Title: PROBABLY
Post by: bk on October 05, 2009, 12:22:50 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were probably notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they probably will one of these days.  Probably.

Title: Re: PROBABLY

And here is our new Kritzerland release - you'll see why I feel it is somewhat historic.  You know the routine - $19.98 plus 3.75 shipping paid via paypal to kritzerland at adelphia dot net.

THE EARLY, FUNNY ONES

Kritzerland is proud to present its newest limited edition release, two world-premiere releases on one CD – the original scores for two classic early Woody Allen films!

BANANAS Music Composed and Conducted by Marvin Hamlisch

and

EVERYTHING YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT SEX *BUT WERE AFRAID TO ASK Music Composed and Conducted by Mundell Lowe

Woody Allen’s Bananas was his second film as a director (following Take The Money and Run – and discounting What’s Up, Tiger Lily, a Japanese film for which he provided his own hilarious plot and dialogue).   While he was still finding his footing as a director, Bananas had one huge laugh after another, literally every couple of minutes.  In both dialogue and physical comedy Allen was already proving himself a unique comic genius of a filmmaker.   To score his film he turned to Marvin Hamlisch, who’d provided the score to Take The Money and Run.  Hamlisch, who was just starting out as a film composer (he’d only done Run and The Swimmer), turned in a fantastic score that perfectly fit Allen’s humor.  Starting with the main title, with its infectious song “Quiero La Noche,” the score is chockfull of catchy tunes in a variety of styles ranging from a beautiful love theme to action music to music that’s simply, well – Bananas.  It’s a great score from start to finish.

Allen’s followup to Bananas was Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex *But Were Afraid To Ask, which was based (not really) on the best-selling non-fiction book by Dr. David Reuben.  Allen simply took chapter titles from the book and wrote a series of sketches based on those titles, and had his comic way with them.   Some of the material ranks with Allen’s funniest, especially the opening segment, “Do Aphrodisiacs Work” with Allen as a court fool telling awful jokes and trying to get into the Queen’s chastity belt after giving her a strong love potion, as well as segments about a giant breast run amok, and Allen as a reluctant sperm. The score to Sex was written by Mundell Lowe, a jazzman and a fantastic guitar player who’d worked with Billie Holiday, Lester Young, Charlie Parker and a whole slew of other jazz greats.  His films include Satan In High Heels, Tom Laughlin’s Billy Jack, and TV shows like The Wild, Wild West, Hawaii Five-O, and Starsky and Hutch.  From the jazzy baroque stylings of “Do Aphrodisiacs Work” to the cool sounds of “Do Some Women Have Trouble Reaching Orgasm” to the classic horror music of “Are The Findings of Doctors And Clinics Who Do Sexual Research Accurate?” to the romantic music of “What Is Sodomy,” Lowe’s music is really outstanding and captures all the moods and styles of the film – it’s a terrific score.  Sex would be the last original score to a Woody Allen film until 2007’s Cassandra’s Dream.

Both scores have been mastered from the original materials – Bananas from the four-track session tapes, and Sex from the original master tapes that were prepared for an LP release that never happened.  Both sound great.  Additionally, as a bonus track we offer the “Main Title” music for Woody Allen’s Sleeper, a great rendition of “’Tain’t Nobody’s Bizness If I Do” played by Woody and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.  There are also two additional bonus tracks – the original film version of the Bananas “Main Title” (which has sound effects not present on the session tapes), and a demo version of the love theme, “‘Cause I Believe In Loving.”

So, relive the sheer lunacy that was Woody Allen in the early, funny ones, with two great scores on one great CD.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98 plus shipping.

CDs will ship by the third week of November – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).  To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

I feel bad for little (I hope little) Kelly and laughed anyway. :)

We watched MEDIUM & think Sofia Vassilieva(Ariel) gave an excellent performance.  I agree with Matt H the ending was a bit weak, more in that a certain question was not asked of Ariel.

We also watched MODERN FAMILY & laughed a lot .  This made me very happy since I liked the first episode much more than Keith had.

that sounds great because Bananas has a really great score. Now I have a couple of questions.

!) In Everything You Always Wanted....There was a sequence where Allen and Lousie Lasser played spiders doing a mating ritual and in the end Lasser kills Allen at the end of the ritual. The sequence was cut after a couple of previews.

Was it scored and will be included on the cd?

2) Don't know why I remember this, but Hamlisch was on some show where he talked about scoring the picture. He mentions that he wrote two different music underscores for the same scene. Any chance they both are on the cd to be?  I would have to watch the movie to tell you which scene it was. I believe one was slow and the one that was used was uptempo and part of it or he whole thing took place in his apartment.

Good morning, all! I will spend a good deal of today at the St James Theatre, with a sound check this morning and runthru of Act One this afternoon. Hopefully, this morning we will hear the fixes I made yesterday and orchestra cues that were not copied by Friday, one of them mine. Before running to the theatre, I need to make three stops, one at Staples to photocopy the fixes I made yesterday for the Bows and Exit Music, the bank, and a drug store.

I opened the beautifully wrapped package from the super's grandson, and it contained two books published in Serbia and translated into English, THE LEGENDS OF VRSAC by Dusan Belca (Vrsac is Dragan's home town) and THE MAGIC OF BELGRADE by Momo Kapor, which appears to be a collection of character sketches. It was very kind of him and I wrote him that I would read them before he came backto visit his family so that I could ask him questions.

DR vixmom, I believe I recommended WERE THE WORLD MINE to you. Charlotte and I liked it very much.

The wife and I went to see THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE at Austin's ZACH Theatre yesterday.

It's a very cute show; good cast.

They brought in some "civilians," who had done well in real spelling bees, to fill out the competition.  Bookwise, they have to be eliminated by the end of Act I.

Unfortunately, one little girl was so good that she kept spelling the words correctly, so I'm sure that the first act went on a bit longer than usual.

Why didn't I realize that FINIAN'S RAINBOW was playing the St. James? I thought it'd be crammed in one of the Roundabout's theaters. Makes me want to see it all the more.

I haven't watched BANANAS in such a long time. If I find some time today (during my day off), I might pull that off the shelf (I have all of Woody's films through SMALL TIME CROOKS. Then I kind of gave up on him.

Another TOD could be what is your favorite segment of EVERYTHING YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT SEX. My favorite would be the Gene Wilder sequence.

I also love the commercial with the hair tonic and those two hunks making out.

Yes, I am taking a day off today. It could be my last for quite a while. This week from Fox alone I'm expecting BONES - Season 4, MIRACLE ON 34th STREET (1947), MIRACLE ON 34th STREET (1994), and HOME ALONE 2, all on Blu-ray. Of course, BONES and the original MIRACLE ON 34th STREET are the ones I'm really looking forward to seeing. The remake of MIRACLE doesn't have the charm of the original, and HOME ALONE 2 just rehashes the first with new pratfalls for the villains but that's all.

I am keeping my fingers crossed about getting the Blu-ray of THE WIZARD OF OZ today. A friend suggested I wouldn't get it until tomorrow, and if that happens, I will be SORELY upset. But I continue to hope....

As for the TOD suggested by DR JRand.

My favorite DeMille picture would probably be THE SIGN OF THE CROSS though THE TEN COMMANDMENTS is certainly a spectacle and good for some campy laughs now.

Monday morning greetings!  Richard and I are taking it easy this morning after his exhausting weekend of pastoral work and my slightly-less-exhausting weekend of Middfest volunteering.  We were all home by 4pm yesterday and just kind of vegged throughout the evening.  Rob went to his EMT class this morning, found a notice that it was cancelled for today, went on an errand, and just called to tell us that his car won't start.  He's calling AAA and will let us know when they get him and his car back here to town.

Posted this to ATC, but I don't think anyone there knows the song it's parodying, The King of Wishful Thinking, so i thought I'd try it here, too, in part so that it's on the net for posterity, or as long as HHW is googlable.  :)

(Based on the reviews and chatter for Carrie Fisher's show WISHFUL DRINKING - I'm not seeing it until tomorrow)

THE KA-CHING OF WISHFUL DRINKING - a parody of THE KING OF WISHFUL THINKING

Here's the REAL song, if anyone wants to sing along: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ry4iwzS4Na0

Remember when a hundred and ten
Was only something in the shade
Now that’s the price without any ice
Because attendance must be paid

When I read New Yorker’s Talk of the Town
It’s C-Carrie Fisher by herself

I worked overtime at my low wage
Spent my savings without thinking
‘Cause it’s Princess Leia on the stage
That’s the ka-ching of “Wishful Drinking”

That's the ka-ching of "Wishful Drinking"

I don’t choose to read her reviews
They’ll prob’ly tell me way too much
They’ll give away the quips that she’ll say
‘Bout Harrison and Mark and such

Since she has left a hole in my wallet
I’ve somehow got to fool myself

That the hundred ten plus service charge
That I shelled out without blinking
Doesn’t make the tension loom so large
I hocked my bling for “Wishful Drinking”

(repeat above)

I’ll get over it I know I will

Should I have spent the dough on Jackman and Craig
Or maybe Catherine Zeta Jones

Will the audience be hip and glam
That’d help if the show is stinking
Lord let Rosie sit near where I am
Will I see Sting at “Wishful Drinking”
Or Larry King at “Wishful Drinking”

I’ll get over it, won't kvetch and cuss
She has a place in my heart
But lord I spent a hundred plus
I hope there’s zing to “Wishful Drinking”

(to fade-out)

I’ll get over it, I know I will
I’ll pretend there’s a cast of thirty
And I’ll miss Catherine Zeta Jones
To see this thing called “Wishful Drinking”

I've seen Memphis (a new Broadway show),  and Kiss of the Spider Woman (an NYU student production), as well as a few NYMF shows:  Max Understood, Fantasy Football, and My Scary Girl.

I love NYMF marathons.  I do not love killing time between the shows.

If you are in NY, and don't have other plans for tonight yet, I highly recommend you go see the Steinhardt production of Kiss of the Spider Woman at the Frederick Loewe Theater at NYU.  Tonight is the final performance.  I go to their shows every year - they are always wonderful.  KOTSW is a difficult show to stage; it's such a conceptual musical, and it's not easy to stage a show that takes place within a prison cell, but breaks into recollections of musical numbers from various fictitious movies.  They did an inspired job putting it all together.  Tonight is industry night, so anyone with a union card, AEA, 802, etc, can get in for free.  Otherwise, it's $20.  But do call them for a reservation.  They've been selling out.

that sounds great because Bananas has a really great score.

There were a few extra bits on the tapes for Bananas, but none worth putting on because they're all too similar to what was used in the film.  There are two bonus tracks on Bananas - the main title in mono as presented in the film itself (gunshots were added in post production - not on the session tapes), and a demo version of the song with Hamlisch singing, which is charming.  There were no alternately scored scene compositions that we heard.

Oops, and no, we had no music for the cut scene from Sex.  But we didn't have session tapes for that score, we had an album master tape prepared for an album that never happened.  That was assembled in a completely odd way with cues edited together in ways that made no sense, mixing up music from different segments.  I pulled all that apart, put them in the right order and it plays much better now.  Those were the movies I've been watching in the bedroom every night, so it's always nice to go to sleep with a smile on your face, and given that no one is in the bed with me, that's the ONLY way I'm getting a smile on my face.

Oh, and I'm up.  I slept until nine and was having one of the all-time weirdest dreams ever - I was with John Kirby in his car, and we were going somewhere for lunch.  I haven't seen John in years and have not had him on my mind so why he was in this dream I have no idea.  We picked up a few ladies at Hollywood Blvd. near Laurel Canyon.  They had to come down a lot of steps.  I made a comment about it.  John pointed out where a couple of semi-celebs lived while the ladies were coming down the stairs.  I also asked about John's father, actor Bruce Kirby and John said he was still alive and was able to count backwards to 0 although he occasionally went past 0.  Dreams are weird, aren't they?  Then suddenly instead of being in a restaurant, we were in that upstairs place, which I think was an office where the gals worked.  We chatted and then suddenly I noticed they all had sandwiches.  I saw the food on the table, so I got a piece of rye bread (one slice - and this I know is because I had rye bread with my soup late last night) and left it on the food table, while, for some reason, I went into another room where they had books.  I ended up looking at some interesting theater book that had come from a public library.  Then I came out of the room to make my sandwich.  The food was gone, the ladies were gone, and John was gone - there were two other ladies sitting there.  And then I woke up.

We watched MEDIUM & think Sofia Vassilieva(Ariel) gave an excellent performance.  I agree with Matt H the ending was a bit weak, more in that a certain question was not asked of Ariel.

I don't remember it as freshly now. But I thought they jumped a bit from Lee picking up ariel at school. There was something there that did not make perfect sense to me.

I got at the end what they were trying to do. But sometimes it feels to me like the writers think we are so smart that they can skip scenes and we will just pick it up.

Posted this to ATC, but I don't think anyone there knows the song it's parodying, The King of Wishful Thinking, so i thought I'd try it here, too, in part so that it's on the net for posterity, or as long as HHW is googlable.  :)

(Based on the reviews and chatter for Carrie Fisher's show WISHFUL DRINKING - I'm not seeing it until tomorrow)

THE KA-CHING OF WISHFUL DRINKING - a parody of THE KING OF WISHFUL THINKING

Here's the REAL song, if anyone wants to sing along: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ry4iwzS4Na0

Remember when a hundred and ten
Was only something in the shade
Now that’s the price without any ice
Because attendance must be paid

When I read New Yorker’s Talk of the Town
It’s C-Carrie Fisher by herself

I worked overtime at my low wage
Spent my savings without thinking
‘Cause it’s Princess Leia on the stage
That’s the ka-ching of “Wishful Drinking”

That's the ka-ching of "Wishful Drinking"

I don’t choose to read her reviews
They’ll prob’ly tell me way too much
They’ll give away the quips that she’ll say
‘Bout Harrison and Mark and such

Since she has left a hole in my wallet
I’ve somehow got to fool myself

That the hundred ten plus service charge
That I shelled out without blinking
Doesn’t make the tension loom so large
I hocked my bling for “Wishful Drinking”

(repeat above)

I’ll get over it I know I will

Should I have spent the dough on Jackman and Craig
Or maybe Catherine Zeta Jones

Will the audience be hip and glam
That’d help if the show is stinking
Lord let Rosie sit near where I am
Will I see Sting at “Wishful Drinking”
Or Larry King at “Wishful Drinking”

I’ll get over it, won't kvetch and cuss
She has a place in my heart
But lord I spent a hundred plus
I hope there’s zing to “Wishful Drinking”

(to fade-out)

I’ll get over it, I know I will
I’ll pretend there’s a cast of thirty
And I’ll miss Catherine Zeta Jones
To see this thing called “Wishful Drinking”

Very funny!!  I loved Go West when I was younger...but I still like a couple of their songs. :)

As for the set, it's a BEAUTIFUL box set with the various bonus items placed inside so neatly and compactly. Its beauty was quite staggering to me, and I'm so glad I opted for it rather than the Target or Wal-Mart variations on the disc.

Before I went to lucn (and before OZ arrived), I watched last night's BROTHERS & SISTERS. I was a bit annoyed at Kitty for not just coming out and telling HER HUSBAND about her illness instead of biting her lip and letting him think only of himself. Very melodramatic, not much like real life, or at least not like it would have been if I were in her position and my spouse needed to be told about a life-threatening illness.

I did love the Kevin/Scotty/Nora scenes.

I also watched last night's THREE RIVERS. It's not a star vehicle, much to my surprise. There's a definite GREY'S ANATOMY vibe to the show, and I did get involved in the cases and wanted to see how they resolved. I did shed a few tears by the end of the hour, so I'll be continuing to watch the show.

I was also delighted to see that it's available on HD On Demand, so when football or golf runs over and the show gets cut off from recording, I can still get the full episode in HD On Demand. Great!

When I got in from lunch, I immediately put in THE WIZARD OF OZ and watched it in high definition. What a beauty! I was thrilled beyond description with the color values and presentation. The Dolby TrueHD surround sound was the best I've EVER heard the movie register in my system.

As for the most impressive HD scenes, I'd say the colors in the Munchkins' costumes were staggering; they never stood out so much for me before.

I was very impressed with how much detail I could see in the Tin Man's rusty costume (before he gets polished up in the Emerald City). I had never noticed things like flowers and vines on the fence in the Scarecrow's cornfield.

The scene that most jumped out at me as truly impressive dimensionally was when the three friends are overlooking the Witch's castle. The combination of the dusky lighting, the shadows around them in the rocky terrain just made them jump off the screen in such sharpness and utter clarity.

I spent a very satisfying afternoon Saturday watching the national road company presentation (or whatever it's officially called -- the show starts its actual tour next year) of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “South Pacific” revival.  There are many wonderful things in this show in addition to the fantastic score and they greatly restored my initial disappointment upon discovering that Rodney Gilfry would not be performing Emile deBecque in the matinee.  Indeed, the Playbill insert was a complete pre-printed cast list of everyone playing their roles except Mr. Gilfry whose understudy – one Christopher Carl – would perform Emile.

This, of course, should have been anticipated by me.  I suppose there are performers who don’t do matinees for various/sundried reasons and are contractually exempted from them.  That doesn’t mean the theater is going to let the public know, however, and when “this public” reserved his seat, it was with the express anticipation of seeing Mr. Gilfry sing Emile.

Sigh.

So, how did “this public” overcome his disappointment?  Well, it happened rather suddenly when the 25-piece orchestra began playing the restored Overture (as with all the music, they used original orchestrations from the 1949 production) and swept me into another world.  Never mind that one of the ladies three people to the left of me was yakking and laughing about some thing or other…I glared…it was noticed and it quieted.  Upon turning my attention to the Overture again, another gale of laughter erupted and I turned to the lady next to me and asked, politely, whether her friend was going to be talking and laughing throughout the “rest” of the performance.  She shook her head no.  I heard no more laughing/yakking after that.

This performance is at the Golden Gate Theater which is perched rather oddly “at” Market Street in the city of San Francisco but which has an address of “6th and Turk”…which is not a good neighborhood being part of the Tenderloin District (think XXXX adult clubs and video dives, winos and derelicts, etc., etc.)  Happily, that is not true of the Market Street site of the theater itself, but they so closely abut the Tenderloin that one “feels” the seediness all the same.

The Golden Gate Theater was the site of one of the happier theatrical events I’ve experienced over the years – and that was a road company of “Annie” a few years ago.  It’s an historic theater, as are all the San Francisco houses, but it’s not the best by a mile.  It has been a long time since the Golden Gate was given a facelift.  And the seats might have fitted the frames of 1950s patrons, but most of us were in close contact with one another…so much so that it was quite simple to read the body language of persons on either side of you.   The honor for best theater in San Francisco, IMO, goes to the Curran Theater where I saw “Wicked” and “Dame Edna” and “La Boheme” and “Barbara Cook.”  It is also where I plan to see a production of “The 39 Steps” during the Christmas holidays.

Back to “South Pacific”, the sound presentation was lacking.  I’m not sure why, either.  You can do wonderful things these days with speaker placements and baffling and all sorts of other stuff.  There’s no reason why prime Loge seats should be getting subdued sound and, most puzzling of all, some weird feedback from time to time that garbled the spoken word.

Production-wise, the set is simple and dazzling.  The design is truly wonderful with venetian-styled blinds done with what appeared to be wooden slats used to create the deBecque villa in one scene, Bloody Mary’s hut in another, and to create depth for other scenes.  The lighting was superb.

I’ve read and heard a lot of criticism of the movie “South Pacific” over the years.  After seeing this show – presented the way it was presented originally in 1949 – I have to say “Hah!” and “Hah!” again at the boo birds.    There are problems in the show that were corrected in the movie.  And there were things right in the show that were overproduced in the movie.  So “Hah!”  Take them apples, Mr. Goldstone.

One of the primary things I’ve read/heard about “South Pacific”, the show, was how perfectly it was cast and about “South Pacific”, the movie, was how awfully it was cast.   Mary Martin was a superstar on Broadway.  There’s no way she could have missed as Nellie Forbush.  No way at all.   For that time, it was quite “the” part for any great actress/singer – a female officer (nurse) on an island in the Pacific during the war.  Nellie is a naïf, she’s from Arkansas and very much a child of her parents, her community and her part of the United States.  Yes, this show deals with racism, too, and does it very well.  But the show’s credibility has to rely on some sort of attraction between Nellie and Emile deBecque, the French planter who is much older than Nellie.

Fortunately for Emile, he has some AMAZING songs to sing to her.  The music provides the romance even if the physical reality/character development between the two cannot quite make you believe in the relationship.   Mary Martin and Ezio Pinza were well-matched…and in a show, good performances and great music can make you believe whatever the performers want you to believe.  But the truth about this show is that the character of Emile deBecque isn’t very well-defined, isn’t very much-engaged and requires little more than a great voice and, hopefully, a masculine physicality that seems reasonably feasible for an attractive young woman to be attracted to.  Much is revealed in his story about his youth, his life on the island, and his views on life and how time is not to be wasted.  He believes that all it takes is one look…across a crowded room…and somehow you know.  This is the kind of enchantment that can be wrought upon a stage.  Ezio Pinza, the original Emile – were he alive today and auditioning for this show – would not be cast, I don’t believe.   There was a time when actors like Pinza, Paul Douglas, Broderick Crawford, Edward Arnold and the like would be cast as viable suitors for beautiful women in shows and films.  Today, it would be like casting Dustin Hoffman opposite – for grins – Drew Barrymore as a romantic suitor.  The audience might accept the premise if it was a well-done comedy, but would anyone accept it as a romantic drama?

Christopher Carl was an acceptable substitute for Emile, all things considered.  His voice is magnificent and he cut a very middle-aged manly figure…very appropriate for Emile.  His performance, though, was a bit wooden and his blocking was uninspired.  In fact, Nellie’s blocking in scenes with him seemed equally uninspired.  Perhaps it looked great from the Orchestra Seats?   I was in a Loge Seat, with four women to the left of me and a solitary, quiet, thin Asian man with opera glasses on my right.  He was given to humming along from time to time and I never could quite figure out who he was singling out with those opera glasses.  Our seats were quite good and everyone on stage was easily seen and heard.

Nellie was performed by Carmen Cusack.  She has a great figure, she’s blonde, and her singing voice is a dream.  She’s also from Texas.  Her accent was so thick, you’d really believe Nellie was a hick from the sticks.   That said, the role of Nellie is really one of a naïve young woman with no experience in life.  She’s corny by today’s standards.   In the film, Mitzi Gaynor nailed her solid.  On stage, Cusack’s Nellie is plucky, pert and pretty.  From time to time, her delivery was a bit over-the-top, and I expected a little less “theatricality”.  Both leads sang beautifully, but   I was disappointed, and a little annoyed, to find I was unmoved (and a little bit bored once) by them together. I was rather sad at that.  Still am.

Where the show bursts forth with mega-wattage energy is from the casting of Bloody Mary and Luther Billis and the SeaBees and, not the least among them, Lt. Joe Cable.

Bloody Mary was wonderful.  Actress Keala Settle, who is built wide and low and moves like a Sumo wrestler, was terrific as Mary.  She has a low, guttural growl as Mary and her oft-expressed “You li-i-i-i-IKE?” engaged the audience at every turn.   Luther Billis was less a blustering type as portrayed by Matthew Saldivar than was Ray Walston’s (in the movie) or the guy who played the role in the Broadway revival (whom I saw on the Tony telecast).  Billis and his SeaBees picked the energy up dramatically from the opening (and a bit lethargic) scene on deBecque’s terrace.  The SeaBees’ voices were extremely well cast and their singing was always joyous.

When Anderson Davis made his entrance as Lt. Joe Cable, there were a few gasps from the ladies.  He emerged from downstage.  Wearing his aviator’s cap and sunglasses, a leather flight jacket, a pistol on his right hip and a knife on his left and his khakis bloused and tucked into brown laced-up boots, Cable took the stage with a swagger that had the guy next to me noticeably tensing up.   When Bloody Mary laid eyes on him and stealthily plodded over to size him up, you sensed something special was going to happen.  When she growled, “You saxy man”, the audience erupted in laughter and applause.  A great deal of tension was released and Joe Cable was an instant “star” in this production.  His tenor is superb.

Director Bartlett Sher did so many things right in this production that it seems nitpickish to quibble over things that weren’t done.   Emile has relatively little stage movement when he needs some.  Perhaps Gilfry has the role down pat, but his understudy was wooden.  Cable is left to stand and glower or hold an attractive pose (eye candy, I guess) under a spot while others are talking.  The tableaux effect came to mind and it might have been very effective from the Orchestra Seats, but looked a bit under-directed from the Loge.  I’d have preferred a more natural blocking of Cable actually facing others who are talking and “listening” to them.

Things that worked better in the show than in the movie are the wonderful juxtaposition of scenes that take place concurrently around the Thanksgiving follies.  Joe Cable’s bout with malaria and spending weeks in hospital are missing in the film.  Of course, we only see him when he has left the hospital looking for Billis backstage at the follies…he wants Billis to get a boat and take him to Bali Hai to be reunited with Liat.  Meantime, Bloody Mary turns up with Liat and threatens him that Liat will marry a rich planter if Cable does not.  Alternately during these scenes, we see deBecque show up and have a scene with Billis and with Cable; Cable has a scene with Nellie, and later he’s with deBecque.  In each occurrence, IMO, Cable’s energy elevates the performances of deBecque and Nellie to professional standards I’d hoped they’d carry throughout the show (and it makes me now wonder if the two leads don’t get along).  I’ve read reviews that indicate that Gilfry and Cusack are magical together.   It may be, however, that Carl simply doesn’t get enough time to settle into the role before Gilfry reclaims it.

All of that Act II sequence is wonderfully staged and the show is strengthened by it.  By the time deBecque and Cable are off stage and you hear their voices over the radio from their mission locations, the dramatic tone of the play becomes very serious.  The last transmission is heartbreaking in its effect, primarily because of the impact the character has on the show.  There is this wonderful transition from a beach scene, where everyone is getting ready to deploy, to the final scene at de Becque’s plantation villa.  You see Marines and nurses and SeaBees falling into formation and singing a slow, staccato-like version of “Honey Bun” as they mark time in a march step.  During this the blinds come down, the lighting changes and Nellie, Ngana and Jerome (Emil’s two children) come on stage for the final scene.

When you know what to expect during the scene, you hope for perfect timing.  As Nellie is singing with the children, Emile appears on his terrace.  I think Mr. Carl came on a bit too soon.  The impact wasn’t “there”, for me, so that bit of magic was lost.

But the score is totally the thing, and I cannot imagine it being served any better on stage than it was in this production.

What the movie did absolutely right was put Alfred Newman in charge of the scoring/adaptation.  It was phenomenal to hear the original orchestrations and then to realize how significant and expansive were the additions made by Newman and his orchestrators and, most especially, by choral master Ken Darby.  I was amazed that the song “Bali Hai” had no choral accompaniment in the show.  And I’m equally stunned at how much more effective the song is with the chorus and in the movie since Mary sings directly to Cable in the film.  In this show, Cable is off to the side while Mary is singing to everyone. Of course, a female chorus does a version when Cable and Billis on Bali Hai, but it's brief and does not have the powerful effect on the song that the movie gives it.  There were many touches that significantly enhanced the score in the movie without detracting from the quality of the originals.   This show is a very different thing from the movie.  Each has its qualities.

I’m “thinking” about seeing it one more time…with Gilfry as deBecque.

Good Afternoon! Good Evening!

As for David Letterman...

-I did end up at the first taping today, so it will be broadcast tonight. The guests were, as scheduled: Steve Martin, Lea Michele and Steve Martin and his bluegrass group. During Steve Martin's second segment, Martin Short made a surprise(?) appearance. -And I have to say it was nice to see Steve Martin being funny again. ;)

-Dave did talk about the events of the past few days... -Just watch the first 15-20 minutes of tonight's show to see how he handled everything.  -At least watch up to Steve Martin's first words.

Nothing to be embarrassed by, I didn't know "Hard Out Here for a Pimp" until it got an Oscar nomination :)
Actual it won the Oscar that year.
I hate the song and do not have it in my collection of Oscar winning songs. (I also don''t have Eminem's song)

As suspected, outside the theatre almost every major and minor news outfit was on the sidewalk asking people their opinions and reactions to David Letterman's extortion case. Well, correction, they were asking everyone what they thought about Mr. Letterman's "sexual indiscretions"...

Regardless what you may think about Letterman's morals, or lack thereof, everyone must remember that David Letterman IS the victim here. And until further evidence and testimony is put before the public, there are no other victims at this point in/and time.

*It was encouraging to see that almost everyone was waving off the cameras and microphones, although I think CNN managed to snag a "live" on. I think they started multiple takes with her. :-\

I don't think GOURMET magazine is the only magazine that is ceasing publication. I was in the doctor's office and caught the tail end of the report. They were focusing on breaking news in Florida. But I think they mentioned several different bride magazines were also hitting the sheets.

DR Ron Pulliam - Thank you for your rather thorough theatre reportage, and I really liked how you worked in your comparisons and contrasts with the film and film version of the score. And now...

-I'm sorry you didn't get to see Rod Gilfry. However, I believe his understudy was scheduled for the matinée. I sense the producers and company management are doing what they do here in NYC now: they schedule the understudies and swings to go on before they "have" to go on. Even if an actor wants to play all eight shows in a week, they are asked to sit out one or two a week in order to give the understudies a chance to go on. I guess if Rod was "above the title"...

-I love Keale Settle too!!!

-I'm glad you got to see a good Lt. Cable. The current Cable at the Beaumont is, well, "questionable". Frankly, I'm guessing that Mary Rodgers did not need to approve his casting.

-I'm curious to see how the tour staging works - or doesn't work - in certain places.  The thrust stage and the wide proscenium provide some true magic and goosebumps(!) at Lincoln Center.

Condé Nast is also shuttering three or four other magazines, two of which ate spin-offs of "Brides". These are just the latest moves in their current and ongoing restructuring.

*It was also kind of shocking - depressing - to read on Twitter that Gournet's editor, Ruth Reichl, also found out the news this morning with everyone else. They've already started packing up their offices today. :-\

It was a long day at the St James, which housed two Rodgers and Hammerstein shows, OKLAHOMA! and FLOWER DRUM SONG. The morning was really unnecessary for me because it was mostly taken up with squeezing 23 players into the orchestra pit. We had to lose two timpani to accommodate the two horn players and Josh Clayton, the string synth player, is back in the orchestra's green room with a tv monitor. The sond man also spent some time setting up mikes and having the various players run sections of the score for him. When we got back from lunch, we ran the cues we'd never played before and then ran Act one. It was a work session so we'd run a few pages of dialogue and a number, go back and work things, and continue. A lot of time was spent on the magic tricks that Og the leprechaun has to perform. some of them are very funny. It was a good day; I love David Schramm as Senator Rawkins; he reminds me a bit of Foghorn Leghorn.

1.   The 2016 Olympics in Rio will mark the first time an Olympic Games will be held on the continent of South America.  Ever.
2.   The United States of America has been host to the Olympic Games 8 times if you combine both Summer and Winter Games, which is more than any other nation

There is a video on the side of Mike’s blog which does fit the musicians beware statement.b] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZsBL4d1Eus)

Watched a rerun of the Leslie Caron interview on TCM this evening.  Her LILI and THE GLASS SLIPPER are on later tonight.  I like both of those movies.

I skipped HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER because it seemed from the promos that it was going to focus a lot on Robin, and that actress, for me, is the weak link in the group.

I also paid the extra $11 to park in the theater parking lot.

What a day.  Cason came over and we spent quite a long time addressing quite a LOT of packages, after which he printed the postage for all the single orders, which also took a very long time.  He put postage on about seventy packages but it was so late I told him to just go and that I'd finish that task, which I will tomorrow.  Cason will be back on Wednesday morning to help package - but we got everything addressed and that was the most important thing.  Then I was really hungry and went to Jerry's Deli and had my usual sandwich and fries whilst doing some work.  Then I came home and listened to the edited master for Bananas - what FUN!  This was a really hard one to put together for reasons I'll explain in the notes this week - it took him a long time to do it, but the result is brilliant, and even though I didn't mention it in the press release I printed here this morning, both scores are in stereo (the Sleeper main title is mono).  The official announcement will have the stereo news.  And now I am ready to relax.

And now, I'm off.  The library system where I work has instigated late fees for the first time in our 40-year history.  They start accruing if an item is turned in later after October 1.  I have a DVD checked out to me that my sister has and it's due today.  I have to get it from her and turn it in before the morning.  If something is turned in in a book-drop, it counts as having been returned the night before...which is a good thing. :)

Not even a bandaid.  I'm please to say I didn't need it  like I did last year.  I'm hoping that means I won't have a big bruise on my arm like I did last year.  It hurt immediately after & already feels much better.  The shot itself didn't hurt.

Had a great night of very varied viewing experiences. I began with today's soaps. THought the gay boys weren't present in either ATWT or OLTL, there was more of the Holden kidnap plot on ATWT and there was a lesbian and David Vickers Buchanan as a faux-homosexual for a little while. SOme funny stuff on the latter show with Tuc Watkins always a standout.

Next I watched the MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR film. Brendan Fraser looked wonderful with his shirt off, but that son was pretty much a turn-off and very uncharismatic. Brendan's "new" wife was no patch on Rachel Weitz, and the plot seemed rather desperately trying to invent new problems and then solve them by adding "rules" to the mythology that weren't stated beforehand. I LOATHE this kind of storytelling.

I'm sure the movie would look great on Blu-ray, but I'll never know since I have no desire to ever see it again.

After that, I pulled BANANAS off the shelf and watched it. It is still a very funny movie though some of the gags are hit and miss. And I'd rather have seen Diane Keaton in the lead rather than Louise Lasser (yes, I know they were together at the time).

The film certainly looked its age on that MGM DVD transfer. At least it WAS anamorphic.

Well tomorrow is the day I hope to finalize the big move.

I had hoped to wait to tell my 'friend" about my decision until after it was final, but he stopped by today wanting to look at more space, so I told him.  He acted a bit shocked and said "Well it is a really nice space" lol, that's not what he said when we looked at it.   He also told me any time he has tried to share office space it's been a disaster, but he was willing to give it a shot.  Glad I said no.

Anyway, I think I did the right thing talking to the building manager on Saturday.  I hope we can reach an agreement tomorrow and get a lease signed.

Wow---lots of news and great links!

Today was my first day not to have a "day job" in many months. After the Mercer film, which is STILL going on, but with my asst. editor, I went back to The Closer and after that rolled right into launching a new TNT show starring Ray Romano. We worked for several months on spots to test different marketing techniques for that show. Now that that's done, I may be down to one job a day until Closer cranks back up. So now I'm able to have a life, get some exercise, do my taxes, get teeth cleanings for all the cats as well as myself, and maybe finally get a new pair of glasses. (I've been overdue for months.) And finally, start catching up with HHW, which will include ordering the Woody Allen CD. Yay!

The Ray Romano show is still being tweaked but I think it's going to be a great show. It also stars Scott Bakula and Andre Braugher. It's funny, poignant and dark with great performances by all the guys. It's called "Men of a Certain Age". It will premiere in December when The Closer comes back for the last 3 episodes of the season. Watch for it!

I missed you guys!

A very happy birthday to former DR Jenny!

Just repeat that one tomorrow for mine, OK?  :)

Welcome back, Edi!  Romano does have a very appealing (if that's the right term) darkness in his performances.  I had to review some indie film whose name escapes me (though I remember it had a cool cameo by Richard Riehle, DS Betsy's childhood neighbor and babysitter!) where he played a suicidal jingle composer.  He was great in that.

Glad to have you back, DR Edi. Glad to know you're back with THE CLOSER, and I'll be sure to sample the new show (though Scott Bakula will be more of a lure for me than Ray Romano).

I'm also getting very excited about the upcoming trip to Wisconsin.  Callie is doing well, so there won't be problems with having the cat sitter take care of her.   We're driving through Harmony, MN and will go to the Great River Road and go to Lansing, IA before going across to Wisconsin and up to Viroqua.  The leaves should be in their prime, so it should be a lovely drive

And now I'm going to head down to bed (must do a little treadmill first; Couldn't walk today because it's been raining off and on all day long.)

I will be glad when the lease is signed.  Then I will be able to shop for a few things I need  - including something wonderful I saw on clearence over the weekend but didn't want to buy before the ink is dry.  I'm hoping it will still be there tomorrow.

Yes, it was a great show. Very funny, and a perfect balance of "uncomfortable tension", seriousness and humility.  -At least that's what I thought.  I loved when he started the series of politician jokes.

I did make the audience "pan". Just barely.  The "coming attractions" box went up just as my section of the audience was in view.  However, as the camera panned up to the balcony, I caught a very brief glimpse of me in the Audience Left side of the house, ten rows back, on the aisle.  *Just look for the "patch of dark blue". ;)

There always seems to be one episode each season which can seem like a time-killer.  However, I like them.  You get to see more "character" rather than action and plot, and, overall, it helps the pacing of the full season.  -Again, just my two cents.

*And I thought "Betts" looked stunning during the Rome sequences. Va-Va-Va Voom! Che Bella!

I found out to day that I have the option to have a medical procedure or not to have one on my leg. If I do, it may or may not alleviate the discomfort that I am having. But I don't want to have to wear a compression stocking for the rest of my life if I don't do it. The prodecure is call Endovenous Laser Treatment.

DR Michael S - Have you considering consulting an osteopath, chiropractor and/or physical therapist?  A friend  of mine who had that condition actually turned to acupuncture - along with some specialized resistance training (free weights), Pilates and diet (for weight loss) - to alleviate his pain.  It took a few months, but he's been "back to normal" for a while now.

DR elmore - That sounds like my first official day on Lestat in the Palace.  The easiest four-hour call I've ever attended. The seventh floor room had been set up the day before, but they had to do the "pit fit" that first morning.  So, the associate conductor/Key2 player, the percussionist and I just sat in the musicians' dressing room the whole morning.  On the clock too!

*Oh - Any word on the final dress rehearsal/gypsy run-thru?

I don't think GOURMET magazine is the only magazine that is ceasing publication. I was in the doctor's office and caught the tail end of the report. They were focusing on breaking news in Florida. But I think they mentioned several different bride magazines were also hitting the sheets.

The other three magazines that will be ceasing publication are "Cookie", "Modern Bride" and "Elegant Bride".  Here's the latest from The New York Times' Media Decoder (http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/10/05/conde-nast-to-close-gourmet-magazine/).

And as I heard from a friend of mine who (still) works at Condé Nast, all the affected staff will have to be out of their office by the close of business tomorrow afternoon. :-\

Oh, am I tired.  But all the single packages now have postage on them.  Whilst doing that, I listened to two other potential Kritzerland projects - one is fantastic and I may go ahead and see if we can do a deal on it, one is so outre and weird and from such a strange film I'm not sure that anyone but me would like it - and I've got it now.  Still the film has a bit of a cult following, but it's not what you would call a melodic listen.
