Well, you've read the notes, the notes were tony and took their time, and now it is time for you to post until the tony cows come home.

In the late morning, I have to go back to my sister's and help her with her new house.  We didn't set up the entertainment center like I thought we would, so it'll have to be done today.  I told her that it's my one night off AND the Tony Awards are being broadcast TONIGHT, so I MUST leave by 4:30 or 5:00.  I need my "me" time. ;) I also need to work more on getting my computer set up.  I have some downloaded programs that I'd like to install in my new computer (including my printer) and I may need some help with those.  We'll see.

I had dreams last night:

First, I dreamed that DR George and I were grocery shopping together.

Then, I dreamed that I was driving Jon Stewart to some sort of party.

Is anyone else watching the BBC series "Beautiful People" on LOGO?  Delightful episode this week concerning tween wannabe stage stars, with a very insteresting medley montage of numbers from musicals.

TONY COVERAGE

For those in NY, you can catch the red/carpet pre-show on NY1 from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM EDT.  For the most of us who don't get that cable channel, you can still hear the audio on www.ny1.com.

www.TonyAwards.com will be webcasting the pre-CBS awards from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM EDT, and will also have a red carpet show starting at 6:30 PM EDT - this may be the same coverage as with NY1.

CBS will be carrying the televised awards from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM, EDT.

I stopped watching the Tony awards sometime ago. They stopped being fun when they moved to Radio City.

They use to have themes ever year. One was a tribute to all the musicals that played the Majestic (or was it the Imperial) and it was broadcast from that theater.

Or the year they played tribute to Sondheim, Herman and Kander/Ebb all in one show.

And the 25 years of the Tonys and 50 years of the Tonys where practically every Tony winner was there.

And the talent that was there! So many are gone now. What about the year of the Damn Yankees revival where they paid tribute to Mr. Abbott. And at the end of the Damn Yankees they brought out Mr. Abbott (100+ years old), Gwen Verdon and Jean Stapleton

I think the glory days of the Tony Awards are gone

Good morning, all! I have to be at Toyland in an hour. After the meeting, I shall return, putter around the apartment, maybe even finish my critical notes th the Appendix material, send in my invoice and wait for payment.

Tonight, I am going to see a new gay men's chorus in performance with guest artist Malcolm Gets. I'm hop[ing the concert won't go on too long since I supose I should care some about the Tonys. I did come to New York to work in the theatre, although I believe the NY theatre has pretty much excluded me. I do so want to hear, though, those new GUYS AND DOLLS orchestrations so I hope I'm back in time to see that sequence.

DR Sam, I forgot last night and apologize!

Well, I stick with the Tonys through thick and thin. Even years when I wasn't enthusiastic about the shows up for awards (like last year), I was still not going to miss it. Gives me always a taste of Broadway, and I have such a long history with coming to NYC specifically to see shows, it's just a part of me.

The Tonys are going to be in high definition for the first time ever this year, so I am greatly thrilled about that!

BK, if you haven't upgraded your dish service to HD, find some old rabbit ears you can attach to your new TV, get the digital tuner in your new set to seek out your local HD stations, and watch the Tonys in HD this year.

My work project today is the Blu-ray of MORNING LIGHT, a Disney-produced documentary of a 2,500 mile sailing expedition. It's only 98 minutes, and there are only a couple of bonus features, so I hope to be able to get this all finished before the Tonys on the net at 7 p.m.

There was a very nice Tony Award concert presented by one of the New York channels - it was shot at the Hudson Theater and featured the performers in street clothes performing numbers from their shows.  It was quite a good show.  Carole Shelley practically stole the show singing her song from BILLY ELLIOT.  The gals from GUYS AND DOLLS were quite weak.  Matt Cavenaugh looked good.  If you haven't seen it, I suggest tracking it down somewhere.

DR Michael S - Even though you may not watch The Tony's, you might as well turn on your TV, and turn to CBS tonight.  At least for the ratings point.  ;)

Seriously, if people just stop watching The Tony's, then it's foreseeable that they will just stop broadcasting them.  -Which has almost happened a few times over the past couple of years. Watch the ceremony, then write a constructive and supportive letter to CBS and the American Theatre Wing.

And, yes, the "themes" were fun, but when it comes down to it, it's all about who gets honored with the statuette.

I understood why they made the move to Radio City, but I think the show suffered mightily for it - and since the show gets bad ratings year in and year out, they might as well have left it alone.  I miss the days when it didn't "look" like the Oscars and every other pumped up awards show - the days when it retained a modicum of class.  But I wouldn't think of missing the show.

DR elmore - Did a gay men's chorus really schedule a concert on the same night as that Tony Awards?

;)

*According the tweets from rehearsal, Guys & Dolls will be performing around the one hour mark.

I never miss a chance to laugh or groan at the work of my favorite orchestrator!

I just cannot get with Twitter.  I don't want to post minute by minute updates and now that I think about it didn't Twitter just rip that idea off by attending our Academy Awards Do, where exactly that happens here at haineshisway.com :)

I had lunch.  I went to the toilet.  I'm driving to Burbank.  I mean, who gives a crap.

How do all these people who post on these boards attend the rehearsals?  I'm sure these "today" producers do it because they know they'll immediately go post on the boards, but I find it a little weird that just anyone can apparently walk in and watch.

Dear MattH, the fundraiser I'm going to next weekend has conversations with the writers of The Closer.
(this is for the same show above, Bleeding Through)

I'm very envious. These writers compose stories that stand the test of multiple viewings and need to be congratulated. I have watched every episode at least a half dozen times and some of them many, many more.
Title: Re: TONY TIME
Post by: Matt H. on June 07, 2009, 01:19:34 PM
I really can't predict Tonys. I haven't seen the shows or read enough about the feelings of the Broadway community about who's nominated. The Oscars are much easier to predict than the Tonys.

I know who I WANT to win, but that's a different matter all together.

I began by watching THE FASHION SHOW while I ate lunch. Once again, I disagreed violently with whom they eliminated. I also disagreed with this week's winning design. So, I guess the show was a very frustrating experience for me this week.
Title: Re: TONY TIME
Post by: Matt H. on June 07, 2009, 01:23:18 PM
Then I watched MORNING LIGHT. It's an OK documentary about the TransPac race from California to Diamond Head with a crew of 18-23 year old helming a boat of their own against vastly more experienced crews. The doc didn't quite delve enough into the personalities of the 11 crew members. A couple got much more attention than others, and instead of feeling like I knew them when the movie ended, they were just some names and faces and some I couldn't even recall their names.

So, it was OK but nothing special.
Title: Re: TONY TIME
Post by: Matt H. on June 07, 2009, 01:25:25 PM
There were two bonus features on the Blu-ray. The first was some behind-the-scenes information about the training the kids got before the race began.

The second was a bit more revelatory. The crew was originally culled from a contest pitting 30 young people against each other for these positions. (The movie begins when the 30 had been narrowed down to 15 and from them 11 were chosen for the final crew.) This was an ESPN one hour show that showed the decision making behind who got picked and who was jettisoned.

At 7pm the red carpet part was going over. I wasn't sure if i was watching a bit behind. So i clicked on the link that was just for the awards. And all i got was a big black screen with white circle. I know you guys said the Red carpet part went over. But even after 7:20pm there was nothing at that link. I wonder if others had that same problem.

My sis said she tried at her house and got the same thing. I went back to the other link and it came on. But they were going so fast it was hard to follow.

Looking forward to the CBS part. Although my sis just called and said my niece has a fever. And since she has spent all weekend with me and slept in my bed i hope it's not contagious!

She was so active all day. But then later she got tired. And we thought it was because she got up at 6am.

DR elmore - I did go to to MoMA today, and I was able to take a gander at Stage Pictures: Drawing for Performance (http://moma.org/visit/calendar/exhibitions/864)

"Visual artists have long been interested in the stage as an arena for experimentation, and their interdisciplinary collaborations have immeasurably enriched the history of modern art. Stage Pictures presents a selection of designs for dance, theater, and opera from MoMA's drawings collection. The exhibition highlights set and costume studies, as well as more abstract suggestions of light and mood, spanning a century of visual experimentation on the stage—from the total theaters of the Ballets Russes and the Bauhaus, to Lincoln Kirstein's formation of an American ballet company, to Pop performances and contemporary epic opera. These works demonstrate how artists have used drawing strategies to, as one critic put it, "anticipate an event": interpreting texts to create dramatic mises-en-scène, imagining bodies in space and motion, and manipulating illumination and shadow. Featured artists include Fernand Léger, Sonia Delaunay-Terk, Marc Chagall, Diego Rivera, and Jim Dine."

Quite a wonderful exhibit.  -And if you'd like to take a gander at it yourself, I have a couple of free guest passes right now.

The two worst solo singers were Stockard and Craig Bierko, and they're actors who sing rather than singers. I'm not sure they could hear the orchestra or their nerves made them sing off pitch.

The opening number is worth seeing......but it's kind of a mish mosh......and really points up the shortcomings of the shows that have.....shortcomings.

The two worst solo singers were Stockard and Craig Bierko, and they're actors who sing rather than singers. I'm not sure they could hear the orchestra or their nerves made them sing off pitch.

Uh...yea....that happens to me, too.

I hate to say that there's one show that I'm rooting against, but after the events of yesterday, when the groundhog revealed that I will have at least 3 more weeks of hell, I can't help it. I don't expect said show to win anyway, so I don't think my sentiments will hurt it none...

DR edi, this is making me want to go to New York to see shows. Not any time soon, but....

Speaking of seeing shows. Last night at Phantom, a lot of people had late seating, including two I had to stand up for, they were drinking, getting up to go to the bathroom etc.

DR Cillaliz, you looked great in your Vegas pix!

What the hell is THIS crap doing on Broadway?

My sentiments exactly.  Epitomizes all that's bad about Broadway.  Deadly revivals, musicals from movies, crap nostalgia.  Mics and visible ones. The guy from Guys & Dolls has no charisma.  Stockard can't sing, her plastic surgery is bad.  Jane Fonda looks elegant and should give Stockard the name of her plastic surgeon/

I guess I also don't "get" how it's a marketing tool.  Facebook I get, MySpace I got.  Other places I get.  Twitter I don't get.  Doesn't mean I won't do updates for Kritzerland or Nudie there, but I don't get it and I don't know that it does one bit of good.  But if it makes others happy, then that's a beautiful thing.  In a year or two it will be replaced by the next "thing" and in five years people will be scratching their collective heads as to why they ever thought Twittering was so novel or such a good idea.

DR Charles Pogue

I bought an issue of Creative Screenwriter and they talk about your version of  The Fly and the "lost scene" which happens right after the finale scene. From what I understand there were several variations to the scene and it was ultimately drooped.

Was this in your original screenplay or was it something that Cronenberg added?

I guess I also don't "get" how it's a marketing tool.  Facebook I get, MySpace I got.  Other places I get.  Twitter I don't get.  Doesn't mean I won't do updates for Kritzerland or Nudie there, but I don't get it and I don't know that it does one bit of good.  But if it makes others happy, then that's a beautiful thing.  In a year or two it will be replaced by the next "thing" and in five years people will be scratching their collective heads as to why they ever thought Twittering was so novel or such a good idea.

It's micro-blogging.  It's supposed to be small.  It's meant to lead to other things, meant to link to other things.

As a record producer, you could post an announcement about your latest release - and post a link to the Kritzerland website so that anyone who comes across your "tweet" can purchase said latest release.

As a theatrical writer and producer, you could post the dates of your next production, and a link to where someone could make a reservation to attend the presentation.

There is quite a number of Sci-Fi enthusiasts on Twitter, and I'm wondering what would happen if you posted a tweet that included the words "The Creature Wasn't Nice"... You'd probably gain a new follower or two.

And as DR Druxy discovered, there's quite a network of writers and publishers who Tweet too.

Again, you don't have to get it.  Just do it or don't do it.

I have heard that this Guys and Dolls is a complete travesty from start to finish, and directors like Des McAnuff should not be allowed to touch classic musicals, because people like him feel it's their duty to improve them with their "concepts."  Note to Des:  Guys and Dolls didn't need your help.  It's a perfect musical and was basically indestructible until you came along and made the incredibly ignorant addition of Damon Runyon to make this show Brechtian.  You are a fool, sir - high schools can't screw up Guys and Dolls and yet you can.  Bravo.  Have you heard the expression "trust the material?"  If you don't, don't do the show.  I haz spoken, Des.

The answer, since I have figured out the show, is a big no.  It's lucky to be on Broadway, lucky to have gotten rave reviews, and I liked it better than I thought I would, but I don't think the show will have a huge life after B'way.

Today, I put together my sister's entertainment center.  It's six shelf units around the section that holds the TV and I had to put it all back together myself.  Well, the shelf units were already together...I just had to screw some 1x4s into the wall to support the shelves so that they don't fall if we ever have an earthquake.  Then I came home and now I'm FINALLY able to ketchup on everything. :)

I have a WSS question.  I thought the Puerto Ricans sang all of their songs in Spanish.  Then why is A BOY LIKE THAT / I HAD A LOVE sung in English.

Not entirely.

It is so strange to hear Dolly's voice coming out of this weird looking....alien.

Did anyone watch her on "60 Minutes," tonight?  It's on right now, but her segment hasn't been shown, yet.

At least part of the segment is a repeat.   I saw Dolly in concert a couple years ago.  She was wonderful

I'm glad my track record of predicting the best actress in a musical category correctly is untarnished.  Alice promised she'd think of me if she won - wonder if she did?  When I told Marissa Jaret Winokur she was going to win she scoffed and had already resigned herself - I told her she'd be going up there and she told me she'd thank me if I was right.  I was - she didn't thank me.  And therefore her career has gone directly into the toilet :)

Gavin Creel is so cute!

Umm... YES. HE. IS.

*And I'm a little embarrassed to admit it, but the first time that I played an audition for him, I caught myself staring into his eyes for a just a bit longer than I probably should have.  Not that he minded.  ;)

Who would?

Michael Feinstein reminded me of what a great song, I Won't Send Roses is.  You wonder if Jerry Herman is sitting backstage listening to the new crop of musicals going: "What is this crap?"

Even Jerry Herman was "crap" at one point and time.

As was Bach... Beethoven... Mahler... Richard Rogers... Stephen Sondheim...

I never found them to be so.  Herman has never been my favourite, but next to some of the stuff I've seen (Rock of Ages?  Please!  It's not even good Rock 'n' Roll), I'm getting nostalgic for him.

Most of the shows have a "traveling set" they use for special events, television promos and other appearances.  However, some shows do break down part of their set right after the Sunday matinée.

*Of course, Guys & Dolls set is composed mainly of projections, so...

Did anyone here record this?? :D

I did.  But, alas, I have no way to transfer it to a DVD.  I believe that DR td may know "somewhere".  ;)

I actually have a dvd with minor synch problems, but it's watchable.

The opening number was not the BEST most AMAZING thing EVER.  It wasn't a disaster, but close, thanks to inept TV direction, bad sound, and having Elton and Dolly is shameful, IMO.  They are NOT in the shows and should have been presenters or had some other segment - unless it was mentioned that they're not in the shows, which it wasn't and which was the problem with the entire opening number - no context - tell us what we're seeing.  Neil is fine, and I liked the acceptance speech of the Joe Turner guy, who DID thank the person who told him he was going to win.

My question is what is WRONG with Liza?  She's just like mom; except that mom had the good luck to die early before the legend was completely destroyed (Eww!  Am I being needlessly cruel?).

Rock of Ages - a new low for the Tonys and Broadway.

Well, that figures.  It was a new low for Rock and Roll.

Best Special Theatrical Event:  Liza's At the Palace!

I'd rather Will Ferrell had won.  And, of course, Liza ruins her moment by making a rather wandering gush of a speech.  Did you see the expressions on the faces of a couple of the guys behind her.  One of them looking to the wings, expecting the hook to come out.  Of course, Liza's manic, desperate style of performing never really appealled to me when she was young.

A correction and a link...

The lyrics for NPH's closing number were by March Shaiman and Scott Wittman (DUH!).

Well, I'd be remiss if I didn't help out.
I've been swamped with getting school stuff done in light of the coming Nudie week, but I'm on a break.

Sounds like a rollercoaster of a show happening.

I'm out here, baby.  For the duration.  Which, after the horror show that was Sit Down You're Rockin' The Boat, is difficult.  I have never seen anything as bad as this Sit Down - the number didn't need a new orchestration and a new arrangement and it didn't need Mary Testa to rob the person whose song it is of his final big moment.  How DARE these people.  The chutzpah is truly nauseating.  And B'way has truly forgotten what a rideout is - every single damn number has to have a short note and a musical bump (button).  EVERY SINGLE DAMN ONE AND I AM SO TIRED OF IT.  Sorry, I got carried away with the caps lock, but really, these people need to be stopped.

I think I'll have some buttered popcorn, because this has been a wretched food day - every single thing I ate was bad, from the fatty chicken tenders (how do you have fatty chicken tenders), to the lobster macaroni (okay, not terrible or good), to the fruit I got - sour honeydew, sour cantaloupe, blechh.

I can't stay. Alas.  I've only had five hours sleep the last two nights. And the Tonys have been sleep-inducing. No matter how late I take the dog out for his final walk.  He'll still get me up right at nine.  You can set your clock by the little silly bugger.

Why do they keep reminding people.  It's not like they haven't had ample time to get the message the last two years or so.  Let those who have not moved up have their TVs go out.  Then they'll move their ass into the 21st Century...or go read a book...by the fire.

It was very thoughtful of him to bring his wife upstage.  Certainly gave me something to look at.  Dolly Parton's first time at the Tonys and she gets upstaged by Jbarra's wife.  Oh, my!

All right, I'm now officially annoyed - what was the friggin' retard director of this show thinking in his direction of the dead people tribute.  How DARE him - let's see the PEOPLE AND THEIR NAMES, not roaming shots of nameless people singing and blocking the screen on which the names and photos are being projected.  Honestly, it's not brain surgery doing these shows and these people are REALLY well paid, yet they do a job that a grade school child would do.  How disrespectful and awful and again a new low for this show.

Well, I sat outside and enjoyed the lovely evening until it got dark. Then I came inside and watched a few clips, starting at Guys and Dolls. I can't say there's anything that would make me go see a show. And I saw several shows that will probably be in my season tickets in the near future that I will want to give away.
