday's high will be 52 and rainy. That will be a shocker
Trying to watch a motion picture on DVD.
I saw WOMAN OF THE YEAR with Lauren Bacall and Marilyn Cooper. I thought it was wonderful. And I was very impressed with how charming and wonderful Ms. Bacall was to my mother and my aunt both before the show and after it was over.
-
This is my first evening off of rehearsal this week. It is also the start of my last free weekend before we start the nightly run-throughs. Starting Monday, the honeymoon is over and I have no more nights off until after we open.
I am sorry, but I am very tired tonight.
I had a full night of filmed entertainment. I began by watching CATHERINE THE GREAT. The DVD case calls it THE RISE OF CATHERINE THE GREAT, but that's not the title on the actual film.
Anyway, I had only seen little bits of this; it was nice to see a different interpretation of the Catherine the Great story, but Von Sternberg's THE SCARLET EMPRESS beats this by a mile. (They both flopped at the box-office). Nice to see Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. actually doing interesting things with a role. Flora Robson made a very interesting Empress Elisabeth. I'm not sure I've ever seen her play sexy before.
-
Next, I rewatched some of this week's IDOL performances one more time before deleting it from the DVR.
-
Up next was tonight's BONES, an above average mystery lifted to a higher plane because of the Japanese agent and his scientist partner who were there assisting. Really enjoyed tonight's episode.
-
GREY'S ANATOMY was next, and it was a very good episode as well. The father-daughter storyline was tremendously moving, and I loved the final scene between Alex and George, too.
-
I concluded my evening with tonight's SUPERNATURAL, an eerie episode called "Jump the Shark" which didn't for the show, a major relief. Great surprise revelation 2/3 of the way through, too. Very good show which has been on a roll of its own lately.
-
While in Westwood we took in Falafel King. My fave falafel is still Aladdin's, which Jose, I'm sure, knows well. I do still love Aladdin's.
I've never been to Aladdin's, maybe one of these days.
;D We went out tonight with out of town friends tonight. For the first time in ages I was able to have my hair looking nice & wear my bangs down instead of pulled off of my face. We had a very nice time.
Did you say nasty rash? Has he been around DR Jane's poison oak?
I'm sure. Have fun & stay healthy vibes!!!
Good Evening!
Just three more performances of The Producers to go. -Although, I wouldn't mind being able to run from tonight's half-hour through the end of "We Can Do It". There just seemed to be a lot of gremlins in the works when we started off tonight. First, the sound board crashed at 7:15... ::)
-
In any case, things settled after "We Can Do It", but since we started off the evening with some technical issues, I really wasn't able to relax until after intermission. Then after the show, I thought I was heading out with some friends who had come to tonight's show, but...
-
I was actually a bit tired after tonight's show, so it worked out better that I did not go out. I did stop by the office on the way back to the apartment to gather the stuff that I had at my desk. I thought I would go ahead and pack it all up tonight, and mail it back tomorrow morning. However, I think I'm just going to pack and mail it all in the morning. Just not feelin' it.
A classmate, high school for Keith & 6th grade on for me, is in Ashland with 4 friends. They came on the bus with an adult class trip which included 2 nights of plays. We picked up our classmate at their hotel & gave her a driving tour of Ashland & then walked her through the park. Later we met the rest of her group for dinner. We had a very nice time.
The restaurant we ate at has a great eggplant sandwich Keith & planned on having. Unfortunately they were out of it. I had the mac & cheese instead. It was very tasty. After dinner we walked them to the theater before coming home.
I am definitely feeling better. Hmmm, might it be the glass of wine ;) I just checked, my finger reach around my wrist again-YES! :) This is encouraging though I still have some swelling.
-
Hope you're sleeping/slept well, DR TCB.
-
DR Jane - Glad to know you're feeling better!
*I just hope that whatever meds you're on, don't react with alcohol. ;)
I've got some writing to do, so I'm hopping off line to get it done.
LOL-I had better skip the Benadryl tonight. Otherwise I'm only using a steroid ointment.
Well... I was thinking of catching a matinee of "The Soloist" tomorrow afternoon, but after reading the review in the LA Times (http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-et-soloist24-2009apr24,0,4718808.story)*, well... -And I've read some of the other reviews, and they all seem to have the same issues with the movie.
*And since "The Soloist" deals with Steve Lopez, a reporter for the LA Times... And since Kenneth Turan knows Steve Lopez, well... It's an interestingly candid review.
Good evening, after reading today's posts;
Thanks for the links everyone, watched and read.
Enjoyed the pics, always.
Dear Jose, the Spoleto poster is great.
BK, the AT&T internet has never been down.
Will have to go back and listen to the radio show and read Pogue's new page.
note for my weekend: Look for Unsung Sondheim in cd rack. (Marilyn Cooper).
Well Vixdad came home eal;ry from work and drove me to the gall bladder surgeon.
Can't put anything in a pipe and smoke it, gave them all to the ex's brother in 2002. There were some really nice hand carved pipes from the 70's I should have kept.
Many health vibes and wishes to all who need them.
Re: topic of the day, I have no sense of humor.
Criminal Minds was really good last night. That I get.
We picked up the Vixter and went out to our local Diner, which we have dubbed "The Diner that Never Gets It Right". We have never been there without one of our orders coming slightly differently than asked for.
For instance the Vixter wanted a burger and fries. Well the Diner includes a bowl of coleslaw, a couple of pickles, onion rings a large portion of lettuce and three thick slices of tomato with that meal - all of which we know and none of which the Vixter will eat. We hate to see the food wated (it is very nice food there - the burger buns are baked there fresh every day) so we always request please JUST the burger and the fries, please do NOT bring anything else, it will just be wasted
But when her meal came lo and behold there were all the trimmings. It was a real shame because of course once it comes out of the kitchne and is served they have to discard it.
I missed many posts today. I will catch up.
I ahd the stuffed mushroom appertizer as my meal tonight- three baby portabella mushrooms overstuffed with crabmeat - and it was nice and crabby , not full of breading.
They were so big I ate just one and brought the other two home to reheat under the broiler tomorrow
I'm listening to this thing, this "cast" album called Sherry - and reading the astonishing booklet notes by James Lipton, who makes this comment - something along the lines of "I do believe this is the first album to ever had a choreographer." Oh? Really? What's that album called Unsung Musicals, produced in 1993 with a CREDIT on its opening track that reads Choreography and Taps by Niki Harris? And I was hardly the first to do it, although I think I was the first to assign a credit like that right on the track listing alongside the singers. But Lipton's ego knows no bounds so I'm sure it makes him happy to think he's the first (or maybe the album's producer told him that - it wouldn't surprise me) - nothing surprises me - not even the fact that a sixty-seven piece orchestra is being used on a theater score - and sounding like a pit band of twenty. This is a show I was going to record and reconstruct with its composer, who'd loved our version of the show's title song - until the original orchestrations were found by the album's producer, and that was that. In the end, I think I did the studio cast album of a flop that I should have - Drat! The Cat! We didn't have an orchestra of sixty-seven, but we did have a theater-sized orchestra that sounded like a million bucks.
-
I put on the final DVD of the Kevin and Sean show and was rather amazed to find a crappy looking transfer and not the latest and final cut and the nice sound mix that I approved sounding harsh and ugly and distorted. I think you can imagine the sort of e-mail I sent out - our editor is really going to have to explain to me how this happened. It's not what we did the commentary track to, and when we heard the mix in the bay two nights ago, it sounded great. One problem is that he burned our DVDs in his computer, which means he probably did Quick Time - but regardless of that, I was not seeing the color-corrected up-rezzed video and I just don't get it. I told the editor (in an e-mail and voice mail) that we had to resolve this tomorrow - Kevin sent him a strong e-mail, too, and unfortunately sent along the e-mail I'D sent Kevin, which was much stronger even than my e-mail to the editor. I don't care, though, because this is amateursville and I have every right to react strongly.
Hmmm - methinks there may be more to this story......
Not really. I've just been wanting to get back to Chicago for a visit. And I just happened to be chatting with some friends from college this past week who are now living in Chicago... And with A Chorus Line, Mary Poppins and Jersey Boys in town... And Curtains running at the Drury Lane Oakbrook... Well... We'll see...
-
OK... I believe I'm officially sleepy.
Goodnight.
Goodnight Jose, sleep well!
I then took out our recording of the Sherry title song - wow. elmore's orchestration is so great and so much better than the original - and, much as I love Mr. Lane and Miss Burnett, they don't hold a candle to the energy and delight of Jonathan Freeman and Christine Baranski - I laughed out loud as I listened - hadn't heard the track in years. And then I listened to the opening track, Smile, you know, the one with choreography and taps done ten years before Mr. Lipton and I just loved hearing it - such energy, such a terrific elmore orchestration, such a great Harry Groener vocal - and oh those Niki Harris taps. And I was actually shocked by how good it sounded - that was still pretty early in our recording life, Vinnie and me, but I didn't hear anything I would change and the band sounds fantastic. The only disappointment on that CD, mix-wise, is Disneyland (elmore can tell you the horrifying story of THAT), and it's something I rectified when I did On My Own with Michelle Nicastro - it's a hidden track on there, and the mix is so much better.
BK, I remember when the Sherry studio cast recording was released, I liked it but I didn't love it. And I didn't like the Lane/Burnett version of the title song as much as I loved your Freeman/Baranski version. That was a lot funnier...in my humble opinion. :)
Well, I need to do the Page Eight Wussburger Dance!! I went to bed last night and I just couldn't get to sleep! I don't think that I slept more than three hours. :P So, now I need to sleep.
