Title: MY HEAD IS DOING A LINDA BLAIR
Post by: bk on October 07, 2009, 12:05:11 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were doing a Linda Blair, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently doing a Linda Blair.

Hmmm...New Doctor Who logo for Matt Smith (http://www.bscreview.com/2009/10/new-doctor-who-logo-for-matt-smith/).

BBC has revealed the new logo that will accompany the new Matt Smith Doctor Who. According to the Telegraph, it’s the franchise’s eleventh logo in its 46-year history, and the first new one since 2006.

Good morning, all! I started reading Kathy Griffin's book last night and put it down shortly after midnight. I slept in an extra hour which was great, except for the fact that last night was filled with very weird dreams, several frightening and several just plain bizarre.

This morning I will run errands I have needed to do for several weeks: post office, market, Staples. I have to be to the theatre around 1 pm to find the PA with my tickets for tonight's invited dress. At 1:45 we have a dress rehearsal with the orchestra, and I will most likely sit with my friend Bruce Pomahac, who cannot come tonight. We have one final cue to hear the band play, which is the Bows music, and they will read that down at 1:30. Hopefully, I have no errors in my score for my fixes, so we'll see how it goes. Afterwards, I will hang out at the theatre in case anything needs to be done, grab some dinner, and meet Jose and my freind Matthew at the stage door around 7:30.

Yesterday's rehearsal went very well, and I hope the response tonight is very positive. I do love this show.

Beautiful car DR TCB.

Congrats to DR CILLA LIZ on her new space.

And the DR JOSE on the email.

And of course today is the day that DR ELMORE and DR JOSE have been invited to dress and see FINIAN'S RAINBOW.  I look forward to the report.

Today is also Senior Day Goodwill so I am going to go over and see if I can get one of them smoking jackets they had for $12.99 so I can use it in BLITHE SPIRIT next year.  It will be 30% off if they still have one.  They had 4 on Monday.....so we shall see.

I lasted about 30 minutes into PAGAN LOVE SONG, and then had to go.....I HAD to....most distressing, although it looked pretty good.

No, but one of our cast members has some nice beach photos being passed around backstage!

Wednesday morning greetings!  I'm having my seasonal flu shot at 10:30 this morning and then Richard, Rob, and I are going to Oxford (Ohio, not England) to see the Miami University field hockey team play OSU.  Why?  Our niece, Lauren, is an athletic training major assigned to the Miami team and we promised her we'd get to at least one of her games.  I hear she's a real whiz at ankle-taping!

The skies were cloudy and there was some spotty rain doing my walk this morning, but all of that has cleared away now, and we should have a sunny day ahead.

I am still debating with myself as to work today. If the Fox Blu-rays come in, there is no debate, and I begin immediately on them.

However, if they don't come in, then I must decide between doing MONSOON WEDDING on Blu-ray (which would be easy since it's all written up; I just have to watch the film again in HD to ascertain its video and audio quality), 'Z' on DVD, or nothing.

Or, if FLASHPOINT arrives in the mail, starting on that (which would be the most sensible decision).

I'll see what the morning brings.

Elmore, re:  dreams.   I kid you not, but you (yes, you) were the star of one of my dreams last night.  I don't remember all the details save that I had to climb to some mountaintop lair where I was supposed to retrieve something, and when I got there you were one of several people I knew.  You were most angry at how hard the place was to get to.  I do remember that much.  :)

I saw a couple of songs from BYE BYE BIRDIE on the ABC News site....I think they were on Good Morning America....Conrad isn't so hot....in Honestly Sincere....the whole thing seems to miss the mark, but it might look more exciting onstage.  Choreography is fun and I like the idea of Randolph being a big part of the number, but otherwise.....

I liked the TELEPHONE SONG more....some fun stuff with set pieces, but vocally both numbers seemed a bit week.  But then I have been listening to the OBC for almost 50 years and it is ingrained in my brain.....as is the soundtrack....a bit less.....

I've run my errands, and I need to think about a little lunch beofre I head down to the theatre. I've found my best route is to take the No 1 subway to 42nd Street, walk to Eighth Avenue, walk up Eighth to 44th Streeet and head east. The stage door is at the front of the theatre next to the entrance, so it's an easy destination.

I did not get to Staples, so perhaps I will do that tomorrow. I'm waiting to hear from my colleague Curtis on what he's doing this week. The last thing I heard was that he is on jury duty.

If you wanted to avoid the Times Square Station, you could also walk over to Central Park West, and take the C Train down to Times Square.  If you ride the back of the train, then you'd just have to walk the two blocks north underground, and the subway exit/entrance comes right out at John's Pizza right next to the St. James.  -But I think you're way is shorter.

Oy, what a morning at the local brick and mortar sheet music emporium.  I had placed a huge choral and orchestral order weeks ago, and they kept calling me saying "Everything but __________ has arrived" (a different item each time), and I kept telling them to just call me when it was all there since they're kind of out of the way to get to.  They had previously quoted me three prices on the order and we had finally settled on what we both agreed was the correct total.  So they finally called last Friday, said everything was indeed there, re-quoted me the supposedly correct price, blah, blah, blah.  Got there this morning and they first thought the whole order was NOT there.  They did finally find everything but I quickly pointed out their total was not what I had been told--it was actually $20 less!  Since I already had a check for what was supposed to have been the total, I did some extra shopping, which was fun, but they had an ancient DOS-based accounting system and the poor clerk had to really push it to its limit to get it to understand what was happening.  It actually crashed their invoice printer, LOL.

Ugh!  That Conrad is big dud!  But I still feel sorry for him with that choreography he's saddled with--it makes him come off as a complete egotistical misanthrope who would rather make love to a microphone than flirt and play with any of the pretty girls in the crowd.

And are the families really grouped up like that in those costumes at the beginning of the scene?  It looks like they are ready to play a life-sized game of Parcheesi.

Double Ugh!

One of the extra things I picked up today was a lovely arrangement of Elmer Bernstein's wonderful TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD.  I just played through it and got a little verklempt.

Is it for solo piano?

Double Ugh!

The mystery of the second WIZARD is solved--I had emailed customer service to ask where the posters were in my first set (which DAW ultimately kindly answered here), and that magically got translated in far off Uzbekistan (or wherever they are) as "send me another one."

Loads of work to do inside & out in October.  Also this is a time of year we have guests.  If I'm not around don't worry, I'm just trying to get things done, plus my body is telling me it needs a break from the computer.  Instead of sitting at the computer I'll catch the last of the sun before winter sets in.

Before lunch, I watched another NCIS episode from the fourth season box set. This was the very poignant episode where Ziva falls in love with the guy dying from radiation poisoning. A completely shocking murderer and a very sad ending.

While I ate lunch, I watched NCIS: LA from last night. It was an OK episode, as they've all been, but the show is still not must-see TV for me like CASTLE or BONES or MEDIUM. I'm getting more comfortable with the cast and their roles in the various investigations, but it's NOT appointment television for me.
Title: Re: MY HEAD IS DOING A LINDA BLAIR

Then I watched the first four episodes of FLASHPOINT from the first sason set. (All of the episodes on disc one). Of the four, I had seen one previously. I had never seen the pilot which was unusual in that the case was wrapped up with still about 15 minutes or more to go in the episode. That will never happen again, I don't think.

It's OK. Nothing can alter my opinion of Mr. Irwin. He's probably not the best choice for this role, but still, it's Bill. Conrad looks cute, sings fine and I like his Elvis dance moves, but yes---he seems totally in love with himself and the microphone, not the girls. I've seen guys who had better charisma in H.S. productions . Maybe the director's fault? The color coordinated costumes seem weird to me, too. But I still want to see it, if I get up for Larry's show.

The pilot episode also had the set's only commentary, but it was a pretty dull affair.

The episodes are, as I've said since I started watching the show, very affecting. Amazing how you can get wrapped up in these tense situations, often with good people pushed to the breaking point on the worst day of their lives, and want things to come out OK. Sometimes they do, and sometimes they don't.

Holy moley on rye what a day so far.  I was on the phone with Apple Care for over ninety minutes trying to fix my iPhone.  We finally got it working perfectly, but it required resetting everything, putting in passwords again, setting up Mobile Me almost from scratch again - at some point something went terribly wrong with my phone, probably resulting from the faulty cord from a few weeks ago, and we never fully fixed it.  Now it works perfectly and everything synchs correctly.  I lost all the photos in the phone, but that's okay - I have them in iPhoto.

I loved Bill Irwin in FOOL MOON and IN REGARD OF FLIGHT, which were fantastic shows.  I enjoyed working with him on TONIGHT AT 8:30 in 2002 and I like him personally very much. However, amazing as he is in using his own internal rhythms, I found he had a hard time with musical rhythms and singng on the beat. I wish him well as Harry MacAfee, although he wouldn't be my first choice for the role.

Even Jeff Edgerton as The Young Soldier who opens the show?

I saw a national tour featuring David Pittu and Andrea Burns which I thought was quite good.
I was familiar with the Leo Franks case from movies such as THEY WON'T FORGET (coming soon as a Warner Archive title) and tv's THE MURDER OF MARY PHAGAN.

The women who did the fundraising for it are also doing the fundraising for our new film: JEWS AND BASEBALL. Steve spent a lot of time in Marietta researching the case. His book was very controversial because he named names...lots of O.M.'s (Old Mariettans) had family members in the lynch mob!

I went to college with Steve---he was two years ahead of me but we both worked with the campus newspaper. He was a writer, naturally, and I was a photographer, which came with the perk of being able to use their darkroom whenever I liked!

I know Jeff Edgerton. . . .

I really, really liked Steve's book.  I can understand the controversy!

When you say "dark room" it that a euphemism?  ;)

We are back from a fun time at the Miami University women's field hockey game (they lost to Ohio State, 5-2  :-\) and dinner at 45 East with Lauren and her mom.  We didn't get to see Lauren tape any ankles, but saw several players leave the training room after the game with ice packs on their knees - Lauren's handiwork.  She's really pumped because for second semester she's been assigned to men's basketball, which is a pretty major sport at Miami.

GLEE was most enjoyable this evening.

I did not know that Michael Buble has a new CD - I will explore that.  In fact I have a couple of them, and enjoy them....so there....take it back, DR TCB.  Or you will be sued for libel.  I have the same lawyer that Edith Farmer Elliot used to sue Jean Ratcliffe, and you know how far that got!

I watched five more FLASHPOINT episodes making a grand total of nine episodes watched today. I could have watched one or two more, but I wanted to watch something else for a break.

That leaves me with four more to watch tomorrow plus two bonus featurettes. Should have no trouble finishing that, maybe by tomorrow afternoon.

The Vixter and her musical theatre class whent to See Bye Bye Birdie today - she was very excited becaue they are usually sitting in the rafters but today, to her delight,  she was in row G orchestra

The show was as great success in her eyes - she said that girls inthe audience were screaming like the girls on stage during Conrad's numbers - (which is enought to keep ME from going to see that show) and Conrad was Hotter than HOT!!!

This performance was apparenetly a special school performance becaue they had a talk back after the show which the Vixter was pleased and surprised to see was attended by the entire cast - stars included

Unfortunately in the excitement of it all she failed to collect the promised extra playbills for JRand

TCB I wish you many happy years with your new Elantra -  Vixdad has one in red that is 6 years old now - we have never had a moment's trouble with it excet that the paint seems to be easily marred - hoepfully it was a problem they have since corrected - we had a Hyundai Excel hatchback for 15 years before we traded it in for the Elantra and that paint job was still as beautiful on the day we gave it up as it was when we first bought it new.

Finished watching the Blu and Ray of a motion picture entitled Contact.  Not sure if I'm up for another movie and may just go get something to nosh on and listen to CDs.

One interesting thing about Bob's Big Boy - were the Big Boy burgers always as small as they are now.  Hardly a filling meal.  I cannot imagine that the two patties together are more than 2 or 3 ounces of meat, and the buns are tiny, too.  It took me about two minutes to finish mine, and David ate his in less time.  I had a little teeny tiny salad with it and onion rings instead of fries - all five of them - they were quite good.  We were still so hungry that we split another Big Boy and we were still hungry after that.

I think we had a very successful dress rehearsal, but I'm cautious because it's an audience of friends and family. My friend Matthew had seen it at Encores! and thought this was a vast improvement, as do I. He was very complimentary about the director's work and the production. I'm still waiting for DR Jose's thoughts. I ran into Jonathan Tunick and went waltzing off with him to a taxi so I sorta left our DR Jose in the lurch. I'm sorry. DR Jose!

We had a very musical row of seats in the front rown of the mezzanine: Jose, Matthew, me, Allison, assistant to Brian, and Brian the copyist, and Mark Mitchell, who played all the rehearsals. I met Mark working on the Encores! PAL JOEY production, Or was it CALL ME MADAM?

One of the major creeps from the Men's Chorus who writes for Broadwayworld.com, was there, but  we didn't speak. I think we have a mutual loathing going on which suits me fine. And he's a total ass.

Frankenstein/Bride Of Frankenstein and Targets

I started smiling as soon as the Overture started... And I'm still smiling.

It's a beautiful, old-fashioned show... which happens to be serendipitously timely.

I really could gush and gush, but I think the best thing I could say about the show would be:

If I had enough money to fly every DR to NYC to see this production, I would.

DR Jose, that is a fantastic review! I find the score so sublime that when the show gets to a great song like "Look to the Rainbow" or "Something Sort of Grandish," I get all teary. Even the comedy numbers get my eyes all watery. And when Terri White launches into "Necessity," it's complete nirvana.

Even the comedy numbers get my eyes all watery. And when Terri White launches into "Necessity," it's complete nirvana.

Trust me, DR elmore, I was tearing up almost every time a song started.

I think I would, too, just from the sheer joy of seeing a live performance of the show, and with Elmore's orchestrations to boot!

Do you know if Ernie Harburg is going to attend one of the shows? He's a good guy and the Harburg Foundation has contributed to both THE INTERNATIONALE and SACCO AND VANZETTI.

DR elmore - You didn't leave me in the lurch.  It gave me a chance to catch up with some other people I know in the production.  I did end up taking the A Train back up town with Brian.  -We both agreed that the three of us need to sit down to a nice, long, leisurely-paced dinner sometime.

David Hyde Pierce and his partner were also in attendance tonight.  We had better seats. ;)

Harry Secombe. Ahhhh...I love his voice.
Ahhhh. . .and I do love me some Florence Henderson!  And Frank Poretta, too!

I even like me some Toralv!

Did you know that Frank Poretta's son was the star of TNT's Robin Hood series a few years back? Just as cute as his daddy! In fact, his daddy guest starred on an episode. He has aged well!

And Matthew Poretta was also in the original Broadway cast of Passion as Count Ludovic, as well as Jere Shea's understudy (Jere Shea).  -Consequently, I saw him five times.  -Although, never as Giorgio.

How fun! I guess?

It was. I know Frank Porretta from his opera work and a voice teacher.

I saw Mr Poretta play Candide in 1971 at the Kennedy Center Opera House. I swear I saw him in another show as well.

I cannot wait to hear from Elmore about the Finian's dress rehearsal-  I am really looking forward to seeing the show

and now that I've followed Elmores' link and seen the cast phots I am really hoping that Elmore can arrange a marriage meeting for me with Cheyenne

Good luck, Vixmom!  You're not the only one who would like to marry meet him!

;)

I had sort of forgotten that Cheyenne Jackson was in the show, so when he made his entrance, I was very happily surprised. ::)  -And, yes, he's still gorgeous and sings like a dream.

As for Finian's Rainbow...

All the heirs had huge blocks of seats roped off for family and friends: Lynn Lane (widow of Burton), Anthony Saidy (son of Fred), Ernie Harburg (son of Yip). I hope they were all happy with what they saw.

FINIAN'S RAINBOW must be rocking the house about now.

It was, and it did.

I know Jeff Edgerton. . . .

I know Jeff too. We recorded some demos a few years ago.  Such a nice guy, and every time we run into each, well... I just want to hug him. And hug him. And hug him.  ::)

Brian Sears?

Nope, Brian Allan Hobbs, your music copyist.  We had a nice chat during my trip up to 145th Street.

I suspect of my grandish 100 measures only a few will make the recording:
     1. end of "This Time of the Year"
     2. end of "Look to the Rainbow" Dance
     3. Finale Ultimo
     4. Perhaps the end of the Golden Crock dance if they record it

Everything else is incidental underscoring that I really can't see ending up on a recording, even though I like a lot of it quite a bit.

That's nice. Brian's a good fellow. Is 172nd Street near you?  I just met Brian Sears today. At last Friday's sitzprobe, there was this guy in a bseball cap singing with the ensemble and I asked the stage manager who he was since I'd never seen him at any staging rehearsal: Brian Sears, standby for Woody and Og, and swing. What a horrible number of parts to learn!

What's with the headshots cutting off the tops of their heads? Is that the latest style?

That's just bad cropping of the actors 8x10s for the website.  Looks like most of them would have worked better in "portrait" rather than "landscape".

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Apartment Vibes to DR Jose! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So, I'm puzzled: what's the landlord being difficult about?
It all goes back to the all the craziness and crap that went on back in May and June when the old roommates moved out and the new ones moved in...coupled with my current work and financial situation and/or lack thereof... and the fact that we still have yet to be presented with a copy of the new/current lease.  -Which we've asked for repeatedly!  We were notified of an "outstanding balance", and my roommates and I are not currently in a position to cover it.  -And that's probably all I should be saying about it right now.
I know it will all get worked out. I just feel it. I just need to make it happen now.
Finding it hard to write 1500 words about HELL RIDE.  So far I have:
It's crap.
Only 1498 to go.
Oh, wait.
It's TOTAL crap.
1497.
;)
You could always go the Bart Simpson route:
It was crappity-crap crap, crappity crap, crappity-crappity crap, crap, crap, crappity-crap crap, crappity crap, crappity-crappity crap, crap,crappity-crap crap, crappity crap, crappity-crappity crap, crap,crappity-crap crap, crappity crap, crappity-crappity crap, crap,crappity-crap crap, crappity crap, crappity-crappity crap, crap....
Oh, and I don't think I mentioned - Sunday's open house - I checked about ten times during the day and didn't see one person going in to look.  No cars anywhere to be found.  Finally at about four-thirty there seemed to be about three people going in.  They had one yesterday and I saw no one go in.
bk - Maybe you should go check out the house for yourself?  -And bring some things to leave behind... -Remember that story about the curtain rods? ;)
I'm sure you all found that story completely captivating.
...And that's why I was always glad I never worked in the Choral Department when I worked at the music store.  Too many small publishers to deal with, and none of them had consistent order processing times.  Of course, there were those piano teachers who would place large orders from time to time.  God forbid they ever wanted something from Boosey & Hawkes - that could hold up the completion of an order for months sometimes!
