Well, you've read the notes, the notes were labored, and now it is time for you to post until the labored cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: JORUM!
-
Topic of the Day: two of my favorite amusement parks rides are Space Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain at Disneyland. I've never gone on a roller coaster that went upside down.
The earliest sorts of rides that I can remember going on was when we lived in Germany (when I was between 4 and 7 years old), we went to some German places with kind of smallish rides...nothing like big roller coasters. I can't remember any specifics. I was much too young.
-
And now, I must go to sleep. I have to go to work for a few hours, then TAO (http://www.olytheater.com/source/TAOSeason09-10.htm) is having elections for new officers...and a potluck barbecue. :D
Good night, BK.
Have a good day, all!
-
I just love the big roller coasters. But the DH doesn't, so I haven't been on one in AGES.
-
The first amusement park I remember was called Riverside somewhere in Indy. It had a wooden roller coaster called the Thriller that lived up to its name.
I also now enjoy Kings Island in Ohio - especially The Beast roller coaster, but I just realized I haven't been there in about 15 years. It was called Paramount's Kings Island for a long time, and there were characters from Star Trek The Next Generation walking around including some really MEAN Romulans...and it was featured in a last season episode of The Brady Bunch....before the Romulans.
-
DR ELMORE is correct, I think this play is an audience pleaser.... Last night's audience laughed even more and louder and longer....
Officer Brophy remembered his blackjack....we had NO scene change music in Act Two or Act Three....oh well. We have less than 10 tickets left for the show tonight, so that is good news.
Thanks to everyone for the vibes and good wishes.
-
The kittens are lovely.
The DeFranco Family always dressed SO weird....to match their choreography, I guess.
Working until 3 p.m. and then off to performance #3 of ARSENIC & OLD LACE.
The kittens are adorable!

My all-time favorite experience for the TOD was the very first time I rode Maelstrom at Epcot. Later visits were not as effective, perhaps because the surprises weren't there any more, but I've always suspected (with no evidence other than its impact) that they had toned it down.
One that I'll miss because I assume I will never find it again is Journey to Jerusalem, using the thrill ride approach and where you assume the point of view of a piece of Torah parchment being whisked to various locations in ancient Israel. it was part of the special round-the-world part of Epcot in 2000. (Part of the fun was the no-nonsense folks running the line. Where elsewhere at Walt Disney World they were so polite in managing the lines, at this one the young fellow just waved his arms and shouted "Would you move?")
-
Sounds purrr-fect, DAW
(almost a Catwoman reference)
-
Good morning!
Cool morning-hot day. That seems to be a pattern that we're going to have during the next week. It's getting up close to 90 today. Ugh!
-
No, bk, I have not made up my mind to like DUPLICITY before I see it. That would be kind of idiotic for a critic even when he's NOT being a critic, and it's kind of insulting that you'd say that (though you did use a smily face).
I loved MICHAEL CLAYTON. I loved the chemistry that Julia Roberts and Clive Owen had in CLOSER. I can't HELP but feel great anticipation over seeing the film. I know it got mixed reviews (though it certainly got some very positive ones). I know it was a box-office disappointment.
But I hope you will allow me to look forward to a film without accusing me of making up my mind ahead of time.
-
With no Paramount TV box sets, and those two Criterion Blu-rays not due until September 22, I have decided to take Saturday and SUnday off. I will do one of the Criterions on Monday, and then maybe on Tuesday, the Paramount box sets will arrive and I can begin watching those TV episodes. Two of the shows I'm supposed to get I watched during the regular season: GHOST WHISPERER and CSI: NY. The other is ONE STEP BEYOND which I haven't seen in, what, forty years or something.
-
Today I plan to watch one of the Blu-rays I got for my birthday. It's likely going to be THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR. Can't decide if I'll watch it in the afternoon or evening. Likely I'll wait until tonight since this afternoon it would get interrupted by the usual Saturday phone calls and other distractions.

TOD.
1st Ride:
I believe it was Old MacDonald Farm in Connecticut. I was visiting my cousin one summer and all I remember is that there was a ride that had old antique cars and you drive around a track. There was a metal bar in the middle so you couldn't drive off. I went around and around on. I love it. First my father would drive and then my mother would take me. There is a wonderful picture of me and my mother having fun. I must have it at least 10 times.
Favorite ride:
I think it has to be the Spiderman ride at Universal Studios followed by the Popeye ride when one gets drench.
Most Recent:
I did all the roller coaster at Tampa's Busch Gardens. All but one were amazing.
-
TOD:
At regular amusement parks, I always loved the Tilt-a-Whirl. We'd ride that over and over.
At Disney World/Disneyland:
Space Mountain was a blast and I also adored the Tower of Terror at Disney-MGM. We rode that something like four times in one day.
Busch Gardens in Tampa had a marvelous roller coaster that turned you upside down. I've been on others but that one (which I forget the name of) was really a lot of fun, and my friend Hal and I rode it twice.
-
On the pain front, I had another successful night of sleep without having to get up in the middle of the night to massage the pain out of my shoulder/arm.
However, my right hand has been cramping a lot this morning (just like yesterday). That has become my most recurring area for pain.
-
I saw that MY FAIR LADY is up for preordering.
It is so strange to see it being released by Paramount after all these years.
I realize that Warner Brother distribution rights went back to CBS (which owns Paramount) but I have always thought of it as a Warner Brothers film.
Just as all the MGM Movies are now Warner Brothers.
Also strange that the original Star Trek series is being distributed by CBS (Paramount) when it originally aired.
I am sure that people born in the last 20-30 years or so don't care but somehow I am a traditionalist when it comes to my entertainment

How about Kitten Caboodle?
-
Good morning, all! I have a luncheon date with a conductor friend at 1 and a showing of THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE with my friend Matthew at 5:30. Until then, I have work on the score of OH, BOY! and that's my day.
I slept late, which was nice, and now I have things to do.
-
I have some computer maintenance projects to perform, and then I'll head down to watch some BONES episodes before I start on preparing some lunch.
WBBL.

Saturday morning greetings! Gearing up for the first college football Saturday of 2009 - Go Blue!!!
Even an "animal grinch" like me can't help but love this story:
Miracle Cat (http://www.daytondailynews.com/news/dayton-news/miracle-cat-survives-26-days-stuck-in-fire-debris-282750.html)
This is the flower shop fire that Richard and I encountered on one of our early-morning trips to John's hospital bedside.
-
How about those Mets?
-
I stood there, wondering why that baseball was getting bigger.
Then it hit me.
-
Wow. Lucky cat.
-
There is a storm coming our way.

I believe I was joking, based on your post - hence, the smiley face. Surely you know a joke when you see one and I think, since I quoted your post, that it was obvious. If not, sorry.
-
I was awakened by some heinous machine noise next door - maybe someone forgot to tell these oafs (sfoa, spelled backwards) that it's a holiday weekend. Of course, now the machine is silent. I believe I'll go tell the oafs it's a holiday weekend and thanks very much for the ruder than rude Saturday morning wake-up call.
-

And if he doesn't return, we know where the body is buried!
-
I'm off to the grocery store, so I can be back and have dinner (I'm thinkin' pork roast) started before Michigan's 3:30pm kick-off.
Bye for now!
-
I'm awake, and here on HHW first thing!
TOD - Splash Mountain at Disneyland. While I enjoy the version at Walt Disney World, I enjoy the Disneyland version better. I do like a good coaster also, however, coaster design somehow doesn't permit for large people.
And so I begin my Labor Day weekend with labor. Gotta cut the lawn
-
It is DS Zach's birthday today (not to be confused with DAW's DD Zach, though my hunch is they often behave the same). :)
-
Happy Birthday to Zach!
-
TOD: I'm sure my first ride was at Enchanted Island in Encanto Park (which DR Kerry will certainly remember).
He will also remember Legend City, which, although it was in walking distance of my house, I only went to once or twice.
My favorite rides are at Disneyland, where I haven't been in years. We used to take the kids quite a lot, though.
-
We had a very small amount of sprinkles, and now I think the storm has passed us.
-
DR Laura, the kittens are just adorable!
DAW, you have given me many hearty chuckles this morning!
Now I am off to do laundry and some house cleaning before heading to south Salem for to have lunch with my buddy Mustafa.
-
Thank you all for your comments on the kittens. They will truly be adorable at about five to six weeks old.
-
And now it is pouring rain.
-
Has one seen the "restored" video/blu ray release of Gulliver's Travels (1939) From the Fleischer Studios?
How good is this restoration?
-
We could sure use some pouring rain.
-
Shayne, the Gulliver's Travels on Blu-Ray is, by all accounts, the single worst Blu-Ray in existence and no better than a public domain (which it is) copy on DVD.
-
If you are having trouble waking up this Saturday morning, just give this a watch...it will perk you right up! It makes the Village People look like Lawrence Welk.

Oh dear, it looks like it is going to be a very l-o-n-g and very slow weekend at HHW.

Has one seen the "restored" video/blu ray release of Gulliver's Travels (1939) From the Fleischer Studios?
How good is this restoration?
The restoration is quite good, actually. What spoils the release is the incredibly stupid decision to crop the original 1.33:1 image to 1.78:1, making it "widescreen." I believe I posted about this when it came out--I actually have no problem with them doing that, for the people who want their widescreen tv's "filled up" (though it's funny to remember just a few years ago, quite the opposite was true--standard tv owners complaining about black bars and such), but why they didn't also include the OAR version is beyond me. The BD does also have some Fleischer short subjects on it.

DR TCB - You talk as though "long and slow" is a bad thing?

Question for those using iTunes to upload CD's and such: When you have a CD with two "albums" included (such as The Apartment/The Fortune Cookie), do you split the upload into two separate albums? (by changing titles and such). It would make for easier access I would think....

Dear MBarnum, nice video.

The nice thing about getting up early is that I had a chance to open the doors/windows/drapes for a few hours before it started to get hot. But not at 10:00 I'm back in my cave.
Off to errands.

Have a :-\ :) HHW day.

As for the Topic of the Day...
I'm really not sure what my first amusement park ride was, however, I'm thinking it might have been the kiddie rollercoaster in the park at the base of the Space Needle in Seattle.
When we lived in Connecticut, there was a company that ran all these "portable midways'. I would always win free tickets to them from WRNL. During the summer months, my parents would usually take us to one each weekend - and I'm guessing the free tickets probably may have had something to do with that. ;)
-
As for the Topic of the Day (Part Deux)...
My favorite ride is The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror (http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/parks/hollywood-studios/attractions/twilight-zone-tower-of-terror/) at Disney's Hollywood Studios (formerly MGM) in Walt Disney World.
The drop(s) are great, but it even has a great "pre-show".

Here's a question for you country music fans out there. Does anyone have Don't Let the Stars Get In Your Eyes as sung by George Jones? It's available by all sorts of people and we have a Perry Como version but we are specifically looking for George Jones (it was used in Big Eden). The only CD listing I can find is out of print "George Jones Sings the Hits of His Country Cousins". One user is selling the CD used for $17.99 and another is selling it for something like $68. I will check at Academy when we get back in the city but for now I thought I would ask at my lovely neighborhood hangout.
I've googled all over the place. I haven't been able to find any Youtube or other video clips of him performing the song either.
-
TOD: cont'd
By the time I was 5 we had visited POP and Disneyland, and I rode on the Matterhorn and Teacups (both of which I adored and still adore) and whatever rollercoasters they'd let me ride on. The rules weren't very strictly enforced then, so I got to ride on a lot of rides not meant for kids as short as I. I was hooked then and still am.
From then, it was many years where I merely made do with the Octopus, the Tilt-A-Whirl and whatever else was semi-interesting. The rides at the state fair were OK but not nearly as fun as permanently installed thrill rides at real amusement parks!
-
TOD: The Magnum roller coaster. There is one (or like it if not that same name) at Cedar Point and at Six Flags Magic Mountain.
-
The kittens are lovely.

Happiest of birthdays to Zach, DS of DR JMK!
-
In what I believe is only the second time in my life I've done this, I took Zach to Target to get school clothes and discovered upon arriving I had not brought my wallet. Luckily I had a lot of cash with me, so we were able to complete the purchase, but (and I know how silly this sounds), I just didn't feel "safe" driving without my wallet and ID.
-
I've googled all over the place.
I think they have pills for that now.

Cute!! LOL :D
Yes, we went there a lot (for us, anyway--- meaning several times a summer) from its first year up through my junior year in high school. I enjoyed it a lot (not that we had many choices in Phoenix), but the rides themselves were pretty so-so (comme ci, comme ca, cosi cosa, etc.)
-
My mom wouldn't let me go. :(
-
TOD - I remember riding the wooden carousel at Great Falls of the Potomac during my family's mid-1950s visit to Washington, DC. Apparently, the carousel was destroyed in flooding brought about by Hurricane Agnes in 1972.
I'm not a big fan of amusement park rides, but have fond memories of Disneyland and Universal Studios. We were there in 1996 and had great fun on Pirates of the Caribbean, Indiana Jones, Star Tours (twice!), the ET bike ride, and the Jurassic Park flume. At Disneyland we rode in the front car of It's a Small World, Richard singing at the top of his lungs. Rob (age 11) was mortified.
-
Happiest of birthdays to Zach, DS of DR JMK!
Ditto!! ;D

And now that I've just popped in, it's time to pop out (and that's not a euphemism...unless you want it to be ;)). Time to go to work, then to the pot-luck/TAO elections!
Have a good day, all. :D

My mom wouldn't let me go. :(
Between that and the Donny Osmond concert, your mom (sweet as she was and as good-intentioned as she may have been) sure rained on your parade!!!!

I (also) worked lines at Epcot and, with the heat and crowds, that can be quite a task!

Now I have to decide whether to put the pork roast in the oven before Michigan's kickoff or wait until halftime.

Disney MGM is now DISNEY HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS!
(I am somewhat glad they got rid of the MGM connection, even though this is the last Disney theme park on my list; and I was part of the opening crew in May 1989!!)
I ALWAYS hated "roller coaster rides"! (You have to know!)
I thought I'd die on one at the Prater in Vienna. I can take "Big Thunder" at Disney to a point. I like rides that bring joy to one's eyes and not shake and rattle one's whole body!

Yes! THAT is my favo(u)rite!
I try to board it early in the day or late at night when the lines don't exist anymore. That ride can be so moving (Yeah ... a moving ride. LOL!)
It's funny that the meaning of the theme song (About friendship between the nations of the world) has been lost over the years.
I wish I could see the ride when it's all decked for Xmas.

The "Small World" ride is quite nice at Christmas. And the best part is so much of the ride is Christmas songs from around the world, so that you're only bombarded with "It's a Small, Small World" for a very brief time (which is still more than long enough to drive one totally insane!)

Believe it or not ... I do have the soundtrack on cd! The Xmas one that is, but I also have the original one (From 1964) which is quite wonderful with the different arrangements to fit the different countries.
(We need to remember that the ride was created for the UNICEF Pavilion of the 1964 NY World Fair.)
That song could never drive me insane because ... I was born insane!! :)

I finaly heard from George today, who apologized for the situation. I know a lot of it is his concern about his eye operation, but it sounds as if his family's having problems this week as well. He did tell me that he will get to the bookcases this week and I told him I needed saving from the clutter.
I am back from a nice lunch, and now I'm ready to head down to Lincoln Center to meet Matthew for THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE. I'm looking forward to it.
DR Jose, are you back to Manhattan yet? Matthew's a nice single gentleman you should meet.

Plus, I believe they reformatted it to widescreen thus cropping picture information. After reading the reviews, I stayed as far away from it as I could.

I continued watching BONES episodes right through eating lunch. I watched probnably my favorite BONES episode: the one when Tempi and Hodgins get buried alive in her car. As many times as I've seen it, it never fails to capture my complete attention and to make me weep. It's a brilliant episode.

This afternoon I watched another Agatha Christie adaptation - MURDER IN MESAPOTAMIA with the fantastic David Suchet as Poirot. One of her best mysteries and the Tv adaptation is very well done and beautifully cast.
-
I haven't watched PROJECT RUNWAY yet. I want to watch that before I settle in with THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR on Blu-ray tonight.
-
OK, my afternoon surf was a very quick one, so I'm heading back down to get the evening viewing started.
WBBL.

Is there a "Big Eden" soundtrack available?
Nope, that's why I was asking. The film is out on DVD but they never released a "soundtrack". It's probably a licensing nightmare.
-
TOD probablymy first rides were at the Massapequa Zoo wher my Dad used to take me every Sunday afternoon - it had a helipcopter ride that you could control yourself making it go up or down by pushing the lever forward and back. I was very fond of that. I also there was a "boat ride" little boats that went around like a merry go ride but they were in water and had a steering wheel and the all important bell that you could ring as long and loud as you wanted and of course it also had a merry go round - I always chose a horse that went up and down, none of those stationary horses or coaches for this girl.
Alas the Massapequa Zoo is no more - it was turned into a shopping center
-
http://www.forgottenli.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=13
It also had a zoo in the backof tehpark - I loved Monkey Mountain
-
We also went very often to Adventureland - that still exists - I understand that the recent movie by the same name was actually based upon this park - although not shot there becuse it no longer resembles the Adventureland of the 1970's
Sweet Liberty and Music & Lyrics both shot scenes at our Adventureland though

OK-- I figured you'd probably prefer the soundtrack than a whole CD of George Jones (but I could be wrong). Anyway, I'll keep an eye out. Keep us posted--OK?

My favorite All time ride ever has to Be Journey to Mars at Epcot - which the Vixfamily rode before it was opened. We were chosen to preview the ride and I loved it so much I begged for a second trip - Vixdad was afraid that itr was going to give him a heart attack though
The Epcot race track, the Twilight Zone Drop and the Runaway Train in the Magic Kingdom are all favorites as well.
Alsl the Dudly DoRight roller coaster , the Popeye Cruise ride, the Spider Man ride and the Jurassic Park ride at Islands of Adventure were all great - alas so was the no more to be found Back to the Future and King Kong rides

Well off to do more errands - tomorrow is out Avenue Q day!!
-
Enjoy the show and Page 5 dance!!!
-
long enough to drive one totally insane!
For some DRs it is a shorter trip than for others. ;)

Been to Cinecon, and have been unboxing books and putting them on the new metal shelves ever since. I'm exhausted! But we unboxed about thirty boxes, and that alleviated all the sag from the wood shelves where they were, so all is well in that regard. He's now putting everything away (he had to move a lot of stuff) and then the garage project will be done!

We are trying to put together our own CD. We have every track from the movie except the George Jones track. I'll keep looking.

It is DS Zach's birthday today ...
Are you saving up for the big 13?
der Brucer
My thoughts. It is easier the 2nd time, just be sure to save all the info from the last party.
Happy Birthday Zack!
-
At Disneyland we rode in the front car of It's a Small World, Richard singing at the top of his lungs. Rob (age 11) was mortified.
;D ;D
-
Wonderful story about Smoka the miracle cat.
-
(http://www.annettesacre.com/pics/misc/zach_cake.jpg)
Gosh!
Some Birthday cakes can look so ugly!!
True. It looks like an ice cream cake & might be tastier than it looks. I hope that Zachary is an M & M's fans.
-
I continued watching BONES episodes right through eating lunch. I watched probnably my favorite BONES episode: the one when Tempi and Hodgins get buried alive in her car. As many times as I've seen it, it never fails to capture my complete attention and to make me weep. It's a brilliant episode.
Great episode.
Thanks for mentioning DUPLICITY. A NetFlix didn’t arrive today leaving us with nothing to watch until Tuesday’s mail. DUPLICITY is on Directv pay per view. Maybe we will watch it tonight.
-
I dunno. That cake has M&Ms on it, which makes it okay by me.
-
DR François is there such a thing as an ugly cake in Paris?
-
Almost finished, just putting away the last of the stuff, and the garage looks faboo, and my car will now fit in there quite wonderfully and easily.
-
And I'm starving, so I may go grab a bite somewhere, but I have no idea what I want or if I want to go sit somewhere or bring something back here.
-
I could, of course, make some pasta with butter and cheese, but I eat too much if I do that. I could go to Hugo's and have pasta papa and a small salad, or I could go to the Studio Cafe and have wings. However, frankly I don't feel like any of it. I know I don't want Jerry's - been having that way too much lately, and definitely don't want Du-Par's. What to do? Certainly not Gelson's. Which only leaves pizza, Subway (a possibility) or something I'm not thinking of like Popeye's (well, I just thought of it so I am thinking of it).
-
If I hadn't found out the caloric and fat-gram count of the Hamlet nachos, I'd go have me an order of those - but since I did, I just can't do it. It's like 2000 calories and 200 grams of fat - absolutely outrageous.
-
I could go have a salad at Stanley's.
-
I don't know.
-
Pizza would be quick and easy at Quickie's but I've been spoiled by Dino's.
-
I could go to the barbecue jernt, but I eat too much there.
-
Oh, dear, oh, dear.
-
I got a couple of packages today - nothing too interesting.
-
And I have to decide what I'm watching, other than a very low-budget Brit gangster film from the late 60s by a director I've never heard of - it's on Blu-Ray and plays in US players.
-
Could watch Ghostbusters on Blu-Ray, or a DVD of Miracle Mile, which I've been told is good, or Inspector Closeau with Alan Arkin, which I know is not.
-
What am I, doing a monologue?
-
Maybe Hugo's is the answer.
-
Maybe not.
-
DR François is there such a thing as an ugly cake in Paris?
Well, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", they say, so ... BUT, cakes in France tend , imho, to look more "sophisticated" (Elaborated) than the ones I saw in the States!
-
I dunno. That cake has M&Ms on it, which makes it okay by me.
Why is it that most edible items in the US have to be associated with a brand?!?
Cultural differences I guess! ;)
-
We we were in Paris I discovered Madeline's, and then discovered the bakery that made the best Madeline's and returned there on a daily basis. On a small scale that is similar to having a favorite brand :)
-
I am thinking about making some broccoli cheese soup.

DR François is there a name for the shopping area in Paris with the cobblestone streets? I remember shops with stalls outside selling their wares, mostly of clothing and flowers. We found a wine shop & purchased a bottle of Champagne. We then found a pastry shop & purchased a wonderful French pizza and a couple of yummy napoleons. We stored it all in the frig in our hotel room until dinner time where we enjoyed a view of the Eiffel Tower while we ate. The meal was delicious.

Hmmm ... there are many cobblestone streets in Paris ... Sometimes stalls are on the sidewalks during special events like Xmas or Fall Markets ... or street markets on Wedneday mornings and saturday mornings ...

I want to have my own madeleine and eat it too! ;)

Hmmm, it has been a number of years since we were there. It wasn't far from our hotel. In a different direction, and close to the hotel was a military museum which was very interesting. The first day I arrived I was on my own & went shopping to find a pair of French jeans. I discovered the cobblestone streets & loads of wonderful shops, and beautiful flower stands everywhere. I can't say where I was. It was a fun side of Paris we would have missed and I not forgotten to pack jeans.

The market with the nice bakery stopped carrying the Madeleine's I like.

Roast pork, cornbread stuffing (yeah, yeah, Stove Top...), steamed corn - yum!

DR Ginny is "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" on your book group list? The title didn't appeal to me and gave me a very different image of the contents. I had to read it for our September meeting and have been enchanted. I did not want the book to end.
DR George this now answers your question from July 29th.
-
Except for the roast, it sound good. We have corn to steam tonight.
-
DR Jane - the daytime book group is reading the Guernsey book for October. I might suggest to my evening group that we read it too.
-
I used to love roller coasters, but I haven't been on one in years. I was ready to try the one at NY, NY in Vegas, but I couldn't get anyone to go on it with me. I used to love Montezooma's Vegenge and Boomerarng at Knott's Berry Farm. I am probably too old for roller coasters now.
I love the Haunted Mansion, Pirates, the Matterhorn, and Space Mountain for adult fun at Disneyland; but I can't leave without visiting Peter Pan, Snow White, and It's A Small World, either.

I'm down to two choices for the November meeting at my house. I'm deciding between PEOPLE OF THE BOOK by Geraldine Brooks or HOTEL ON THE CORNER OF BITTER AND SWEET by Jamie Ford. That is unless I can find something better, and read it, before Tuesday.
Has anyone read either book?

DR TCB the photo makes me smile too :)

DR Jane, my group read PEOPLE OF THE BOOK and loved it. The fiction goddesses at my former workplace have all raved about THE HOTEL AT THE CORNER OF BITTER AND SWEET.

I could go have a salad at Stanley's.
Bruce, for a change of pace, have you ever gotten one of the salads from Subway. I love having the turkey salad, double meat (sorry Jane)?

How depressing! The Danbury Mint thinks that I would be interested in their new 22kt Gold Card series from STAR TREK.

I remember being a kid at either Disney World or Disneyland and going on Space Mountain. But i don't think you could see what it was and i was a bit scared.

I'm watching episodes 9, 10,11 of TRUE BLOOD 2 tonight (or as much as i get to).
I'm also reading Sophie Kinsella's new book Twenties Girl.
I requsted DUPLICITY from the library. But they have not gotten the August movies yet.
I believe my mom saw it in the theatre and did not like it. She found it very confusing.
-
I would love to go to Paris one day!

And there is my dilemma, I agree with both comments. I wish I owned People instead of getting it from the library. There aren't any copies for me to check out so I need to buy one. I want to read it again to make my decision. I tend to prefer to discuss a complete novel to short stories, which People is in a way. Quickly, read Hotel for me and tell me which to choose. ;)

The last roller coaster I was on was the one at Camp Snoopy, INSIDE the Mall of America in Minneapolis.
We had just eaten an ENORMOUS meal at the Rainforest Cafe. My brother-in-law and I decided we just had to ride the roller coaster. We were the only ones on, that I recall. We were plunked into the front car, and when the locking bar was engaged, it almost didn't close over our bursting bellies. I just remember being incredibly uncomfortable and cackling uncontrollably for the entire duration of the ride. :)

Oh I remember La Ronde, way back in the seventies, (I lived in Montréal then) and the remaining Pavilions of the 1967 World Fair . They still had the 360° Circarama movie of CANADA that Disney had done
http://esoterisme-exp.com/Section_dossier/Expo67/expo67-1.jpg
... I also remember a terrific School Band that I listened to for quite a while. The kids were terrific. We do not have bands in school here and that was a novelty for a French hick then.
Since then I have seen the bands at Disney's and I am still mesmerized. A little too loud at times but quite a sight to see, mainly when they also have dancers.

Well, I go to the early morning showings; very few people, tickets are almost half price ...
Films should be seen on a theater screen NOT at home! Of course, I am an old bag who did not know TV or video-players when young!
AND WHY DO PEOPLE HAVE A NEED TO TALK DURING A FILM OR A PLAY, may I ask? :(

Don't really have time to catch up right now. But I learned today that I am a total softie. Phoebe that cat was howling in the other roon tonight. We looked in and dad said "Oh, she's playing with her mouse" I said "But Dad, she doesn't have a mouse" It was a real live mouse!!
The cat who is so spoiled she gets carried everywhere was on the porch with a living breathing mouse. Oh she was playing with a mouse all right. It's minutes were numbered. So mom is screaming "Flush it down the stool!" I couldn't. I put it in a bag, took it about 5 doors down and across the road near the field and let it out of the bag.
I'm hoping it won't come back here, but if it does someone else will have to kill it.
-
You were near the Invalides

Well, this (then) hospital was "created" by Napoléon, to take care of the wounded soldiers. Hence "invalides"!
And boy, did HE know about wounded soldiers, that bloody bastard! Oooh! :P

I like the big old wooden ones!
The Puyallup Fair here in Washington (which I seem to be shilling lately) has a classic old wooden roller coaster. It is one of only 125 wooden coasters still operating. It lacks a lot of super thrills of the new types of coasters, but it is still a lot of fun, espeiclally after dark.

I usually have them put the oil and vinegar on it, an then I ask for a packet of ranch dressing that I add when I get home. It is heaven and you can choose your vegetables.

And the map does seem to show the area I was in. We can't remember the name of the dumpy hotel we stayed in. It was clean, had a frig, and the wonderful view. We really weren't in the room much & it was a fraction of the cost of the fancy hotels. If we had not stayed there we would have missed a very charming area & the interesting museum.
-
My favorite roller coaster, bar none, is The Thunderbolt at Kennywood Park, here in Pittsburgh.
http://tinyurl.com/ys2m5o (http://tinyurl.com/ys2m5o)
And speaking of Kennywood, DR Matt H, I finally saw ADVENTURELAND and probably liked it a lot more than you did. I found it to be a somber teen comedy, with an emphasis on character rather than situation. Kennywood Park looked fantastic in the film, as did this entire fair city.
-
I lived in Montréal then
Is there anywhere you haven't lived, DR François?
-
And if you want to save yourself the $4.00 ride price, plus related travel expenses, you can try out the Puyallup roller coaster at You Tube. However, frankly, it lacks something without everyone screaming.

It looks really scary, td. Will you hold my hand?

you can choose your vegetables.
But you can't choose your family. :)
Or your fellow posters!

you can try out the Puyallup roller coaster at You Tube.
I shall now be lost for HOURS watching roller coaster videos on YouTube!!! :P

I can tell you the first ride I took each of the boys on. With Bryan I went on a roller coaster that was so small my knees were sticking up. As I passed Keith I could see him laughing hysterically. Bryan loved it.
Craig went on lots of rides before he was born. His first ride was on the Merry-Go-Round at Paramus Mall in New Jersey.
-
WOW!
;D What a wonderful wooden coaster!!

Mid afternoon greetings.
THE OCTOPUS AT PACIFIC OCEAN PARK. (OVER THE OCEAN REMEMBER)
Oh and that glass ball sky ride over the water.
-
YES YES YES ;D
-
Good Evening!
Well...
*And that's it for this post.
-
I got a couple of packages today - nothing too interesting.
Did you get your fax?
-
the one that fell in the water with people in it.

Mid afternoon greetings.
THE OCTOPUS AT PACIFIC OCEAN PARK. (OVER THE OCEAN OR WAS IT JUST MY IMAGINATION)
I thought it was The Whip that went out over the ocean?
-
And the roller coaster that played rock music. At the end mainly the song The Pusher.
-
I too have been going on rides since I was just a tiny tyke & haven’t a clue what came first. My guess would be a ride at the little amusement park on Beverly and LaCienga. Oh did I love those pony rides. My father worked Saturdays & half days on Wednesdays, as did most doctors back then. His half Wednesdays often turned into full days. I remember many half Wednesdays when he took me to go on the rides, just the two of us.
Bruce you must watch this video I found, such memories…..http://hiddenlosangeles.com/?tag=beverly-center

DR DAW - What kind of videos do you normally watch for HOURS?
-
elmore - I didn't get the fax because I forgot and they didn't tell me it was there, which, of course, they should have - there should have been something in my mailbox about it. I'll get it tomorrow (I think they're open on Sundays now).
-
I had great fun in those days. I wish people took pictures more often in those days, not just on family vacations.
Funny, I don't remember anyone even having a camera, unless they were married or traveling.
-
I loved THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE, which is probably a fairer portrait of Anna Wintour than the one in THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. I think the film is quite well done.
-
The Whip was near the big roller coaster & didn't fall into the ocean. Now I'm trying to find a photo to prove my memory is correct.
-
Must leave this laughter and get back to the project in progress.
Good evening everyone.
-
I'm down to two choices for the November meeting at my house. I'm deciding between PEOPLE OF THE BOOK by Geraldine Brooks or HOTEL ON THE CORNER OF BITTER AND SWEET by Jamie Ford. That is unless I can find something better, and read it, before Tuesday.
Has anyone read either book?
DR Jane, my group read PEOPLE OF THE BOOK and loved it. The fiction goddesses at my former workplace have all raved about THE HOTEL AT THE CORNER OF BITTER AND SWEET.
And there is my dilemma, I agree with both comments. I wish I owned People instead of getting it from the library. There aren't any copies for me to check out so I need to buy one. I want to read it again to make my decision. I tend to prefer to discuss a complete novel to short stories, which People is in a way. Quickly, read Hotel for me and tell me which to choose. ;)
Sorry! Don't have a copy here and the libraries are closed until Tuesday - assuming the waiting list isn't a mile long! I'm trying not to buy every book I want to read.
-
I think the things that traveled on cable over the ocean to a turning station 300 feet out or so, fell. You rode in hanging bubbles.
-
That Swan's definitely cream puff, and quite light in taste with the Chantilly.
In New York City, there are two Japanese cream puff companies/stores. The first one to come to NYC was Beard Papa (http://www.muginohousa.com/). The second one - which is now down to a single NYC location - is...
Choux Factory (http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/choux-factory02/menus/main.html)
:)
-
Must go, have to be somewhere at 7.
-
Zach thanks you for your birthday wishes.
I grew up with Basset Hounds--love that pic!

My favorite roller coaster, bar none, is The Thunderbolt at Kennywood Park, here in Pittsburgh. http://tinyurl.com/ys2m5o (http://tinyurl.com/ys2m5o)
The website says that no single riders are permitted. I wonder if I can turn this into a business opportunity? ;)
Define "single"? ;)
-Although you just never know who might end up in the seat next to you. :)

I think the things that traveled on cable over the ocean to a turning station 300 feet out or so, fell. You rode in hanging bubbles.
Yes, I remember that.
-
I loved the Whip. It was one of my favorite rides along with Casey Jones Locker, the floor that dropped out from under you, and the fun house. I was not permitted on the big roller coaster until I was older and then it was Keith who saved me from falling out. I still wasn't big enough to ride it-lol. We went with friends, one of which was DR Penny.
-
DR DAW - I remember that rollercoaster at Mall of America. I think rode it three times. Twice before dinner, and once after. ;)
*I didn't eat at Rainforest Cafe - which I don't think was there yet when I went. However, the place we did eat at - maybe it was called "Atlantis"? - did have different themed rooms. I seem to remember eating in African desert room. ???
-
I think the things that traveled on cable over the ocean to a turning station 300 feet out or so, fell. You rode in hanging bubbles.
Yes, I remember that.
Wait! Did those "bubbles" fall to the ocean as part of the ride? Or did the ride eventually fall down one day?
-
It fell unintentionally.
-
RE: the TOD.
I remember being a kid at either Disney World or Disneyland and going on Space Mountain. But i don't think you could see what it was and i was a bit scared.
One of my favorite coasters is here (montreal) at La Ronde. The monster. I love that one!
I've only been to Disneyland once, and I'm trying to remember if Space Mountain was already open. I think it was. I do remember "Pirates of the Caribbean" there - and being a bit disappointed when the incarnation at Disney World did not have the same drops.
*One thing I've always wanted to do is ride Space Mountain, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster and/or Tower of Terror with the lights on. I have some friends who are "cast members", and they all say it truly is quite a different experience. Not only does the ride feel much slower, but you also get to see all the various things they store "in the dark": boxes of pamphlets, concession cups and plates, cleaning equipment, etc. ;)
-
It fell unintentionally.
Oh... :-\
-
We we were in Paris I discovered Madeline's, and then discovered the bakery that made the best Madeline's and returned there on a daily basis. On a small scale that is similar to having a favorite brand :)
DR Jane - The next time you come to New York City, I'll have to take you to Madeleine Patisserie (http://www.madeleinepatisserie.com/Madeleine_Patisserie/Home.html). Even though they're known as "La Maison du Macaron", they also make some wonderful madeleines. I'm particularly fond of their Rose and Walnut-Coffee ones.
*I believe I "enabled" DR edisaurus to this place. :)
-
I am thinking about making some broccoli cheese soup.
First you brown an onion...
-
We've just learned that the half-time show at Franklin High School's football game next Friday night will be dedicated to John. He was band director there for many years and all 3 of his daughters marched with the band.
-
I finaly heard from George today, who apologized for the situation.
DR elmore - Alas, I'm not back in Manhattan yet, and I'm probably not heading back until Monday or Tuesday morning (at the latest). I had planned to head back yesterday, but my travel options turned out to be a bit more limited than I thought they would. I also just needed a day to totally veg out it seems. But I shall return.
-Haven't I met Matthew once before? Or was that another Matthew?

Well off to do more errands - tomorrow is out Avenue Q day!!
DR vixmom - Well, unless I manage to make it back to NYC by 5:00 tomorrow afternoon, I'm afraid I will not be able to join you and the vixter for a post-Q meal. :( However, I'm pretty sure you'll still have a great time at the show.

*I'm just wondering who's is going to learn "more" tomorrow at Avenue Q - DR the vixter or DR vixmom? There is more to the internet than just HHW. ;D

Actually, DR TCB, I do know him. And I have his phone number(s) too.

A few of my all time favorite rides…
Disneyland:
Matterhorn
Space Mountain
Tea Cups
Pirates of the Caribbean
Rainbow Cavern Mine Train, which then became Through Nature's Wonderland. I preferred them both to the replacement , Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
Hershey Park:
Floor that drops out from under you
Sooperdooperlooper, the first looping roller coaster on the East Coast
Cedar Point:
The Magnum, if that is the big roller coaster that isn’t a wooden one. I don’t do well with wooden coasters.
Knott’s Berry Farm:
The Log Ride
-
I had a fun evening of viewing. I still had about 15 minutes of MURDER IN MESOPOTAMIA to watch. I remembered who the murderer was about halfway through the movie, so it was interesting seeing things play out knowing who was going to be fingered in the end.
-
Last but not least, my beloved Carousel at the Santa Monica Pier. It was built in 1922
(http://k53.pbase.com/u12/xl1ken/large/2831740.sm13lo.jpg)
-
Next I watched THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR on Blu-ray. I have always liked this movie enormously even though the climactic revelation has always been something of a letdown. All this killing for THAT? Anyway, it still works as a suspense thriller, and the cast is just fine. I had forgotten John Houseman was in it.
-
Page Ten Dance!!!
-
More than halfway through the movie, I got a call from my college roommate. His birthday is one day before mine, and we always try to find some time to catch up with one another during birthday week. We had a nice half hour conversation tonight.

What fun! Looks like it was a fabulous place!
I would have enjoyed the State Fair so much more if everyone still dressed like that.
-
I finished the evening with PROJECT RUNWAY. I agreed with who went home, but I definitely did NOT agree with the winning design(s). A couple of the middle teams got ROBBED!
-
I ended my evening watching some numbers and bonus features from the ZIEGFELD GIRL DVD. Hadn't watched it in quite a while, and I was surprised that ZIEGFELD GIRL didn't look any better than it did. It's sharp enough and contrast was fine, but there were lots of white speckles and small scratches.
-
So...
After basically lazing around my brother's apartment in front of his huge Sony TV all day, I finally headed out somewhere to grab a bite to eat. My brother suggested I give Bombay Cafe (http://www.aaoji.com/) a try. So, I did.
It's one of those bare bones, strip mall operations. Truly no frills. However, like a lot of no-frills, bare bones places, the food was actually quite good. They do serve a la carte items, but most everyone is there for the all-you-can-eat buffet: appetizers, four vegetarian dishes, four non-vegetarian dishes, naan, condiments, salads, and desserts....
All for just $7.00!
It's actually $7.99, but if you pay cash, you get a $0.99 discount. And during the week - Monday thru Thursday - it's only $5.99/5.00. A true bargain!
*Just a few doors down was another Indian buffet and kabob place. Sadly, when I walked by there after my dinner, there was no one in the dining room except for two women looking bored and a little sad. I think they were the servers/managers. :-\
-
With low expectations, a good thing, I'm off to watch Duplicity.
-
I do not know when my first carnival ride was, but the first that I remember was around 1969 at a carnival that was held in the parking lot of the Medford Shopping Center.
My sister, Sue, took me on the ferris wheel and bought me a matchbox car at Sears (where she worked).
-
DR MBarnum - So... If you ever find yourself in Fairfax, VA, be sure to ask me how to get to their "Little India". It appears that all the storefronts next to Bombay Cafe were Indian businesses - grocery, video and clothing stores - or Indian-owned businesses.
-
What a coincidence DR JoseP. Mustafa and I at at India Palace today. It was tasty. He told me all about his new job at Pacific Foods. He is in charge of the chickens. It is an all organic farm/food company, and organic chicken is their new thing.
Mustafa has a veterinarian degree from University of Baghdad and his specialty was poultry diseases. Never in my life did I think we would be able to find him a job that fit him so well!

Sounds like a great place for singles night!
-
I guess I'll tidy up a few computer items and then head downstairs to bed.
Good night!
-
Well, off to watch this Bollywood movie
(http://images.shopping.indiatimes.com/images/product/101833_EkJindEkJaan_mvcd_246x250.jpg)
If you watch this short clip, you will see why (only part of which is because I want that shirt the hero is wearing).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCggcps0iiU (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCggcps0iiU)
It is a Punjabi movie (so not really a Bollywood film), but it stars B rate Bollywood actor Aryan Vaid, who I have come to like (he is very gay friendly in his interviews)

Watching Miracle Mile, which I'm really enjoying for many reasons.
-
The last roller coaster I was on was the one at Camp Snoopy, INSIDE the Mall of America in Minneapolis.
I've been on that one
-
Here's the amusement park where I grew up riding rides. It isn't as big as it was when I was a kid, and we had to save it from becoming condos about 10 years ago. But it has one of the oldest wooden roller coasters still in existence

(something new I learned today!)

Ginny - I think the half time memorial is a lovely gesture from the school - I have been prayingt hat John's family finds comfort
-
Have fun, Vixmom. I get to take my daughter to Avenue Q later this year.
-
Question for those using iTunes to upload CD's and such: When you have a CD with two "albums" included (such as The Apartment/The Fortune Cookie), do you split the upload into two separate albums? (by changing titles and such). It would make for easier access I would think....
I do that
-
Mike - what good news about your friend!

Have fun, Vixmom. I get to take my daughter to Avenue Q later this year.
it's too bad we couldn't all go together!

before our afternoon of who knows what
-
Good night all!! VIBES for all good things for all of you!!

I think Box Car Willie's version is a lot better :-)
-
I found out today that I will be reading Desiderata as part of the services (there are two) on Monday.
I have eaten dinner with my parents followed by dinner with Gretchen's family both nights that I've been here. I have partaken in way too much comfort food - so much so that the comfort food has made me uncomfortable, lol. at least tomorrow night my parents have been invited to eat with Gretchen's family so I will only have to eat one dinner.
-
DR DAW, just for you
Thank you, DR Cillaliz!! :)
-
Ginny - I think the half time memorial is a lovely gesture from the school
Yes, indeed! I meant to comment on this earlier.

RE: the TOD.
I remember being a kid at either Disney World or Disneyland and going on Space Mountain. But i don't think you could see what it was and i was a bit scared.
One of my favorite coasters is here (montreal) at La Ronde. The monster. I love that one!
I remember that film It was in the Bell Telephone Pavillon right new to the Netherlands Pavillon. I can't remember what I had for dinner last night but I can remember something from 42 years ago! Ouch!!
-
And now that I've filed this week's online unemployment claim, I bid you all a lovely evening of sweet dreams! :)
-
I know. You posted that.
Ok, I just read your facebook comment and wanted to be sure you knew
-
The current Canadian 360 film currently at Epcot is different from the expo 67 version, All through there are sequences that are the same. I miss the shots going down St. Catherine Street at night time. Everything is so different all my beloved movie palaces are gone, The Loewe's, The Palace, The Capitol, The Strand (which became the Pigalle and showed French porno) and The Paris/Parisienne

And now to bed

You posted it here but didn't post it there. I was kidding with you.

Well, it tastes like ... wood to me!!
The good thing is that people get some exercice by ... holding their arms up to the sky!
I guess it's called roller coaster worshipping! ;)
Life is enough of a roller coaster ride for me, really, with or without spreading my arms up!

is short for refrigerator.
I don't know if you were kidding or not when you asked.
Well, I sure was joking even though:
I knew "fridge" for refrigerator,
AND, in slang, "frig" can mean something very specific but, this site being G rated .... while I do know this site is also "f(r)ig-friendly! ;)
Yes, "frig (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/frig)" is really not short for "refrigerator." ;)
