Well, you've read the notes, you didn't squeeze the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - that's a some spicy meatball - that's the cow's favorite commercial.
-
And the word of the day is: MYRMECOLOGY!
-
BK, your commercial history is very interesting. I've always thought that it would be cool to be an actor in commercial. Never having been in that situation of course, I have no idea of the reality of it all.
-
Has anyone seen THIS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTXsikZv0Ks) commercial for Dex phone books? The actor playing the son has also been in a Progressive Insurance commercial and another commercial where he's holding a baby, and he was on a few episodes of a TV series where he had a speech impediment (for comedic effect) but I don't remember what the show was. Anyway, I think he looks like a very young BK! Does anyone else think so?
-
I just remembered the TV show that he was on! It was "The Big Bang Theory" and the actor is John Ross Bowie (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0101152/)...and he's about 10 years older than I thought he was! I didn't realize that he's going to be 38 years old this month. He does not look it. ;) And in his IMDb listing, someone posted this link to the Turbo Tax (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VU-DjbXyItA) commercial that he did...the commercial where he's holding a baby.
Now, I can sleep. ;D
-
I think he looks like a very young BK! Does anyone else think so?
He does seem to have a "bk-ish" quality! :)

Today's notes were fascinating, bk!

DR vixmom - thank you. I think my only appearances on YouTube involve a lampshade.

It's drizzling and cool. The weather for Mr. BK's arrival does not look pretty.

UP WITH THE LARK
A Wonderful Jerome Kern Melody
Outside of Walter Brennan singing this song in the Movie Centennial Summer does anyone out there know if the song was ever recorded with The Lyrics.?? Bill Evans and Barbara Carroll recorded the song as an instrumental. Jonathan Schwartz, who is pretty good at recalling the history of songs does not believe so. But this Board is so brilliant with questions like this. Any Answers?

Thanks, DR DAW.

Monday morning greetings! We had a busy day in greater Cincinnati yesterday, starting with church. After the service there was a short meeting that ran too long, then Richard and I headed to northern Kentucky to tend to some details regarding Saturday's ceremony in which he will become a deacon and the surrounding festivities. We then drove out to look at the piece of property that was discussed at the "short" meeting, stopped at the grocery store, and arrived home about 6:15 just as Rob and Mary Linda were arriving from their weekend at her family's home in Michigan. We fed them some pizza and Rob & Richard moved the china cabinet from one end of the dining room to the other.

Good morning, all! Sorry, DR George, I don't see it. My last memory of seeing BK in a commercial is him sitting in the drivers' seat of a new car. Mid-1980s, maybe?
First thing today, the barber, then the psot office, Penn Station to pick up my Amtrak tickets for DC tomorrow, then Toyland, and back here for soem work. I leave tomorrow morning for DC and I do not want to wait in a long line for the train ticket while I'm wondering if I will miss the train. My barber is in Rockefeller Center, so I'll run down to the post office there and send off the Moross corrections. head over to Pen Station and wait in line, then walk the seven blocks to Toyland.
Weird dreams last night, one about bed bugs, and one about being lost in the DC Metro system.
-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And I have a little under 12 hours left in Chicago... And even if I spent the next 12 hours sitting in the Corner Bakery, having breakfast (then lunch, then dinner), taking advantage of the free WiFi (like I am now), I would still have had a wonderful time here in Chicago.
-
DR TCB - On the loss of your role model and mentor... {{{{{TOM}}}}} And, just remember, now he'll be watching over you. And probably always has in one way or another.

A clarification from yesterday:
"Monkey" is just "Monkey". Just like "Cher" is "Cher, and "Madonna" is "Madonna". ;)
-
DR ArnoldMBrockman - When you asked, "And what is his name?", I guess I was reading a bit more into your question than you had intended. -Or something like that.
The past few days in Chicago - coupled with my time in Charleston - have been very inspiring, motivating and renewing. There have been some wonderful moments over the past couple of days which have reminded me, "Jose", what I have been, what I am, and what I could be and should be.
So many possibilities.
-
As for the Topic of the Day...
The only that comes to my mind right now is...
"Where's the beef?"
-
OH!!! and...
"I've fallen, and I can't get up!"
;)

I know it's considered by some cynics to be a cheesy song, but a song that does come to mind and have resonance at times in my life when I feel I've gotten in touch with myself is that song sung by "Charlene":
I've been to paradise
But I've never been to me

And Thank You.

So, I have about 12 hours left here in Chicago. I actually think I'm going to head back to Millenium Park for a bit, and take some more pictures around "The Bean". And since the Art Institute is open today - I thought it was closed on Mondays - I may even head back there and check out the couple of galleries I did not get to on Friday.
Otherwise, I just sort of plan to wander around for the day, and it looks like it's going to be another beautiful day weather-wise! -I really did luck out this weekend, considering they had two weeks straight of gray and rain right before I arrived. (And I missed the rain yesterday in NYC. ;) )
I rode in with my friend, David - he has to be in the office by 7:45 - and we'll be heading out for one more dinner before he drops me off at Chicago's Union Station for my train ride back home tonight. The Lake Shore Limited leaves at 9:00pm, and I'll be back in NYC sometime tomorrow afternoon. -And, again, I really do wish that most of the trip along the Great Lakes took place during the day - I'm sure the scenery would be stunning if I could see it. However, the trip back down the Hudson should be nice too.
-
DR Michael S - So, were you hoping to link to that video clip to DR elmore's website?

DR DAW - Have a wonderful time at Merkin Concert Hall tonight.

Oh what a crazy night on THE AMAZING RACE last night!
SPOILERS
SPOILERS
SPOILERS

one two three four five six seven eight nine ten eleven twelve thirteen fourteen
OMG. What a fabulous ending! OMG!!!! My favorite team are the cheerleaders.
\So i was feeling pretty glum near the end. Although i had my fingers crosssed.
I just couldn't understand them last night! They had bad luck and made some
stupid mistakes. But first off, how is it that they (redheads) came to phil first
(at the beginning of the show) and yet the black sisters (who must have
taken much longer swimming) showed up at the first task ahead of them. Was
the swimming task edited to make it seem like the sisters had more trouble
than they did. I just figure it must have been 1-2 hours at the very least that
it took them. Some of the problems the cheerleaders had were not their fault.
But one area where i could not believe it was when they were all dressed up
in opera costumes. Why did they separate from the others??? That was a
stupid mistake. If you are having troubles stick with the pack. If they had
stayed with luke and margie they would have passed the sisters.
I feel bad that the sisters lost because one had to pee. Although i'm not
quite sure why she just didn't squat and do it on the ground. It is for
$1M. What a great ending though. I love that phil was not in an easy place
to find. And i loved that one of jamie and cara ate down that food so quickly.
I know they are showing them sometimes to be a bit impatient. But i'm sure
it must be horrific when the taxis won't take you (even if they are empty).
And that they don't give you any acknowledgement once you are in there.
I'm curious what people think of tammy and victor. To me they are showing
them lately as if they are spoiled rich kids. It bugged me that they chose a
chinese team fluent in chinese when the whole last episodes were in china.
Having them just repeat the order was so unfair. I can't quite figure it out
(why they had that as a task).one two three four five six seven eight nine ten

This is exactly the final i want. Although i was surprised that joan came back. I
really did not think she was coming back. BUt why did they let clint be PM. He really
does not listen. He is the worst leader ever. He doesn't consider anyone else's
opinion if he does not agree with it. To me they should have had jesse james as
PM. ANd let clint be in charge of the song. But joan was right. the song needed to
be faster. But of course clint did not listen. BUt still his song was better than
annie's. I totally get why she is in the finals. That was a no brainer. And i would
have gotten rid of brande too. I was not sure between jesse and joan rivers.
I wanted them to pick joan. But i think jesse is very good. I think he just wasn't
trying hard enough in so many tasks. I"m surprised trump just didn't say, "well
everyone wants to see a joan/annie final so jesse you're fired!. Should be
very interesting next week.one two three four five six seven eight nine ten

I am really looking forward to the 2 hours of MEDIUM tonight.
Is it the finale?
-
Good morning!
The forecast today was for rain off and on all day, but it has not come to pass. In fact, it couldn't be more beautiful. I have the window open and the attic fan pulling cool air into the office. It's just lovely. I see nothing that resembles rain clouds of any kind.
-
I am really looking forward to the 2 hours of MEDIUM tonight.
Is it the finale?
Nope. The two hours tonight are actually two hours of a three hour story arc, so this story won't actually be concluded until next week.
-
On TV TOnight!™
NBC - DEAL OR NO DEAL, MEDIUM (two hours)
ABC - DANCING WITH THE STARS (two hours), CASTLE
CBS - comedies, CSI: MIAMI
FOX - HOUSE, '24'
CW - GOSSIP GIRL, ONE TREE HILL
-
On the work front, I'm not quite sure what I'll be up to today. I have THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE on Criterion, but it doesn't street until the 19th. I'm still awaiting BRIDE WARS and BIG on Fox Blu-ray, but who knows when they'll get here?
I may just not watch anything for work if the Fox BDs haven't arrived when I get in from lunch.
-
This will be one of the few nights where I don't watch MEDIUM on its broadcast night. Since it's two hours and '24' comes on opposite, I'll likely start watching '24' around 9:30 and then pick up CASTLE around 10:15 until 11. I'll get to MEDIUM tomorrow.
With no CHUCK or HEROES, it simplifies my Monday viewing tremendously.
-
I liked the "pitch people" like Nancy Walker, Jan Miner, Jesse White, Speedy AlkaSeltzer, etc. They become like family members.

Charles Pogue & all DR's who might be able to help, I received the following request from Keith's cousin regarding play suggestions in London.
"I wanted to see if you and/or your theatre friends from NY had any recommendations for theatre/musical while we are in London. We are there the week before Memorial Day. We've seen a lot of the usual suspects from NY or years past, but there are some new musicals like Priscilla Queen of the Desert and Calendar Girls. Do you know anything? I'm also interested in plays? If you have any suggestions we'd appreciate them."

We've Only Just Begun was one of my faves, as was Clearosil's It Won't Hurt To Try It - both became pop songs, although the former became a standard while no one but me remembers the latter. Several people recorded the latter, though, including my pal Michael Burns, and, wait for it, Jim Nabors.

TOD - The commercials for Hershey's Kisses in which the kisses are figure skating to "The Skater's Waltz" in one and ringing handbells to "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" in the other. The people who designed those put in a lot of detail that made them true to the activities represented.
Also, there was a radio commercial in 1972-73 for United Airlines that started out with a rehearsal piano and a guy's tired voice saying, "OK, girls, we're gonna tap our little hearts out for United Airlines." Then the voice over with the piano and tapping and singing underneath. At the end, the tired guy says, "Higher, girls, higher." And they sing, "Uni-ted Air-lines," an octave higher. I'd time my drive to grad school just to be able to hear that on WJR, Detroit. I think they also had a TV version that wasn't as funny.

I guess we'll see. My morning paper had the same thing as yours (DWTS for 2 hours). But when i checked abc.com they had DWTS for only 1hr 1/2 (it's changed now). It seems odd with only 4 contestants left that they would move to 2 hours. Maybe the sitcom was getting bad ratings? Maybe they want to try to boost CASTLE's ratings??

But...have you seen a man dancing with his wife....having the time, the time of his life...?
Actually, I did. Last night, in fact.
Was it on State Street, that great street, where they do things they don't do on Broadway?

I've read in another forum that NBC has renewed CHUCK and MEDIUM (plus LAW AND ORDER and SOUTHLAND).
I posted yesterday that it looked like CHUCK and MEDIUM would be renewed today.
But I don't believe that has happened yet.

I've read in another forum that NBC has renewed CHUCK and MEDIUM (plus LAW AND ORDER and SOUTHLAND). This has probably already been noted here, but it was "new" to me.
That is NOT what VARIETY posted earlier today. They said that no definite decision had yet been made in regard to CHUCK, LAW & ORDER, MEDIUM, or MY NAME IS EARL though they did think LAW & ORDER would likely get a half season pickup and MEDIUM was probably going to happen once they determined how many episodes they'd need.
NBC is committed to six new shows next season (not counting Jay Leno's new 10 p.m. variety hour M-F). That doesn't leave a lot of room on their schedule for all of those shows when one figures in the shows alreadyrenewed..
Now, that was a 11 a.m. It could have changed since I last read the report. After I leave HHW in a bit, I'll go back to VARIETY and see if there are any updates.

Tonight's ratings will be very imporatnt for CASTLE. It will have the DANCING WITH THE STARS lead-in, so if it can make a decent showing with that large an audience, ABC may bump it up for another season. If the ratings are mediocre tonight, I fear it's a goner.
-
I decided I would take the day off, and it was a good decision since I didn't get any Blu-rays in the UPS delivery. (At least not yet. UPS has been known to be as late as 6:30).

I watched last night's THE TUDORS when I got in from lunch. I enjoyed the show like always. A lot of these characters I'm not certain about in Henry's history, so much of this (if it's based on fact) is new to me. Nice not knowing ahead of time what is going to happen.
-
Then I continued with LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME that I started last night. I watched up through "I'll Never Stop Loving You," one of the most beautiful ballads Doris Day ever sang. How tragic that it was pitted against "Love Is a Many Splendored Thing" at the Oscars.
-
Then I skimmed through today's AS THE WORLD TURNS. Nothing of interest, but the boys are on tomorrow.

I always loved the Alka-Seltzer "No matter what shape your stomach's in..." commercials.
I don't remember those commercials at all. The Alka-Seltzer commercials that everyone seemed to think were so hilarious were the "I CAN'T BELIEVE I ATE THE WHOLE THING" commercials. I mean I thought they were amusing, but not as hilarious as everyone else in my neighborhood did.

What about commercials that would be considered terribly politically incorrect by today's standards? The one that springs to mind is for Calgon water softener with the Caucasian customer asking the Chinese dry cleaners owner how he gets the clothes so clean, and his response is, "ancient Chinese secret." I don't think that would make it on the air today.

Tonight we are working on fight choreography with Fred and Lilli, singing "Bianca" and seeing the choreography for "Too Darn Hot" - which I have a feeling will look very much like a dance recital with a few pole dancers and strippers thrown in.....I hope I am wrong.....

I had really changed my mind about the team I wanted to support in TAR until they showed the preview for next week. Victor & Tammy have really run a good race, but Margie & Luke have overcome his handicap to get a lot further than they might have.
I guess I will root for Margie & Luke, because the teams spent so much time in China (where Victor and Tammy knew the language) - that it was ALMOST an unfair advantage.

Latest from my 80 something church going widder-lady friend in CA:
A man is driving down a deserted stretch of highway when he notices a sign out of the corner of his eye....It reads:
SISTERS OF ST. FRANCIS
HOUSE OF PROSTITUTION
10 MILES
He thinks this is a figment of his imagination and drives on without second thought....
Soon he sees another sign which reads:
SISTERS OF ST. FRANCIS
HOUSE OF PROSTITUTION
5 MILES
Suddenly he begins to realize that these signs are for real and drives past a third sign saying:
SISTERS OF ST. FRANCIS
HOUSE OF PROSTITUTION
NEXT RIGHT
His curiosity gets the best of him and he pulls into the drive. On the far side of the parking lot is a stone building with a small sign next to the door reading:
SISTERS OF ST. FRANCIS
He climbs the steps and rings the bell. The door is answered by a nun in a long black habit who asks, 'What may we do for you ! my son? '
He answers, 'I saw your signs along the highway and was interested in possibly doing business....'
'Very well my son. Please follow me.' He is led through many winding passages and is soon quite disoriented. The nun stops at a closed door and tells the man, 'Please knock on this door.'
He does so and another nun in a long habit, holding a tin cup answers the door... This nun instructs, 'Please place $100 in the cup then go through the large wooden door at the end of the hallway.'
He puts $100 in the cup, eagerly trots down the hall and slips through the door pulling it shut behind him.
The door locks, and he finds himself back in the parking lot facing another sign:
GO IN PEACE.
YOU HAVE JUST BEEN SCREWED BY THE SISTERS OF ST. FRANCIS.

Quick note about two commercials that I did.
One was for a restaurant. I was a father, two kids and a wife. I got a by out as I thought it was a short run. It ran for over two years!!
It did cause some problems for me in a weird way.
I was student teaching around the same time and all the students wanted to know was about was the commercial and my family.
I finally got fed up and told them my family was killed in a car accident. That put an end to that.
Another commercial I did I have never seen as it only appeared in the UK.
I did a one scene bit in a film that Bob Hoskins was directing and starring in. I guess I did well because he asked for me to work in the commercial. I have no recollection what happened in the commercial other than it was for British Telecom.
And the movie? As far as I know it was never released to the theaters. And I don't know if I made the final cut.
-

Oh what a crazy night on THE AMAZING RACE last night!

one two three four five six seven eight nine ten eleven twelve thirteen fourteen

Should be

Has anyone seen THIS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTXsikZv0Ks) commercial for Dex phone books? And this just in: Chef Mike Lata of FIG in Charleston, SC, won one of the regional Best Chefs awards at tonight's James Beard Foundation Awards!!!
*I'm really glad I got in when I did, since I have a feeling a reservation is going to be a little harder to get now. -And they're being featured in this month's "Gourmet" magazine too.
-
Of course Sherlock was with me.
What a great shot! He looks really big!
Thanks. People say he is big. We don't think so when we compare him to a Newfoundland, St. Bernard or Mastiff. When he is sleeping on top of us, yes he is BIG ;D
I had a toy poodle....he looks big to me :)
-
George, the answer is yes, but that was 18 years ago. So I figured it was OK. If someone didn't want anyone to know, they went to the "by invite only" meetings in the Hollywood Hills. Sorry, I can delete.
I really didn't mean anything by it. And I would think that 18 years is enough time for anyone to not worry about it. :)
-
Time to head home and an evening full of TV watching!
Until later!
-
Growing up we had toy miniature poodles, a bit more reasonable in size ;)
-
I really, really think it would be a good idea if all of the posts that mention who was at an AA meeting were deleted.
Whether it was eighteen years ago or eighteen minutes ago, A is A.
-
I did what DR Sam did & removed the name-very clever DR Sam :)
-
When I checked IMDB after thinking Bowie was pretty funny on BIG BANG THEORY, I was also a bit non plussed to discover his advanced age.
-
Watching THE BIG CLOCK on TCM......Ray Milland and Charles Laughton. Following it will be CRIME & PUNISHMENT with Mr Peter Lorre which I have never seen.
TODAY I went for a walk and while at the local WalMart, I got sidetracked into the electronics department. I am not completely happy with my PHILIPS up convert DVD player....so I was looking around.
A lo and behold.....there was a very nice MAGNAVOX up convert DVD player with a few bells - but no whistles - for the walk away price of $37.95. I bought one, and it is working fine. I put my PHILIPS model on my mother's television - she didn't have one, so it's better than nothing.
And I shall explore some DVD's in Magnavox-vision later tonight. I think I shall watch THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL.
Is MR BK conducting auditions in NYC this week? I think my friend Keith sent him an email.....
-
Yes, DR JANE I also loved the new picture of Mr Sherlock.
-
Time to get rid of my slightly too big slippers. I was playing with Boo tonight and tried to run up the two steps out of my livingroom and fell down hard. I didn't hurt myself but either accidentally kicked Boo or scared her very badly. It took a good 20 - 30 minutes before she would even come close to me. She just jumped off my lap after sitting and purring for awhile so all is right with the world, but it was the slippers that made me fall. So, time to go buy some that fit

Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce. cheese, pickles. onions on a sesame seed bun
This commercial was the bane of my existence. The year this was so popular, the prompt on the end of year writing test was to describe their favorite meal. Need I tell you have many one sentence paragraphs were turned in with this commercial as their writing sample?
-
When I went back down, I finished LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME. Always love that movie and never tire of watching it.
-
I'm hoping my new glasses will be in tomorrow. They should have already been in...hmmm... I'll have to call in the morning.
-
Next I watched ALONG CAME A SPIDER. I hadn't watched this in many years and had forgotten almost all of it. Really loved the twists in this mystery.
-
After that I watched the first hour of WITNESS OF THE PROSECUTION. I'll likely finish it tomorrow.
-
'24' had another really wonderful episode. With the season finale coming up soon, things are really jumpin'.
-
And I concluded my evening with tonight's CASTLE.
The ever-hunky and gorgeous Bailey Chase was the primary guest star. I'd love to see more of him on this show, but I guess he's busy half the season with SAVING GRACE.
-
Well, once again, my eyes are getting very heavy, so I think I'll head down to bed.
Good night!
-
I've been watching episodes of Peyton Place. Believe it or not, I'd never seen the show before - very enjoyable - corny, but fun.
-
Interesting interview on Leno: Seems that Anderson Cooper fast-forwards through Paula Abdul on American Idol because she goes on too long and he doesn't know what she's saying half the ime
-
I guess it was actually intersting that Anderson Cooper even watches American idol.
-
Good Evening
Today I went to work. I came home at 3:30 and took a littel doze on the recliner
Then I made meatloaf for dinner which Vixdad was quite pleased to discover when he came in on this very grey and rainy day

TOD
The Alka Seltzer Spicy meatball commercial

Bk's story about the milk commercial immediately made me think of it!
-
and now I must go to bed
good night all!

When I went back down, I finished LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME. Always love that movie and never tire of watching it.
Percy Faith's only Oscar nomination.
-
We had our first Ensemble vocal rehearsal tonight. My usual route home was closed due to yet another downed tree. It was kind of spooky because I had just been discussing the hurricane with a cast member and how I had been very aware of all the big trees on my route to the theater.
-
Apparently our host was migrating all clients to a new server so they took us offline for fifteen minutes - I wonder if it ever occurs to anyone that letting people know this is going to happen and when would alleviate all sorts of tension and bad feelings.
-
Done
-
Notes are written (they're short, after today's loooong notes). I'm also going to announce the new release for pre preorder first thing in the morning - normally I'd wait another day or two, but the NY trip precludes that, and when this thing is officially announced next Monday I am here to tell you it's going to go VERY fast.
-
Announce it when you put up the new notes. That's "first thing", isn't it?
-
Yep, that's when it's going up.
-
Of course Sherlock was with me.

Is that anything like Jose's toy monkey?
-
I'll give you a clew - it's an Academy Award-winning score.
-
I've been watching episodes of Peyton Place. Believe it or not, I'd never seen the show before - very enjoyable - corny, but fun.
And don't they look so YOUNG!!! Farrow, O'Neal, Connelly, Parkins.
-
is this a release after House of Flowers, or did I miss something ?
-
Yes, it's the release that follows House Of Flowers.
-
And that release will be followed by another two weeks later - and it's another instant sellout.
-
Is it by Michel Legrand, this "Academy-Award-winnning score"?
Dave Grusin?
Or, finally after all these years, Bill Conti?
-
And that release will be followed by another two weeks later - and it's another instant sellout.
I'd better not spend all my money on a new skylight for my bedroom. :D
-
I better have credit on my credit card.
Guess I'll stay up till midnight.
Be back.
-

Guess I'll stay up till midnight.
Be back.
I don't have a credit card...anymore.
-
I want a skylight.
-
It is not Legrand (but Legrand will be with us a few releases down the line), nor Conti, nor Grusin.
-
I have two skylights in the same room. I occasionally look up and see an aeroplane flying by.
-
I shouldn't have any either. I was deeply in trouble with them in my 20's. After everything was paid off, I was good for about 15 years. Now they bail me out mostly on car repairs.
-

Hmmmmmm....licensed through MGM?
-
I have a skylight, but I want a new one...one that opens to let out the heat during the summer, but also has a screen so that birds and other assorted animals can't get in. :P
-
I'll come back in 30 minutes. Must take care of my teeth right now, or I'll be charging $800.00 for a new tooth.
-
I've got it.
John Addison. 1963!!!
-
I have a skylight, but I want a new one...one that opens to let out the heat during the summer, but also has a screen so that birds and other assorted animals can't get in. :P
That's the ideal!!!
-
Cannot hold my eyes open any longer.
Will place my order first thing upon arrival at work.
-
A very good year and a very good composer. Isn't it funny that there's never been a complete CD release of this title? Back in 1986 half the score was released on a CD that went out of print immediately. Our presentation should make people very happy.
-
Or before I go to work.

It is funny. Very strange. But... I'm amazed Ryko never got around to it, especially given what that label did release.

Notes in five count them five minutes.
