Title: THE TUESDAY THAT FELT LIKE A MONDAY

Well, you've read the notes, the notes felt like the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they were going to come home on a Monday, but it felt like a Tuesday and they got confused.

I don't like going back to work after having a Monday off.  I'd much rather have Friday off for the three-day weekend, but that's just me.

From yesterday:

Ben posted the link for the Archies Sugar, Sugar.

If you think about it the show was ahead of its time. Long before MTV and their music videos.

Finally gave in and joined Facebook. My friend told me I was on it. For the life of me I couldn't remember joining and finally figured out that I must have responded to a friends request to join and never did anything about it.

I've already reconnected with two old friends and one new one who knows BK and now lives in Florida. He's been on several of BK recordings.

And I decided to go through my old phone books to see who else I could see if they were out there and found a DR name in my book and forgot that I knew him by Francis all those years ago!

it will be nice to see if how many will respond to my requests

I woke up rather abruptly this morning

I had a nightmare (or an early morning-mare) Can't remember the last time I had one of those!

It involved a German Shepherd being hit by a car, Would like to know where that came from or any of the other people who populated my dream that I have never met.

I'm back at the office after a nice weekend on Long Island.

I have an appointment for a physical this morning at 11:30.

I have a meeting at the Rockefeller Foundation on Thursday from 3-5.

I'm still working on the Otto Bremer Foundation.

That is all.

I am also patiently waiting the arrival of the UPS man since I have a sneaking suspicion that he's going to bring a mountain of review items for me today. Right now, I have only THE COMPLETE MONTERY POP FESTIVAL on Criterion Blu-ray, but I'm not ready to start on those discs.

If the Paramount TV box sets come, I'll start on GHOST WHISPERER. If the Disney kung fu Blu-rays come, I'll start with HERO. If they all come, I'll do whatever comes out first (which I think is HERO and its three follow-ups).

Good morning, all! I slept very well, even with some strange dreams, and awoke at 7:20am, only to go back to bed for another hour. I am hoping I hear from George today about these damned bookcases and possibly doing the work today or tomorrow.

I may need to run to City Center today to pick up a score for FINIAN'S RAINBOW, and I'll know that soon. Beyond that, I've got OH BOY! here and some BABES IN TOYLAND work down at Toyland, so I've got things to do.

TOD: The OBC for CANDIDE, 1956. I've always wondered if any other music was recorded at the time. I still wish Goddard Lieberson had given the recording two lps so we could have had the rest of the score committed to disc by the original cast.

TOD - Having been briefly in the Recorded Books, Inc. studio, I'd like to have been there to watch Jim Dale record the Harry Potter audiobooks or to watch John McDonough record the Mitford books.  Richard and I get such a kick out of listening to them do the various voices, especially when John does the gum-cracking, capri-pants-wearing hairdresser, Fancy Skinner.  We also love it when he sings the hymns that Father Tim has selected for the various services at Lord's Chapel.

The party sounds delightful.

MINSKY'S & GAILY GAILY arrived at my house on Friday.  Lovely to have it.  MINSKY's had been on one of the cable services the night before....I remember having - still have - the GAILY GAILY LP - the main title song "Tomorrow Is My Friend' has always been a favorite song of mine.  And Beau Bridges is....Beau Bridges - and he was my favorite, until Jeff Bridges came along.

Big Brother 11

Hell's Kitchen

The season premieres of: Melrose Place and 90210.

I don't get the CW, but there is a Canadian station that is showing these 2 shows. Although on wed and thurs.

I also used to watch Melrose Place. I'll be curious to see if the new version is any good.

I watched 1 and 1/2 episodes of Here's Lucy.  I made it through the first episode MOD MOD LUCY - but could not survive LUCY THE CONCLUSION JUMPER.

A 17 year old Lucie Arnaz playing 17 year old Kim Carter is just too terrible to watch.  In the first episode, the writers had her trying to pantomime to her brother and mother what had happened to her while surfing.....and it was painful to watch her struggle.

Of course her mother had YEARS of experience before doing the same thing and was a master at comedy....so at 17 years old, it was unrealistic to expect that she could do as well....or even half as well....

I think I shall skip the rest of HERE'S LUCY season box sets until we get to the last season where we can see LUCY MEETS LUCILLE BALL - where Lucy Carter wanders onto the MAME set and meets....herself.

I thought each successive comedy series with Lucille Ball was worse than the one which preceded it. HERE'S LUCY was just awful as I recall, and, of course, the less said the better about LIFE WITH LUCY or whatever her last series was called.

The therapy session was super easy because I was basically pain free, so I got a deep tissue massage and some stretching and that was all. However, I go back next week, I suspect for my last session, I think just to make sure the "cure" is continuing.

That happened to my sister's boyfriend with Amazon.co.uk.  They sent the wrong item, they re-sent the correct item and he got to keep the wrong item...which actually was something that he was thinking about getting, anyway.  It was either a CD or a DVD and both items were by the same performer/group.

a show I stumbled across on A&E--Hoarders.

I am afraid to look.  I fear it may hit a little too close to home.          :P

Which part?  The "Hoar" part or the "ders" part?

I spent most of the afternoon working on HERO, the Jet Li martial arts film (the first of four martial arts movies I'll be watching and writing abouyt over the next week).

Like many movies of this type, the story is based on some Japanese legend with fact and fictional elements and martial arts staged as fantasy sequences within truly stunning visual splendor. This kind of thing is really not my cup of tea, but I can see how it would have great appeal to others.

Oh...

Greetings from Richmond!

-Yes, Richmond.  I just wanted to check in with my parents before heading back up to NYC, and also give them a chance to check back in with me.  I shall (finally) return to NYC later tonight.

I'm so glad you are feeling better, DR Matt H.

Thank you, DR Laura. For a while there, I was beginning to think I'd never be able to escape those constant aches and the persistent throbbing. Some stiffness is still present and will take time to work itself out of the muscles and nerves, but when asked today to rate my level of discomfort on a scale of 0-10, I could say 1 with such glee. (Last week it was a 6.)

Good news and good luck, Matt!!

The therapy session was super easy because I was basically pain free, so I got a deep tissue massage and some stretching and that was all. However, I go back next week, I suspect for my last session, I think just to make sure the "cure" is continuing.

If I were you and massages were part of my physical therapy regimen, I would try to continue those as long as possible. ;)

My music from 12TH NIGHT has been delayed again.  May ship in October....they wanted to know if I want to cancel my order.

NO - I will wait - you have my money.  Send my CD.

However...

According to the band's website, All About HEM (http://www.allabouthem.com/disc/twelfthnight.htm), any pre-ordered CDs will be autographed "By who, I don't yet know, but presumably at least the songwriters, except obviously not Shakespeare!".

There's also lots of other information about the music and the recording session on the site too.

You can also see the cover artwork HERE (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/allabouthem/disc/twelfthnight.jpg).

I loved that line in the season finale....Castle and the detective are arguing over his "having people" with connections to a mob family.   The detective says, "Why does this sound like a Mamet play"?  Castle protests that his connections are real, and then his face brightens and he exclaims with delight, "I keep fogetting that you read plays!"

It tickles me every time I see it.

BK, do you seriously think that your future neighbors to be, actually instructed the construction crew of their new house to do as much as possible to drive the neighbors crazy?  If I was having a house built by a professional construction company, I would assume (yes, an ass out of me) that they would conduct themselves in such a way so as to disturbe the neighbors as little as possible.  Maybe that makes me naive.
Title: Re: THE TUESDAY THAT FELT LIKE A MONDAY
Post by: bk on September 08, 2009, 03:30:28 PM
Well, they don't care much about the neighbors, that much I can tell you.  The buck has to stop somewhere, I think, and if I were having this work be done I would have instructed the crew to do what was necessary to keep at least the talking level down, and I would NOT let them work on Saturdays or holidays, even if it meant I got into the house a few weeks later.  I would also have introduced myself to the neighbors and apologized in advance for any disturbance.  I would not have had heavy trucks trampling on their lawns and breaking sprinkler heads and sprinkler pipes, and, when presented with the bill for fixing same, I would not have taken seven weeks to pay them.  But that's just me.

That is all.

No. But I should be back in less than 12 hours from now.

I watched MAMMA MIA yesterday.  It was a very strange movie.  I didn't hate it or anything - it was just weird.

You're invited to watch it any time with me, DR TCB.  It ain't great film-making, but, it sure is fun.

DR JMK might it have been "Island at War"?

I take it back, I'm looking for a documentary not a fictionalized account.

Unless you really have something against dramatized versions, ISLAND AT WAR is a beautifully told story of the occupation, and was on Masterpiece Theatre.

It's a process that takes a long time, Cillaliz. Take time to remember the good times you had.

Thanks, I know it does. I'm ok.

The person said it was on Masterpiece Theater & I can't find a documentary there, maybe she meant ISLAND AT WAR.  I will add it to my NetFlix queue.  Thank you.

While I was searching for the documentary I came across FOYLE'S WAR and also added the series to my queue.

I have to wait for DR JMK's response.  In the meantime I suggest reading "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie".  I really dislike the title of the book, that is until I read the book & realize how appropriate it is.  The disgusting sounding pie refers to one of the better dishes they had to eat during the occupation. :P

As for the Topic of the Day...

Classical: Glenn Gould recording Bach's "Goldberg Variations" - the first time - as well as the post-production editing sessions. -Just to see how idiosyncratic he really was.

Jazz: Any of the Ella Fitzgerald "Songbook" sessions. -Especially the ones where she would purposely make a mistake in order to put the band into overtime in order to help out one of the players financially.

Cast Album: For sentimental reasons: Sunday in the Park with George -Also just to see how manic Mandy Patinkin reportedly was during the session - especially during "Putting It Together".

Yes, it's a Kritzerland release, and yes, we'll be offering signed copies at no extra charge.

Ya-hooo!

Don't celebrate prematurely, DR TCB.  Just because they might be signed doesn't mean that a phone number will necessarily be included.

Archerd hosted a short segment on an old game show called THE MOVIE GAME....first hosted by Sonny Fox and then by Larry Blyden.  It was a pretty useless show, but it was fun to see some of the old stars who had completely forgotten some of the movies they did.....

Earl Holliman and Burt Reynolds were great players.  Vera Miles said on that show that on one Friday she was cast in HOUSE OF WAX, she came to work on Monday, and Phyllis Kirk was in it....

When I went back downstairs, I finished the episode of LEVERAGE I had started. It was a very exciting and involving one involving a bank robbery that happened while the team was inside doing their own mission. The wonderful writing allowed them to help the people they were trying to help as well as the family who was robbing the bank because the wife was being held hostage. An excellent episode.

I watched that show every chance I could. I remember one round was about movie props, and they pulled out the prop Oscar that Judy Garland used in A STAR IS BORN.

Next I pulled another Blu-ray off my unwatched shelf - THE USUAL SUSPECTS. I had read terrible things about the transfer, but I found it just fine. True, the disc is as barebones as they come, so I'll have to keep the Collector's Edition DVD set for the bonus features and commentary, but for a low budget film (and being one of the early Blu-ray transfers), it looked as good or better than I was expecting, and the DTS-HD MA sound was a definite plus.

I ended my evening by watching Helen Mirren's HBO film ELIZABETH I (Part I).

I had been channel flipping and flipped on Cate Blanchette's ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE (which I found a very lacking film), so my appetite was whette to watch something better. I would have watched the Glenda Jackson ELIZABETH R, but my friend Gregg is borrowing it at the moment.

Jane, I'm sorry, I simply can't remember the name.  I don't think it was ISLAND AT WAR.  Unfortunately I no longer have access to DVD Talk's database so can't look it up.  I'll try to remember.  I do remember it had someone fairly well known in it, and as soon as I remember who that is, I can look up their credits on IMDb and hopefully recreate it from that.  I do remember that one of the main characters was the doctor of the island, whose daughter was part of the resistance.  The doctor was forced to become part of the liaison group between the Islanders and the Nazis.

It was ENEMY AT THE DOOR, and it did indeed run for two seasons.  Here's my review:

MattH and Druxy will probably concur that when you review so many things (I did close to 600 reviews for DVDTalk in just a little over two years, as well as a score or more for Home Theater Forum in just the few months I helped out there), it's really hard sometimes to remember specifics.

I have just seen DISTRICT 9.  Quite a lot to think about.  BK should be warned however, like THE HANGOVER, this movie contains unseemly bodily functions.
This is probably the most original film I will see all year.

Watched the premier of the new version of MELROSE PLACE and rather liked it, particularly as they played a song from the Bollywood movie JAB WE MET in a scene at a party.

Nice cast and some of the characters were interesting...one guy is the spitting image of a young Kent McCord.

DR JRand, I couldn't figure out which actress was Ashlee Simpson. I guess I don't know who she is, although I have certainly heard the name before.
